Known more as a cutting-edge cider maker, Eric Bordelet was a top sommelier at Arpege in Paris, before returning home to Normandy in 1992 to take over the family business. He biodynamically grows more than 20 apple varieties and 15 pear varieties. JASON WILSON, Vinous

Eric Bordelet approaches Cider-making with the same intensity as a passionate oenologist brings to winemaking. Bordelet worked as sommelier in the leading 3 star Parisian restaurant, ‘Arpege’ where he became deeply familiar with the top winemakers and wineries of France. In 1992 he took over the tiny patch of family farmed orchards in Charchigné, in the heart of Normandy’s premium Cider producing area. Since then he has set about rescuing the ancient ‘heirloom’ varieties of pears and apples that produce tiny quantities and amazing flavour.

Produced from pear trees estimated to be about 300 years old. Poiré Granit has 25-80 grams of sugar per liter, yet it doesn't taste particularly sweet.  This is due to the tannin and acidity, which Bordelet says is twice as high as the apple! Stunning as aperitif or with cheese or desserts. With just 4% alc/vol this can be enjoyed any time. Cider simply doesn't get better than this !!

Bouland's 2021 Morgon Bellevue Sable opens in the glass with scents of cherries, plums, peonies and vine smoke. Medium to full-bodied, supple and giving, the sandy soils (and younger vines) from which it derives naturally lend it a more open-knit profile. WILLIAM KELLEY, wineadvocate.com

Really large scaled aromas with a little pyrazine – to start – but then it’s lost in a large melange of dark fruit aromas and faintly flowers too. Wide over the palate – super texture with a fluidity and modest sweetness – but here is longer than the CdBrouilly – what a gorgeously delicious wine!

Pretty and perfumed, the 2019 Chénas Les Carrières wafts from the glass with notes of sweet berry fruit, potpourri, peonies and spices. Medium-bodied, pure and lively, with fine tannins and lively acids, despite the warm conditions, it's surprisingly reminiscent of the Thillardon brothers' 2016 vintage. The "regular" bottling of 2022 Corcelette from Monsieur Bouland is another lovely example of this very strong vintage. It is deep, bright and sappy, offering up a nose of red and black cherries, sweet cranberries, vinesmoke, gamebird, a dollop of fresh thyme and a very pretty base of soil tones. On the palate the wine is vibrant, full-bodied and deep at the core, with a fine foundation of soil, bright acids, moderate tannins and great focus and grip on the long, complex and beautifully balanced finish. Of all of Daniel's outstanding 2022s, this is certainly the first cuvée I would be reaching for to drink now, as it has a sense of wide open generosity that is not evident with most of his other, more structured wines from this vintage. This is not to say that it will not also age long and gracefully, but the regular Corcelette is not going to demand cellaring time before it gives up the goods. 2024-2060. JOHN GILMAN

Hoppenot farms almost three-hectares of this imposing east-facing terroir overlooking the famous windmill of Moulin-a-Vent. Les Moriers shares a border with Poncié, Les Roches and Les Garants and the vines at the top of the vineyard lie a stone’s throw from the winery.

Vine age varies from 35 to 90 years. Rising from 260 metres on the Moulin-a-Vent border to 340 metres at the top of the slope, this steep hillside contains two mineral rich soil types: the vines at the top of the slope are on very poor soils of shallow granitic sand; then it becomes heavier in the Bas de Moriers with increasing clay concentration over the granite bedrock. Grégoire Hoppenot farms in both sectors, reserving the best fruit for this single-terroir bottling.

15 – 30 years on average on granitic soil. 100% Bio-dynamic. Pure red fruits, a refreshing acidity, medium-bodied wine with an earthly complexity. The result of all this is a wine that has a vibrant bouquet with perfumed dark cherries and red currant. The palate is ample possessing beautiful silky tannins.

 

From a site rooted in sand over pink granite, the 2023 Brouilly Reverdon offers vibrant aromas of crushed violet and peony petals, dark cherries and a touch of chocolate spice. Medium to full-bodied, it features a concentration perfectly balanced for the structure of the wine, offering an infusion of fruit, tangy with acidity. Smells darker than the Fleurie cru, more ‘masculine’, dare I say it! With blackberries and black cherries in the mix, and a touch of liquorice. Dark earth, dark chocolate with grainy tannins. The 2023 Côte de Brouilly Les Sept Vignes offers aromas of dark cherry, ginger spice and dried purple petals. A liquer and cassis ripeness with blackberry, black currant and overtly ripe raspberry. The palate has a liqeur richness with extreme structure. Very present tannins. Very long and built for the long haul.

From the steep slopes of the Côte de Brouilly, the 2023 Côte de Brouilly Les Griottes de Brulhié delivers a bold profile of chocolate, blackberry and cherry, complemented by sous-bois, graphite and spice. The palate opens softly, with a plush and rounded entry, transitioning into a mid-palate marked by brisk, chalky tannins. Tangy acidity balances the medium to full-bodied weight, while the graphite lingers long after the fruit fades. Bright and dynamic, this is a wine worth seeking out. KENNA WELLS, Wine Advocate

The 2023 Côte de Brouilly La Chapelle, from the steep slopes (50% grade) at the top of Mont Brouilly, offers a thunderous and wild aromatic profile, with dark berries, plums, chocolate, eucalyptus and cracked pepper dominating the nose. The concentrated, sappy fruit on the palate is matched by a taut structure and salinity, suggesting immense power beneath its poised and fresh exterior. Fine-grained tannins, seamlessly intertwined with graphite and flinty minerality, gracefully sheath the wine, drawing it into a tapering, polished finish. A work of both power and restraint, it reveals just enough of its character to appreciate its inherent sophistication needed to tame the latent energy. this is a wine with immense potential, promising further depth with time. The 2022 Côte de Brouilly Le Clos comes from more clayey soils at the bottom of the titular hillside. Showing fine mineralité and tension on the nose, it offers raspberry and light blackcurrant leaf aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with sapid black fruit, a touch of licorice on the mid-palate with blood orange and spice box on the finish. Jean-Paul Thévenet is certainly a name in everyone's ear ever since Kermit Lynch dubbed him, together with Marcel Lapierre, Guy Breton and Jean Foillard, as Beaujolais' famous "Gang of Four" in the '80s. The essence of their philosophy: take a step back, appreciate and cultivate old vines, apply organic farming practices, avoid the use of sulphur, let natural ferments do their magic and help the terroir express itself through minimal intervention. Following these principals, each of them has proven that Beaujolais is more than just 'Nouveau' and can indeed produce meaningful, complex and wonderful wines.

The 2023 Côte de Brouilly Cuvée Zaccharie Geoffrey offers aromas of cooked cherries, sweet oak spice and a touch of black pepper on the nose, with reserved flavors that suggest potential for further development. Full of concentration on the palate, the wine begins plush and broad but narrows gracefully under taut, cinching tannins, leading to a finish laced with subtle flint and a saline edge. The oak presence is pronounced at this stage but poised to integrate further, though not a perfect match given the poised nature of the wine. KENNA WELLS, Wine Advocate

There are only a select few, perfect locations, to grow great wine on this big blue orb of ours and those are between 30 and 50 degrees north and south latitudes. Those regions need to provide just the right temperature, humidity, heat and climate to grow high quality grapes. We are absolutely spoilt for choice when it comes to the northern reaches with the whole of Europe at our disposal, but travel further south and things are a little different.

While New Zealand and Tasmania provide us with plenty of choices (and we would be remiss not to include them) the southern reaches sitting on and just below the 40 degrees latitude offer a up a wholy unique drinking experience.

While grapes like riesling, cabernet and pinot noir are familiar to us, a number of the wines in this months pack aren't seen so regularly on your local wines list or on the shelves of your corner wine store. From Malbec's in Argentina to the infamous Pinotage and the more classic varietals like Chenin in South Africa this is an exploration of all that is good in these great southern lands of ours.

Where do we start with such an awesome selection of interesting wine? It's hard to decide we might just do a quick run down by country.

South America is relatively new to the wine scene but has come along in leap and bounds. WE start with a couple of classics with the Finca Los Moras Malbec and the Santa Ana Cabernet. These are text book varietal wines with plenty to love in their up-front fruit and modern styling. For something a little different we through in the Bouchon pais. For those who do not know, Pais is an old variety that is Chile's answer to pinot noir. With a little more bite and a wild flourish this a great introduction to this fascinating wine.

Closer to home in New Zealand we have few classic drops with the Palliser Estate Pencarrow pinot. A wine you would be hard pressed to find with the structure, concentration and complexity at the same price. Off to Hawkes Bay for some stonking Chardonnay from Bilancia fame and some of the world most underrated syrah from stars Te Mata. What a treat!

Just in our backyard, Tassie continues to pump out some of the best wine in the country and while we would never miss out on showcasing another great pinot there is some real winners with pinot gris and riesling on the rise. The Moores Hill gris is a freat example of textural and vibrant gris from the Apple Isle with the Riversdale riesling hot on its tale.

And for something a little different we have got the latest release Willie Smiths Cider. This is an absolute belter, and we couldn't help but included it once we were told it had been released. Perfect timing! We will take that one!

Last, and something we don't see much in Aus is a cracking selection of wines from South Africa. Long-term customers may recognise some of these wines and as far as we are concerned, they are some of the best modern day Cape wines to make it over. The Bare Bones cinsault is a zippy red full of energy while the Winery of Good Hope pinotage is a juicy and fun take on this classic red variety,

And what would a selection of wine from South Africa be without a chenin blanc. The Secateurs is clean and crunchy with a plush fruit profile that is cleaned up by chenin's zippy acidity.
All in al a pretty awesome and exciting collection of stellar wines from the great south!
