Walsh & Sons Felix Shiraz 2021

Grown in the sandy, clay soils of our Osmington family vineyard. Planted in 1995 with rows running north to south on a slight northeast facing slope. The vineyard is certified biodynamic. We treat it like a veg patch, heavy compost in autumn and sheep snapping the odd wire as they browse in winter.

20% handpicked early April before machine harvesting 2-days later. The whole bunches added to vat, the machine component going on top, no crushing or destemming. Wild fermented on skins, until dry. Pressed to a mix of new & old French barrels. A single racking after the Spring equinox otherwise it sits on full lees until January, topping every two weeks. Spontaneous malolactic fermentation from Autumn to Spring giving a natural CO2 cover during maturation. The wine remains undisturbed with minimal sulphur added prior to bottling in February. High-quality, smaller corks provide a more drinkable style through bottle aging. The wine is unfined & unfiltered so may present some harmless deposits in the bottle.

The Story Wines Super G Red Blend 2022
It's not heavy but it's so wild with spice and so generally captivating that it's hard to put it down. This is a cracker of a wine. Red and blue berried fruit flavours, black pepper notes, a mezcal aspect and flings of roasted nuts. It's ripe and robust, in a mid-weight way, but the real key here is that it's aflame with roasted spice/pepper notes. CAMPBELL MATTINSON, winecompanion.com

  13. Monte Ronca Valpolicella Superiore 2022
    Monte Ronca Valpolicella Superiore 2022
The Monte Ronca Valpolicella is a blend of mostly the Corvina grape with a touch of Corvinone, Rondinella and an even smaller portion of Teroldego. The vineyards are predominantly limestone and clay, with altitudes of up to 450 metres at their Col de la Bastia vineyard. The grapes are hand-picked, crushed and fermented in mostly stainless-steel tanks, and are kept in bottle for 12 months before release. This wine is light, fresh and fruity, almost Beaujolais-like in style, with sour cherry, dried herbs and a soft and silky tannin profile.

Little Frances Warner Vineyard Shiraz 2022

Great delight here. Medium weight but with darker fruit spectrum scents and flavours, plum, choc-liquorice, cassis and lavender with faint mintiness and dill/fennel notes in the mix. The palate is supple, smooth, rolls beautifully and long. There's a sense of concentration but refinement, lots of graphite minerally notes and light, wet pebble notes. It's a delight to drink. MIKE BENNIE

A plump, glossy and nicely reductive, mid-weighted expression of shiraz that is crafted to be drunk with imminence and joy. Violet, purple pastille, iodine and a hint of stemmy bitterness. Yet this does not dissuade from the drinking pleasure but rather, imparts a lick of savoriness and snap to the exuberant finish. NED GOODWIN

    Spinifex Bete Noir 2021
It’s flush with fruit but there’s a meatiness to this and its churned with tannin too, grainy tannin. Charred meats, blackberries and blueberries, a floral element and fist loads of roasted spice. It’s bold but neat, tannic but not at the expense of the overall flow. Excellent gear, this. (94) CAMPBELL MATTINSON, The Wine Front

Deep, bold purple-red colour; aromas of sweet ripe black fruits, blackberry and mulberry, vanilla/chocolate too, the palate full bodied and fruit-sweet at the core, then some astringency comes in thanks to acidity and tannin—but it's all in balance. Plenty happening here. A promising shiraz that will reward patient cellaring. (95) HUON HOOKE, The Real Review

Pete Schell's Bête Noir is a shiraz blended across a selection of Barossan grounds including a portion from the cooler Eden Valley. Typically sporting a super-saturated, magenta-splashed hue with aromas of bright plum, black cherry and blueberry fruits cut with hints of violets, brown spice, ironstone, dark chocolate, smoked meats, cherry confit and earth. Glossy and impressively pure, there's ferrous edge to the tight tannins and an acid line that propels the pure fruit briskly across the palate, finishing elegant yet opulent. A true cool climate shiraz. Herbaceous aromas with a scent of blackberry and blue fruits, a light spray of black pepper and woody spices. The palate has a core of ripe blackberry fruit and concentrated redder berry fruit flavours. The blend of various barrels makes for a complex fruit palate with the pepper noted on the nose adding an attractive feature on the palate with the addition of woody spice and warm oak. The tannins finish with a detailed acid play that is flavourful and interesting to drink.

  30. Hobo Wine Camp Folk Machine Parts and Labour Red 2022
Hobo Wine Camp Folk Machine Parts and Labour Red 2022
This is the second vintage that Grenache has dominated the P&L blend. The 2022 is a blend of Grenache from Mangels Ranch in Suisun Valley, Cedar Lane in Arroyo Seco, and Waddington Ranch in Mendocino, Carignane from Lolonis, Maria Martinson, and Castañon all in Mendocino, and Syrah from Vecino in Potter Valley. There is a good amount of whole cluster and carbonic maceration through the lots keeping everything fresh and fun. As always, the blend was made immediately after harvest and the wine was aged in a combination of French oak foudres and stainless steel tanks.

Oh yum! This is such a joy to drink. A cracking drop here from the legend that is Kenny likitprakong of Hobo. He was telling us that this was his house wine. The one that he has cases of to rip the corks off when mates come round, the BBQ fires up and a long warm weekend is about a kick off and we can see why. This is hard to put down once it's in your glass.

It's all about the red fruits here with fresh picked red cherry and raspberry all vying for position at the front of the pack. Some pretty violet notes swirl around and as this opens up some savoury whole black peppercorn and foresty bits make themselves heard. Its lithe and fresh bursting onto the palate with that core of red berry fruit. Clean and pure just sizzling with energy. A joy to drink and would happily take a brief chill if you were so inclined.

  31. Cosse Maisonneuve Cahors Solis 2019
    Cosse Maisonneuve Cahors Solis 2019

Matthieu Cosse and Catherine Maisonneuve created Domaine Cosse Maisonneuve in 1999 after taking over the  5-hectare estate in the small region of Prayssac, near Cahors in the south west of France. The property was planted with 40-year-old Malbec (locally known as 'Cot') and they have now moved towards Certified organic and work with some biodynamic principles. Everything is by hand here and the wines are uncommonly elegant and round compared to the more rustic versions we are used to seeing.

No oak in this cuvee and it is so much better for it. That typical mulberry and boysenberry fruit leap out of the glass with a touch of licorice interspersed between wild bracken aroma. Approachable and fruity, with a soft, supple texture and dressed with a fine layer of smooth rich tannin. Vibrant and full of energy but still solidly built without feeling cumbersome or heavy. They really pull this off beautifully.

  33. Frankland Estate Isolation Ridge Mourvedre 2023
Frankland Estate Isolation Ridge Mourvedre 2023

Vines planted in 2004, which makes them the oldest in Frankland River. 110 dozen produced.

This is a very fine rendition of Mourvèdre. It’s medium-bodied, dusty and spicy, with fragrant dried herbs, red and blue fruit, liquorice root and dried flower perfume. It feels quite stony and ‘minerally’, some bloody ferrous things, acidity is all just so, and in some ways, it puts me in mind of top shelf German Pinot Noir, which is strange to say, and maybe esoteric, though that’s the kind of feel it has. There’s a little grilled meat, toasted hazelnut, and orange peel, with a bright finish of excellent length. Oh, and the quality of the tannin, I forgot to mention, is so lovely, a sort of fine brick dust texture to it. It’s under-stated, and quite wonderful. (95) GARY WALSH, The Wine Front

Mourvedre is one of the most improved varieties emerging from WA's vineyards. As the first to plant this variety in the region, Frankland Estate led the way. This represents a modern style - a middleweight that packs a punch. Flavours are a complex melange of blueberry essence, dark chocolate, petrichor and a dash of umami broth. It's the grape skin tannins that make this style so unique and wonderfully moreish. They bring dryness and lightness at first, then gently creep across the palate giving the wine energy and substance as you enjoy the changing flavours. You can be sure this is a wine that will grow in stature, over time, as it's discovered and appreciated. (95) PAUL EDWARDS, The West Australian

  34. Frankland Estate Isolation Ridge Syrah 2023
Frankland Estate Isolation Ridge Syrah 2023

There’s a lot of detail and delight with this savoury syrah, a 1.5% splash of viognier and 3.5% glug of mourvèdre also in the mix, with 5% whole bunches, then aged 14 months in French oak foudres plus puncheons. The tannins are key – they are shapely, plush, almost velvety, and augmented by aromas/flavours of dark fruit, warm spice, ferrous notes and gun smoke. Fuller bodied without feeling weighty, and the finish is long. (96) STUART PIGOTT, JamesSuckling.com

Between the 15% whole bunch and the garnish of 2% Viognier, the aromatics are stoooooon’n! This wine is confident in her own skin and commands respect wherever she goes. Plum juice, red liquorice and vanilla. I want to protect this wine. Nurture it. Love it. The intense sweetness of fruit, is complimented by small framed, Velcro-like-tannins and encouraged by the 13 months spent in 3500-litre French oak foudre. Medium bodied. Doesn’t need food. Drinking beautifully in its current window of youth. The finish is clean, fresh and sharp—yet the fruit carries effortlessly through the length, with blood orange, Canadian mountains and rose petals. Chic and stylish—this wine drives a 1959 Cadillac. (95) CYNDAL PETTY, Winepilot.com

  48. Luke Lambert Syrah 2023
    Luke Lambert Syrah 2023

80% whole bunch, and in 2023, picked a month later than the 2022.

Dark cherry and blue fruits, plenty of spice, black olive and grilled meat. It’s medium-bodied, spicy and perfumed, meaty too, with a surprisingly intense burst of ‘minerally’ acidity through its core. Tannin is all crushed rock and sooty goodness, and the finish is long and savoury and stalky. Very good. (95) GARY WALSH, The Wine Front

Beautifully poised, cool expression of shiraz with concentrated but elegant dark cherry fruit and a subtle overlay of spice. A very good follow-up to the excellent 2022, which is drinking beautifully now. MAX ALLEN, The Financial Review

This year, 80% whole bunches were included. In the crucial early days of vinification, Rosalind foot stomps the ferments three times a day to ensure each berry is quickly but gently popped, maximising the juice’s exposure to skins and stalks. Ferments are fast, and the wine is promptly pressed, settled and racked to 5000-litre foudre for maturation. This is such a composed, vivid young Syrah. Expect bright perfume, spice and dark berries woven through delicious earthy, stony elements. It’s slick, expressive and super long; world-class Syrah at an attainable price!
