We were first introduced to the distillery by Melbourne (and San Sebastian) bar owner, Gerald Diffey. He was fairly passionate about this range of gins he'd seen on a trip back to the UK and urged us to import some. We knew Gerald knew his stuff so we were interested but wary given the number of Gins in the market, but once we delved deeper into the operation and then tasted the range we were sold.

The distillery is a relatively new operation headed by Bob Russell and sons, Matthew and Stephen. It is unique in several senses but first off it is housed in a Victorian-era pumphouse in the now derelict Chatham Dockyard south of London. The dockyard was at one time of huge importance to the Empire building ships for the Royal Navy from Napoleonic times through to the Falklands. The pumphouse # 5 was used to pump out water for the dry docks. Russell saw an opportunity to revitalise a magnificent piece of English architecture, give some locals a job and indulge his passion for making bespoke spirits. Lots of funky reductive stink. Savoury, light cheesiness, aromatic herbs, lemon and lime. Light bodied, intense and slatey with a driving line of acidity and a finish that rushes you, and leaves the gate open. Wonderful. Drink 2027+ GARY WALSH

Crunchy, chalky, minerally riesling with a burst of lime juice flavour ripping through its core. Low-ish alcohol, piercing style. Impressive from all angles. (95) CAMPBELL MATTINSON

The 2013 Poison Hill Riesling has an expressive nose of honeyed white peach, lime cordial and pink grapefruit dotted with touches of fennel seed and jasmine. This dry, light-bodied wine is exploding with citrus and stone-fruit freshness and is already very approachable. It finishes satisfyingly long. Drink it now to 2023+. WINE ADVOCATE


White clay soils make for generous flavour concentration, framed in refreshingly low alcohol, layered with kaffir lime, nashi pear and a hint of guava. This is a delightfully textured, finely structured riesling of pronounced, mouth-filling chalk mineral texture, lingering with great persistence and finely integrated acidity. Very youthful and backward a year after vintage, this is one of the greatest, most textural and most elegant releases for Poison Hill yet. TYSON STELZER March 2014

Distilled using locally grown barley and Kentish water, this is as fresh and bright as a sunny spring day in the countryside. Elegant and refined gin, with a lovely, half floral, half herbal lift. I tasted it before learning what botanicals had been used in its production, and suspect its fragrant quality comes from the local elderflowers. MAX ALLEN

Aged in small apple brandy casks for over 12 months, this rich and generous liqueur is a result of blending pressed French and British heirloom apple varieties with our apple spirit.

Complex and well-structured with baked apple and spice, balanced with firm tannins and cask influence.

Sourced from two terraces and predominantly rooting in a rocky subsoil of paragneiss, Hiedler's 2021 Ried Gaisberg 1ÖTW Riesling is dense and spicy on the nose, showing ripe and concentrated bright fruit with subtle earthy notes. Round and elegant on the palate, with juicy richness, well-integrated mineral acidity and persistent ripe fruit flavors on the salty, grippy finish, this is still a young Gaisberg but with promising potential. 13% stated alcohol. Anyone who thinks that dry riesling is always lean and austere should dive into this deep pool of ripe peach and apricot to discover the grape's sensual side. Generous and creamy, but without any sense of weight, this combines ripeness with zesty freshness at the bright finish. Drink or hold. STUART PIGOTT

Gaisberg is often spectral, as if its flavors were placed in your hands by a ghost dressed as a bride. Part of that is present here, but there's also a quantum concentration of mineral, catapulted upward by a slingshot of acidity. The wine is so amazing it borders on the implausible.

The grip and the mere impact on the physical palate are impossible to resist. Yet there a higher octave of flavor that wisps up into the air like the vapors from frozen nitrogen. It's a concatenation of lemons and freesia; it alludes to basmati; it alludes, hauntingly, to white peaches and to blueberries, part of an incipience of sweetness that turns it from prose into music.

It's introverted but passionate, classical but not stodgy, and it is in every way wonderful. It almost isn't "Riesling" any more. It's just Gaisberg; I know it from Gobelsburg and Hirsch, and this site is quite particular, spectral and subtle; it whispers its strange tongue and you feel an opiate tingle - What is this wine doing to me? It smells a little like Champagne, this cool high chiming, this cryptic bliss. It is a very rare wine, that delivers as many poignant questions as this one does. TERRY THEISE

The 2021 Riesling Ried Gaisberg is on gneiss, schist and amphibolite.
Crushed ivy and citrus leaf overlay an almost savory, salty notion of wet earth. The palate is rounded and juicy-almost bouncy with lively energy. Bright, lemon-fringed stone fruit notes skip away in such a joyful fashion that the underlying stony seriousness is almost skipped over. In coming years, the stoniness will gain the upper hand, but, for now, the playfulness of these aromas-leafy top notes and citric charm-quite rightly enjoy the limelight. Delightfully blatantly aromatic - I mean three-feet-from-the-glass aromatic. Did I mention it also smells marvelous?…This wine, while snappy and bracing in the '21 "type," is a rare success in the everyday echelon… The wine leads with verbena, lemon balm and hyssop; it's more herbal than precisely mineral… It shows a sort of macro-terroir of Kamptal - of Austria overall, really - and while the weight and outlines are sleek and cool, the flavors are purely Austrian… It's another wine that held steady over the days…It's also the kind of wine I call "coniferous," (or fir when I'm being literal and Christmas Tree when I'm being colorful…) TERRY THEISE

The Riesling terraces are among the oldest vineyards cultivated by Schloss Gobelsburg. Complex aromas of ripe stone fruit and toast. The 2023 Riesling Brauneberger Juffer Auslese, made with possibly just 5% botrytis, has a subtle scent of gentle lemon. The palate combines exquisite creaminess with candied lemon, smooth and serene, rich yet absolutely chiseled and streamlined, pushing forward with freshness and drive. The Juffer 2023 Riesling Auslese, as it is referred to on the consumer label, displays a quite aromatic and attractive nose of honeyed yellow peach, almond, rose, candied grapefruit, anise, smoke, William pear, a whiff of candy floss, and acacia. The wine combines intensity and a certain lightness and freshness on the palate, as both ripe, yellow fruits (canned yellow peach, quince, and pear) interplay with fresher elements including mint and anise. The finish is pure and aromatic (tangerine, mango), and proves nicely focused, despite the richness at play. This is a superb, playful riper Auslese. (94) mosel fine wines

We wanted to taste the Juniper. We wanted it to taste different to our Melbourne Dry Gin. We wanted it to taste amazing.

The Single Shot is a gin made in a single distillation, unlike the MGC’s original Melbourne Dry Gin, in which botanicals are individually distilled then blended together. The result is a full flavoured gin, so much so it may louche (form a fine glazy mist) in a G&T or Martini, which MGC celebrates as a mark of distinction.

Even before its release, Melbourne Gin Company has received major international accolades for Single Shot becoming the most awarded gin that no one has yet tasted.

Since 2013 when MGC launched their first pioneering product, Melbourne Dry Gin, their fascination with the alchemy of gin has kept them busy conducting trials, perfecting their techniques and playing with different botanicals to create Single Shot.

Described as a "cask-finished English grain spirit" because it hasn't spent enough time in barrel to be designated as whisky (there is a whisky in the works, due for release this year), this has just the faintest hint of pale golden colour and is bursting with ethereal aromas of sweet, freshly milled malted barley, a touch of honey, some lightly toasted linseed and sesame. Distilled in Battersea, south London, this is named after Ralph Dodd, an early nineteenth-century entrepreneur whose many schemes included the creation of the London Distillery Company. The venture failed - indeed Dodd was taken to court for his innovative notion to issue transferable shares - but his sprit lingered on. So when the brand new London Distillery Company started producing gin in 2013, it was called Dodd's. The bulk of the botanicals, including the honey, are distilled in a copper pot still, while the more delicate ones are cold distilled in a vacuum still. The two streams are then blended and married before bottling.

The nose is creamy, then a leafy shiso-like aroma emerges with fat fruits behind. In time there is subtle juniper, a menthol hit, some celery, and sweetness. The mouth feel is very silky, which distracts you initially from the high, fresh and brightly warm perfume. You're inside the pine forest eating ras el hanout baklava. DAVID BROOM, Gin: The Manual

The botanicals are steeped for 24 to 48 hours then additional Juniper and Liquorice Root are vapour infused in the neck of the copper pot still to give a traditional Juniper flavour at the front of the palate through to a sweet liquorice finish. This gin is triple distilled giving the spirit an ultra-smooth flavour despite the higher than normal ABV. It contains 11 Botanicals including 3 local botanicals - Native Bush Pepper, Lemon Myrtle, Tasmanian Wattleseed. SPRING BAY DISTILLING

For me this is an altogether gentle and delicate gin not that it doesn't have presence or flavour. More that it relies on its quality through craftmanship and quality ingredients. Juniper driven but highlighted with native bush botanicals that give a unique flavour and aromatic profile. I often find (Australia) native botanicals in gins overpower everything else but these are judiciously used and create a wonderful tasting gin. There is sweet oiliness on the finish that carries everything to gentle, clean and clear finish. A really well made and poised Aussie gin. MYLES,PWS

If you haven’t noticed the explosion in the craft gin scene in Australia then you must be living under a rock. As a Gin fanatic that has been pretty exciting for me in the last few years watching this category re-energised. Matt and Dave from Patient wolf are one of the newest kids on the block and they have done a fantastic job with their super locally crafted Patient Wolf gin. Yes -  I know its not wine!

With the help of their 230L Muller copper still, custom built in Germany they have made what is one of my favorite Aussie Gins to date - and there are a lot of them! Grapefruity-Citrus opens on the nose that breaks and revels a lovely savoury, earthy bent to this gin that I absolutely love. Orris root and peppry corriander compliment the underlying juniper drive. There is an almost forest floor like edge to the pithy citrus flecked core that just works brilliantly and sets it apart from so many Gins that are making their way on to the scene.

Perfect Gin and tonic gin with a slice of ruby grapefruit or try it as a Gin buck with lime, mint and dry ginger. Yum!
