    Mount Pleasant Rosehill Shiraz 2022
Dried roses, boysenberry and classic Rosehill Shiraz character, but with a deeper more rugged, peppery and earthy cast. Medium-bodied, tannin slightly tough, red and blue fruit, pepper and spice, baked raspberry, and a slightly raw finish, but length is solid. It's a bit closed in as a young wine, but should turn out pretty well. It's a nice wine all up, from a more difficult vintage. GARY WALSH, The Wine Front

Frankland Estate Isolation Ridge Mourvedre 2021
Since being planted in 2005, Mourvèdre has evolved with maturing vines to the point it is now ready to go under the Isolation Ridge label in its own right. It’s a variety that I really do like, especially from Frankland River where some very smart examples are starting to emerge. This is certainly one of those. Captures the savoury and slightly dried herb characters of this variety with a regional ironstone ferrous influence. It’s medium boded and beautifully weighted with fine sinewy tannins and well managed oak harmonising perfectly. Beautiful.(96) RAY JORDAN, Wine Pilot

  5. Trinity Hill The Gimblett Bordeaux Blend 2019
Trinity Hill The Gimblett Bordeaux Blend 2019
Aromas of dark berries and hay, tobacco and gravelly soils, there’s a core of concentration and power with new oak and violets, red berries and energy. Complex, youthful and engaging. On the palate - though very primary still there’s a silky textured core of fruit contrasted by polished tannins and salivating acidity. The sweetness of new barrel adds depth and complexity. As the wine relaxes in glass the flavours and textures become more intense and focused coating the palate with flavour and concentration. A lengthy finish, lovely mouthfeel and length. Excellent drinking from late 2023/2024 through 2035. (96) CAM DOUGLAS MW

Trinity Hill's 2018 The Gimblett is a 50-50 blend of Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, aged in 100% new French oak for 21 months. The floral overtones of the Franc really show up on the nose, while the palate is more about cassis and a streamlined, concentrated, linear presentation. Medium to full-bodied, it adds softly dusty tannins on the finish, along with hints of mocha and vanilla. Approachable now, it should still be going strong in a decade's time. 7. Jean Louis Chave Selection Cotes du Rhone Mon Coeur 2022
Jean Louis Chave Selection Cotes du Rhone Mon Coeur 2022
.. the bouquet engages immediately, with an open, busy offer of cooked blackberry, a note of sweetness in it, like a coulis, and a touch of licorice from the Syrah. The palate glides along from the off, is a gourmand affair, with its sweet flow central to its appeal. It offers a Villages level Côtes du Rhône with ample content and good, dark berry fruit throughout, the tannins polished and in the wheel, just a note of grain from them on the close. There are threads of freshness that are vital for its movement. It's a free and full runner now, with the ability to loosen up a little over the next couple of years. JOHN LIVINGSTONE LEARMONTH

Its charismatic, black-hearted core wrestles your palate, offering a kaleidoscopic burst of blue, black and dark red berries. Ripe licorice flavours mix with earthy inky tones and then a suave tail of tannins guides you to the finish line. This is a Cote du Rhone with attitude and gravitas - buyer beware, you're in for a wild ride with this. GABRIELLE POY

Place of Changing Winds Heathcote Syrah 2021

The reason the POCW folks went to this vineyard was for the syrah, this being the first of the releases solely from this site, from a singular year.

Very floral in the perfume, violets and lavender, whiffs of eucalyptus and loads of raspberry, cherry and strawberry, in a fog of scent too. Lots of concentration to taste but with a glossy wash of acidity under the tart red cherry, game meat, dried herbs and white pepper characters. Beautiful flavours, fine, satiny tannins, great extension of flavour, a cool, minty finish. Spot on medium weight fragrant and spicy style. MIKE BENNIE, The Wine Front

Shiraz sourced from the 450m elevation, 1982-planted Hampton vineyard on Menglers Hill; destemmed, 10 days on skins and 18 months in older, seasoned French oak. Satsuma plum, blueberry and boysenberry fruit tones are joined by hints of fine spice, sage, violets, softly spoken vanillin oak and earth. The fruit darkens on the palate, tensing before fanning out on the finish with a cascade of dusty, granitic tannin and plenty of Eden Valley drive. Lovely. (95) DAVE BROOKES, James Halliday

  16. Mount Horrocks Cabernet Sauvignon 2022
    Mount Horrocks Cabernet Sauvignon 2022
From biodynamically (certified) grown vines. This switches things up for the general character of Clare Valley cabernet wines, lighter, brighter, frisky almost, lots of greenery and peppery spice, almost minty elements in dark chocolate, cassis, boysenberry characters to taste. There's a crispness to the wine, bright and lively, the herbaceous notes leading the way but not totally defining the wine. Fine, light tannins hold court. The perfume matches the flavours, a big fog of freshness, herbal detail and almost a sense of 'purple' if synesthesia is your thing. All up, a wine of vigour and good energy, though you'll be wanting cabernet on the more vibrant side overall. MIKE BENNIE, Halliday Wine Companion

Winemaker Michael Hall turns his attention to the Eden Valley, specifically the Naimanya vineyard in the High Eden on the fringe of Flaxman Valley; 30% whole bunches, matured in French oak (10% new) for 20 months. There's a cooler aromatic edge here, blackberry and black cherry pastille vibes with hints of sage, kirsch, brandied fruits, clove-studded glazed ham, liqueur choccies, light tobacco and earth. Solid and broody with some Eden Valley mineral light shining in. DAVE BROOKES, Halliday Wine Companion

  19. Avani Issan Vineyard Pinot Noir 2021
Avani Issan Vineyard Pinot Noir 2021

From Gippsland and, by the label, Issan Vineyard, a site winemaker Shashi Singh is into for its high density planting and organic farming. Avani is one of those very important Victorian wineries, from where I sit, making beautiful wines (by beautiful people). Always a treat to revisit. Avani is based in Mornington Peninsula, of course.

This is a cool and restrained pinot noir, lithe and shapely, fine boned, a web of lacy, silty tannin lends structure and the wine sits comfortable in its dark cherry, black olive, faintly game meat-meets-rosemary savouriness with a little sweet. smoky earth character in the mix for good measure. Understated and elegant but with plenty going on. A little spread in texture gives the wine a moreish feel. It feels fancy too, in that distinct way that great wines of the world hold themselves. Very beautiful, is the message. (96) MIKE BENNIE, The Wine Front

Avani Wines is a small, highly respected producer based in the Mornington Peninsula of Victoria, Australia. Founded by Shashi and Devendra Singh, Avani (meaning Earth in Sanskrit) is dedicated to crafting natural, site-driven wines that reflect their deep respect for the land and the traditions of minimal-intervention winemaking.

At the heart of Avani’s philosophy is a commitment to organic farming (certified) and natural winemaking. The estate vineyard is meticulously tended without synthetic chemicals, and the wines are made using wild yeasts, with no additions apart from a touch of sulphur at bottling — and even that is minimal or sometimes absent.

Forest Hill Block 9 Shiraz 2022
BEST VALUE - HALLIDAY WINE COMPANION

A wine that never disappoints. Based on old, dry-grown vines that are able to rise above any threats in the growing season. The complexity of the wine runs through the bouquet and palate from start to finish. The bouquet has spice and black licorice at its heart, wrapped in blackberry and plum fruit. It will outlive those who cellar it for decades. (96) JAMES HALLIDAY

Deep ruby with a bright purple rim. Fragrant mulberry and raspberry fruit, white pepper and musk spice leap from the glass. Medium weighted palate, silky blue fruits fill the line with intensity and are well balanced by white pepper and violet notes that intrigue the senses. Tannins build as the wine flows along, creating pressure and tension that drives it incredibly long and ensures you make a return visit. A stunning cool-climate style. Prieure Lichine 2018 375ml

The 2018 Prieuré-Lichine is gorgeous. Bright and racy in the glass, the 2018 impresses with its magnificent purity of fruit. In 2018, Prieuré-Lichine has terrific energy and cut. It is perhaps a bit less creamy than the 2016, but also impeccable in its balance. Part of that is driven by the higher percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend in 2018. Rose petal, lavender, mint and spice add nuance to a core of red/purplish fruit. Tasted two times. (95) ANTONIO GALLONI

The 2018 Château Prieuré-Lichine is an attractive, elegant Margaux offering classic, pretty red and black fruits, cedary spice, and dried flowers aromas and flavors. Medium to full-bodied, elegant, and again, with an incredible floral character, it has a supple, rounded texture that's going to allow it to drink nicely in its youth, yet it should also evolve for 15+ years or more. 30. Shaw & Smith Shiraz 2021
    Shaw & Smith Shiraz 2021
This is a beautiful release of Shaw + Smith Shiraz. It’s even-handed and well tempered but then it’s all joy from there. A forest of berries, a walk through flowers, peppers flung through and rubs of woodsy spice; the combination of fruitiness, savouriness, seriousness and fun is a highway to pleasure, built on wine. For all that the tannin is another dimension in itself; fine, lacy, assertive and savoury at once, complete with its own twiggy spice notes. It’s drinking beautifully and it will continue to do so. (96) CAMBELL MATTINSON, The Wine Front

Leaner, lighter and fresher than what I recall, although picked later than usual. A cool and attenuated year, more Euro of styling, the platform. Real vibrato! Satsuma plum, lilac, Bing cherry, star anise and clove meld with white pepper, cedar and vanillin-framed tannins that drive proceedings long. Savvy bunch and oak assemblage confer poise and authority. Classy, while needing time to shed the oak cladding. NED GOODWIN MW, Halliday Wine Companion

    Teusner Big Jim Shiraz 2021

Shiraz sourced from the Wark Family vineyard, aged in 50/50% seasoned and new French oak and featuring a lovely label featuring 'Big Jim' by local Barossa artist Marnie Wark. Deep crimson and packed with plump, ripe satsuma plum and macerated summer berry fruits. Hints of baking spices, dark chocolate, earth, chocolate bullets, violets, olive tapenade, softly spoken cedar tones and vanilla. Plush and pure with bright acid drive and a fan of spicy dark and black berry fruits on the exit. (95) DAVE BROOKES, Halliday Wine Companion

It’s now packaged in a Burgundy bottle and while the front label is more or less the same, it’s been tweaked. Anyway, you get the gist.

Wow this is impressive. Pure, rich and commanding. Blackberry and sweet plum flavours cruise into malt, cedar, earth and orange rind. Tannin comes in long chains, both majestic and seamlessly well integrated. There’s a deal of oak here but the fruit is mighty and in any case, it’s hand-in-glove. It’s absolutely in the fuller, richer, sweeter style, but it’s also an absolute beauty. (95) CAMPBELL MATTINSON, The Wine Front

Incredibly dark and inky in the glass, almost black. Opulent aromas of liqueur chocolate, mulberry, stewed plums, mocha and sweet spice. So much going on here. The palate takes no prisoners, it's decadently rich and mouth-filling with lashings of dark fruit flavours, sweet oak, anise, graphite and pudding spice. There is a decent lick of tannin and acid doing its best to control the slurpy and viscous fruit, and it does a pretty smart job. Power, poise and plushness  (95) AARON BRASHER, The Real Review

It feels like this pocket of Mount Barker does well with this variety. Very well. Bold scents of cassis, lavender, bay leaf and sea spray with well-judged clove and cinnamon spice. Refreshing and succulent to taste, spot-on medium weight, though the levity and vitality make it feel prettier than that. Dark fruit flavours but lots of herb and spice too, tannins in tow are ultrafine and, again, mineral-charged, all pulverised stone and talc. There are also dark plums, currants with herbs and spices in the Middle Eastern vein. It’s full-bodied, plush with ripe yet firm tannins and it lingers long. (95) GOLD JANE FAULKNER, www.winecompanion.com

A very refined and reductive nose with aromas of dark cherries, licorice, dried herbs and lead pencil. 42. Chateau Lilian Ladouys 2018
    Chateau Lilian Ladouys 2018

The 2018 Lilian Ladouys is such a gorgeous wine. Black cherry, gravel, scorched earth, leather and dark spice give the 2018 a brooding aromatic profile that suggests a potent wine. On the palate, though, the Lilian Ladouys is quite a bit more restrained than the bouquet indicates, in a good way. The 2018 is wonderfully deep and fleshy, but not at all heavy, with a natural sense of radiance that complements the more rustic leanings of Saint-Estèphe. There is plenty of pleasure to be found here. In a word: terrific. ANTONIO GALLONI, vinous.com

…From the lieu-dit Blanquet and with a deep purple-black color, the 2018 Lilian Ladouys gives up wonderfully spicy black fruit preserves notions: plum preserves, crème de cassis and blueberry with hints of exotic spices, menthol and violets. Medium to full-bodied, firm and fine-grained in the mouth, it has layer upon layer of rich, spicy black fruits with a lift to the finish. LISA PEROTTI BROWN, wineadvocate.com

Definitely the best vintage of Lilian Ladouys to date. The wine is loaded with licorice, black fruits, smoke and wet earth. Medium/full-bodied with a round, juicy, lush-mouth feel, there is a nice spicy character in the finish due to the increase of Cabernet Sauvignon in the vineyard and the blend…JEFF LEVE, winecellarinsider

A year-in, year-out value, the 2018 Château Lilian Ladouys checks in as 59% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Merlot, and the rest Petit Verdot that was brought up in 35% new oak. Jammy blueberries, ripe cherries, damp earth, tobacco, and spicy wood notes define the bouquet, and it's medium to full-bodied, with a plump, rounded texture, opulent aromas and flavors, and a great finish. Prieure Lichine 2019 375ml

The 2019 Prieuré-Lichine is impeccable. Creamy, layered and resonant in the glass, the 2019 hits all the right notes. Sweet red cherry/plum, lavender, rose petal, spice, mint and blood orange all build effortlessly. Over the last handful of years Prieuré-Lichine has been the single most under the radar wine in Margaux. The 2019 is another fine edition. Class, polish and sensuality make Prieuré-Lichine absolutely irresistible. (95) ANTONIO GALLONI

Wonderful aromas of dried orange, blackcurrant and crushed stone follow through to a full body with beautifully polished tannins that are composed and fine. Lots of subtle and complex character on the finish. Extremely well done here. (95) JAMES SUCKLING

This Margaux estate fashions a classic, dependable red, and I think the 2018 and 2019 are the finest vintages I've tasted from this address. The 2019 Château Prieure-Lichine is impressive, showing lots of spiced red and black fruits, sandalwood, and dried flower notes as well as medium to full-bodied richness on the palate. As with the 2018, it has a terrific floral and spicy character, ripe tannins, and beautiful balance. JEB DUNNUCK

  45. Vanguardist 'V' Syrah 2023
    Vanguardist 'V' Syrah 2023
Vanguardist-farmed Rende vineyard bush vines, around 55 years old; 60% whole bunch, with about seven weeks on skins; matured in 2200L Slavonian oak. The cool vintage has its say. Refined, fragrant and elegant, but savoury and spicy, too. Distinct nebbiolo/nerello mascalese riffs, more the latter – an increasing theme at this address. Dried cranberry and cherry, freeze-dried raspberry and orange, from dehydrated peel to the bitter orange note in amaro, chinotto, Campari … five spice, clove, green cardamom, white pepper, alpine herbs, sour plum, dried mint, pressed flowers, warm terracotta. It’s finer of feel. Is it lesser for it? Nope. It’s laden with so much flavour and etched with ultra-fine but authoritative tannins and refreshing acidity. This also opens up and holds for days, suggesting a very bright future. So individual; so stunning. (97) MARCUS ELLIS, wine companion

A vibrant nose of fresh cranberry, dark cherry and crushed herbs with a hint of coriander seed and baking spice. Palate is long and luscious with silky elegant tannins, pure red fruits and a sinewy freshness that draws the wine all the way back. All varieties working in perfect harmony. Delicious now, but will reward careful cellaring. MAC FORBES
