Mount Horrocks Cordon Cut 2024 375mllA highly risky and complex process, the making of this wine is very much about seat-of-pants decision making and this is where the experience of 30 vintages certainly helps!” says Stephanie.
The high-risk part comes after the canes that feed the fruit are cut – causing that fruit to concentrate – effectively using the vine as a drying rack for the fruit. Much depends on the weather conditions that follow – sunny and dry conditions work wonders; wet, cold or windy conditions all bring challenges. Stephanie uses intuition to decide the day to harvest.

Bubb and Pooley Riesling 2024100 % Coal River Riesling coming from the Winen Vineyard on White Kangaroo Rd (near the home vineyard for B+P) and from the limestone-based Pressing Matters Vineyard in Richmond, Coal River Valley. Nice perfumed aromatics with soft violet, ripe dark cherries, anise and dark plum all interspersed with spicy cedar and delicate woodlands notes. That Otago rich dark cherry is on show but this doesn't feel too big or bulky like some others can. A touch of anise, that same dark plum all pile in there giving this plenty of push and depth. Its supple and soft with a lovely flow that carries the palate to a long finish that seems to unfold dark fruits, savoury spice, cedar and foresty notes layer by layer.

Richter Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Kabinett 2021The 2021 Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Kabinett offers a clear, precise and pure, lovely slate-driven bouquet with citric fruit and some cassis and gooseberry aromas. Crystalline, linear and fresh on the palate, this is an elegant, lush and silky-textured, precise and almost sharp but also round and finely sweet Kabinett from the Himmelreich that shows red and black currant notes on the aftertaste. It’s complex and a wine of many layers. Raspberry and blackberry, plenty of perfume and spice, hazelnut, something in the way of dried herbs and earth. Medium-bodied, no shortage of red and black fruit, rose oil, but also something a little more meaty and savoury in the mix, with fresh acidity, kind of like pomegranate, fine emery board tannin grip, and a fine ‘minerally’ finish of excellent length. Frankland Estate Isolation Ridge Mourvedre 2021Since being planted in 2005, Mourvèdre has evolved with maturing vines to the point it is now ready to go under the Isolation Ridge label in its own right. It’s a variety that I really do like, especially from Frankland River where some very smart examples are starting to emerge. This is certainly one of those.
