Syrahmi Garden of Earthly Delights Chardonnay 2021It walks to the beat of its own drum and it does so successfully. Lemon curd, wheat, honeydew melon and assorted floral notes work in with earth, bran and cedar. If you called it kaleidoscopic you wouldn't be exaggerating. It's not thick with flavour (it's relatively lean), but everything here both spreads and gathers. It's quite grippy too, which isn't for everyone but it works here, picking up on the wine's inherent presence. CAMPBELL MATTINSON, Wine Companion

Bright and lively in the glass. Lifted aromas of grapefruit pith, just-ripe white stone fruit, white flowers, mineral and nutty oak. Concentrated, fine and balanced in flavour. It’s a tight wine, distinct green olive and lime rind bite, a little sour yoghourt, and quite some acidity here, a powdery chalky texture, with an olive brine savoury finish of zip and good length. The 23 is built on ease of operation. Slightly more forward than the 2022 with a solid push of fruit, plenty of citrus zest, green apple and edging on some more ripe, seemingly juicy characters that expand out nicely. Punchy acidity freshens things up and the all too important salty twang, that we expect from Chantemerle, makes itself known throughout. Like all of Boudin's wines the balance is what will carry it in the cellar, if required, but for me this is right in the zone for more early drinking. Typically excellent. ROSCOE

It’s now packaged in a Burgundy bottle and while the front label is more or less the same, it’s been tweaked. Anyway, you get the gist.Wow this is impressive. Pure, rich and commanding. Blackberry and sweet plum flavours cruise into malt, cedar, earth and orange rind. Tannin comes in long chains, both majestic and seamlessly well integrated. There’s a deal of oak here but the fruit is mighty and in any case, it’s hand-in-glove. It’s absolutely in the fuller, richer, sweeter style, but it’s also an absolute beauty. Incredibly dark and inky in the glass, almost black. Opulent aromas of liqueur chocolate, mulberry, stewed plums, mocha and sweet spice. So much going on here. The palate takes no prisoners, it's decadently rich and mouth-filling with lashings of dark fruit flavours, sweet oak, anise, graphite and pudding spice. There is a decent lick of tannin and acid doing its best to control the slurpy and viscous fruit, and it does a pretty smart job. Olivier Morin Bourgogne Blanc Chitry 'Constance' 2022Olivier Morin took over the family business in 1992, after a first life spent in the music world. The 14ha domaine is currently undergoing organic certification. When he took over, his parents were making just their three appellations: Aligoté, plus Chitryof both colours. The continuity of this approach is reflected in Olivier's 'Constance' cuvées, to which he has added an old-vine Bourgogne Chitry white called Olympe, after the original owner of the vines, and a single vineyard red, Vau de Puits. In 2022, hailstorms reduced yields by 60%, meaning this year’s wine includes a measure of purchased grapes. It’s a delicious, pulpy white that wafts from the glass with buttercup, fleshy stone fruit and citrus. The palate is attractively punchy and succulent, its’ satiny texture flecked with stone fruits, rock melon and sweet orange with a nip of reduction tying everything neatly together. Voyager Estate Chardonnay 2023Tim Shand has made such a profound impact since taking over as winemaker in ‘22 and while it’s early days, gee what’s on offer looks very, very good. Vintage ‘23 is his first complete harvest. Already subtlety is apparent, although plenty of flavour here with stone fruit and citrus, wafts of lemon verbena and celery seed. It’s flinty, spicy and creamy with nutty lees. This is moreish and the savoury edge comes through in tandem with tangy and juicy acidity, and almost a pop of saline tang to finish. Impressive. One of the most common misconceptions in wine is that every wine is as absolutely good as it can be. Most wines, rather, are made to their price point, or to their position in the winery’s range of wines. I’m not sure if it’s relevant to point this out here – it may not be – but I loved it when winemaker Tim Shand said this week that he had re-positioned Voyager Chardonnay to simply be “the best wine that it can be. It’s seventy bucks and it has to be worth that, wringing wet, every day, every time.”This is the best Voyager chardonnay in yonks. It’s all by degrees of course but every degree in wine is hard won. This wine has flavour and texture but it’s the length that gets you going. It shows smoke characters, grilled peach, lemon curd and a jasmine element. There are flint notes here, as a whisper – which is interesting, because Voyager Chardonnay generally doesn’t or hasn’t shown flint characters in the past. It works here. 2023 was Shand’s first full vintage in charge of Voyager’s winemaking and if this wine is an indication, we’re in for a ride. (95) CAMPBELL MATTINSON, The Wine Front

Vasse Felix DHJ1 Single Plot Chardonnay 2023In pure quality terms this is right up there with the Heytesbury release. It is though a cleaner, purer style, its grapefruit and stonefruit characters bell clear, its creamy mouthfeel so perfectly played and placed. I loved the 20222 release of this wine and I love this 2023 as well. It’s a wine of genuine power, noteworthy finesse and outstanding length. It is, essentially, chardonnay in all its glory. This set of wines from Verget in 2023 are such a pure delight and the Pierreclos En Tremblay a special highlight. There's an effortlessness to this wine that makes it so charming and just a pleasure to drink. Nothing is overworked. The fruit sings joyously and there's a lovely savoury, saline seam that plays off the sweeter elements so harmoniously. There's body, texture and weight here but the feeling overall here is one of energy and life! It delivers a blueprint for great, affordable and affable wine in Burgundy that's getting harder to find, which make this wine an even greater treasure.

Vanguardist 'V' Syrah 2023Vanguardist-farmed Rende vineyard bush vines, around 55 years old; 60% whole bunch, with about seven weeks on skins; matured in 2200L Slavonian oak. The cool vintage has its say. Refined, fragrant and elegant, but savoury and spicy, too. Distinct nebbiolo/nerello mascalese riffs, more the latter – an increasing theme at this address. Dried cranberry and cherry, freeze-dried raspberry and orange, from dehydrated peel to the bitter orange note in amaro, chinotto, Campari … five spice, clove, green cardamom, white pepper, alpine herbs, sour plum, dried mint, pressed flowers, warm terracotta. It’s finer of feel. Is it lesser for it? Nope. It’s laden with so much flavour and etched with ultra-fine but authoritative tannins and refreshing acidity. William Fevre Chablis 2022FIVE STARS - To bottle in November. The average age is 40 year old vines, and 10% in wood. Excellent long finish. Sources are Chablis and Chichée for half and the rest in Viviers, 50 year old vines. Well drained steep slope which though south facing is at altitude and stays fresh. A fresh lemon yellow. The nose is a little more subdued than the Petit Chablis but more classical. This too has the attractive saline bitterness of extreme youth, but the fruit builds beautifully on the palate. TOP VALUE - There is slightly better Chablis typicity present on the aromas of mineral reduction, iodine and cool white fleshed fruit.
