  1. Dry River Craighall Riesling 2022
    Dry River Craighall Riesling 2022
Intense riesling with layers of ripe tree fruit, citrus fruit and savoury characters supported by deliciously tangy acidity. Dry but not excessively austere and with an appealingly lengthy finish. An excellent result from a challenging vintage. (96) BOB CAMPBELL, The Real Review

  2. Schloss Gobelsburg Gaisberg Riesling 2021
    Schloss Gobelsburg Gaisberg Riesling 2021

The 2021 Riesling Ried Gaisberg is on gneiss, schist and amphibolite.
Crushed ivy and citrus leaf overlay an almost savory, salty notion of wet earth. The palate is rounded and juicy-almost bouncy with lively energy. Bright, lemon-fringed stone fruit notes skip away in such a joyful fashion that the underlying stony seriousness is almost skipped over. In coming years, the stoniness will gain the upper hand, but, for now, the playfulness of these aromas-leafy top notes and citric charm-quite rightly enjoy the limelight. This is lovely and slender, with a serious, stony, cool core and a beautifully long finish. (Bone-dry) ANNE KREBIEHL MW, wineadvocate.com

Delightfully blatantly aromatic - I mean three-feet-from-the-glass aromatic. Did I mention it also smells marvelous?…This wine, while snappy and bracing in the '21 "type," is a rare success in the everyday echelon… The wine leads with verbena, lemon balm and hyssop; it's more herbal than precisely mineral… It shows a sort of macro-terroir of Kamptal - of Austria overall, really - and while the weight and outlines are sleek and cool, the flavors are purely Austrian… It's another wine that held steady over the days…It's also the kind of wine I call "coniferous," (or fir when I'm being literal and Christmas Tree when I'm being colorful…) TERRY THEISE

The Riesling terraces are among the oldest vineyards cultivated by Schloss Gobelsburg. Complex aromas of ripe stone fruit and toast. A rich and powerful spice is outlined with just enough fruit and stone to carry it all the way home. Lively, shaping acidity and delicate citrus finish.  PAULA SIDORE, jancisrobinson.com

  3. The Eyrie Vineyards Pinot Gris 2020
The Eyrie Vineyards Pinot Gris 2020
This is the bar by which many Willamette Valley producers measure their own Pinot Gris. Made with certified organic grapes, the wine’s pale moonbeam colour casts its glow on aromas of orange blossom honey, lemon verbena and a trace of vanilla. Flavours of honeycomb, lemon sorbet and white grapefruit complement a lithesome texture backed by acidity that packs a pop.
    MICHAEL ALBERTY, Decanter

The low-yielding but high-quality 2020 season gave fruit of a density and concentration, Jason Lett categorising it alongside the greats of 1988 and 1998. Hand-picked fruit was destemmed, pressed and fermented in stainless steel tank before resting for 11 months on lees before bottling.

  7. Mauro Veglio Barolo DOCG 2021
    Mauro Veglio Barolo DOCG 2021
Made with grapes from four different vineyard sites located in three different townships, the classic 2021 Barolo from Mauro Veglio opens with aromas of red berry, hay, dark spice and a whiff of eucalyptus. Full-bodied, elegant and savory the palate offers red cherry, cranberry and star anise accompanied by fine-grained tannins and bright acidity. While it’s already almost accessible, it will also offer years of pleasure. KERIN O'KEEFE

  8. Mauro Veglio Barolo DOCG 2020
    Mauro Veglio Barolo DOCG 2020
The 2020 Barolo is redolent of sweet pipe tobacco, cedar, mint, dried cherry and incense. The blend of sites (50% La Morra and 50% Serralunga/Monforte) works so well here. Medium in body and gracious, with lovely understated presence, the straight Barolo is a fine introduction to this range. ANTONIO GALLONI, Vinous

Crisp and fruity developing notes of crushed strawberries, red currants, stones, peppercorns and dried flowers on the nose. Medium body with firm tannins and sharp acidity at this stage. Racy and vivid with plenty of energy at the crunchy and slightly tart finish. Drink after 2027. JAMES SUCKLING

  9. Trimbach Riesling Frederic Emile 2016 375ml
Trimbach Riesling Frederic Emile 2016 375ml
Luminous straw-yellow. Complex, mint-accented aromas of nectarine, tangerine and powdered stone, plus a hint of licorice. Then bright, juicy and dense, showing outstanding acid-sugar balance and a penetrating juiciness to the stone fruit and herbal flavors. Finishes multilayered and very long, displaying noteworthy clarity and limy cut on the saline finish. Wine lovers everywhere know just how great Frédéric Emile Rieslings can be, but this looks to be a real knockout in the making; I absolutely love this wine's mineral drive and precision. It pulls off the neat trick of being both very ageworthy and also lovely to drink right now. I was happy to know that my palate was still working after an extremely long day of tasting when I told Pierre that in this vintage of Frédéric Emile I found more of the Geisberg than the Osterberg (in most vintages, the wine is a blend of 60/40 Osterberg-Geisberg, at times even 70/30, but this year it's more like 55/45). (97+) IAN D'AGATA, Vinous Media

The lemon-sherbet note here is really beautiful. Then comes a wealth of herbs, ranging from thyme to parsley, with a touch of sea salt, before turning to more floral nuances, such as cherries and almond blossom. The powerful acidity seems to surround the whole mouth and makes this almost like licking a lemon; the unmistakable dryness is all the more enjoyable because of it. Long and very elegant on the finish. STUART PIGOTT

  12. Cavallotto Langhe Nebbiolo 2021
    Cavallotto Langhe Nebbiolo 2021
Dark and earthy to open, new leather and walnuts, wafts of bergamot, spice and dried flowers. It’s full-bodied, deep in flavour, red and black fruits, kind of rustic, but in a pleasing way, not least in the tea and grainy tannin grip department. There’s a cinch of orange peel bitterness, with a long grated nutmeg and slightly rusty tannin finish. Really opens up after some air. Such character. A very serious Lange Neb! GARY WALSH, The Wine Front

The word benchmark gets bandied around a lot, but this is a Nebbiolo that justifies that term from an already hyped vintage. This year’s wine is drawn exclusively from declassified, mostly young-vine fruit from the great Castiglione Falletto Cru of Bricco Boschis. Cropped at yields below 40 hl/ha, the grapes are entirely destemmed, and fermentation is spontaneous. Malolactic conversion was in cement tanks during the spring following harvest. The wine was aged for 18 months in Slavonian oak botti and bottled unfiltered.

  16. Hiedler Zobing Ried Heiligenstein 1ÖTW Riesling 2020
Hiedler Zobing Ried Heiligenstein 1ÖTW Riesling 2020

The 2020 Zöbing Ried Heiligenstein 1ÖTW Riesling is clear and crystalline on the nose yet initially rather discreet in its fruit expression. Intense, ripe apricot aromas emerge form the glass after a while. Crystalline, refined and elegant on the palate this, is a powerful, tight and firmly structured Heiligenstein that is still a bit caged and needs aeration or years to open up, refine and shine. The fruit is stewed and the texture accordingly rich and fleshy, whereas the finish remains crystalline, piquant and precise. This should be another gorgeous Heiligenstein in 10 years but in the Hiedler style. STEPHAN RHEINHARDT, vinous.com

    STAFF PICKS 2024 - FRANKE

Fairing from iron-rich soils of Serralunga, the Massolino family carves out a niche for themselves in Barolo as being wines you can age, but also enjoy young due to the modern-classic style. Large format Slovenian oak tempers the fine tannins and a youthful elegant red fruit of strawberries is backed up with crushed herbs and hints of star-anise. Delightful. FRANKE

The 2020 Barolo is a terrific wine in its peer group. It offers up scents of pine, cedar, sweet pipe tobacco and crushed herbs. Delicate and elegant, with gorgeous aromatics and tons of presence, the 2020 is impeccably done. This bottling has aged quite well in the past. I imagine that will also be true of the 2020. ANTONIO GALLONI

    Rizzi Barbaresco Nervo Fondetta 2017
Rose, violet and perfumed berry aromas lead the nose followed by whiffs of camphor and culinary spice. Full bodied, supremely elegant and surprisingly fresh for the hot vintage, the savory palate delivers ripe Marasca cherry, crushed raspberry, licorice and crushed mint alongside taut, refined tannins. Fresh acidity keeps it impeccably balanced. Drink 2022–2032. (95) KERRIN O'KEEFE, www.wineentusiast.com

The south-facing Nervo vineyard is located at an altitude of over 300 metres, which may account for its elegance. Ernesto Dellapiana and his son Enrico produce wines with a light touch, and their Nervo is aged in concrete tanks as well as casks. The red-fruit nose is intense and pure, and the attack supple and silky. There's a taut structure here, and fine acidity that keeps it lively and peppery. 28. Zind Humbrecht Pinot Gris Clos Jebsal 2021
Zind Humbrecht Pinot Gris Clos Jebsal 2021

Hang on to your hat! Here’s a dense and dangerous wine for a grape most wine drinkers think can only give no-brainers. Very compact and structured with a dark personality that some may find shocking, but what makes it that way is the gypsum marl minerality that is its soul. Brain-rattling freshness at the super stony finish. From biodynamically grown grapes. (97) STUART PIGOTT, jamessuckling.com

The 2021 Pinot Gris Clos Jebsal is a monopole for Zind-Humbrecht. It is located between Brand and Heimbourg, utterly different from both, with calcareous marl and gypsum on south-facing terraces. In the past, this was dedicated to making sweeter wines with botrytis. The vines were planted in 1983. The nose has a flicker of reduction, followed by an aromatic notion of pear, freshly turned earth and orange peel. The palate has concentration and flow, a russet pear texture and a salty, cool, mouth-watering core. The saltiness is more intense than the fruit. The beautiful, bone-dry finish is very appetizing ANNE KREBIEHL MW, Vinous Media

    Sth facing, 450m altitude, granite
This cru captures the first and last rays from the sun, hence the name 'inferno.' Heady notes of dried rose petals, dark chocolate and mountain herbs lure you in. The palate unfolds with layers of florals, spiced red cherries and mulch, held together by an architecture of tannins and energy. While its immediacy is undeniable and incredibly tempting this offers great aging potential. GABRIELLE POY

Poached strawberry and cherry, aniseed/liquorice root. Juicy liquorice-laced pumice stone and volcanic dusty tannin is terrific, and it's so spicy and long to close. What a specific and terroir driven wine this is. Unlike anything else. Tannins really rip here. Unreal. Next level in 2019.  Succulence and DNA of Nebbiolo is so firm and wonderful. GARY WALSH

From a south facing vineyard site near the Rhine river at 100 to 120 m altitude. The soils are mainly loess and loam with some gravel and a little bit of quarzite in the subsoil.

This is the lowest lying GG, leading with a composed nose of stonefruits spiked with ginger and earthy tones. With a few swirls it ramps up in intensity, vanilla and peach flavours emerge alongside delicate herbal delights. There's a lovely play between exuberance and subtlety, it's a delightful tease. A long and linear drive on the palate gains power and traction pulling in more flavours along the way. Fine chewy phenolics add dimension to the finish. This has a long life ahead. 41. Rizzi Barbaresco Nervo DOCG 2020
    Rizzi Barbaresco Nervo DOCG 2020
Out of all the brilliant Rizzi range of Barbaresco, I have a bit of a soft spot for the Nervo bottling. It doesn't carry the gravitas of their Pajore plot but I love the understatement in the wine with its lilting and delicate aromatics and  fine, detailed palate. Pure, with a lovely austerity on the back end.

In 2020, it strikes me as just a touch more open so the red fruits and bruised strawberry jump up a little more than usual, and the dusting of spice, red petals, dried mint and cut hay aromatics are beautifully accessible. So much so, it's hard to draw yourself away to actually drink the thing. But, when you do the just-right-ripeness gives you fruit that ranges from raspberry to cranberry all draped in complexing brown spice. The structure is there but like all Nervos, it's fine and ever so long giving the balancing austerity of powdery tanins to the effusiveness of the fruit. I love it. MICHAEL MCNAMARA, PWS

Enticingly fragrant, the 2020 Nervo from Rizzi opens with heady aromas of crushed berry, Alpine herb, pressed rose and whiffs of new leather and spice. Elegantly structured and savory, the full-bodied palate features ripe raspberry, juicy cherry, star anise, hints of baking spice and blood orange. Taut refined tannins and fresh acidity keep it well balanced. Drink 2026–2035. Drink 2025–2030. KERIN O'KEEFE

Joh Jos Prum Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Kabinett 2022
Here is a great Mosel Kabinett that needs a bit more time to show what it is really made of. Still very young with a pronounced yeasty character that slowly recedes with aeration, but the white peach and honeysuckle aromas that emerge are stunning. Extremely vibrant and precise, the slatey acidity making this fabulously graceful. As pure as an Alpine stream running with glacier water. STUART PIGOTT, jamessuckling.com

    Rizzi Barbaresco Pajore DOCG 2020
Menthol, dark spice, resin and violet are some of the aromas that come to the forefront on this full-bodied red. On the linear, focused palate, firm, fine-grained tannins accompany sour cherry, pomegranate, blood orange and star anise. It’s still rather austere and needs a few more years to fully come around. Gianfranco Alessandria Barolo San Giovanni DOCG 2018
This is a beautiful wine with a lively and layered bouquet, topped off with a bright cherry highlight. The Gianfranco Alessandria 2018 Barolo San Giovanni continues to evolve in the glass and show its complexity. A second round of aromas includes spice, sweet oak and rust. This estate ferments in steel with maceration times lasting up to 10 days. This keeps those primary aromas intact. MONICA LARNER
