Richter Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Kabinett 2021The 2021 Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Kabinett offers a clear, precise and pure, lovely slate-driven bouquet with citric fruit and some cassis and gooseberry aromas. Crystalline, linear and fresh on the palate, this is an elegant, lush and silky-textured, precise and almost sharp but also round and finely sweet Kabinett from the Himmelreich that shows red and black currant notes on the aftertaste. A gorgeous Kabinett that has to be aged for 10-15 years. Sourced from 80-year-old vines on pure gray slate. A pét nat made from Riesling, but from multiple vintages. Wines are stored in the coldest part of the cellars then blended as needed and moved to warmer areas to encourage secondary fermentation.

Terroir Sense Fronteres Negre 2022Prizing finesse over concentration, Serbian-born vigneron Tatjana Peceric has a beautiful touch with Montsant’s high-grown Garnacha and Cariñena. Except for the skin-contact white Brisat, the wines are fermented as whole bunches in concrete, amphorae and stainless steel (no oak is used), and extraction is as gentle as possible. In the cellar, Peceric works with the infusion model—a buzzy term for sure, yet we should not forget that this kind of no-bells-and-whistles winemaking is scarce in this corner of Europe. In short, the grapes are gently crushed by foot and taken off their skins at between eight and 12 days to continue fermentation. “We don’t need to extract tannin,” says Peceric.
Another key to the style and quality here is that regulations allow for harvesting early for lower alcohol; minimum levels here are 12.5% for reds and 11.5% for whites (compared to 13.5% for reds and 13% for whites in the DOQ Priorat). This year’s Negre is a pure Garnacha, from mature vines sited around Capçanes. The 25-year-old (on average) bush vines sit at 350 metres on the mixed sandy clay soils (known locally as panal) with varied exposures.

Jinkies! This is a different beast. They have replaced the estate with this, which is essentially a "Village" or maybe a "Premier Cru" from them. All classified sites now. I was really looking forward to sitting down and actually having a good look at this new wine from one of my fave Rizza producers. It did not disappoint. It carries all that rocky, pithy, just underripe stone fruit characters I love from the estate. The core is a little more lively than usual, they are always energetic and usually spine tingling in their attack, this is a bit more approachable and piquant. Long, and as is the case with so many of these 21s, the finish is all mineral and saline, so much so it pushes the fruit to the side. A final lick of not insubstantial extract really kicks the finish in to overdrive. Excellent. ROSCOE

Vivacious and uber refreshing, this positively hums with a primal energy and delivers it all with an emphatic snap of rocky mineral tension that clings to the medium bodied, pithy, zesty fruit that struts across your mouth like it has somewhere important to be. I love its vim and vigour, at no point is your palate not fully engaged and enlivened. It carries all this character with seeming ease as it slowly unwinds at the back.
The next day there was a distinct florality and a potent lemon oil note that really got me excited. Also the more textural, phenolic, extract components were a little more positively influential. The nose has a faint hint of melted butter and hazelnut. The small harvest meant that it needed to go into used barrique, because there was not enough to fill a foudre. The result is very creamy and smooth, on a slender body, with much lemon freshness. While svelte, this is generous and gorgeously smooth. Massolino Langhe Riesling 2022Screwcap. Massolino planted three clones of Riesling in 2014 in a cool and windswept parcel in Monforte d’Alba. This rocky and limestone-rich plot sits at the hill’s apex at 450-500 metres, just outside the Barolo appellation boundary. After a few years of experimenting with amphora, steel and various types and sizes of oak, the wine today ferments exclusively in a 5,000-litre cement tank, where it rests on lees for nine months.
The use of concrete is hardly commonplace when vinifying Riesling, yet Massolino feels the wine’s brightness and energy merits this approach. It’s hard to disagree, given the coiled energy and purity. It’s a lovely vintage for this wine, with bell-clear apple blossom and white flower flavours allied to the intensity of palate-coating fruitiness and a crunchy lemon and lemongrass close.

Robert Weil Kiedricher Riesling Trocken 2022The 2022 Riesling Kiedricher is from two upper parcels in the of the Wasseros, above the Gräfenberg, which means rivulet, evident in small springs, fed by the forested top of the slope, also on mica schist. This is higher and cooler. One-third is made in wood and two-thirds in stainless steel, from ripe and super-clean fruit. The nose is aromatic, suggesting Reine Claude plum, white peach and green pear skin. Clarity also defines the palate where riper stone fruit shines, framed by grapefruit skin. This has serenity, tautness and substance, despite slenderness. Mouth-watering zestiness appears on the finish. This is a real achievement at an annual volume of more than 100,000 bottles. Dry River Craighall Riesling 2020The 2020 Craighall Vineyard Riesling is so taut and persistent! The wine feels quiet, but then it courses across the palate and soars long through the finish, showing the years of potential unfurling it can do, given the time to do so. There's talc and citrus pith, paraffin and white flowers, pepper and cracked fennel seeds. There is a fresh enoki mushroom and white miso character that feathers the edges of this wine. Exceptional concentration of fruit flavour here. This is straight and direct but wow it has a charge to it. Lime, chalk, white flower and wet slate flavours storm through the palate in emphatic fashion. There’s an extra note to the finish that I can’t quite place but I’ll call it brine splashed on potpourri splashed on rocks.
