Cavallotto Langhe Nebbiolo 2021Dark and earthy to open, new leather and walnuts, wafts of bergamot, spice and dried flowers. It’s full-bodied, deep in flavour, red and black fruits, kind of rustic, but in a pleasing way, not least in the tea and grainy tannin grip department. There’s a cinch of orange peel bitterness, with a long grated nutmeg and slightly rusty tannin finish. Really opens up after some air. Such character. A very serious Lange Neb! The word benchmark gets bandied around a lot, but this is a Nebbiolo that justifies that term from an already hyped vintage. This year’s wine is drawn exclusively from declassified, mostly young-vine fruit from the great Castiglione Falletto Cru of Bricco Boschis. Cropped at yields below 40 hl/ha, the grapes are entirely destemmed, and fermentation is spontaneous. Malolactic conversion was in cement tanks during the spring following harvest. Hurley Lodestone Pinot Noir 2022Lodestone is north-facing and the warmest of the three sites. But it’s planted to the Burgundian clones 114, 115 and 777 (along with some MV6), and the soils the vines are planted in are rockier. (The Hurley Vineyard is currently for sale, if anyone is interested.)
This is an excellent release. Taut, perfumed, meaty in essence but pretty at the same time. Floral. Its tastes of game, black cherries and strawberries-dipped-in-chocolate, the latter of which makes it sound ‘sweet’ but it’s not; there are so many earth/spice/smoke/meat characters here that it largely comes across as savoury. Domaine de Bellene Savigny Les Beaune Rouge Jean Ferte 1er 2022This is a relatively new wine to the Bellene releases and like the Francois Potel Homage wine, this is a blend of two sources, 1er Cru Haut Jarrons and 1er Cru Peuillets.
Perfumed cherry, drying petals, turned earth and limestone create the backdrop for a palate that is beautifully pure fruited and brimming with energy. Like many of the Bellene 2022s it has the combination of ripe fruit and then the driving limestone drying structure that ultimately gives this wine so much energy and lift. It finsihes with a lovely chewy tannin profile. I'd love to see this with some duck; lively "crunchy" character of the wine would be great with food. For the money, it's really smart Burgundy.
