Calvados, Pinot noir, chardonn...

The 2021 Pinot Noir is svelte and balanced; it's really settled into itself now at two years post-harvest. There's a nice, fleshy green parsley note on the nose. The fruit tastes ripe and fleshy and feels it in the mouth too. Nice mineral acidity shapes the wine and keeps it alive in the mouth. This is super pleasurable drinking here. There are pomegranate pearls and pink peppercorns. There is energy here. 13% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.

This is composed of 61.5% Te Muna Road Vineyard, with the balance from in town. It was plunged once daily and spent 20 days on the skins. Aging was in 22% new oak for 11 months, with a further nine months in tank. Bottled unfined and unfiltered. ERIN LARKIN, The Wine Advocate

Most if not all escarpment Pinots Noir need to be given the time to develop, build complexities and show their true potential. This was the legacy that Larry Mackenna and his team set, today’s team led by Tim Bourne is continuing this legacy easily showcased in this wine. Very good colour, quite deep and retains a good tint of purple in the rim. Wood-spice and a hint of Campari to sniff; the palate full and intense, loaded with tannins which add grip and persistence. Long, long carry. A rich, powerful, decadent pinot which is offering much right now but also promises a bright future. This wine punches above its weight  (96) HUON HOOKE

Lower Derwent sourced fruit, essentially from the outer suburbs of Hobart, planted nigh on 40 years ago. Dense plantings. Lots of layers here. Bracken, shiitake dashi, darker cherry and freshly grown moss, spruce and other forestry allusions. Dense, pliant and convincing, this is excellent mid-weighted Tassie pinot. (95) JAMES SUCKLING

A bright, complex pinot noir... Pure red and dark cherry, raspberry and wild strawberry fruits with hints of Chinese barbecue shop, five-spice, teacake, mushroom, purple floral and subtle leaf litter tones. There is a nice sense of space and clarity in this wine, fine acidity providing the pulse and a sustained red-fruited finish studded with game, amaro and spice. (95) JAMES HALLIDAY'S WINE COMPANION

Light straw-yellow; reserved aromas of straw/hay and tealeaf, nougat later, and pleasant more fruit-driven flavour, attractive, tight and refreshingly dry. Slightly biscuity oak. Reserved, possibly still a bit in its shell and needing more time, but has the makings of a very smart chardonnay. HUON HOOKE, therealreview.com

Yields were way down in '22; thankfully, the wines are generally very good to excellent, this in the latter camp. Pristine flavours comprising white peach and lemon, lightly spiced and offset by fluffy, creamy lees. The palate is superfine, the oak superbly integrated and the finish absurdly long and fabulous. Grown on deep alluvial river sands and stone left behind by the Esk River, vines experience a maritime influence where warm, dry days are followed by a cool sea breeze.

Handpicked fruit was wholebunch pressed direct to 500L puncheons with full solids. 10% of which was new French oak. After a few days, wild fermentation spontaneously started and progressed for 20 days with a maximum temperature of 24 deg C.

Post fermentation the wine was stirred a few times and left to mature at cool and allowed to go through full Malolactic Fermentation. Stirring every 3- 4 weeks. Minimal sulphur was added after 5 months. After a total of 9 months of barrel maturation the wine was racked to tank for bottling. No fining or filtration.

I see the Chardonnays from this season being quite nutty, and certainly texturally wide, which follows the conditions of the season. The wine is floral-particularly chamomile-with lashings of crushed nuts and red apple skins, jasmine and crushed shells, a hint of wisteria and shortcrust pastry. The acidity remains true to the house style here, which is verging on austere, certainly incredibly juicy, penetrating and spicy. Beautiful. 12.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Nose is shy at first, then opens out to fine spice, sea foam, poached green apple, lemon curd, a flint-laden mineral lift and a hint of fresh peppercorn. The palate sings with fruit intensity and tightly strung Gingin acid, both of which bode well for time in the cellar. A delicious Chinese greens crunch and a frame of fine, voluminous fruit carefully wrapped in top-notch oak. (95) DECANTER

A riper vintage has only added more fruit definition to an otherwise savoury and super-fine wine. Some moreish sulphides tease the richer flavours of creamy curd-like lees and spicy, slick oak, with the fruit hovering between lemon, grapefruit and makrut; mouth-watering acidity too. The wines under this label have been quite a revelation in recent years. This one from the excellent '22 vintage is another cracker. It's a precise and elegantly crafted wine with a steely minerally core. Aromas of pear and quince paste with a little citrus tang. The palate has a slightly crystalline minerality with a lingering finish. Has a distinctive sea spray talky character which is most appealing. (95) RAY JORDAN

This is an elegant chardonnay with layers of roasted almonds, white sesame, apricots, pie crust and peach pits. Full-bodied, nutty and delicious, with a fresh minerality and a creamy and seamless finish. Vegan. JAMES SUCKLING

A touch of funk here, some smoky sulfides and toasty barrel derived character allied with nougat honey and toasted nuts. A wine of refinement and restraint as well as good depth of flavour, the refreshing acidity towing the flavour long through an extended finish. (Karridale fruit, Gingin clone; underwent malolactic). Well this is the Gin Gin clone from Karridale, gets the whole malo thing, and 40% new oak. Heavy bottles still, unlike Leeuwin and Cullen, who are leading the way in this respect.

Powerful wine, and glossy, and buttery, cashew nut richness, toast. ginger and clove, with some struck match, pear and grapefruit. It’s a slippery viscous and powerful affair, toffee and grapefruit, mango richness, maybe a little bit brassy and bold, but saline and savoury to close, with a finish of fine length and chalky texture. Glowing purple, an exuberant nose, with abundant juicy dark berry fruit energy. All destemmed. A large jug of this would go down handsomely of a summer's evening. Excellent fruit-acid balance, some blackcurrants at the back. Lovely. JASPER MORRIS MW

An expressive nose of poached plum, violet and earth gives way to racy and well-detailed flavors that conclude in a mildly austere sneaky long finish. Note that the supporting tannins are sufficiently supple such that this could be approached upon release. BURGHOUND

Deep colour, a glossy purple. Ripe, plush and fruitful. Nice undertow of spice, but the array of dark fleshed fruit is what come across most prominently, it's well rounded and fulsome but the underpinned by fresh acidity and fine, sweet tannins. Nice wine. Some airy, spring forest aromas, little poke and prod of minerality, a subtly sappy feel. Yeah, nice wine! ROSCOE

Light-tinted, supple pinot noir with cherry, fresh herb, raspberry, chestnut and spicy oak flavours. Elegant wine in a relatively light style and with surprising power and a backbone of peppery tannins. BOB CAMBELL, The Real Review

; Hua Nui, Winery and Pencarrow. The fruit is a blend of Clones 667, 777, 115, 10/5, MV6 and Abel. All handpicked with 5% whole cluster. A period of cold soak followed by wild fermentations and gentle pumpovers and plunging. The wine is pressed to French Oak barrels and left to mature for a period of 10 months during which time it undergoes malolactic fermentation to soften the wine and add complexity.

There are seven single vineyards of Ghost Rock, per se, this is one of them, and it gets made each year. Wild ferment, no additions, no filtering and no fining, a touch of sulphur for preserving. Organic farmed.

It’s got softness and spread, a suppleness and flow, dark cherry, earthiness, sappy botanical elements, a touch of game meat and woody-savoury elements. It’s so pure and yet rich, a generosity in its layers of flavour, aroma, texture. It’s got a faint core of crushed rock minerality too. A wild streak, perhaps, lending charm and personality. SPECIAL BUY - A single-vineyard wine from the Strathmore Vineyard, planted with MV6 and Abel clones in the late 1990s; 20% whole bunches. Matured in 30% new puncheons and barriques. A deepish crimson ruby. More darkly fruited and concentrated than last year's version. Dark cherries, damson plums, peony and spice on the bouquet. Saturates the palate, which is concentrated, structured, fleshy and very long. It's so good now but will get even better over the next six to eight years and probably longer. Another superb 2023 Geelong pinot from the two Bens. (97) PHILIP RICH, Halliday Wine Companion

Last year’s release was made with MV6 and Abel clone pinot noir, on vines planted in 1998 at Sutherlands Creek in the Moorabool Valley. I assume this release is the same.

It presents a bed of fruit-filled flavour, all macerated and strewn with herbs, and while it sings and impresses through the mainstay of the palate, it’s the finish that really moves the bar higher. This wine pushes flavour well beyond the point where it had every reason to stop. The winemaker probably won’t like me saying this, but it’s a Pinot Noir that feels very Australian, in a positive way. It’s varietal, but it feels “very MV6”. Its flavours nestle into the palate, rather than being over-eager to lift off and out. It has that feel of being settled, like a cat after it’s finished kneading your lap. And yet it has that finish, that extra soar. It’s pretty special. (95+) CAMPBELL MATTINSON, The Wine Front

A vibrant cherry red in the glass. there’s lovely complex aromatics here, dried herbs, blueberry, bramble, sap, Asian spice and ferrous earth. Bright and lively on the palate with lashings of red and blue fruits, tangy, briary acidity and savoury, supple and textured tannins. Long, layered, mouth-filling and pure in flavour. A lovely mix of nectarines, apple danish and white button mushrooms pique the senses. With air whiffs of crushed rock and smoked meats appear. The core is awash with flavours of stone fruits and pomme fruits, earth and spice – layers build upon each other. This is a sophisticated and stylish chardonnay that doesn’t reveal its hand fully – it plays a cat-and-mouse game. Subtle oak spices remain deferential to the core of finely etched fruit. A fine framing tail of acidity and phenolics signs off. Very stylish indeed. GABRIELLE POY

Complex and highly lifted aromas of citrus blossom, Meyer lemon and white nectarine combine with gun smoke and freshly grilled nuts. The palate is soft and full yet refined and complex, driven by fine acidity that flows into a creamy, velvety texture. The finish is round yet precise leaving a sensation that is long and moreish. Boysenberry, strawberry and red cherry flavours come threaded with sweet, twiggy spice, cedarwood oak also nestled neatly therein. This is well structured in general and will both hold and mature for a number of years, but it’s also readily accessible right now; it’s arguably the most accessible wine in the Mulline range this year. SPECIAL VALUE - A single-vineyard wine from the Surf Coast, the vineyard planted in 2001; 40% whole bunches and matured in 25% new barriques. A bright crimson ruby. From a cool vineyard and it shows, in a good, way. Aromas of strawberries, cranberries and a little spice. You barely notice the whole bunches, which are already integrating into the wine. Elegantly wrought, delicate and persistent on the palate. Thoughtful winemaking here and I like how Ben has worked with the fruit, rather than trying to make something the wine isn't. Pretty and lifted aromas of dried herbs, sap, spice, cherry, wild raspberry and mossy under-brush. Bright, lively and crunchy in flavour. There's a drive of snappy red fruits and bramble, along with chalky, grippy tannins and pointed acidity. Quite linear at the moment and will benefit from some bottle age. It walks to the beat of its own drum and it does so successfully. Lemon curd, wheat, honeydew melon and assorted floral notes work in with earth, bran and cedar. If you called it kaleidoscopic you wouldn't be exaggerating. It's not thick with flavour (it's relatively lean), but everything here both spreads and gathers. It's quite grippy too, which isn't for everyone but it works here, picking up on the wine's inherent presence. CAMPBELL MATTINSON, Wine Companion

Feeling tired and sluggish? A glass of this pure, racy Purus will bring spark back into your life. It’s more than the refreshing acidity, which is moreish and energising, there’s a light film of citrus and white stone fruit, a little spice, a very fine layering of texture and oak. Bright and lively in the glass. Lifted aromas of grapefruit pith, just-ripe white stone fruit, white flowers, mineral and nutty oak. Concentrated, fine and balanced in flavour. Peach, nectarine, citrus and crunchy acidity are all at play. The finish is dry and grippy and the length is impressive. Tightly wound at the moment and will benefit from cellaring. Purus. Karridale. Dijon clones 76, 95 and clone 5. 40% new oak.

White peach, grapefruit, spicy clove and ginger oak, green olive and fennel, white flowers. It’s a tight wine, distinct green olive and lime rind bite, a little sour yoghourt, and quite some acidity here, a powdery chalky texture, with an olive brine savoury finish of zip and good length. It’s shelly and maybe sits on the cusp of ripeness, though it does have energy, and, I feel a bit of upside given a few more years in bottle. GARY WALSH, The Wine Front

The 23 is built on ease of operation. Slightly more forward than the 2022 with a solid push of fruit, plenty of citrus zest, green apple and edging on some more ripe, seemingly juicy characters that expand out nicely. Punchy acidity freshens things up and the all too important salty twang, that we expect from Chantemerle, makes itself known throughout. Like all of Boudin's wines the balance is what will carry it in the cellar, if required, but for me this is right in the zone for more early drinking. Typically excellent. ROSCOE

There’s a fruit party going on here with loads of wild strawberries, red cherries and cranberries, spicy, too with snips of fresh basil and menthol plus heady florals mainly roses. The palate is mid-weighted, and a fruit succulence comes through so, too, layers of tannins with the sweet oak adding a hint of bitter green walnut on the finish. I pretty much never drink any samples, because it’s not a good habit to get into, though maybe a few swallows might make a summer while I’m actually tasting, but hey, that’s what I call the FCE (Full Consumer Experience). Anyway, I had a few glasses of this last night while watching the documentary about Ennio Morricone – “Ennio” – which is currently streaming on Stan. Very good too, and this, in a way, while not Italian, seemed a suitable style of wine for that show. I cooked my children some duck breast for tea, with jasmine rice, steamed greens and plum sauce, but I didn’t eat any of that, though this wine would have been most excellent with it. I had a piece of bread with some Laughing Cow cheese on it. Economies must be made.

Fine, kind of stony, perfumed, cherry and red fruit, gentle spiced oak, something a little earthy/autumnal too. It’s light to medium-bodied, pleasantly sappy, with a good crunch to acidity, really pleasing pumice stone tannin, and a offers a juicy/savoury finish of excellent length, with a little blood orange bite.
