Calvados, Pinot noir, Champagn...

A fresh, pure and layered nose consists of liqueur-like dark berry fruit, plum, violet, earth and touches of spice. There is excellent richness to the slightly more refined medium weight flavors that coat the palate with dry extract where the supporting structure arrives all at once on the grippy and mildly drying finish. I suspect that this will round into form once the sulfur addition is more completely integrated. BURGHOUND

I haven't always been the biggest fan of Nicolas' version of Chaignots - although I love the vineyard with its the nod to the "silk" of Vosne a nice counterpoint to the rusticity of Nuits. This year this is a beautiful example and the best I've seen from him. MICHAEL McNAMARA

It's one of those wines only Burgundy can toss up - it's a parcel of Grand Cru Echezeaux that's not designated Grand Cru but village. It certainly doesn't look at all village level. Super polished and full of Vosne Flagey richness. 

Easily the best version I've seen of this in years, and that's not damning it with faint praise, this wine is a star of the range, but this is superb Burgundy. I opened it the other night. Wow, what a wine and gives you everything you think Burgundy should MICHAEL MCNAMARA

Named after the light cavalry of Napoléon Bonaparte, in which the soldiers were the first to use the art of sabring, the Cuvée des Hussards is powerful and expressive. This cuvee was elaborated from 85% Chardonnay and 15% Pinot Noir coming from Premier and Grand Cru vineyards older than 40 years old. 2012 is regarded as the vintage of reference of the last decade.

Slightly more deeply pitched aromas are comprised by notes of violet, plum and dark raspberry. The texture of the sweet, delicious and caressing medium-bodied flavors contrast markedly with that of the firm and slightly chewy finish that offers excellent depth and persistence. This isn't especially refined but it works anyway plus it's a wine that should repay 7 to 10 years of cellaring. OUTSTANDING. BURGHOUND

This was vinified with a high percentage of whole clusters and it shows as the nose is extremely floral and spicy with its mix of both red and dark raspberry scents. There is fine volume to the velvety middleweight flavors that possess a seductive mouthfeel, all wrapped in a dusty bitter pit fruit-inflicted finish. This is a very good Vosne villages that is worth considering. (OUTSTANDING) BURGHOUND

The 2022 Pavie Macquin is stellar, as it was en primeur. Inky blue/purplish fruit, licorice, new leather, spice and plum run through this powerful Saint-Émilion. Silky in the glass, it boasts plush, seamless tannins and fine balance. As always, Pavie Macquin is very sexy-one of the most sensual and hedonistic wines of the vintage. Another wine that's going to flirt with perfection is the 2022 Château Pavie Macquin, and this might be the finest vintage I've ever tasted from this address. A blend of 80% Merlot, 19% Cabernet Franc, and a splash of Cabernet Sauvignon, it reveals an inky purple hue as well as a stunning bouquet of pure cassis, liquid black raspberries, truffle, scorched earth, and graphite. Full-bodied, concentrated, and massive on the palate, it may be the largest-scaled Pavie Macquin ever produced. But don't let that scare you off - it stays flawlessly balanced, has pure, fine-grained tannins, and a great finish. I'll be a buyer. (96-98+) JEB DUNNUCK

The 2022 Larcis Ducasse is a huge, vertical wine. Readers will have to be patient, as the 2022 will need quite a few years to shed some of its considerable baby fat. Dense dark red fruit, new leather, licorice, rose petal and mocha are all broadly sketched. Imposing and vertical in build, this is immensely promising. The 2022 spent 14 months in oak (40% 225-liter barrels, 40% 500-liter barrels and 20% foudre), then three months in cement. I can't wait to see how this develops. Tasted on multiple occasions and one of the legendary wines in the making from this vintage, the 2022 Château Larcis Ducasse clocks in as 86% Merlot and 14% Cabernet Franc that's still resting in 55% new French oak. A hypothetical blend of the 2005 and 2018, it's a deep, powerful, opulent Saint-Emilion offering an incredible array of black cherries, blackberries, smoked tobacco, chocolate, and graphite-driven aromas and flavors. With a rich, full-bodied, expansive mouthfeel, it has ultra-fine tannins, beautiful symmetry in its tannins, acidity, and fruit, no hard edges, and a killer finish. I was lucky enough to taste this on four separate occasions and I thought it had the potential to be a perfect wine every time.(98-100) JEB DUNNUCK

Beautiful clarity of fruit with raspberries and currants on the nose. Roses and other flowers too. It's almost hard to describe, but there's a real purity. Full body, with fabulous balance and depth. It has everything in the right place. Best ever? (98) JAMES SUCKLING

A wine that could easily be mistaken for a First Growth, the 2010 Rauzan-Ségla is an incredibly powerful, full-bodied wine by this estate's standards, yet it nevertheless holds onto a terrific sense of elegance as well as perfect balance. A huge nose of blackcurrants, smoked earth, tobacco, lead pencil, and spice give way to a concentrated, blockbuster styled Margaux that has thrilling depth of fruit, masses of ripe tannins, and great length and finesse on the finish. This brilliant wine is just now seemingly on the edge of its drink window and offers immense pleasure, yet it has another 30-40 years of life ahead of it. Along with the 2015 and 2016, it's the greatest wine made at this estate in the past two decades. (98) JEB DUNNUCK

From a site surrounded by dense forest on two sides, the 2022 Chardonnay DuMOL Estate Vineyard is a bright straw hue and has a more vibrant aromatic nose of fresh mint, bright lime, flint, crushed stones, and white peach. Medium to full-bodied, it boasts a remarkably firm structure with a bit of tannin, a chalky texture, and a savory slanting profile, and it's long and persistent on the finish. It has an assertive but crystalline feel and a crunchy brightness. It demands a bit of time (96) JEB DUNNUCK

The 2022 Chardonnay DuMOL Estate Vineyard is a heady, extroverted wine. Orchard fruit, tangerine peel, spice, mint, baked apple tart and strong floral overtones soar from the glass. This mid-weight, dynamic Chardonnay is long on energy and complexity. Aeration brings out lovely textural resonance. (95) ANTONIO GALLONI

From the estate's top vineyard, planted with 100% Calera clone in more clay soil, the 2022 Pinot Noir DuMOL Estate Vineyard boasts a ripe ruby color and classic aromas of pure cherries, candied roses, sweet Asian spices, and sweet sap. Medium-bodied, it's elegant and refined on the palate, with a silky texture, an approachable feel, and a fresh, clean, soft, stony finish. (96) JEB DUNNUCK

Rather flamboyant, with ripe strawberry and iron notes and iodine undertones. Full and flavorful, yet with framed and polished gorgeous fruit and hints of strawberry tart and pie crust at the end. Sixty percent of the 2022 Pinot Noir Finn comes from the Bressay Vineyard with Calera selection and the rest from old vines on Occidental Road, with unknown plant material (planted with eight or so clones) that they pick all at one time, which adds a lot of complexity to this wine. It opens to complex and layered aromas of kirsch, fresh violets, sweet tobacco, and mossy earth, followed on the palate by a complete wine with velvety tannins and harmonious acidity, everything coming together seamlessly. A stunning wine, it's one of the best wines of the vintage. It's going to be hard to hold in the cellar, but it will be worth it (100) JEB DUNNUCK

Beginning with the striking, pale copper color, this is very unconventional rosé champagne. Wonderful fruit aromas that range from cherry and wild strawberry to persimmon and candied orange with a touch of sushi ginger. Then comes the mouth-filling and well-structured palate that has an amazing grainy-chalky feel to it, unlike anything else in this category. Very long, saline finish. A cuvée of pinot noir with a small amount of chardonnay that was vinified in amphoras. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold. JAMES SUCKLING

The NV Dame-Jane is 100% Pinot Noir vinified and aged in amphora. Bright and light on its feet, the Dame-Jane is brisk and yet also shows quite a bit of depth. Crushed red berry fruit, rose petal, mint, crushed rocks and hard candy all grace this super-expressive, mid-weight Rosé. This release is based on 2019, with 40% reserve wines. Grand Cru Classé

The 2019 Pape-Clément was a real show-stopper from barrel. Now in bottle since summer 2021, it has a more refined nose that I feel is perhaps just a little closed in as it approaches its first winter. Aeration reveals some lovely rose petal and incense aromas (there’s something almost Burgundian, Morey-Saint-Denis–like about its purity). The palate is extremely well balanced with velvety tannins and perfectly judged acidity. The oak (65% new, in the form of 400-liter barrels that have been employed since 2018) are beautifully integrated. This fans out wonderfully on the finish. One of the finest releases from Pape-Clément in recent years. NEAL MARTIN

There is very good color to the exuberantly floral-suffused nose, in particular violet, that is comprised mostly by notes of black cherry and earth that are trimmed in discreet wood influence. There is excellent density and vibrancy to the bigger bodied flavors that exude a subtle minerality on the dusty and bitter chocolate-inflected finish. This well-made effort is very much built to age and I would recommend not touching a bottle for at least 7 to 8 years. (Outstanding) BURGHOUND

The gorgeous balance on the center palate makes this one of the best wines from here in years. Medium to full body, firm and silky tannins and a flavorful yet subtle finish. Fine.

Deep purple-black colored, the 2018 La Fleur de Gay delivers bold notions of baked plums, mulberries and blackberry preserves with touches of tar, bay leaves and truffles. Full-bodied and rich, with a plush texture, it has soft acid and a spicy finish.

Antonio Galloni            86-88
The 2018 La Fleur de Gay is a fruity, supple Pomerol that will drink well with minimal cellaring. Dark cherry, mocha, cedar, tobacco, licorice and menthol add lovely aromatic nuance as this pretty, silky Pomerol develops in the glass.

This is also exuberantly floral in character with notes of rose petal, lilac, and violet on the earthy red berry fruit aromas though there is a hint of volatile acidity lurking in the background. The rich, velvety and seductively textured medium weight flavors exude evident minerality on the firm, serious and youthfully austere finish. (OUTSTANDING) - BURGHOUND

Lots of red and black fruits, tobacco, saddle leather, and a kiss of iron all emerge from the 2005 Château Lagrange, a beautiful Saint-Julien that has polished tannins, a great mid-palate, and outstanding length. I love its overall purity, as well as its complexity, and it's in the early stages of its prime drinking window with another 15-20 years of prime drinking ahead of it. JEB DUNNUCK, TASTED 2024

Tasted single blind at Southwold. A very fresh, well-defined nose with blackberry, damson, graphite and cedar - natural and elegant. The palate displays superb concentration even compared to the strong line-up of Saint Julien 2005s. Cedar and blackberry on the entry, a little earthiness that I have not notice previously but still that superb balance and focus with a harmonious finish. Succinct. Wonderful. Drink 2012-2030. Once again the provocative words "the best ever made" appear in my tasting notes. In twenty-eight years, I have never tasted a Lagrange as amazing as this 2005. Its dense ruby/purple color is accompanied by pure notes of creme de cassis, cedar, spice box, and a hint of cherries. Full-bodied, powerful, and opulent, with high tannin as well as extract in addition to great freshness, definition, and length, this long-lived beauty should be at its finest between 2012-2030.
