It’s complex and a wine of many layers. Raspberry and blackberry, plenty of perfume and spice, hazelnut, something in the way of dried herbs and earth. Medium-bodied, no shortage of red and black fruit, rose oil, but also something a little more meaty and savoury in the mix, with fresh acidity, kind of like pomegranate, fine emery board tannin grip, and a fine ‘minerally’ finish of excellent length. Frankland Estate Isolation Ridge Mourvedre 2021Since being planted in 2005, Mourvèdre has evolved with maturing vines to the point it is now ready to go under the Isolation Ridge label in its own right. Lots of concentration to taste but with a glossy wash of acidity under the tart red cherry, game meat, dried herbs and white pepper characters. Eric Bordelet approaches Cider-making with the same intensity as a passionate oenologist brings to winemaking. Produced from pear trees estimated to be about 300 years old. Poiré Granit has 25-80 grams of sugar per liter, yet it doesn't taste particularly sweet. This is due to the tannin and acidity, which Bordelet says is twice as high as the apple! Stunning as aperitif or with cheese or desserts. With just 4% alc/vol this can be enjoyed any time. From Gippsland and, by the label, Issan Vineyard, a site winemaker Shashi Singh is into for its high density planting and organic farming. Avani is one of those very important Victorian wineries, from where I sit, making beautiful wines (by beautiful people). Always a treat to revisit. Avani is based in Mornington Peninsula, of course.
This is a cool and restrained pinot noir, lithe and shapely, fine boned, a web of lacy, silty tannin lends structure and the wine sits comfortable in its dark cherry, black olive, faintly game meat-meets-rosemary savouriness with a little sweet. smoky earth character in the mix for good measure. Understated and elegant but with plenty going on. A little spread in texture gives the wine a moreish feel. It feels fancy too, in that distinct way that great wines of the world hold themselves. For his pinot gris Eric aims for a classic Alsace styling. This is achieved through thought the use of barrel fermentation in older, large format French oak. Here he is not aiming to add oak flavours or aromas but seeks out the textual elements through micro-oxygenation from time in barrel and some light lees contact. This is a wonderfully textured wine with spicy fruit and lilting aromatics that packs in the flavour and drives with wonderful energy and freshness. In 2022 the grapes are sourced from the Mahonia property and the recently purchased Torres Bros Vineyard.
