There is very good color to the exuberantly floral-suffused nose, in particular violet, that is comprised mostly by notes of black cherry and earth that are trimmed in discreet wood influence. There is excellent density and vibrancy to the bigger bodied flavors that exude a subtle minerality on the dusty and bitter chocolate-inflected finish. Domaine de Bellene Nuits St Georges Chaignots 1er 2020Step up again here. While Chaignots is in Nuits St Georges, it hugs the boundary of Vosne Romanee and so much of this wine presents the best of both those communes. Turned earth, background wood and red into blue fruits vie frame a lovely opening aromatic. The palate is rich and supple but there's also a lively vein running through it making stand up across the palate - suppleness and energy a great combination. Lingering fine, silty tannins draw a boundary around the red fruit and wood spice. It's full of life this wine. Great drinking but also there's loads of background structure tucked in behind the fruit to make it an excellent cellaring proposition. Vilmart Coeur de Cuvee 201580% Chardonnay, 20% Pinot Noir from vines averaging 60 years old, the wine spends nearly 6 years on lees. Most importantly only the heart of the pressing is taken - 1400 litres instead of the usual 2100 litres, hence the name 'coeur de cuvee.'
The 2015 Brut Coeur de Cuvée is a pretty dense wine that belies its deceptively mid-weight structure. What surprises me most about the 2015 is how closed it is. In most years, especially warm years, Coeur de Cuvée is quite a bit more open and voluptuous, but the 2015 does not come across like that at all. Rather, it is super-classic in bearing, with tons of gravitas from the 60-year-old vines just waiting to emerge. There are none of the awkward herbal notes that penalize so many wines. Bright saline notes extend the finish effortlessly. The 2015 is a brilliant Coeur de Cuvée. ANTONIO GALLONI

The 2021 Gevrey-Chambertin Champeaux 1er Cru stands out in this range, with its striking bouquet redolent of deep spice and floral notes. Macerated cherry, spice, freshly cut flowers and licorice all take shape, lifted by bright acids that confer notable energy. A few years in bottle will help this come together a bit more fully. Introduced in 2015, Busso’s Gallina Viti Vecchie is drawn from a small parcel of 1953 vines planted in the heart of the Gallina cru. The soil in this part of the vineyard is rich in calcareous clay (bluish-grey marl), but there is also some sand. Piero Busso describes this wine has having more depth, structure and enveloping fruit than the younger-vine cuvée. Clos Joliette J de Joliette NVRegarded as one of the premier producers in Jurançon, Clos Joliette was founded in 1929, when the Migne family cleared forest in a natural southeast-facing amphitheater to plant a hectare of vines.
The result has been an incredible selection of complex and aromatic off-dry wines, reflecting the reputation Antoine Gerbelle bestowed on the domaine as “the Romanee Conti of the South-West France”.What makes these wines so sought after is the combination of three unique aspects. First, its location. With only 1.85 hectares Clos Joliette sits at 300m altitude, on the slopes of the hill of Beauvallon (Commune of Jurancon). The vines were planted in 1929 by Madame Migné and exposed to the East and South-East in a natural amphitheater, allowing the grapes to capture the gentle morning sun, rather than afternoon heat.
Second, an atypical terroir made of clay-silica, pudding stones, Ponto-Pliocene pebbles and crossed through by a vein of iron.
Third, the wine itself - a single varietal 100% Petit Manseng, treated with minimal intervention throughout vinification, no fining or filtration, and long aging in oak barrels for 4 to 6 years.

Ceretto Barbaresco Bernadot 2021Here's the star wine in this flight from Ceretto. The 2021 Barbaresco Bernadot is a beautiful expression with great balance and pretty aromas of bright berry, cherry-cranberry, pressed flower, balsamic aged vinegar, dark fruit and rye biscuit or something with dark grains. The wine shows great acidity and good intensity with a long finish, and it remains sprightly overall, carrying its medium fruit weight with grace. (95) MONICA LARNER
