  1. Lalu Langhe Barbera d'Alba 2022
    Lalu Langhe Barbera d'Alba 2022

Organic. Lalù’s Barbera just gets better. The new release is the first to include fruit from the new estate vineyard of Bricco Giubellini in Monforte. The vines here lie on Diano sandstone at a lofty 530 metres, an altitude that brings welcome freshness to warmer Piemonte vintages such as 2022 and 2023. The balance of the Barbera is drawn from fruit purchased from Monforte’s San Sebastiano—another site Lara Rocchetti and Luisa Sala believe exceptional for this variety.

Made with a mix of whole berries and bunches, the wine fermented and matured for eight months entirely in concrete. It’s a more powerful, sensual release than last year, still perfumed and vibrant yet more textural. The wine slinks out of the glass with pure red berries, violets and brown spices before turning towards more earthy shades of liquorice and woody herbs. The palate has joyous purity as well as a lovely mouthwatering quality from both the powdery tannins and the variety’s bright acidity while also hinting at Lalù’s light touch in the cellar. A first-class artisanal Barbera here.

  3. Gianfranco Alessandria Barbera d'Alba Vittoria 2019
Gianfranco Alessandria Barbera d'Alba Vittoria 2019
Showing more oak rendering and depth, the 2019 Barbera d'Alba Vittoria (with 4,500 bottles made) exhibits a much bigger and broader style compared to the estate's steel-aged Barbera. This wine sees 18 months in barrique, with about one-third new oak. The aging process serves to flesh out the dark fruit, dark cherry and plum. It creates a wine of bigger structure too, opening it up to more food-pairing possibilities, from meat lasagna to grilled steak. MONICA LARNER

    STAFF PICKS 2024 - MATT O'CONNOR

This is such a lovely early drinking nebbiolo for those of us who can't wait 10 years to wait for our Barolo to mature gracefully! This wine has lovely floral aromas backed up by dark cherry, ripe wild raspberry and just a hint of herbs - think sage, fennel and some savoury oregano.  Want a preview of Rinaldi Barolo? Drink this .... it even comes from grapes grown in the Barolo area - so great quality fruit, with layers of aromas, flavours and gentle tannins - drink up! MATT

The transformation that has taken place at Francesco Rinaldi over the last few years is truly remarkable. Today's wines are cut with beautiful precision and show exceptional harmony. ANTONIO GALLONI

Juicy and delicious, the 2022 Langhe Nebbiolo from Francesco Rinaldi & Figli doles out flavors of ripe raspberry, crushed strawberry, cake spice and mint. Polished, refined tannins and tangy acidity provide support. Enjoy soon to capture all the succulent fruit. Drink through 2026. KERIN O'KEEFE

  5. Cigliano di Sopra Chianti Classico 2021
Cigliano di Sopra Chianti Classico 2021
I love the Cigliano di Sopra 2021 Chianti Classico. This fabulous wine comes from an exciting estate that I absolutely recommend you seek out. Made with organic Sangiovese, it offers a punchy and bright fruit profile with cassis, red berry and blue flower that pop from the glass. The wine offers balance, freshness and an elegantly streamlined style. It feels transparent, almost fragile. Fruit is selected from across a seven-hectare site, and within that space, three hectares were planted in the 1970s and 1980s. The rest were planted more recently from 2004 on. With exactly 11,586 bottles made, this is a thrilling discovery. (94) MONICA LARNER

I feel like a new benchmark for fine wine is being set by Maddalena Fucile and Matteo Vaccari of Cigliano di Sopra in San Casciano Val di Pesa. These young winemaking colleagues studied enology together in Florence and both worked with Sashi Moorman and Rajat Parr at Domaine de la Côte in California and at other prestigious wine estates in Italy. Winemaking is hands-on and artisanal in the stone underground cellar of Maddalena's family Tuscan villa. Farming is organic and biodynamic, and I want to underline the sheer excitement I feel for these wines and this promising up-and-coming estate.

  9. Piero Busso Barbera d'Alba Stefanetto 2019
Piero Busso Barbera d'Alba Stefanetto 2019

Stefanetto comes from mature vines in Busso’s San Stunet vineyard (see notes for the Barbaresco San Stunet below). The higher altitude (380m above sea level), age of vines (25 to 50 years old) and limestone rich soils all contribute to a deeper and more structured Barbera than the Majano. Accordingly, this wine is raised in neutral barrels of various sizes for at least 12 months. It is also released with one extra year of age.

This has more overt flesh, more plummy fruit, wilder notes and powdery tannins. In short, it’s a dark and layered Barbera of enormous character and length.

  10. Lalu Langhe Nebbiolo 2021
    Lalu Langhe Nebbiolo 2021

Organic. This vibrant, perfumed Nebbiolo equally blends two sites that were both planted by Lalù. The first site, Roncaglie in La Morra, is a plot of land that Lara Rocchetti and Luisa Sala bought in 2015 and planted in 2017. Looking towards Verduno, this parcel faces east at an altitude of 400 metres. It’s a cool, windy, slow-ripening site. The second source is Bussia Bovi, a sub-Cru within Monforte’s superstar Bussia MGA. Lalù’s parcel is located at 320 metres above sea level, in the south of Bussia, between Bricco San Pietro and the area historically known as Bussia Arnulfo. The soils here are rich in sand, gifting a perfumed wine with supple fruit and great delicacy—the yin to Roncaglie’s yang. The fruit from here fermented as whole bunches and was raised in concrete to retain as much fragrance as possible. Both vineyards could be classified as Barolo (when the vines are of age), which says a great deal about the quality on offer here.

This Langhe Nebbiolo delivers more than most. The 2021 is a juicy, pretty Nebbiolo brimming with vibrant red and dark cherry fruit, anise, florals and some wood spice. In the mouth, the typical austerity of young Langhe is traded for svelte, integrated tannins and supple texture, all supported by mouth-watering energy.

Blueberry, raspberry and oak-driven spice aromas come to the forefront on the deeply colored, fragrant 2022 Barbera d’Alba from Sandrone. Dirupi Valtellina Superiore 2019
The Dirupi 2019 Valtellina Superiore is generous and balanced, with a 360-degree approach to the palate underlined by dark fruit, plum jam, bluebells and other mountain wildflowers. You smell alpine slopes, cool weather and glacier-like aromas. The palate shows some dried herb and lightly powdery tannins. Fruit comes from a two-hectare site that is divided into nine parcels with mostly sandy soils. Production is 9,915 bottles. MONICA LARNER, The Wine Advocate

The 2019 Valtellina Superiore is super-expressive right out of the gate. Spice, cedar, leather and tobacco meld into a core of bright red Nebbiolo fruit, with dusty tannins that wrap it all together. I suppose there could be a bit more finesse here (especially in the tannins) but all things considered, this is nicely done. ANTONIO GALLONI

Red fruit, baking spice, mint, tobacco. It's medium-bodied, bright and fresh, strawberry and spice, with a particularly pleasing 'mineral' character, and plenty of energy with that, tannin is fine and dusty/peppery. and the finish is fresh and quite long, and distinctly spicy. It's a wine of clarity and poise. In short, I really like it. GARY WALSH

A fragrant nose of red berries, spiced cherries, dried herbs, lavender and mild spices. Medium body with fine tannins and crisp acidity. Fresh and precise with balance and character. It's well-rounded with volume on the mid-palate. Silky texture and a precise, flavorful finish with excellent length JAMES SUCKLING

  17. Querciabella Turpino 2017
    Querciabella Turpino 2017

The 2017 Turpino is quite reticent, which is surprising given the style and personality of the year. Black cherry, pine, menthol, licorice and chocolate develop nicely over time. Readers should give the 2017 at least a few years in bottle, as it is not at all ready to drink now. The 2017 embodies the house style at Querciabella these days nicely. The wine is rich and deep, but not at all overdone. (95) ANTONIO GALLONI

40% Cabernet Franc, 40% Syrah, 20% Merlot grown in a north-facing vineyard in Grossetto in the Maremma. Biodynamically certified. Aged for 16 months in fine- and extra-fine-grained French oak barriques, of which up to 20% were new.
Lustrous deep crimson. Deep red- and dark-fruit nose with hints of dark spice. Savoury rather than sweet or ripe on the nose... Hint of earth and dried moss. Lush red and dark fruit with a muscular structure that is completely integrated with the fruit. Hedonistic, long, and with loads of appeal. Great fun to drink. (17+) WALTER SPELLER MW

The 2020 Barolo is a gorgeous, classy wine. Crushed rose petal, red berry fruit, spice, mint and orange peel are all beautifully lifted in this gracious, mid-weight Barolo. Bright Monforte acids lend notable energy and freshness. This elegant, delicate Barolo is superb. The 2020 spent two years in wood, mostly barrique and about 10% in cask. What a joy. ANTONIO GALLONI, Vinous.com

Rich and warmed aromas of ripe red fruits abundant in spice, featuring a pronounced licorice presence that melds with the warm, inviting notes of oak. On the palate, the wine is firm, with chewy tannins, contributing to its structured and robust character that keeps the rounded and plush fruit at bay as more savory elements develop as the wine evolves. Drink 2026 - 2040. WINE ENTHUSIAST

  28. Cavallotto Barbera d'Alba Vigna Cuculo 2021
Cavallotto Barbera d'Alba Vigna Cuculo 2021

Cavallotto’s Vigna del Cuculo is a major-league Barbera from a parcel of 50-plus-year-old vines on the western side of Bricco Boschis. This parcel is named after the cuckoo bird (cuculo)—we’re not sure why, and neither is Alfio Cavallotto! This wine's unique power and ridiculous quality can be attributed to the mature vines, low yields and powerful terroir of the Bricco Boschis. The western aspect and the preponderance of limestone temper Barbera’s natural acidity, and Alfio Cavallotto explains that this ‘Barolo’ terroir contributes to an aromatic range in Barbera that is closer to Nebbiolo.

The winemaking is also distinctive, with up to 18 days on skins (a long time for Barbera) and then aging for 20 months in the same mature Slavonian casks as the Nebbiolo wines. 2021 is a wonderfully fleshy and perfumed year for this benchmark wine. It’s got that core of pure, sweet, plummy fruit so particular to this Barbera, here infused with nuances of anise, dried flower and earthy minerals. The tannins are supple and elegant, the acidity ripe yet racy, and the wine finishes with unusual depth, finesse and complexity for the variety. Equally deep, complex and textural—not all Barbera is created equal.

Sandrone’s Valmaggiore is always one of the best young Nebbiolos out there and the 2022 doesn’t disappoint. It offers intense aromas of ripe forest berry, dark spice and blue flower that on the palate transform into juicy red cherry, crushed raspberry, licorice and ground clove. Polished tannins lend structure and finesse. Drink through 2027. KERIN O'KEEFE

  42. Rizzi Barbaresco Nervo Fondetta 2017
    Rizzi Barbaresco Nervo Fondetta 2017
Rose, violet and perfumed berry aromas lead the nose followed by whiffs of camphor and culinary spice. Full bodied, supremely elegant and surprisingly fresh for the hot vintage, the savory palate delivers ripe Marasca cherry, crushed raspberry, licorice and crushed mint alongside taut, refined tannins. Fresh acidity keeps it impeccably balanced. Drink 2022–2032. (95) KERRIN O'KEEFE, www.wineentusiast.com

The south-facing Nervo vineyard is located at an altitude of over 300 metres, which may account for its elegance. Ernesto Dellapiana and his son Enrico produce wines with a light touch, and their Nervo is aged in concrete tanks as well as casks. The red-fruit nose is intense and pure, and the attack supple and silky. There's a taut structure here, and fine acidity that keeps it lively and peppery. This wine is marked by energy, stylishness, and persistence. STEPHEN BROOK, Decanter

  43. Arpepe Inferno Fiamme Antiche Valtellina Superiore 2019
Arpepe Inferno Fiamme Antiche Valtellina Superiore 2019

    Sth facing, 450m altitude, granite
This cru captures the first and last rays from the sun, hence the name 'inferno.' Heady notes of dried rose petals, dark chocolate and mountain herbs lure you in. The palate unfolds with layers of florals, spiced red cherries and mulch, held together by an architecture of tannins and energy. While its immediacy is undeniable and incredibly tempting this offers great aging potential. GABRIELLE POY

Poached strawberry and cherry, aniseed/liquorice root. Juicy liquorice-laced pumice stone and volcanic dusty tannin is terrific, and it's so spicy and long to close. What a specific and terroir driven wine this is. Unlike anything else. Tannins really rip here. Unreal. Next level in 2019.  Succulence and DNA of Nebbiolo is so firm and wonderful. GARY WALSH

  44. Massolino Barbaresco DOCG 2021
    Massolino Barbaresco DOCG 2021
Bright cinnamon and earthy strawberry aromas with violets and dried cherries. Firm, with lifted acidity, dusty yet ripe tannins, a chewy mid-palate and ripe fruit on the finish. Approachable Barbaresco but will age nicely, too. Drink or hold. JAMES SUCKLING

The 2021 Barbaresco is a blend from parcels in Albesani, Serraboella and Starderi. Gracious and nuanced, the 2021 offers up hints of crushed flowers, orange peel, mint, sweet red berry fruit and spice. Readers will find a super-classic Barbaresco. Lifted aromatics, mid-weight structure and persistent yet fine tannins give the wine its shape. This is beautifully done. ANTONNIO GALLONI

  45. Le Cinciole Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Aluigi 2018
Le Cinciole Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Aluigi 2018
The 2018 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Aluigi Campo ai Peri is a terrific follow up to the stellar 2016. Rich, deep and explosive, the Aluigi saturates the palate with dark fruit, leather, tobacco, spice, menthol and espresso notes. This ample, full-bodied Panzano Gran Selezione hits all the right notes. The marriage of elegance and pure power is compelling. ANTONIO GALLONI

The 2018 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Aluigi is layered and beautiful, with red cherry, medicinal herbs, dried flowers, and tomato leaf. The palate is medium to full-boded and pure, with a wonderful core of concentration as well as freshness of acidity and long and driving energy through the finish. This is the second vintage for Le Cinciole in the category of Gran Selezione, having not produced any in 2017. Though it is impressive now, it is fully structured and will need a few more years to show its full potential and unfurl. Drink 2025-2040. JEB DUNNUCK

  48. Le Cinciole Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Aluigi 2019
Le Cinciole Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Aluigi 2019
An exquisite wine, Le Cinciole's 2019 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Aluigi Campo ai Peri is immediately seductive. More than anything else, I admire the purity and delineation here. Sweet pipe tobacco, cedar, mint, rose petal and dried herbs are finely cut in this chiseled, vibrant Gran Selezione. Le Cinciole sets the standard. What a gorgeous wine this is. The 2019 spent two years in 25hL cask and a year in cement. (96) ANTONIO GALLONI

Soaring aromatics of dried oily herbs, fresh roasted spices, wilting flowers, fresh rubbed erinmore  tobacco and a lively mix of mostly red fruits but dried meat comes subtly in to play. There's some lift to the nose which really highlights the fresher elements.
Snappy and bordering on tart. There's a river of mineral tension here. It's hugely invigorating and super long. It's a wild card. While Petresco needs to unleash its potential Alluigi needs to calm itself and fill out a little. In a five to ten year span this wine is going to blossom.
With further air something unfurls, no, uncoils, inner tension. A mid palate pull in of character. This is going to sound odd but it's something I associate with the best wines from a couple of communes in barolo or the best of Gevrey or Vosne. It's hard to explain, like a central pressure built around the various components that feel compressed but with an overt structural, tannic, mineral assertion. At no stage am I comparing this wine to any of the former, it's uniquely and undeniably Tuscan, just that "thing" when I see it in a wine, it excites the hell out of me. I would love to see this in a decade but no bottle would last a day in my house. ROSCOE
