Francesco Rinaldi Langhe Nebbiolo 2022STAFF PICKS 2024 - MATT O'CONNOR
This is such a lovely early drinking nebbiolo for those of us who can't wait 10 years to wait for our Barolo to mature gracefully! This wine has lovely floral aromas backed up by dark cherry, ripe wild raspberry and just a hint of herbs - think sage, fennel and some savoury oregano. Want a preview of Rinaldi Barolo? Drink this .... it even comes from grapes grown in the Barolo area - so great quality fruit, with layers of aromas, flavours and gentle tannins - drink up! MATT
The transformation that has taken place at Francesco Rinaldi over the last few years is truly remarkable. Today's wines are cut with beautiful precision and show exceptional harmony. ANTONIO GALLONI
Juicy and delicious, the 2022 Langhe Nebbiolo from Francesco Rinaldi & Figli doles out flavors of ripe raspberry, crushed strawberry, cake spice and mint. Polished, refined tannins and tangy acidity provide support. Enjoy soon to capture all the succulent fruit. Drink through 2026. KERIN O'KEEFE2022NebbioloItaly457$75.00 As low as $67.50 -

Dirupi Valtellina Superiore 2019The Dirupi 2019 Valtellina Superiore is generous and balanced, with a 360-degree approach to the palate underlined by dark fruit, plum jam, bluebells and other mountain wildflowers. You smell alpine slopes, cool weather and glacier-like aromas. The palate shows some dried herb and lightly powdery tannins. Fruit comes from a two-hectare site that is divided into nine parcels with mostly sandy soils. Production is 9,915 bottles. MONICA LARNER, The Wine Advocate
The 2019 Valtellina Superiore is super-expressive right out of the gate. Spice, cedar, leather and tobacco meld into a core of bright red Nebbiolo fruit, with dusty tannins that wrap it all together. I suppose there could be a bit more finesse here (especially in the tannins) but all things considered, this is nicely done. ANTONIO GALLONI2019NebbioloItaly498$85.00 As low as $76.50 -
Cavallotto Langhe Nebbiolo 2021Dark and earthy to open, new leather and walnuts, wafts of bergamot, spice and dried flowers. It’s full-bodied, deep in flavour, red and black fruits, kind of rustic, but in a pleasing way, not least in the tea and grainy tannin grip department. There’s a cinch of orange peel bitterness, with a long grated nutmeg and slightly rusty tannin finish. Really opens up after some air. Such character. A very serious Lange Neb! GARY WALSH, The Wine Front
The word benchmark gets bandied around a lot, but this is a Nebbiolo that justifies that term from an already hyped vintage. This year’s wine is drawn exclusively from declassified, mostly young-vine fruit from the great Castiglione Falletto Cru of Bricco Boschis. Cropped at yields below 40 hl/ha, the grapes are entirely destemmed, and fermentation is spontaneous. Malolactic conversion was in cement tanks during the spring following harvest. The wine was aged for 18 months in Slavonian oak botti and bottled unfiltered.2021NebbioloItaly457Special Price $85.00 Regular Price $100.00 -
Albino Rocca Barbaresco 2020The 2020 Barbaresco is lovely. A wine of charm, the 2020 shows how appealing the vintage is. Crushed ?owers, mint, spice, blood orange and mint are all nicely delineated. Rizzi Barbaresco DOCG 2020
Red fruit, baking spice, mint, tobacco. It's medium-bodied, bright and fresh, strawberry and spice, with a particularly pleasing 'mineral' character, and plenty of energy with that, tannin is fine and dusty/peppery. and the finish is fresh and quite long, and distinctly spicy. It's a wine of clarity and poise. In short, I really like it. GARY WALSH
A fragrant nose of red berries, spiced cherries, dried herbs, lavender and mild spices. Medium body with fine tannins and crisp acidity. Fresh and precise with balance and character. It's well-rounded with volume on the mid-palate. Silky texture and a precise, flavorful finish with excellent length JAMES SUCKLING
This has aromas of perfumed berry, camphor, exotic spice, pipe tobacco and new leather. The aromas give way to concentrated flavors of raspberry, wild strawberry, licorice and toasted almond alongside tightly woven tannins. KERIN O'KEEFE

Gianfranco Alessandria Barolo DOCG 2020
The 2020 Barolo is a gorgeous, classy wine. Crushed rose petal, red berry fruit, spice, mint and orange peel are all beautifully lifted in this gracious, mid-weight Barolo. Bright Monforte acids lend notable energy and freshness. This elegant, delicate Barolo is superb. The 2020 spent two years in wood, mostly barrique and about 10% in cask. What a joy. ANTONIO GALLONI, Vinous.com
Monforte d’Alba. Lustrous ruby. Rich strawberry fruit with a peppery tingle on the nose. Sappy red fruit with plenty of acidity and soft tannins. Very long and sweetly perfumed while the plentiful acidity makes the whole look leaner than it is. WALTER SPELLER, JancisRobinson.com
Rich and warmed aromas of ripe red fruits abundant in spice, featuring a pronounced licorice presence that melds with the warm, inviting notes of oak. On the palate, the wine is firm, with chewy tannins, contributing to its structured and robust character that keeps the rounded and plush fruit at bay as more savory elements develop as the wine evolves. Massolino Barolo DOCG 2020STAFF PICKS 2024 - FRANKE
Fairing from iron-rich soils of Serralunga, the Massolino family carves out a niche for themselves in Barolo as being wines you can age, but also enjoy young due to the modern-classic style. Large format Slovenian oak tempers the fine tannins and a youthful elegant red fruit of strawberries is backed up with crushed herbs and hints of star-anise. Delightful. FRANKE
The 2020 Barolo is a terrific wine in its peer group. It offers up scents of pine, cedar, sweet pipe tobacco and crushed herbs. Delicate and elegant, with gorgeous aromatics and tons of presence, the 2020 is impeccably done. This bottling has aged quite well in the past. I imagine that will also be true of the 2020. ANTONIO GALLONI

Arpepe Inferno Fiamme Antiche Valtellina Superiore 2019
Sth facing, 450m altitude, granite
This cru captures the first and last rays from the sun, hence the name 'inferno.' Heady notes of dried rose petals, dark chocolate and mountain herbs lure you in. The palate unfolds with layers of florals, spiced red cherries and mulch, held together by an architecture of tannins and energy. While its immediacy is undeniable and incredibly tempting this offers great aging potential. GABRIELLE POYPoached strawberry and cherry, aniseed/liquorice root. Juicy liquorice-laced pumice stone and volcanic dusty tannin is terrific, and it's so spicy and long to close. What a specific and terroir driven wine this is. Unlike anything else. Tannins really rip here. Unreal. Next level in 2019. Succulence and DNA of Nebbiolo is so firm and wonderful. GARY WALSH

The south-facing Nervo vineyard is located at an altitude of over 300 metres, which may account for its elegance. Ernesto Dellapiana and his son Enrico produce wines with a light touch, and their Nervo is aged in concrete tanks as well as casks. Rizzi Barbaresco Nervo DOCG 2020Out of all the brilliant Rizzi range of Barbaresco, I have a bit of a soft spot for the Nervo bottling. It doesn't carry the gravitas of their Pajore plot but I love the understatement in the wine with its lilting and delicate aromatics and fine, detailed palate. Pure, with a lovely austerity on the back end.
In 2020, it strikes me as just a touch more open so the red fruits and bruised strawberry jump up a little more than usual, and the dusting of spice, red petals, dried mint and cut hay aromatics are beautifully accessible. So much so, it's hard to draw yourself away to actually drink the thing. But, when you do the just-right-ripeness gives you fruit that ranges from raspberry to cranberry all draped in complexing brown spice. The structure is there but like all Nervos, it's fine and ever so long giving the balancing austerity of powdery tanins to the effusiveness of the fruit. I love it. MICHAEL MCNAMARA, PWS

There's a lightness and nervy spine to the core of maraschino cherries and licorice - a feature of the sandy soils perhaps. Sandro Fay Valtellina Riserva Superiore 'Carteria' 2019
Carteria is a single vineyard that sits at around 550 metres in the western part of the municipality of Teglio. At this higher level the vineyards sit in a cooler pocket and the vines produce fruit and grape juice that is tighter and nervier and showing more primary rock mineral character. Winemaking involves fermentation in stainless steel and aging for 12 months in 30hl and 500ltr old oak barrels and then a further aging in bottle of 24 months. Carteria has been made as a Riserva (min 3 years of aging) since 2013.
The wine is intensely concentrated with floral hints of rose and cool spice with a fruit profile that shows hints of darker fruits in addition to red. Tannins are finer and more elegant than you would expect from one of the warmer years on record. Overall, the wine is powerful, savoury and earthy with many years ahead of it to unfurl.
