Located in the commune of Radda, Piero and his sister, Benedetta, took over the estate from their father in the mid 1980’s and have extensively renovated the vineyards and, more recently, the old property at Bugialla in to a stunning agriturismo. The wines are typically full and rich yet retain beautiful elegance and perfumed fruit. They taste like Chianti should and they are always good, even in lesser years.
The attention to detail in the vineyard verges on fanatical, with biodynamic farming, careful clonal selection, close planted vines, nitrogenous cover crops, extensive canopy management and hand picking to ensure the best possible combination of concentration, acidity and ripe tannins. Wild yeast fermentation, modern winemaking techniques and French oak for maturation complete the process. The resulting wine reflects these labours and is a beautifully balanced and perfumed style of Chianti with floral notes, spice and ripe red cherry and berry fruit, the structured palate rounded by sweet persistent tannin.

Rocca di Montegrossi is located in the heart of Chianti Classico, about seven kilometres from Gaiole. The name comes from the historic fortress that was built during the Longobard period (600-800 AD) by Geremia, ancestor of the Ricasoli–Firidolfi family, and destroyed in 1530. Marco is part of the Ricasoli family that wrote the story of Chianti Classico, creating the formula for the wine we know today at the site of what is now his San Marcellino vineyard.
The estate covers 60 hectares, of which 18 are under vine and 20 with olives trees. The vineyards are situated on gently sloping hills that are calcareous origin, at between 300-450 metres and planting densities range from 3,300 vines per hectare in the old vineyards to 5200-6200 in the new. La Dama Vini Valpolicella Classico Superiore Ca Besi 2019A wine that originated from where the Valpolicella tadition of drying grapes and the freshness and fragrance of grapes pressed during harvest are combined. This gives birth to a wine of great concentration and elegance, where the freshness suprises when countered by the dark, sweet fruits and long persistent palate.
This skirts such a lovely middle-ground and the lighter, fresher style we see from La Dama is given a little oomph and lick of pizzaz that is hard not to love. Pepper and camphor on the nose with dark roasted ground spice and a Campari like citrus flourish. It belies what comes after which seems so pretty and energetic but matched with some lovey dark, broody fruit that swims around a concentrated but focused core. Cigliano di Sopra Chianti Classico 2021I love the Cigliano di Sopra 2021 Chianti Classico. This fabulous wine comes from an exciting estate that I absolutely recommend you seek out. Made with organic Sangiovese, it offers a punchy and bright fruit profile with cassis, red berry and blue flower that pop from the glass. The wine offers balance, freshness and an elegantly streamlined style. It feels transparent, almost fragile. Fruit is selected from across a seven-hectare site, and within that space, three hectares were planted in the 1970s and 1980s. The rest were planted more recently from 2004 on. I feel like a new benchmark for fine wine is being set by Maddalena Fucile and Matteo Vaccari of Cigliano di Sopra in San Casciano Val di Pesa. Winemaking is hands-on and artisanal in the stone underground cellar of Maddalena's family Tuscan villa. Farming is organic and biodynamic, and I want to underline the sheer excitement I feel for these wines and this promising up-and-coming estate.

Macerated dark cherry, licorice, leather, tobacco and smoke all flesh out over time. The 2020 saw a whopping 50 days on the skins, with malolactic fermentation in cement and then two years in 20-25hL Slavonian oak casks. The palate is medium to full-boded and pure, with a wonderful core of concentration as well as freshness of acidity and long and driving energy through the finish. This is the second vintage for Le Cinciole in the category of Gran Selezione, having not produced any in 2017.
