Palacios Remondo 'La Vendimia' Rioja Garnacha Tempranillo 2022An unfiltered, organic, 'generic' Rioja, blending the south and north shores of the Rio Ebro: Garnacha from Monte Yerga and Tempranillo from Haro. Álvaro's precise-yet-barely-tutored wines gently but unfailingly reflect the earth in which they grow, and this hallmark is seen in spades here. 4 months in barrique.
Smelling for all the world like an apple orchard in blossom (flowers, leaves and tree boughs), the Garnacha in this is really pretty, and marries beautifully to the grey-clay smell of the damp soils up under Mount Yerga out back of Alfaro. Crisper in tannin-line than unwooded Tempranillos such as LZ, and with a more pronounced, broader natural acidity, it's a very lively and linear Garnacha-based blend. Kee-runch! Both bright and earthily-fruited, this juicy little wine balances neat, modest tannins and soft red dirt acidity. Mid-weight at most, round and complete, gently spiced and perfumed, it's classy and delicious.

Y.amirault Amirault Bourgueil Cote 50 2022The old La Coudraye, which changed to La Côte back in the 2018 vintage to reflect the variety of origins for the fruit. This is a sample drawn before bottling. A vibrant hue in the glass, and a beautifully pure and eager nose of black cherry, blackcurrant and damson fruits. The palate remains true to the nose, with that same sense of purity and an underbelly of soft chalk, before a sappy cherry-skin character at the end. Modestly extracted tannins, firm but not over done, with nice acidity for this warmer vintage, this should evolve nicely for some years, but should be ready to go within a year or two. The 2022 Colección de Viñedos is a village red with 80% Tempranillo, 10% Garnacha and 10% Viura from four vineyards in Ábalos. It fermented in stainless steel with neutral yeasts. It feels a little like a carbonic-maceration red, but it fermented destemmed; it feels very young and primary, with a fruit-driven nose and a vinous palate, juicy and with very fine tannins and moderate acidity. 25,000 bottles produced. Laderas de Cabama is 100% Tempranillo, crafted from a single plot of 40-year-old vines in Ollauri. It grows on the classic clay/limestone soil of the Rioja Alta. This single-vineyard bottling used to be made in a similar style to Valenciso’s flagship Reserva, in that it was built to age in barrel and bottle before release. From the 2018 vintage, Valenciso has sought to craft Laderas de Cabama in a younger, more fruit-forward style. The fruit is picked a little earlier and the winemaking employs a portion of whole-berry, semi-carbonic fermentation, bringing a more primary, juicy profile.No new oak is used. Instead, fermentation occurs in cool concrete, followed by 14 months in used French oak barrels. The resulting wine is spicy and rich, with blackberry and plummy fruit, some spice and tobacco leaf notes from the whole-bunch fermentation. It boasts good depth and a tea-scented, full-bodied finish. Great on its own, this will also suit a wide variety of meat dishes.

Dicey Bannockburn Pinot Noir 2021James is the grower, Matt the caretaker and they are the Dicey brothers. They are also neighbours with all the fruit for Dicey is sourced from the family's vineyards in the Bannockburn sub region of Central Otago. All sustainable and all about showing place.
Nice perfumed aromatics with soft violet, ripe dark cherries, anise and dark plum all interspersed with spicy cedar and delicate woodlands notes. That Otago rich dark cherry is on show but this doesn't feel too big or bulky like some others can. A touch of anise, that same dark plum all pile in there giving this plenty of push and depth. Its supple and soft with a lovely flow that carries the palate to a long finish that seems to unfold dark fruits, savoury spice, cedar and foresty notes layer by layer.

Boysenberry, dusty spice, floral aromatics, tobacco, leaf and mint. Medium-bodied, powdery tannin, very ‘mineral’ acidity, bright but sitting in the wine well, raspberry and plum, complex and chalky firm on a long finish, a little seaweed in the mix. Crisp. Trinity Hill's 2018 The Gimblett is a 50-50 blend of Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, aged in 100% new French oak for 21 months. The floral overtones of the Franc really show up on the nose, while the palate is more about cassis and a streamlined, concentrated, linear presentation. Medium to full-bodied, it adds softly dusty tannins on the finish, along with hints of mocha and vanilla. Approachable now, it should still be going strong in a decade's time. Pavillon de Chavannes Cote de Brouilly Ambassades 2022The history of Pavillon de Chavannes is deeply intertwined with that of Château Thivin, another esteemed estate in Côte de Brouilly. In 1861, the Jambon-Chanrion family acquired the estate. The pivotal moment came after World War I, when Yvonne Chanrion married Claude Geoffray, heir to Château Thivin. Yvonne brought with her one-third of her family’s prized vineyards and later acquired another third from her sister. While Yvonne and Claude expanded Thivin’s holdings together, they never had children. Upon Yvonne’s passing in 1987, her family’s original vineyard inheritance returned to Paul Jambon of the Jambon-Chanrion family, along with half of the additional lands she and Claude had purchased. Antidoto Tempranillo 2020Lots of thyme-like herbs and spices on top of the dark plums, dried strawberries and cherries. Antidoto is barely made – given the lightest, cool, simple and short fermentation in concrete vat (fermentation finishes off skins once a certain density is realised). Maturation is gentle and matter-of-fact, in clean old 600 litre barrels for 10 months. 70% of the fruit is from very old vines (there is no white fruit in this blend), and stems are excluded. Bertrand is trying to render old vine character as deftly as possible, in particular to avoid over-extraction and excess concentration: “avoiding the tannin avalanche”. There's a crispness to the wine, bright and lively, the herbaceous notes leading the way but not totally defining the wine. Fine, light tannins hold court. Daniel Bouland Morgon Corcelette 2022The "regular" bottling of 2022 Corcelette from Monsieur Bouland is another lovely example of this very strong vintage. It is deep, bright and sappy, offering up a nose of red and black cherries, sweet cranberries, vinesmoke, gamebird, a dollop of fresh thyme and a very pretty base of soil tones. On the palate the wine is vibrant, full-bodied and deep at the core, with a fine foundation of soil, bright acids, moderate tannins and great focus and grip on the long, complex and beautifully balanced finish. Of all of Daniel's outstanding 2022s, this is certainly the first cuvée I would be reaching for to drink now, as it has a sense of wide open generosity that is not evident with most of his other, more structured wines from this vintage. This is not to say that it will not also age long and gracefully, but the regular Corcelette is not going to demand cellaring time before it gives up the goods. 2024-2060. Gregoire Hoppenot Fleurie Les Moriers 2021Hoppenot farms almost three-hectares of this imposing east-facing terroir overlooking the famous windmill of Moulin-a-Vent. Les Moriers shares a border with Poncié, Les Roches and Les Garants and the vines at the top of the vineyard lie a stone’s throw from the winery.
Vine age varies from 35 to 90 years. Rising from 260 metres on the Moulin-a-Vent border to 340 metres at the top of the slope, this steep hillside contains two mineral rich soil types: the vines at the top of the slope are on very poor soils of shallow granitic sand; then it becomes heavier in the Bas de Moriers with increasing clay concentration over the granite bedrock. Prieure Lichine 2018 375ml
The 2018 Prieuré-Lichine is gorgeous. Bright and racy in the glass, the 2018 impresses with its magnificent purity of fruit. In 2018, Prieuré-Lichine has terrific energy and cut. It is perhaps a bit less creamy than the 2016, but also impeccable in its balance. Part of that is driven by the higher percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend in 2018. Rose petal, lavender, mint and spice add nuance to a core of red/purplish fruit. Tasted two times. (95) ANTONIO GALLONI
The 2018 Château Prieuré-Lichine is an attractive, elegant Margaux offering classic, pretty red and black fruits, cedary spice, and dried flowers aromas and flavors. Medium to full-bodied, elegant, and again, with an incredible floral character, it has a supple, rounded texture that's going to allow it to drink nicely in its youth, yet it should also evolve for 15+ years or more.
