Powell and Son Kraehe Shiraz 2017From 110-year-old vineyards, this is classic premium Barossa Shiraz. It's open and expressive right from the first sniff. The nose is rich and heady, billowing cherry, chocolate, plum and licorice with a savory, earthy spine of bay leaf, mint and smoke. The tannins are granular and fine, framed by tangy, intense fruit and a stony mineral streak. Plush but linear and lifted, it should live on for decades. Drink through 2045. Penfolds Grange 1994Dense red-purple; the typically rich and powerful bouquet has layers of dark berry fruit and integrated and balanced oak. What makes it unusual is the distinct hint of chocolate, which appears again on the silkily powerful palate. Here there is an array of all of the fruit flavours one could possibly expect, but once again that touch of dark Swiss chocolate adding an intriguing note. The oak balance and integration is better than any five-year-old Grange I can remember, the tannins perfectly balanced into the bargain. The 2022 Riesling Scharzhofberger Auslese is still closed on the nose. It takes a lot of swirling to awaken passionfruit and citrus hints. The palate is rich and concentrated with grapefruit-edged peach preserve, almost peppery with its grapefruit spice. Intense yet balanced, fresh, and harmonious. Citrus savor, tart and aromatic, highlights the essential and inherent finesse. Nothing is too much, yet there is baffling intensity. Beautiful. Grapefruit and peach flavors shine on the long finish. … a noble-sweet wine made from botrytized fruit. It offers a superbly refreshing yet delicately aromatic nose of minty herbs, candied grapefruit, pineapple, passionfruit, and licorice. The wine is impressive and rich on the fully noble-sweet and intense palate. The feeling of acidity is on the lower side, making this come over as comparatively broad and powerful. The 2021er Scharzhofberger Kabinett Alte Reben (an auction lot) is a barely fruity-styled wine which proves still quite restrained at first but already hints at stunningly pure and fresh notes of white flowers, minty herbs, lavender, gooseberry, white pepper, and smoke. The wine proves very intense yet airy and superbly pure and zesty. The finish is almost dry-tasting and hugely long and vibrating. What a classic Scharzhofberger! MOSEL REPORT
Ripe white peach and Amalfi lemon are the primary fruit aromas of this remarkable riesling Kabinett. The super-straight palate has a staggering intensity of crushed rock minerality. Pristine and luminescent at the very long finish. Limited production. STUART PIGOTT
