This is a very good release. Cherry, fresh strawberry, almost a liquorice root perfume, flowering herbs. It runs tighter on the palate, with some pink grapefruit in with pale red fruits, a saline character, fine dusty peppery texture, with a finish that offers crunch and perfume, and good length. Made with Cinsault, syrah, grenache, carignan and a touch of vermentino from clay-limestone scree soil, pebbly. Gravity fed wherever possible for the cleanest finest juice. A bouquet that's finely spiced with citrus notes, slightly lemony, and flroal accents. The palate is taut, white fruits, citrus, hint of fennel … a rosé for every occasion and any meal!

This wine sits in a range the Blancks call "Les Classiques". These are easy, accessible wines made from the traditional Alsatian grape varieties. They are fruit-driven, aromatic, dry wines that give the best of themselves within the first five to seven years, if you wish to retain their primary fruit-driven personality. The screw cap closure enhances this profile and helps the wines keep both freshness and liveliness far longer. They generally come from light soils with sand and gravel as well as sandstone or clay.

Fruit for the Blanck Pinot Gris was sourced from gravel, sand and south-facing clay and limestone vineyards. It was gently whole-bunch pressed before spontaneous alcoholic fermentation in stainless steel.

Preserved lemon flavours are held in check by the limestone minerality and the palate is given volume and texture by the usual lees contact over winter. A lovely mouthful of wine that finishes long and dry and beautifully balanced. Unmistakably fine Alsace Riesling. VINTAGE & VINE

The fruit comes from vineyards with sand and gravel soils around the village of Kientzheim.
The juice is extracted with infinite care in an air-bag press. The slow, gentle pressing avoids crushing the stalks and pips. The must starts fermenting of its own accord thanks to the natural yeast present in the juice, and the fermentation generally lasts from four to 10 weeks. It is carried out in stainless-steel vats equipped with temperature control, a medium which maximises the expression of this variety's aromas.

This is 100% merlot from a 1.5 hectare vineyard located in Montravel, a sub-region of Bergerac.
The grapes are hand harvested in small lug boxes, in the cellar the bunches are destemmed and the fruits selected one by one by hand. The must is then macerated in micro oxygenated tanks, pump over every six hours, alcoholic and malolactic fermentations done in temperature controlled tanks. Aged for fourteen months on fine lees in 1/3 new and 2/3 one year old oak barrels.

This is terrific Merlot - there is even greater vibrancy and verve to the 2017 then the 2016. the fruit is pure and ripe with fresh picked plum and red cherry fruit. Some classy oak wraps gently around some pretty and lifted violet notes. and red fruits. This has plenty of fleshy fruit but in a compact and vibrant frame. There aint much merlo like this in Aus. PWS

Marcel Deiss Riesling comes from two different vineyards on the estate. One has soil with a filtering limestone surface and the other has sandy soil that is barely fertile and very dry. They practice organic and biodynamic agriculture (Ecocert and Demeter Certificate). The harvest is carried out manually and early to maintain good levels of acidity.

This south / south-easterly facing slope in Wintzenheim is composed of calcareous clay. This heavy soil is giving a strong character to the wines.

Stunning citrus fruit, generous body and excellent concentration with a vibrant acidity makes this a very expressive and appealing dry riesling, that does all the things people expect from Sancerre which it doesn't always deliver. Long invigorating finish STUART PIGOTT, jamessuckling.com

Vivacious and uber refreshing, this positively hums with a primal energy and delivers it all with an emphatic snap of rocky mineral tension that clings to the medium bodied, pithy, zesty fruit that struts across your mouth like it has somewhere important to be. I love its vim and vigour, at no point is your palate not fully engaged and enlivened. It carries all this character with seeming ease as it slowly unwinds at the back.
The next day there was a distinct florality and a potent lemon oil note that really got me excited. Also the more textural, phenolic, extract components were a little more positively influential. This speaks volumes for the wines ability to age and evolve gracefully in the bottle, but it's a thrill to drink now. Gorgeous. ROSCOE

The 2021 Sylvaner Rosenberg is made from old vines, planted in 1969/1970, so just over 50 years old. The nose has a faint hint of melted butter and hazelnut. The small harvest meant that it needed to go into used barrique, because there was not enough to fill a foudre. The result is very creamy and smooth, on a slender body, with much lemon freshness. I was happy to know that my palate was still working after an extremely long day of tasting when I told Pierre that in this vintage of Frédéric Emile I found more of the Geisberg than the Osterberg (in most vintages, the wine is a blend of 60/40 Osterberg-Geisberg, at times even 70/30, but this year it's more like 55/45). The 2020 Riesling Clos Saint Landelin is already open and shows exquisitely ripe tart apple notes. A gorgeous aromatic overtone of apple and yarrow carries over to the palate, where a super-smooth, concentrated palate projects generosity without any fatness. STAFF PICKS 2022 - ROSCOE HALLIGAN-ROSE


What a wine. It was a bit of an all-out brawl this year to see who would take out the big gong. I nabbed a couple of contenders on a recent weekend to examine them properly in the right kind of environment, under a tree in my yard with some mates and some nibbles. At the end There Can Be Only One and that had to be the Freddy Emile 2016. It's like they bottled The Quickening.
The power here is genuinely staggering. It's so compact and tense that it isn't entirely comfortable to taste at this early stage. Even with a few years under the belt it is almost completely primary with little or no indication of age showing amongst that youthfully imploded and inwardly focused fruit. Scintillating stuff. It practically hums with pent up potential. The length is unreal and it stains the palate with wildly mineral fruit. The palate is hugely impactful and it hits like a sock stuffed with pool balls being swung around. It is  a genuine WOW wine but it comes with a caveat, do not drink them too early. There is so much here just waiting to unveil itself. This is probably the best young version of this storied wine I have ever drunk. ROSCOE

The 2021 Riesling Cuvée Ste. Catherine is from 60-70-year old vines on the midslope of the Schlossberg Grand Cru. This took a whole year to ferment and stopped at around 5g/L of residual sweetness. It's richer than usual for the domaine, but with the acidity of 2021, this actually sits well. The most subtle hint of orange blossom is all the nose wants to reveal. More temperature reveals an overtone of pineapple juice. A tiny flicker of smoky reduction appears, too. The palate is bold, clean-cut, serene and scented. This is the crystalline nature of granite making itself known. The pithy texture makes the mouth water even more. The aroma and the texture of freshly zested Amalfi lemon are on the long finish. This has body but no fat - a gorgeous synthesis of freshness and citrus, long and elegant. Real drive and much energy. (Bone-dry) 96/100 ANNE KREDIEHL Vinous

Still extremely youthful on the nose, which is not something you expect from such a warm and dry vintage, but that is typical for the greatest 2022 wines. This astonishing dry riesling starts off very minerally, but that doesn’t prepare you for the way its stony profundity expands and expands as its climbs into the sky like a rocket ascending. The 2022 Ausone, which was the earliest-picked ever on September 5 (although that is later than Cheval Blanc) has another very intense bouquet with layers of plush blackberry, blueberry, crushed violet and incense aromas that are beautifully entwined with the 100% new oak. Hints of blood orange emerge with a few minutes in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with silky tannins and perfectly pitched acidity. The slightly higher proportion of Cabernet Franc imparts a touch more pepperiness toward the finish. You can feel this on your tongue long after it has departed. There is a surfeit of freshness on the finish. This is an outstanding Ausone that can look forward to a very long future. (98) NEAL MARTIN, Vinous.com

The 2020 Ausone is stellar. Usually a showier wine, Ausone is packed with bright acids, deep fruit and tons of supporting structure. Dark red fruit, blood orange, pomegranate, rose petal, mocha and dried herbs all race out of the glass. Deep and layered, with magnificent finesse, Ausone is lights out in 2020. What a wine. The 2018 Ausone is mind-blowing. The aromatics alone are mesmerizing. I don't know what more to say. Cabernet Franc is so expressive, so vibrant so nuanced. Rose petal, cinnamon, star anise and sage meld into a core of red fleshed fruit. The 2018 doesn't impress with opulence or richness, rather it is a Saint-Émilion that is all about persistence and energy. I won't be at all surprised if it merits a higher score in the future. Readers who can find it should not hesitate. The 2018 is a viscerally thrilling wine of the highest level.

This is really exotic with wild-fruit character that I have seldom encountered in Ausone. Full-bodied yet reserved and very tight. Amazing depth and purity of fruit. Incredible beauty. Sexy.

The 2022 Le Pin is a very pretty, sexy wine. The richness of the year is evident in the wine's super-ripe profile and textural feel. Blackberry jam, spice, apricot, black tea, new leather, chocolate and a kiss of French oak build in a sumptuous, potent Pomerol. The 2022 will need time to be at its best. To be sure, extreme heat and drought do not present the most optimal conditions for an early-ripening variety such as Merlot, especially on gravel. The elegance and harmony of the 2022 Le Pin took me aback. Harvest began at this small estate on September 6th, proceeding bit by bit until all 10 blocks were picked, and the resulting wine is maturing in 65% new oak. Wafting from the glass with aromas of minty blackberries and cassis mingled with hints of licorice, spices and rose petals, it's medium to full-bodied, bright and fleshy, with a sensual, seamless profile and terrific integration at such an early stage.
