Marsilea Premier Bobal 2018A family-owned winery and cellar; 60 hectares of vineyards around the small village of Sinarcas, on an 800-metre high plateau inland from Valencia and close to the border with Castilla-La Mancha, surrounded by a pine forest. Sebastian Mancebo makes terrific organic wines mostly from native Bobal, alongside alternatives like Gewürztraminer.
Vines are typically more than 40 years old and planted at altitudes of 900 meters. The grapes are hand-sorted before the fermentation and the partially crushed grapes are then subjected to low temperature for the extraction of primary, fruit aromas. The fermentation is done at low temperatures (18ºC) in temperature with no oak.
A brilliant cherry-red colour, of medium intensity and purplish highlights. It has a bouquet of wild flowers and a salty minerality, typical of the regions' soils. Forceful yet velvety on the palate. Fruity with notes of blackberries, it hides a slight bitterness that balances the fruit, with a persistent and long finish. PWS

Stift Gottweig Gruner Veltliner Messwein 2023Stift Goettweig Messwein Grüner Veltliner comes from an estate that has been engaged in wine-growing in the Kremstal region since the 11th century – though it can be said to be in the form of its life, with 2020 Winemaker of the Year Fritz Miesbauer doing a great job at the helm.
The Göttweiger Messwein, or altar wine, has been an institution in this Benedictine monastery for centuries. Grüner Veltliner and rosé (from Pinot Noir) are vinified as light, dry wines. From the nature-friendly cultivation of the vineyards to the care and processing of the grapes and wine, the “Reinheitsgebot”, or purity law, of the church must be obeyed. Messwein cannot be produced without the permission of the bishop, and it must be only natural and unaltered. Willie Smiths Heritage Blend Cider 750mlSituated on 115 acres, Wille Smiths is 30 minutes south of Hobart in the Huon Valley, a once thriving apple-growing region that exported apples all over the globe and earned Tasmania the title of the 'Apple Isle'.
Our farm went organic in 1997, thanks to the innovation of current orchardist, Andrew Smith. It was a bold move, transforming the orchard to organic, and involved a lot of new techniques and training to achieve. With a new focus on organic farming and the use of the apples in our cider, they hope to bring back the glory of the 'Apple Isle' days once more.
The cidery is located at the orchard, meaning the fruit travels the smallest distance possible from tree to bottle. It's a full circle process which all occurs in one place, right here on the farm.
Be in no doubt, this is one of the countries of not the worlds greatest ciders. Bold statement for sure but we think you will agree once you try it. This used to be called the French Blend but the various type of apples have moved it away from a predominantly French blend so they have changed the name. Pizzini Nonna Gisella Sangiovese 2023There are horses for courses and wines for times, and this slippery, supple and savoury sangiovese from Victoria's King Valley is as important for mid-week pizza as the extra anchovies. Dried cherries, rubbed herbs and a faintly briny green olive tang ride on a wash of the distinctive aidity , divinly ordaining it to exorcise the devil that is melted cheese. Antidoto is barely made – given the lightest, cool, simple and short fermentation in concrete vat (fermentation finishes off skins once a certain density is realised). Chateau Lilian Ladouys 2018The 2018 Lilian Ladouys is such a gorgeous wine. Black cherry, gravel, scorched earth, leather and dark spice give the 2018 a brooding aromatic profile that suggests a potent wine. On the palate, though, the Lilian Ladouys is quite a bit more restrained than the bouquet indicates, in a good way. The 2018 is wonderfully deep and fleshy, but not at all heavy, with a natural sense of radiance that complements the more rustic leanings of Saint-Estèphe. Gabin et Felix Richoux Irancy Veaupessiot 2018Thierry embraces each vintage for its uniqueness, which makes for a lot of diversity between years. Veaupessiot, like the other Irancy wines in the range, when first opened can hold its cards close to the chest—2010, 2013 and 2015 vintages are exceptions. Like a great Nebbiolo wine, the initial resistance begins to soften with time open and all its noble qualities begin to unfold from the glass. They are a rustic, clean style of wine that with patience shows an array of specific noble complexities unique to this place. Veaupessiot is the most elegant and brightly aromatic than the other lieux-dits bottlings, Les Cailles and La Palotte. Les Cailles is the more stern and stony with equal polish and La Palotte the more rustic and earthy ode to the past glories of Irancy. THE SOURCE

Ronco dei Tassi Rosso Cjarandon Riserva 2018It's like a Bordelaise immigrant in Friuli. I don't mean these varieties (merlot, cabernet franc, cabernet sauvignon) are new to the area, in fact the cabernet family have been planted up here for centuries, I mean the style of the wine blends classical cabernet production - modern vinification and small oak elevage - with a local fruit spectrum which offer something different to their spirit home in France.
Middle weight. Dark cherry. dark berry and leafy aromatic with a touch of earl grey tea. Palate is clean and pure, sweetly fruited but also lithe and direct. Dark chocolate and oak splice are woven into the core of the wine. It's a lovely example, the main feature for me being that it holds excellent ripeness but is also mid-weight and cool fruited. Bannockburn S.R.H. Chardonnay 2023The 2023 SRH Chardonnay is textural and taut; it is bound in phenolics at this point, but clearly superb. The length of flavor shows this. The complexity shows this. It's a hugely impressive wine that speaks of white peach, green apples, green olive brine, white strawberries and white pepper. It's salty and a little chewy. The 12 rows of chardonnay that this wine is picked from are unique on the Bannockburn property in that they sit on an ancient sea bed. They were planted in the mid 1970s.
The intensity of flavour here is significant. This is a rocket of a wine. Grapefruit, lime, lemon curd, sweet peach, tinned pear and pineapple characters come wrapped in smoky-sweet cedarwood. Acidity, barley-and-lemon-drenched, is prominent too, in keeping with the power of the fruit. It needs time for certain, but this is quite a wine. (95+) CAMPBELL MATTINSON

SC Pannell Koomilya GT Block Shiraz 2019The old property is serviced with bio-char and layers in a lot of regenerative agriculture that aims to reintroduce lots of native species into the farm. The GT block is 31 year old vines grafted from gewurztraminer to shiraz, 'GT stands for grafted or gewurztraminer', says Steve Pannell in his press release, but I go to famed mid-to-late 90s DJ and music producer, GrooveTerminator, when I see the initials. Almost a third is whole bunch fermented here, and 20% new oak used. Also, this is beautiful drinking right now.
There's a freshness and lift to the wine despite the concentration and layering of dark fruit, woody spice and general inkiness. The character of gewurz seems omnipresent despite no gewurz here - it's floral and pretty shiraz, flirty and quite notably silky, more soft in the shiraz spectrum and red fruited inflections chime in with plum and dark, forest berry fruits. A lick of cola and char here but the wine floats and swishes on velvety tannins and finishes extremely long and fine. MIKE BENNIE, winefront.com

SC Pannell Koomilya JC Block Shiraz 2019From near 50-year-old vines on the Koomilya property, a unique site in McLaren Vale in many respects, and for vigneron Steve Pannell a place of spirituality and significance for him personally. Many connections to the place. Farmed with kindness to the land in mind. The wine sees around 20% whole bunches in the ferment, spends time in only used oak barrels. The notable thing here is the tannin quality. Wow.
To stutter, the tannin quality; wow. Immediately impressive, the cinch and pucker, the length of fine, weaving, silty tannins and the cool acidity that supports the glide and gloss of the wine. Dark cherry, ripe plums, some mocha and ferrous elements with dried herb, paperbark tree and salt bush characters in the mix. Bouquet and palate in accord on these descriptions. It's concentrated but doesn't feel heavy or cumbersome, the palate resetting with each sip with only latent spice and dried cherry characters lingering. SC Pannell Koomilya DC Block Shiraz 2019A very unique site tucked away between thatches of native forest and fringed by other old vine properties. The DC Block vines are 47 years old. There's 20% new oak employed here. A formidable and important project from Steve Pannell. The 2019 shiraz of McLaren Vale have a bit more dry reddiness as a thing, and there's some of that here, but the tannin and potency surpasses that.
It's highly perfumed, so rich and ripe, inky plummy fruit characters, brined black olive and a strong overlay of cedar, mahogany and clove. The palate is similarly generous and rich, plush and impenetrable, tightens on train tracks of cedary, firm and long ribbons of tannin and overall it feels succulent despite the heft and concentration. Formidable wine here, a quibble on how oak interplays in dryness with dryer spectrum fruit characters, but there's a hugely impressive wine in the glass regardless. MIKE BENNIE, winefront.com

The clay soils of the area impart a velvety-smooth and undeniably elegant feel, with a dense textural wave of ripe dark red fruits that coats the palate in concentration, complemented by sweet inner herbal tones and hints of lavender. Like the proverbial iron fist in a velvet glove, the 2018 reveals a massive wall of fine-grained tannins through the finish, leaving only nuances of sour citrus and currants to linger. This untamed beast of a Brunello will require extensive cellaring to reveal all of its charms. Coursodon St Joseph L'Olivaie 2020The 2020 Saint Joseph L'Olivaie comes from a parcel of 60-year-old vines. It's a winner, offering a rocking array of black and blue fruits, crushed stone, pepper, and flowers as well as medium to full-bodied richness on the palate. Concentrated lustrous mid ruby with orange tinges. Savoury and concentrated with fully integrated oak notes adding a spicy edge to the wine. Plenty of sour-cherry fruit on the palate. The 2018 Barolo Castelletto is a powerful, deep wine that is not ready to show all its cards yet. Then again, this is Monforte Barolo we are talking about.
