In a rye beer, malted rye subs for a portion of the malted barley, giving the beer a spicy kick. Add a big dose of hops, and you've got yourself a rye IPA. Ruthless Rye pours clear copper with two fingers of foam. The aroma is spicy and grassy -- the hops in this beer run more toward earth and pine than citrus, though hints of orange peel come through in the taste. The beer has a strong malt profile, so this is a well-balanced beer, one that's not very bitter despite its IPA status.
All around, this is a perfect spring beer -- not too heavy, not too aggressive, not too bitter, but full of flavor and easy to drink. Ruthless Rye IPA is 6.6 percent alcohol by volume
STEVE GREENLEE, BOSTON.COM
This rye ale is made with pale, caramel and chocolate malt in addition to rye. It is bittered with Bravo hops, the aroma hops are Chinook and what they call an “experimental hop,” and dry hopped with the same hops as the aroma ones, plus Citra.
Ruthless Rye IPA pours out of the bottle a dark transparent amber with orange highlights in the light and a creamy, slightly off-white head. The aroma is aggressively piney with grapefruit, rye bread and peppery spice. The strong pine scent is really nice. If Pine Sol smelled like this, people wouldn’t hate it. This is a medium-light bodied ale that has a smooth mouthfeel up front and a bit of stickiness on the finish. The flavor starts with strong rye bread, caramel and toffee. The finish is bitter and slightly spicy with notes of biscuit, pine, grapefruit rind and light tangerine. The aftertaste is floral and a bit sweet with traces of grapefruit and pine. The sweetness on the aftertaste gets a little stronger as you drink, but remains pleasant and never gets too strong. THERULINGGLASS.BLOGSPOT.COM.AU
