Pol Roger Taste 2026

Prince Wine Store

Maybe its easiest to start with who and what we are not! We are not a supermarket, discount chain, or lowest-common-denominator liquor outlet.  In some ways, we are not even a retailer who could be selling anything; tyres, widgets or beanie boos! We can only sell one thing…WINE!

What we are is an independently owned wine merchant, driven by our collective passion to source and share some of the greatest wines in the world with a similarly passionate group of punters…many of which are now friends and part of the PWS family.

There are two owners: Michael McNamara and Alex Wilcox (and their long-suffering wives), and together with 42 other committed (or perhaps should be committed) staff, they run three wine retail outlets in South Melbourne and Sydney as well as a wine bar/restaurant, Bellota and a wine cellarage business called Liquid Assets. In addition to this, we have, for some years, now run the benchmark WSET qualification in Victoria and NSW and a suite of more informal courses written by ourselves and our staff.

We import from a strong portfolio of producers from France, Italy, New Zealand, and California that reflect our love of wines that are made by people who share our passion for great wine and wines that reflect their place.

So, without getting too carried away, we love drinking, selling, talking about, and being in and around wine.

Who else would you wanna buy wine from!

Owned by Alex Wilcox and Michael McNamara.

Pol Roger

The family-owned house has, in part thanks to the enthusiastic endorsement of Winston Churchill, for long been regarded with great generosity and indulgence on the British market; in size terms, it is just a little larger than Bollinger, but much smaller than regional giants such as Moet, Laurent-Perrier, or Lanson. Stylistically, its range is much lighter and more delicate than Bollinger, for example… is all it should be, full of early-flowering grace and vanilla charm, while the vintage wine has a fine track record for slow, steady ageing. The 'prestige' cuvée, named after the company's most famous customers, was only launched in the mid 1980s and requires age before it begins to show the surging intensity and grandeur of dimension of some of its rivals. ANDREW JEFFORD, The New France

Stepping into Pol Roger's production facility in Epernay is like entering a different world. 'We call this the kitchen, ' introduced Laurent d'Harcourt, recently promoted Managing Director of the company. This was not like any kitchen I'd ever seen. Immaculately polished stainless steel tanks perfectly reflected shiny white tiles and snow-white surfaces. It was if we were entering a brain surgery until or a NASA assembly room, and I had an uneasy feeling that I might be asked to don a body suit, lest I contaminate this precision machine with a single molecule of foreign material. I have been buying Pol Roger for decades, but it was not until that moment that everything about this celestial estate suddenly snapped into perfect focus. The champagnes that emerge from this extraterrestrial building are as desperately precise, intricately delicate and flawlessly pristine as its polished interior, revealing the manifesto that defines all that lies within.

A blend of three champagne varieties in roughly equal proportions; 20% reserve wines; 150 parcels from 30 crus; 36-48 months on lees in bottle; 9-10 g/L dosage; bottle code indicates packaging date, with the first digit of denoting the year, and next three digits the day of that year. TYSON STELZER

Pierre Gimonnet

Didier Gimonnet is known for intensely bracing, invigorating Champagnes built on piercing acidity and salivating minerality, qualities that are enhanced through fermentation and aging exclusively in steel… when the wines are well-balanced, they are terrific. Readers will find a number of wines in this set of new releases that are gorgeous. One thing to note is that the reserve wines in the entry-level 1er Cru Cuis bottling are the NV blend of that year, which means those reserve wines are themselves blends of multiple vintages. Interestingly, the reserve wines are stored in magnum, which is a labor-intensive process, to say the least. ANTONIO GALLONI

Leclerc Briant

The goal at the House of Leclerc Briant is to create and market unique champagnes with an innovative style through a combination of meticulous attention to detail in both the vineyard and the winery, together with the utmost care of, and respect for, Mother Nature and the Terroirs.

A complex, reliable Champagne that would show well in all occasions thanks to its freshness and class. Drawing on all three grapes (chardonnay, pinot noir and pinot meunier), this has a complex grilled-nut and autolysis character overlayed across red berries and citrus fruits. Definitely a lot of reserve wine character here. The palate delivers lemons, grapefruit, peaches and mangoes in a refreshingly pure, fleshy style. The bright acidity, handy balance and tannins smoothly frame the finish JAMES SUCKLING

One of the great signatures of the region, its calligraphy flowing with elegance, panache and balance, the last reflected in the equal proportions of the three great varieties of Champagne. A flamboyant straw gold lustre, and an immediately seductive nose, encyclopaedic in its indulgence. Nougat, praline, white pepper, spice and nectarine were first to the page for this taster, but there is much more behind that, the sugar discrete yet edifying, the long yeast ageing responsible for a happy and altogether luminous marriage of power and finesse. Consistently excellent. SIMON FIELD MW, Decanter

the wine wafts from the glass with an alluring bouquet of green apple, brioche, pastry cream and buttered toast. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, impressively layered and complete, with a crisp but fleshy core of fruit, a youthfully frothy mousse and bright acids, concluding with a delicately chalky finish. This is one of the very finest—as well as among the most consistent—non-vintage brut bottlings from any of the Grandes Marques, and comes very warmly recommended. While it will be drinkable on release, it will reward some bottle age too. WILLIAM KELEY

Equal parts Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Meunier. It pours a bright silver straw hue and is fresh on opening, with a floral perfume of white flowers, fresh pear, and fresh almond. Medium-bodied, it’s attractive and approachable, with juicy peach fruit that fills the palate, although it stays refined, with a pinpoint mousse and a clean finish. It is a lovely entry to the range to enjoy now or over the next 6-8 years, and I love this as an aperitif style. JEB DUNNUCK

  3. Pierre Gimmonet NV Brut 1er Cuvee Cuis Blanc de Blancs NV
Pierre Gimmonet NV Brut 1er Cuvee Cuis Blanc de Blancs NV

The NV Brut 1er Cru Cuis (Magnum) is striking, largely because this release is based on 2009, which softens some of the edges of Cuis and results in a wine of notable texture and volume. With time in the glass, the 1er Cru really shines. The flavors are bright and citrus-inflected, with plenty of mineral undercurrents, in the classic Gimonnet style, yet the 2009 base adds just enough intensity to balance things out. At times, the Gimonnet Champagnes can be a bit austere, but the 1er Cru really shines. ANTONIO GALLONI

  5. Pol Roger Brut Vintage 2018
    Pol Roger Brut Vintage 2018

The 2018 Brut Vintage is absolutely delicious, just as it was last year. Floral and citrus notes give the 2018 lovely aromatic lift to play off its mid-weight personality. This is a classy, polished Vintage Champagne marked by notable brightness. Airy, elegant and silky in feel, the 2018 is an absolute delight. ANTONIO GALLONI

Pol Roger's 2018 vintage is showing many of the fine facets of the year upon release already, open and giving in style with roasted pear, ripe apricot and grapefruit skin, lightly creamy and developing richness in pecan and brown pastry. The Pinot Noir leads, relatively structured for the year while showing hints of the smoke and spice to come with further age. A wine that flows with some of the ease and charm of 2018, but that promises a fairly early – if rewarding – unfolding in bottle. DECANTER

Made from 60% Pinot Noir and the rest Chardonnay and pouring a vibrant silver/yellow color, the 2018 Champagne Brut Vintage (like all these wines) was aged in stainless steel without any oak. In the glass, it opens to springy and dewy floral aromas of honeydew melon, fresh flowers, citrus blossoms, and pastry dough. Medium-bodied and inviting, it’s approachable now and takes on a more mineral character on the palate without ever feeling austere. All its components move seamlessly through the palate, with a refined mousse and a kiss of sunny feel on the finish, but it’s clean and refined all the way through. This is going to improve with age, but it’s quite enjoyable now. Drink over the coming 15 or so years. It was made exclusively from Premier Cru and Grand Cru villages, was aged for 6 years on the lees JEB DUNNUCK

The 2018 Brut Vintage, with a dosage of seven grams per liter, exhibits a delicate bouquet of ripe orchard fruits, pineapple, peach, sweet spices and pastry, followed by a full-bodied, rich and elegantly creamy mid-palate that segues into a fleshy core of fruit with a penetrating, long and saline finish. Admirers of Pol Roger’s style will love it. WINE ADVOCATE

Pale lemon with a lively and persistent mousse and an attractive nose of Spring flowers, hawthorn and apple turnover, a hint of iodine too. Subtle, the wine is composed yet incisive, fresh and yet profound, with orchard fruit and a citric cut shaping the palate, and notes of verbena and sourdough in support. Expertly crafted and forthright, without indulging to excess, the 2018 is poised and confident but far from brash and with a clear potential to evolve gracefully. The wine broadens beautifully with a little time in the glass, with hints of honey and biscuit evidenced, and will do so equally impressively in bottle over the next five years and beyond. A solid Blanc De Blancs from Gimonnet, the 2018 Champagne 1er Cru Cuis Special Club Extra Brut pours a silver straw hue and is aromatic of crushed stones, fresh flowers, green pear, tarragon, and lime. 9. Pol Roger Winston Churchill 2018
    Pol Roger Winston Churchill 2018
The 2018 Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill is an elegant, polished wine very much in the gracious, lighter style of the year. Subtle citrus inflections, white peach, flowers, mint and white pepper are all beautifully delineated in the glass. Clean mineral notes infuse the vibrant finish. This is an especially airy Churchill, a Champagne built more on finesse and persistence than size. ANTONIO GALLONI

Like a finely tailored suit, this exhibits impeccable harmony, class and attention to detail. Integrates a firmly structured spine of acidity with flavors of ripe plum, candied lemon peel, lightly toasted hazelnut, brioche and chamomile, caressing the palate with the plush, creamy mousse. Long on the finish, with mineral, graphite and spice hints, this is hard to stop sipping now but should reward those who wait with even greater expression in years to come. Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. WINE SPECTATOR

This has complex aromas of croissant, acacia flowers, raw walnuts, flint and oyster shells. Very sleek, tight and structured on the palate, showing elegance and chalky minerality underneath. Seamless, classy finish with a deliciously dry, lightly phenolic citrus pith character coming through. Grand cru pinot noir with some chardonnay JAMES SUCKLING

After the 2015, the 2018 Sir Winston Churchill represents a notable return to form for this cuvée, finding an impressive level of depth and savour. The polish of ripe grand cru Pinot Noir shines through here, with plenty of black plum, blackberry and dark honey aromas, with brown butter and pastry richness lurking. There's certainly some fruit maturity here, and this may be a Sir Winston with a little more early-drinking charm than some, but it's a fine and true rendition of this cuvée's generous spirit. 10. Pol Roger Vintage Rose 2019
    Pol Roger Vintage Rose 2019
The 2019 Champagne Vintage Rosé is a more exceptional wine in the range and is structured, compact, and defined, with ripe raspberries. It pours a rich pink but not overly dark color and includes 18% red wine from Hautvillers, Vertus, and Ambonnay. This wine is compact and powerful, with very nice energy, real structure, saltiness, and rhubarb, along with a refined, pinpoint, lively, zesty mousse. There is fantastic purity here, with clarity and ripeness supported by refreshing acidity, and it can age for two decades or more without issue. (95) JEB DUNNUCK

The 2019 is one of the best Pol Roger Rosés we have tasted in recent memory. Quite a strong, bright pink colour in the glass, the nose melds notes of red apple and fresh blackcurrant, a vivid fruit core propped up by subtle notes of brioche and malted biscuits. The palate, too, focuses on that powerful fruit core. This is soft, glossy and succulent in fruit but vibrant and lifted with acidity as we have come to expect from 2019 as a vintage. The result is a sumptuous but moreish, refreshing rosé that has the sweetness of red fruit and the cut that all great Champagnes need. Drink it with or without food over the coming 15-20 years THOMAS PARKER MW

The 2019 Brut Rosé is a pretty rich, heady wine from Pol Roger, largely because of the inclusion of 18% still red wine in the blend. This rich, vinous Rosé packs a pretty substantial punch. Sweet red cherry, rose petal, dried herbs and kirsch are all dialed up. This is a decidedly extroverted Champagne that captures all the radiance of the year. ANTONIO GALLONI
