Distinctly ripe with plenty of charm and appeal, this is what Barbera is all about. The acidity is bright and that is reflected in the fruit through the tartness that snaps its way across the palate while the more obviously ripe and well rounded fruit follows up with admirable depth and plenty of spice inflected plum, orange zest and a bright, long, primarily red fruited finish that carries a light mineral flair and a faint hint of scorched earth. Plenty of potential here, this is a very classical styling that really screams out for food. Your ideal partner for a lot of meals and with more than enough going on to keep the geeks interested too. Pear, apple, a little green herb, some perfume, candle wax and smoked almond. It’s medium-bodied, bright and has good flavour, though not too much, and it keeps itself trim with some light citrus bite, a slightly waxy texture, some chalkiness, and offers a finish of good length with some preserved lemon tang. The 2020 Barolo Monvigliero is a new wine in this range. Soaring aromatics and bright, sculpted fruit all race out of the glass. Ethereal and light on its feet, with striking depth, the Monvigliero is fabulous. It's very clearly one of the wines of the vintage. Alberto Alessandria shortened aging to 18 months in wood in order to not overwhelm the fine Monvigliero tannins, especially considering he was working with a new cask. It's a decision that paid off handsomely Silky, vibrant and exceptionally pure, the 2020 displays notes of red fruit, white pepper and orange peel. This classically austere, young Barolo shuts down in the glass, but its greatness is evident. (96) ANOTONIO GALLONI

I really like Monvigliero as a cru, and for sure it’s the famed bit of Verduno, though the prices seem to be going nuts for it these days! Importer: Beaune & Beyond.

Dark cherry, red fruits, earthy and peppery, some liquorice and orange peel, dried flowers, some nutty and spicy wood. It’s a supple wine, tangerine and red fruits, lots of spice, pulls a bit chalky and grainy, almost like a squishy sort of Burgundy in a way. There’s some oak influence here, albeit mild, that I’d rather not be there, though it’s a very good wine all the same and it should integrate with a few more years in bottle. Made with grapes from four different vineyard sites located in three different townships, the classic 2021 Barolo from Mauro Veglio opens with aromas of red berry, hay, dark spice and a whiff of eucalyptus. Full-bodied, elegant and savory the palate offers red cherry, cranberry and star anise accompanied by fine-grained tannins and bright acidity. From theSan Sebastiano, Monforte d’Alba, and the vine age is between 15 and 65 years old. Five days of cold maceration are followed by 15 days of simple, traditional and non-invasive 100% whole-berry primary fermentation, then five days of post-fermentation submerged-cap maceration. The malolactic fermentation is spontaneous. After a period of barrel ageing, the wine is bottled the following autumn.
A deep garnet red colour. Aromas of fruits such as raspberries, cherries and wild strawberries make way for a finish with more evolved rose and violet notes. It is polished on the palate, with hints of crisp red berries and citrus fruit. Silky smooth, enveloping tannins are fused with vibrant acidity, striking a perfect balance that leads to a leisurely finish
