Archibald Tonic

Tonic - a medicinal substance taken to give a feeling of vigour or well-being.
When is a tonic, tonic and how good can tonic be?

In Paris earlier this year we were dining at a fantastic new little restaurant called Clamato in the 1th ARR. As we had just arrived off the long haul Perth to Paris a refreshing aperitivo was in order and the standard gin and tonic was ordered but standard was not delivered. The different it turns out was this amazing French Tonic - Archibald tonic, made just outside of Bordeaux and proudly French is made with locally sourced ingredients only and this means no Quinine, in it place distilled Gentian root and juniper berries. The result a delicious sipping tonic, perfect by itself as a non-alcoholic balanced drink and as we found perfect with gin. Anyway it was really good.

Then three days later we were at another highly recommended restaurant, and there it was again. A bit of online research and it turns out this French Gin was taking the local gastronomic scene by storm - celebrated by a raft of celebrated chefs and recognised by the College Cullinaire de France as the only soda that is part of French Heritage and as all wine lovers know the French take this stuff seriously.

A couple of emails and it was confirmed that not only was the brand available to be imported into Australia, but we could try the full range in Paris that week at the RAW wine - organic wine fair.
So here we are six months later, and the full range has arrived.

These are great tonics, perfect if you are looking for a serious but non-alcoholic drink and great to mix with your Favorite spirits, we hope you like them as much as I did and we will be trying to get a number of the local French resturants.

Archibald sipping tonics may not be what you are expecting in classic Indian tonic water in that there is no Quinine but they certainly provide feeling of vigour and well-being.

  1. Archibald Original Tonic 200ml
    Archibald Original Tonic 200ml

Archibald tonic is made not from Quinine but from Gentian root and is produced like a gin using a century-old copper still in the south west of France. It makes a great non-alcoholic drink in its own right. Gentian is a flowering plant found globally and has a natural bitterness which helps with digestion. The Gentian is macerated while the juniper is distilled separately.

The two are combined with water from a local spring in Cognac and then finally distilled. This process produces a complex tonic with aromas of orange citrus and a smoky herbaceous note with a subtle bitter touch. Should you want to make a classic G&T, these flavours enhance rather than obscure the flavour of any gin used. As well as being organic, this tonic has even more to prevent it from harming the planet. The labels are made from recycled sugar cane fibre and printed using vegetable ink. It is being used by some great chefs including Alain Ducasse and Anne-Sophie Pic, and you can find them in the Trinity and Portland UK Michelin restaurants.

  2. Archibald Sipping Soda no.1 - Bergamont 250ml
    Archibald Sipping Soda no.1 - Bergamont 250ml

A sipping soda wit Gentain and Bergamont aged in Oak.

An original and perfectly balanced aromatic profile: mixed or enjoyed on its own, this Limited Edition surprises and seduces.

From citrus to smoky notes: a true sensory experience
At nose : a tangy top note, a zest of bergamot and fresh gentian roots, then appears in the heart note a complex and bewitching set of powerful aromas: bitter orange, roots, undergrowth, camphor, to finish on a note of deliciously intriguing base note: jasmine tea, resinous, beech smoke.

In mouth : the bitterness dominates with a powerful attack in gentian, round and ample. This is followed by delicious notes of grapefruit, earl grey, toasted oak and a very long finish with empyreumatic and medicinal notes.

Enjoy it as a mixer with brown spirits or on its own

An atypical aromatic profile which makes it a unique mixer for spirits with character, particularly whiskeys and cognacs: its fine bubbles, its acidulous and smoky notes bring freshness and complexity, without distorting the initial aromatics. In the end, the spirit is sublimated.

Thus, a use as simple as it is wonderful, is the Highball: in a long drink glass, large cubes of ice, 2 cl of whiskey and our Archibald Limited Edition.

It can also be savored on its own: its aromatic complexity allows a real tasting moment and then becomes an alternative to an alcoholic drink... without alcohol!

At nose: a spicy top note that lets the ginger unfold. Then, the earthy and fresh aromas of gentian mingle.

In mouth: The spicy and delicate notes of fresh ginger are enhanced by the freshness of gentian. On the finish, subtly bitter and earthy notes of gentian appear.

To be enjoyed on its own or in lengthen
