Sicily

A mere generation ago, there mightn't have been much to say here about Sicilian wine.  Apart from Marsala, the reds were mostly sold in bulk to fatten up pale wines from cooler European vintages, or lost in the production of vermouth somewhere.

But with it's special place at the confluence of Mediterranean and North African cultures, there's been a modern day renaissance in wine and food here that is nothing short of a remarkable.  Australians have an affinity for this blend of warm Mediterranean climate, migrant culture and vibrant food.  Sicily just makes sense.

Red or white?
Red production is dominated by Nero d'Avola, grown in most regions across the island. Ranging  from juicy medium bodied cherry fruited styles blended with the lighter Frappato, to sturdy dark, structured and plummy numbers that will appeal to Shiraz lovers.

Nerello Mascalese is exciting for its structured, fragrant and tannic wines, coming on high from the steep volcanic slopes of the still very active Mount Etna.

Surprisingly, there's also plenty of white planted here, chief among them Carricante. Distinctively refreshing with notes of smoke, cut herbs and lemon tonic.

  1. Feudo Montoni Lagnusa Nero d'Avola 2020
Feudo Montoni Lagnusa Nero d'Avola 2020
In a cloud of crushed violet candies, sugar-dusted currants and hints of sage evolve, making the 2020 Nero d'Avola Lagnusa a total aromatic pleasure. Soft-textured and round, this impresses further with ripe red and blue-toned fruits, complemented by sweet spice over a core of vibrant acidity. The Lagnusa finishes remarkably fresh yet long, leaving the mouth-watering while still resonating on hints of blackberry and a bitter twang of sour citrus. ERIC GUIDO, vinous.com

  2. Vicoletto Nero D'Avola Terre Sicilia 2021
Vicoletto Nero D'Avola Terre Sicilia 2021
Made from Nero d'Avola cultivated in northwestern Sicily. The soils are clay and sand, and the climate is very windy, cool, and dry. Small yields and dedicated winemaking combine to produce a wine that is fresh, versatile and enjoyable.

This vibrant red is bursting with fresh cherry flavour and aroma, and a delicate note of spicy liquorice on the finish. Punchy flavours with pastille red fruits and brisk flourish of crushed rock add a lovely savoury edge with a dollop of dark ground spice. Such a great little drop here that sings with energy and vibrant fruit.

Tenuta Aglaea Etna Rosso Thalia 2019
Comune di Castiglione di Sicilia e Randazzo - 750 m. (2250 feet) above sea level

From the zone of Randazzo, this is a step up in class. Light on its feet, Thalia has an undercurrent of power that builds in the glass. A mesmerising mix of bramble, sour cherries, smoked meats and wild herbs marries together. This 2018 shows darker depths of black fruits with some minerally ferrous tones. This has incredible staying power and class, all delivered in a lithely medium body.

  4. Eduardo Torres Acosta Pierrera Nerello Mascalese 2020
Eduardo Torres Acosta Pierrera Nerello Mascalese 2020
This bottling is 90% Nerello Mascalese and a 10% mix of other local varieties. The Pirrera site sits at 850 meters on the north side of Mt. Etna. The name is derived from the particularly rocky nature of the vineyard as well as the volcanic stones quarried from a 1614 lava flow. The vineyard had been abandoned decades before Eduardo took on its rehabilitation.

Vine age averages 50 years in age and is later picked then several other wines due to the elevated site. Bunches are generally destemmed but with some whole left in the ferments using indigenous yeasts in cement tanks without temperature control or sulfur. Maceration lasts about 15 days. The wine is aged for 16 months in concrete tanks and then bottled without fining or filtering and with a very small amount of sulfur.

  5. Tenute Orestiadi Molino a Vento Nerello Mascalese 2022
Tenute Orestiadi Molino a Vento Nerello Mascalese 2022

Grown in the red volcanic soils of Sicily it offers a pretty impressive look at nerello mascalese from this unique and fascinating region. This is all steel tank for freshness and a couple of months in barrique just to frame out the fruit. This is also the second vintage in a row we have stocked so you know it's good.

There is a little more verve and energy here but still runs a fairly consistent line of red currant, black raspberry with a little of that smokey, mineral edge that makes nerello such an interesting varietal. A little blood orange/amaro thing going on to which appealing and and a black peppercorn spice on the finish. Nailed it again.

  6. Girolamo Russo Etna Rosso Cru San Lorenzo 2021
Girolamo Russo Etna Rosso Cru San Lorenzo 2021

The Girolamo Russo 2021 Etna Rosso San Lorenzo is a very exciting wine with so much energy and verve. It opens to lean-bodied concentration with a brilliant ruby shine. The wine shows a long array of wild fruit and tiny berry aromas backed by crushed white pepper and crushed stone. San Lorenzo is one of the most impressive interpretations of Etna. I highly recommend you try and cellar this wine. (96+) MONICA LARNER

Subtle notes of ripe red berries, like cherries and strawberries, with hints of lilac, red spices and crushed stones. Some blood oranges, too. Medium-bodied, polished and even on the palate with supple tannins that have a dusty texture. Juicy acidity and a crunchy, mineral finish. Drink or hold. JAMES SUCKLING

  7. Girolamo Russo Etna Rosso Cru Feudo di Mezzo 2021
Girolamo Russo Etna Rosso Cru Feudo di Mezzo 2021
I tasted this wine before it officially went to market, and although it definitely needs more time in bottle, I think we are in for something very special. With high-elevation fruit from ancient, twisted 100-year-old vines, this expression is beautifully ethereal and almost weightless in character. The Girolamo Russo 2021 Etna Rosso Feudo di Mezzo offers blue flower, ashy smoke, licorice and grilled herb. The tannins are silky and caressing. (96+) MONICA LARNER

  8. Girolamo Russo Etna Rosso Cru Calderara Sottana 2021
Girolamo Russo Etna Rosso Cru Calderara Sottana 2021
The Girolamo Russo 2021 Etna Rosso Calderara Sottana emerges as one of the finest wines made on Etna in recent years. The bouquet is nuanced and rich with many moving parts, which span from red fruits, cassis, blue flower and campfire ash. These tones are linked together with seamless integration but remain lifted and bright nonetheless. The wine shows fine structure and plenty of minerality on the close. (96) MONICA LARNER

Sweet berry and flower aromas with orange peel and blossom. Very intense and flavorful yet stealth and focused. It's medium-bodied with ultra-fine tannins that run the length of the wine. Chewy and polished. Drink after 2025 but already extremely attractive. JAMES SUCKLING

  9. Tornatore Etna Rosso 2020
    Tornatore Etna Rosso 2020
The 2020 Etna Rosso is remarkably pretty, leading off with dusty roses and dried strawberries complicated by suggestions of violet and lavender. This flows effortlessly across the palate with floral-laced red fruits enhanced by sour citrus and spice. The 2020 lingers incredibly long yet maintains a lovely inner freshness. The 2020 is exceptionally pure and impossible to resist. ERIC GUIDO, Vinous

  10. Passopisciaro Passorosso Etna Rosso 2016
    Passopisciaro Passorosso Etna Rosso 2016

Raspberry, cherry, light spice and smokiness, almond, floral prettiniess this vintage too. Bright red fruits, firm, brick dust tannin, very ‘mineral’ and stony, slip of orange peel and dried herb on the finish. It’s a complete iteration of Passorosso with weight of fruit, freshness and perfume all in the mix. Splendid (95) GARY WALSH, The Wine Front

Woodland berry, smoke, wild rose and Mediterranean scrub lead the way on this vibrant red. Racy and succulent, the savory, focused palate delivers juicy strawberry, red cherry, star anise and chopped herb alongside polished tannins and bright acidity. A saline note gives it a tangy finish KERIN O’KEEFFE, Wine Enthusiast
