RED WINE
Burgundy
The soils and vineyards of Burgundy have been very well defined thanks to the studious Monks a few hundred years ago - and the swathe of others who have picked up the baton since.
The Golden Slope (Cote D'or) is divided into two; the Cote du Nuit to the north and the Cote de Beaune to the south. Pinot noir dominates the Cote du Nuit as it loves the limestone nature of the soils and Chardonnay thrives in the heavier calcareous marl soils on the Cote de Beaune.
The essence of Burgundy comes down to the place where the vines are grown. The more definitive you can be (e.g. a single vineyard like Grand Cru or Premier Cru) then the higher the price you'll pay. A village wine, which will most likely be a blend of vineyards from within the village won't be as expensive as its origins are a little broader.
To the north, Chablis is an outpost. Lying closer to Champagne than the Cote d'Or, its marine fossil laden soils (Kimmeridgian clay) make scintillating renditions of chardonnay which age beautifully.
To the south the Cote Chalonnais, Maconnais and Beaujolais make wines that are easier on the pocket. There's some great value to be had here. A few different grapes are added to the mix including Gamay and Aligoté (as well as pinot noir and chardonnay).
Red or White?
Both.
Grapes
White: Chardonnay, Aligote
Red: Pinot Noir, Gamay
Styles
The purity of chardonnay is on full display in a bottle of Chablis. Chiselled and tightly wound this is a crisp and salivating white. White Burgundy tends towards a riper heart but with spicy oak support.

Domaine de Bellene Vosne Romanee Les Quartiers de Nuits 2018 Vieilles Vignes
An overtly floral-suffused nose displays a lovely array of spice elements on the essence of red berry fruit aromas. I very much like the mid-palate mouthfeel of the sappy medium-bodied flavors that terminate in a powerful, rustic and mocha-inflected finish. This is quite a robust Vosne villages that will require at least some patience. BURGHOUND
Always one of the wines of the range. Exhibits all the kirsch cherry and silken texture of a classic Vosne with the addition of some nice Asian spice coming from the 50% whole cluster. MICHAEL McNAMARA

Domaine de Bellene Nuits St Georges Chaignots 1er 2018
A fresh, pure and layered nose consists of liqueur-like dark berry fruit, plum, violet, earth and touches of spice. There is excellent richness to the slightly more refined medium weight flavors that coat the palate with dry extract where the supporting structure arrives all at once on the grippy and mildly drying finish. I suspect that this will round into form once the sulfur addition is more completely integrated. BURGHOUND
I haven't always been the biggest fan of Nicolas' version of Chaignots - although I love the vineyard with its the nod to the "silk" of Vosne a nice counterpoint to the rusticity of Nuits. This year this is a beautiful example and the best I've seen from him. MICHAEL McNAMARA

Domaine de Bellene Nuits St Georges Chaignots 1er 2019Very ripe yet reasonably fresh aromas slowly reveal nuances of cassis, red cherry and a whiff of wood. The earthy and vibrant medium weight flavors possess excellent density, indeed even opulence, while managing to remain relatively refined on the ever-so-slightly warm and austere finale. Lovely and firm enough to reward 12 to 15 years of cellaring.

Domaine de Bellene Beaune Vieilles Vignes 1er Hommage Francois Potel 2019The 2019 Beaune "Hommage à Françoise Potel" 1er Cru is named after Nicolas Potel's late mother and is a blend of five Premier Crus. It has vibrant red cherries, kirsch and cassis on a nose that is more opulent than Les Teurons. The palate is well balanced with succulent red berry fruit. Fine tannins frame the peppery finish, which fans out nicely. Lovely length here. Very fine. NEAL MARTIN, www.vinousmedia.com2019Pinot noirFrance358$165.00 As low as $148.50

Domaine de Bellene Nuits St Georges Vieilles Vignes 2020
Notes of freshly turned earth, floral and underbrush add breadth to the various dark berry fruit scents. There is again excellent volume and mid-palate density to the sappy medium weight flavors that possess classic Nuits muscle though perhaps just a bit less rusticity than usual. This is really quite good and fashioned in a built-to-age style. BURGHOUND, www.burghound.com
As ever, this is one of Potel's best wines. It is quintessentially Nuits St Georges. Earth aromas lay next to red-moving-to-black fruits. Floral lift but it's more red petals than violets. The usual hint of dourness you love in Nuits. Red fruit attack, minerality and energy to burn with a more muscular texture than the Volnay. It's always a wine that starts to show it's true colours after five years. This is no different. Excellent. MICHAEL MCNAMARA, PWS

Jean-Luc & Eric Burguet Vosne Rouge Dessus 2019
This is aromatically similar to the Vosne villages with just a bit more wood influence. The super-sleek and sophisticated middle weight flavors are even more intensely mineral-driven while displaying excellent length on the youthfully austere finale. This is really quite classy though unlike the villages it is sufficiently structured that it will definitely need at least 5 to 7 years first and reward a decade plus. "Outstanding" BURGHOUND

Faiveley Gevrey Chambertin VV 2019
Soft wood and a top note of menthol are present on the plum and sauvage scented nose. The racy, intense and again attractively textured medium-bodied flavors possess both fine depth and length on the youthfully austere finale. This is a lovely Gevrey villages that should reward mid-term keeping. "Outstanding" BURGHOUND
Unwinding in the glass with aromas of dark berries, cassis, rich spices and loamy soil, the 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes is medium to full-bodied, layered and fleshy, with an ample core of lively, concentrated fruit and a textural, enveloping profile. This elegant, gourmand wine will offer a broad drinking window. WILLIAM KELLEY
That's a fine and more florally perfumed nose - pure and clean like the others. Supple, deeper, great texture here. Great depth of finishing flavour - almost 1er cru level here. BILL NANSON, Burgundy Report

Simon Bize Savigny 1er Cru Talmettes 2019Less airy, a little less open but seemingly the nose that’s the most complete – if not largest – the finest of perfume here. Mouth-filling, structural too, almost the first sensation of a little tannic grain – almost. This the wine that’s most tight at the core but I hazard to say, possibly the most complete here too. Boris Champy Pommard En Bouef 2020
The 2020 Pommard En Boeuf, matured in 50% new oak, is quite backward on the nose and demanded encouragement from the glass, gradually, reluctantly unfolding with slightly earthy black fruit, hints of Earl Grey and tobacco. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red berry fruit, fine acidity, touches of sage and white pepper, the 50% whole bunch beautifully integrated on the finish. What a lovely Pommard, one that is Premier Cru level in all but name. NEAL MARTIN, vinous.com

Faiveley Gevrey Cazetiers 2017 1er
I always think this site suffers a little from the "Rousseau Effect" - not that Rousseau, the Domaine - in that it doesn't seem to be lavished with attention from the consumers as does its neighbour Clos St Jacques. Though the vineyards are, in my mind, potentially equal. In the right hands Cazetieres is a superb Premier Cru and is often one of the best wines produced at Faiveley.
Here the wood regimen is no longer subtle though it stops short of masking the beautifully layered aromas of plum, spice, dark currant and freshly turned earth. The highly energetic and delineated middle weight plus flavors exude noticeable minerality on the powerful and focused finish that displays outstanding depth and persistence. Moreover, the finish really fans out as it sits on the palate. "Sweet Spot, Outstanding" BURGHOUND
The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Cazetiers comes from Faiveley's substantial four-hectare parcel. I find this has more gumption and detail than the Lavaux Saint-Jacques at the moment. The nose features layers of blackberry, raspberry and crushed stone aromas, and the sweet, candied palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannin. Blood orange and quince infuse the red fruit toward the finish. Excellent. NEAL MARTIN
Since the takeover of Domaine Dupont-Tisserandot, Faiveley now have 4ha of Cazetiers spread across numerous plots. Rich dense purple with a heady nose of riper fruit including some black notes. Juicy dark raspberry notes, well spread across the palate, a few minerals at the back. Love the aftertaste (95) JASPER MORRIS MW
Ooh, deep, aromatic, complex, oaked. Full but fresh, mobile, good but not excessive energy - it's a new barrel so there's some of that too - but this is really a great wine, textured, and delicious. A wall of finishing flavour. BILL NANSON2017Pinot noirFrance358$400.00 As low as $360.00 -
Chantereves Savigny Les Beaune Dessus de Montschenevoy 2020Dessus de Montchenevoy is located above the renowned Savigny 1er Cru, Aux Guettes. It's a west-facing site at an altitude of 350m and is surrounded by forest. The altitude and cool air from the forest help moderate the climate of the site, resulting in a longer ripening period. The plot is organically farmed, and its isolation from other vines allows Tomiko and her team to limit spraying.
5 Star Wine. Tucked into the forest, they have had to do the most work here in terms of the life of the very thin soil. The cooler site makes this even more floral, really lovely. So juicy and so lifted at the same time. Racily saline at the finish. JASPER MORRIS MW

Christian Clerget Chambolle Musigny Aux Croix 2020
Slightly more deeply pitched aromas are comprised by notes of violet, plum and dark raspberry. The texture of the sweet, delicious and caressing medium-bodied flavors contrast markedly with that of the firm and slightly chewy finish that offers excellent depth and persistence. This isn't especially refined but it works anyway plus it's a wine that should repay 7 to 10 years of cellaring. OUTSTANDING. BURGHOUND

Christian Clerget Vosne Romanee Les Violettes 2020This is the first wine to display any appreciable reduction and it's enough to blur the nuance of what are clearly ripe dark berry aromas. Otherwise, there is very good vibrancy and cut to the delicious medium weight flavors that possess solid mid-palate density before culminating in a rustic, powerful and impressively long and complex finish. Like the Aux Croix, this isn't refined but it is balanced all the same. This is one to look for if you have the patience. OUTSTANDING, TOP VALUE. BURGHOUND
Dark fresh purple, plenty of energy here. A minor reduction but nothing to worry about. A beautiful swelling fruit on the palate, succulent but not lush nor unduly ripe, fresher at the finish, the whole bunches doing their thing. Around one third whole bunch. Pavelot Savigny-les-Beaune 1er Cru Dominodes 2020An extremely ripe yet again, still fresh nose offers up its aromas of mocha, poached plum and black cherry jam. Pavelot Savigny Les Beaune 1er Cru Gravains 2020Here the wood and menthol influences are more prominent though not invasive on the ripe aromas of poached plum, black cherry and a touch of the sauvage. There is again very good richness and vibrancy to the caressing and palate soaking flavors that exhibit excellent length on the slightly warm finale. This also needs to add better depth, but more should eventually develop if given time. BURGHOUND
The 2020 Savigny-lès-Beaune Aux Gravins 1er Cru has a perfumed, floral bouquet with black cherries, boysenberry and violet aromas, a little heady but managing to stay focused. The palate is medium-bodied with a granular texture, perhaps the spiciest of Pavelot’s cuvées with a gentle grip on the finish. Give this 2-3 years in bottle. Wow, what a lovely aroma of raspberry and dark cherry fruit laid over a faintly stoney backbeat and gorgeous blue florals of violets. The palate is full and ripe but nuanced and full of energy. Intensity of flavour without heft. I love the limestone drying quality in this wine and the mouth aromas that mark it as a Volnay through and through. Tannins are well managed and covered by the fruit. I love this. MICHAEL MCNAMARA, PWS
Ripe aromas of both red and dark berry fruit enjoy pretty floral top notes. There is again very good energy to the solidly dense and voluminous flavors that are at once generous yet grippy and rustic on the firm finish. Discreet but not invisible wood frames ripe but reasonably fresh aromas of various dark berries, pretty floral nuances and Savigny style earth. The succulent, palate coating and energetic middle weight flavors conclude in a dusty, youthfully austere and nicely persistent finale. BURGHOUND
Cask sample. Deep purplish crimson. Intensely aromatic. Elderberry notes. Juicy fruit dominates the light structure. Pleasing and relatively early developed. JANCIS ROBINSON
Love this wine. Has the early supple appeal of Savigny but it's not simple. Red fruits, brown spice and lingering florals plus a dusting of background wood characterise the nose. The palate is immediately red fruited and eveloping with a supple texture that again has some drying limestone dusty quality. It's easier than the Nuits and a more immediate proposition but it will stand cellaring for at least 5-8 years. MICHAEL MCNAMARA, PWS

Domaine de Bellene Vosne Romanee Les Suchots 1er 2020
The ripest wine of the range, maybe on the cusp of going too far. Dark liquer cherries, in fact a huge fruit profile that, at first taste, subsumes the oak to make it a mouthful of juicy dark fruited pinot. However, the tannins are neatly but persistently sitting there in the background. Almost, too youthful to judge right now, it needs atime to come together. Certainly a monolith of fruit and tannin and ripeness. On it's track record you'd have to say it will come together over ten years. MICHAEL MCNAMARA, PWS
Cask sample. Aromatic and well balanced – almost approachable now! Much less obviously tannic than the other wines in this stable, with racy, juicy fruit before an appetising, dry finish. JANCIS ROBINSON

Domaine de Bellene Nuits St Georges Chaignots 1er 2020Step up again here. While Chaignots is in Nuits St Georges, it hugs the boundary of Vosne Romanee and so much of this wine presents the best of both those communes. Turned earth, background wood and red into blue fruits vie frame a lovely opening aromatic. The palate is rich and supple but there's also a lively vein running through it making stand up across the palate - suppleness and energy a great combination. Lingering fine, silty tannins draw a boundary around the red fruit and wood spice. It's full of life this wine.
