  1. Galia Villages Tinto Fino 2015
    Galia Villages Tinto Fino 2015
Small parcels from the villages of San Esteban, Fuentelcésped, Hontangas, Cuevas de Provanco and Trigueros de Valle. 88%Tinto Fino (20% whole bunch) with 10% Garnacha (100% whole bunch) and some Albillo white. Aged 21 months, partly in Darnajou 225 and 600 litres, plus 2 Taransaud 1200 litre foudre in their third year.

Powerful but classy with fine fresh acidity and delightful earthen aromas developing with time open to air. Predominantly in a blue fruit register, with a crush of twig and glycerol tempered by fine minerality. Sweet spices and a vegetal tannin thread in the mouth replicates the woodsiness on the nose. Delicate bitters on the tongue elongate the finish, holding the mouth poised to notice the fine cloud of earthen-blue florals beyond. SCOTT WASLEY

  2. Dominio del Aguila Picaro Tinto Fino 2018
Dominio del Aguila Picaro Tinto Fino 2018
Jorge Monzon's brazen approach landed him a job at one of the world's best wineries, Domaine Romanee Conti. He simply knocked on the door at the famed Vosne Romanee estate and stayed for 10 years. His last few years saw him working alongside the winery's cellar master, Bernard Noblet learning all aspects of making these prestigious wines. He began to understand that everything counts, even if it seems insignificant, that shortcuts should be avoided. He learned the beauty of wine.

While working for 'the man' Jorge bought as many plots of old vine tinto fino (tempranillo) around his hometown village of La Aguilera in the province of Burgos - one of the best zones in Ribera del Duero. Many were destined for grubbing up or replanting with trellised vines. To date, Jorge has 66 hectares spread across 250 plots!

'…it has the depth, concentration and nuance of the best wines from many wineries. It's produced in a more jovial style, but the wine comes from old vines that always have a field blend with small percentages of whatever grapes that are all fermented together, and these vines always produce a serious and deep wine. In 2018, it matured in French oak barrels for 11 months. This is very young and tender, expressive and aromatic, very much in line with the 2016. It has lots of energy and power, more than you might think, and it's serious. It's drinkable now, but it should get even better with some time in bottle. LUIS GUTIERREZ, wineadvocate.com

  3. Palacios Remondo 'La Vendimia' Garnacha Tempranillo 2020
Palacios Remondo 'La Vendimia' Garnacha Tempranillo 2020

This estate is the home of Alvaro Palacios, the famed Priorat producer. Having formally departed Alfaro in 1989 in order to set up shop in Priorat, Alvaro 'returned' in 2000 following the death of his father, Jose, who set up the family business in 1945 and ran it from then on.

Under Jose, Palacios Remondo was a conventional Rioja of industrially-farmed Tempranillo expressed within the Crianza-Reserva-etctera model of production. In the years under Alvaro's guidance, the vineyards and wines have undergone extraordinary change. Nowadays the vineyards are bio-dynamically grown low-crop organic plantings of local Garnacha genetics, with a scattering of Viura.  Any Tempranillo in Palacios Remondo wines is purchased from good growers near Haro on the Ebro's north shore.

    Telmo Rodriguez Lanzaga 2018
This is so beautifully balanced with bright fruit, creamy and crunchy acidity and delicate tannins. Full and compressed with very polished tannins that go on for minutes. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold. JAMES SUCKLING

Lanzaga a village wine, combining 35 plots, handled separately and blended after selection. Aged a year or so: half the wine matures in relatively neutral 1500-2000 litre wood; the rest in a mix of 225 and 600 litre barrels (at most 10% new oak).

  5. Alegre Valganon Garnacha de dos pueblo 2020
Alegre Valganon Garnacha de dos pueblo 2020
This is a masterpiece of delicacy; open-hearted and lingering beautifully.
It smells of fennel, radish and quinine bark with a sweet-spice-squeak. Lean and lipstick-kissy, fine wild fennel sweetness repeats in the acid squeak at end.
It has excellent ripeness in harmony with fine structure and incredible freshness, but is super-lean in glycerol terms, and wonderfully fresh. SCOTT WASLEY

It's beautiful and poised. With air the aromatics soar, the florals and bright blue fruits reach out from the glass beckoning.
It feels soft and glossy on the palate but through that there is a vein of rocky minerality and super filigreed tannins hold the wines shape and draw out the flavour.
Slowly building and slowly finishing. It's long and there is so much woven through this gorgeous wine that I could taste and smell it all day long.
I believe it will age incredibly well on the pure harmony it displays now.
    This is genuinely beautiful. ROSCOE

  6. Biurko Gorri Tempranillo 2021
    Biurko Gorri Tempranillo 2021
Biurko Gorri sit in the far north-eastern corner of appellation Rioja, on the slopes of Monte Yoar in eastern Sierra Cantabria. These are organically grown vineyards lying in a rolling landscape at over 600m on poor limestone-clay soils. Bargota have been certified organic since 1998, hand-picking all their fruit.

That really is incredible to think and the quality shines here. This puts a lot of bottlings at the same or more to shame.

Soft and mineral, with a mix of red and dark fruit in a floral register. Open and expressive, with nutty tannins and a lick of spicy acidity. There are purple and blueberry aromas with savoury elements of dried lavender, heather and shaved nutmeg. The palate is clean, with refreshing natural acidity. Fruitfulness lengthens to a long, savoury earthen finish and the chalk soil is reflected in fine tannin.

  7. Tomfoolery Burla Negra Tempranillo 2022
    Tomfoolery Burla Negra Tempranillo 2022

The fruit from selected vineyards is hand picked and fermented in small open fermenters, which are pumped over by hand twice daily to maximize oxygenation and purity of fermentation. Once the wine is dry it is then gently basket pressed minimizing the extraction of harsh extractive tannins. Matured for 12 months in seasoned French oak barriques.

Characteristic cherry aromas with dried herbs. This seafarin’ wine fires cannonballs of red cherry fruit across the bow with a herby oak lift before walking the plank of fine acid balanced with rich texture, scuttled with a ballast of grainy tannins.

  8. Casa Rojo Ribera del Duero Tinta Fina Tempranillo 2019
Casa Rojo Ribera del Duero Tinta Fina Tempranillo 2019

100% Tinto Fino, from the towns of Villálvaro, Sotillo de la Ribera, Moradillo, Hontoria, Peñafiel, Quintana del Pidio, Anguix and Curiel de Duero. Average altitude of 850 to 900 meters, all in the province of Burgos and Valladolid. The grapes come from old vineyards between 35 and 100 years old. In French oak barrels for 428 days, having undergone malolactic fermentation in barrels for 10% of the final blend.

Smashed red and black fruits with that blue-note hit and spicy oak to top it off and little highlights of smokey, leather notes make for a heady and complex nose. Again, plenty of concentration for the mixed, wild berry fruit profile but never at the lack of freshness or energy. Firm but plush tannins grip the black fruits plastering them to the palate and driving home to a full and rich finish. Definitely see some oak here but it suits the style perfectly.

  9. Milu 2021
    Milu 2021

Milú ‘Milú, the doubled named entry-level wine from the tiny Quinta Milú winery, is a blend of several parcels between 25 and 50 years of age dotted around the township of Aguilera. Aguilera means 'Eagles Nest,' the town itself is perched on an outcrop of limestone that overlooks much of the surrounding Duero valley, many of these vineyards sitting above 800m, This extra altitude and the proximity of limestone bedrock to the vines roots helps to stamp these wines with added structure, minerality and freshness.  It’s gently worked, foot-stomped on lots of whole bunches to create an elegant, crunchy and bright version of Ribera del Duero. The influence of the region and the nature of the local Tempranillo clone impart a generous texture and lush blue fruit over the top of that limestone and altitude derived finish. ALIMENTARIA

  10. Victoria Ordonez Camarolos tinto 2018
    Victoria Ordonez Camarolos tinto 2018
Wine has been part of Victoria Ordóñez’s life for as long as she can remember. Her father, José María Ordóñez, was a pioneer of the Spanish wine industry, distributing fine wines across the Province of Malaga since the ’50s. Although Victoria’s own professional career took off in a different direction – she studied to be a doctor and has a PhD in Medicine – in 2004 she decided to enter the wine business, initially combining it with her work as a health service administrator.
Victoria admits that she owes everything to the Austrian oenologist Alois Kracher, with whom she worked side by side making Málaga wines until his death in 2007. It was at this point that her career took a fresh turn as she decided to focus exclusively on what had become her passion – the world of wine.
Tasting: Bright red fruits, fennel, and other Mediterranean herbs, chocolate, and violet aromas. Maroon color and fine tannins lend a pleasing structure. Vibrant with red berries and spicy flavors, the wine is at once concentrated and fresh. Beautiful silkiness and great finesse with a very fresh finish.

  11. Artuke Pies Negros Tempranillo Rioja 2021
Artuke Pies Negros Tempranillo Rioja 2021
Artuke make this wine from five separate plots, planted on limestone and clay at around 550 metres altitude dotted around the town of Abalos, just to the south of their 'Grand Cru' Escolladero site. It bursts with freshness and lively acidity, with a core of cool blackberry fruit. There's plenty of structure here too, thanks to the proximity of limestone to the top soil in foothills of the Cantabrian mountains which shows the serious, age-worthy Rioja side of Rioja Alavesa, even in the modern-terroist frame. 12. Artuke Finca de los Locos Rioja 2021
Artuke Finca de los Locos Rioja 2021
Finca de Los Locos is an old, single vineyard wine grown high on slopes of the Cantabrian mountians north of the town of Banos. Arturo and Kike de Miguel’s grandfather planted the vines in the 1950s, though other farmers of the day thought he was mad to work such a difficult, rock-strewn slope when so much land was available on the flat plains of the Rioja Valley floor. Sixty years later however, this single parcel is consistently producing some of the finest examples of terroir-focused wine in the region. Made with 90% Tempranillo and 10% Graciano, Finca de Los Locos is black-fruited, decidedly cool climate and massively over delivers for the price. ALIMENTARIA

  13. Toma Tinto Tempranillo Grenache 2021
    Toma Tinto Tempranillo Grenache 2021
The Toma Tinto is made by the legends at Bodegas Nekeas. While they are kinda Garnacha experts they are also bloody good at making wine. So good that importer Will Dyer of La Carta wines asked them if they could make him something special just for the Aussie markers and something special they did.

So, they didn't break too far from what they know best with this 50/50 garnacha tempranillo blend and they delivered a thirst quenching, showstopping bbq stunner here. Incredibly the winery have sourced fruit from several high altitude vineyards in Navarra exposed to the cooling reaches of the Pyreneese mountains and breezes of the Atlantic ocean.

Black raspberry, bing cherry, some red licorice a little sweet spice and a menagerie of amaro like spices and herbs. There is a lovely waft of charry earth that sets of the sweet fruited nose and gives it real interest. A lovely combo dark, dry herbs, crushed berries and an earthy note that trails off on the close. Looks a good chunk more serious than the label might suggest. Great stuff

  14. Bodegas Care Tinto Sobre Lias Garnacha Syrah 2022
Bodegas Care Tinto Sobre Lias Garnacha Syrah 2022
Bodegas Care is a young but quality conscious operation making some absolutely cracking drops from in and around their home in Aragon northwest Spain. With state of the art facilities and vineyards sitting at 600 - 800 metre they are capturing the best of the region in a pure and fresh style that avoids the tricked-up commercial styles that often make their way overseas instead relying on high quality fruit and quality driven production.

Intense bramble and wild forest fruits on the nose with lifted violet and gentle white pepper spice that accents the sweet fruits perfectly. Juicy mulberry and smashed blackberry with a little ferrous earthiness that offset the sweet fruits. Lush and easy going but still with a little snap.of acidity to round it all out nicely.

  15. Chaffey Bros La Conquista Tempranillo Grenache Graciano 2022
Chaffey Bros La Conquista Tempranillo Grenache Graciano 2022
A vibrant, crunchy blend of tempranillo, graciano and garnacha. A joy to drink with its spicy red and dark berry and plum fruits, hints of souky spice, dried citrus rind and pressed wildflowers and fine, sandy tannin base. Bright, with just the right dosage of slurpiness and lots of enjoyment in each glass. DAVE BROOKES, Halliday Wine Companion

We absolutely love what is going on at Chaffey Bros. We have always been fans of the wines and recently we tired through the whole range and were, unsurprisingly, thoroughly impressed. The Chaffey boys don't own any fruit and this works to their advantage being able to source the best old vine material and best plots gives them an edge over mother nature while allowing access to some awesome fruit. They have long-term relationships with some of the best growers throughout the region and they understand each plot as intimately as if they were growing it themselves.

This is approx. 65% Barossa tempranillo, 25% old vine Barossa grenache, and 10% graciano from Eden Valley.

Palacios Remondo La Montesa 2020 375ml
Medium ruby hue, with a bright and racy nose that’s full of pretty berries, redcurrants, fresh strawberries and potpourri. Medium-bodied and naturally juicy on the palate, showing lots of crunch and drinkability. Fresh, transparent and silky. Drink or hold. JAMES SUCKLING

2020 is a powerful vintage; it's structured and textured, the oak is very nicely integrated (12 months in barrel, but the powerful wine absorbed it completely), and it's powerful with 14% alcohol and a pH of 3.55, a little darker than in previous years. The tannins are very fine with a subtle chalky texture. There were 2,319 barrels that resulted in 672,000 bottles, 10,000 magnums and some larger and smaller formats. It was bottled from April 2022. 17. Avaniel Tinto Ribera del Duero 2022
Avaniel Tinto Ribera del Duero 2022

Bodegas Monteabellón is located in the heart of the Ribera del Duero with 52 hectares of vineyards (mainly Tempranillo) around the township of Nava de Roa. Isaac Fernandez, nephew of the legendary Vega Sicilia ex- winemaker, Marino Garcia, is the inspiration behind this relatively new venture.

The production at the winery is a thoroughly modern affair that draws on nearly 140 hectares of vineyards. The plots are spread over the Ribera, Rioja and Rueda with the mainstay wines those from their excellent Ribera holdings. Avaniel is made from grapes from one or the freshest young plots called "Los Miles". It is also one of the youngest vineyard with vines within 6 and 10 years.

This is the crunchiest version of this we have seen in a while and its all the better for it. It's still Ribera del Duero all the way but just done with a little extra skip in its step. A little black raspberry and a morello cherry to the fore that gives way to some subtle inky earthy elements that speaks of its rocky home on the Duero River. Really silky fruits this vintage with all the elements tightly woven together while still delivering a generous and plush palate. Some fine crunchy tannins scream for a bit of jamon or grilled meats.
