  1. Esporao Quatro Castas 4 2015
    Esporao Quatro Castas 4 2015
Since it was founded in 1267, the boundaries of Herdade do Esporão have remained virtually unchanged. Located 180 kms from Lisbon, deep in the Alentejo, in Reguengos de Monsaraz.
The team is led by David Baverstock. Ex - Roseworthy and Penfolds before heading to Portugal to work at icon wineries such as Graham's, Quinta do Crasto and has taken Esporao to the title of Winery of the Year twice and has himself been named Winemaker of the Year twice, including this year.

Poor, stony soils and a tough summer climate that brings hot days and cool nights, followed by a harsh winter. Esporão currently has 194 different varieties planted, of which 37 account for virtually all production.

This is always a blend of the 4 best grapes of any vintage and changes from year to year in both compsition and percentages.

  2. 4 Kilos 'Motor' Callet 2020
    4 Kilos 'Motor' Callet 2020
4 Kilos, the project created by Francesc Grimalt and Sergio Caballero as a scion of Ànima Negra in Mallorca in 2006 is the quality leader of the island. They have around 15 hectares of vineyards on the island, and many of the vines grow in what is locally known as "call vermell" soil (ferrous red clay with limestone and small to medium-size rocks). 2019 was a ripe and low-yielding vintage that delivered concentrated wines, while 2018 was more balanced and typically Mediterranean. 2019 was quite concentrated, a year with a lot of color and powerful wines. 2018 was much cooler, and the wines are fresher and transparent. In fact, 2018 seems like a superb vintage here, possibly the best they have produced to date. 2020 looks like a very good vintage, a year without much heat, wet and with some challenges and an early vintage. 4. Suertes del Marques 7 Fuentes Tinto 2020
Suertes del Marques 7 Fuentes Tinto 2020

Village wine. Suertes del Marqués village red is a blend of Listán Negro and Tintilia. The style of García’s entry-level red has evolved considerably since the early days. Today it’s a prettier, lighter-bodied and more thirst-quenching wine. The main component remains the wildly aromatic Listán Negro with a small portion of Tintilia, entirely fermented in small tanks with indigenous yeast and a short, gentle maceration.

The name refers to the seven climats in the D.O. of Valle de la Orotava. Today Suertes draws the raw materials from 35 separate plots, from vines ranging from 10 to 100 years old, at a range of altitudes (up to 800 metres) on the slopes of Mount Teide. The Listán Negro is grown mainly in cordón trenzado, while the Tintilia (from the Bocanegra plot) is trellised to the espaldera system. Each parcel begins vinification separately in stainless steel before blending and aging in small concrete tanks (70%) and mature French demi-muids (30%).

  5. Nossa Calcário Baga 2021
    Nossa Calcário Baga 2021

100% Baga – Chalky clay mid-slopes with eastern orientation to the sun and a very intense Atlantic influence (only 15 km from the ocean). For this wine the grapes come from different small plots of Pato’s oldest vineyards (80 –130 years). These 3 centenary vineyards were purchased already some years ago and are fully converted to biodynamics.

The bunches are handpicked and hand-selected from the centenary vineyards in Bairrada (3 to 4 bunches/vine). Partly de-stemmed, fermented in open oak lagares with some extraction (pigeage). After the fermentation the wine is aged in 500 –600 used pipes and tonel (big cask) for 18 months. Prior to release, the wine further aged in bottle for 2 months.

  7. Domaine Plageoles Gaillac Le Braucol 2020
Domaine Plageoles Gaillac Le Braucol 2020

Red. Organic. Braucol is more commonly known in southwest France as Fer Servadou (or Mansois in Marcillac). This bottling comes from a parcel of 30- to 35-year-old vines grown on clay and limestone soils. You could think of it as a Gaillac Pinot or Beaujolais with some sappy stems—but of course, it has its own irresistible personality that reflects both this unique grape and its singular terroir. Florent Plageoles now vinifies this wine with 50% carbonic, and the result is all the brighter and more gluggable for it. Yields are kept low, bringing flavour and intensity, and the aging occurs only in cement tanks with no filtration.

This is another vibrant, layered and juicy wine where Asian spice and fennel notes mingle with velveteen wild red berries and a limestone freshness ensuring outstanding balance. Although light on its feet, it does not skimp on flavour and texture. It finishes with accomplishment and class. “Du glouglou pour le printemps” (for glugging in the springtime), says Bernard Plageoles, father of Florent and Romain. But why stop at springtime?

  8. Domaine Plageoles Gaillac Contre Pied 2019
Domaine Plageoles Gaillac Contre Pied 2019

Red. Organic. To be contre-pied is to be diametrically opposed to something. In this case, this carbonic Duras is the opposite of the rustic, sleepy wines associated with this variety (and plenty of Gaillac rouge in general). This wine originates from a block of clay/limestone soil in Cahuzac-sur-Vère. The winemaking takes in a short carbonic maceration followed by six months aging in concrete tank.

Florent Plageoles told us that he felt that Duras grapes would take to the Beaujolais treatment, et voila, Contre Pied has now become a mainstay of the Plageoles roster. Expect crunchy acidity and thirst-quenching satisfaction—sappy red fruits, invigorating and tensile acid and soft grainy tannins surround a plump, cherry-like weight. Hints of dark chocolate and spice round out the steely skeleton. In short, a super delicious and unique carbo-styled red.
