RED WINE

An overtly floral-suffused nose displays a lovely array of spice elements on the essence of red berry fruit aromas. I very much like the mid-palate mouthfeel of the sappy medium-bodied flavors that terminate in a powerful, rustic and mocha-inflected finish. This is quite a robust Vosne villages that will require at least some patience. BURGHOUND

Always one of the wines of the range. Exhibits all the kirsch cherry and silken texture of a classic Vosne with the addition of some nice Asian spice coming from the 50% whole cluster. MICHAEL McNAMARA

A fresh, pure and layered nose consists of liqueur-like dark berry fruit, plum, violet, earth and touches of spice. There is excellent richness to the slightly more refined medium weight flavors that coat the palate with dry extract where the supporting structure arrives all at once on the grippy and mildly drying finish. I suspect that this will round into form once the sulfur addition is more completely integrated. BURGHOUND

I haven't always been the biggest fan of Nicolas' version of Chaignots - although I love the vineyard with its the nod to the "silk" of Vosne a nice counterpoint to the rusticity of Nuits. This year this is a beautiful example and the best I've seen from him. MICHAEL McNAMARA

Kooyong, owned by Giorgio and Dianne Gjergja, released its first wines in 2001. The vineyard is planted to pinot noir (20ha), chardonnay (10.4ha) and, more recently, pinot gris (3ha). In July '15, following the departure of Sandro Mosele, his assistant of six years, Glen Hayley, was appointed to take his place. The Kooyong wines are made at the state-of-the-art winery of Port Phillip Estate, also owned by the Gjergjas. JAMES HALLIDAY

It’s a wine defined by its shape. It angles towards the finish and then pushes on out; the pulleys are in place from the beginning. Twiggy spice, a general woody/savouriness, dark cherry and a light coating of cedar. I wouldn’t call it taut but I would call it firm and indeed strict. It’s as though the wine’s flavour run on converging rails. It’ll be a better drink in a year or more. CAMPBELL MATTINSON

Very ripe yet reasonably fresh aromas slowly reveal nuances of cassis, red cherry and a whiff of wood. The earthy and vibrant medium weight flavors possess excellent density, indeed even opulence, while managing to remain relatively refined on the ever-so-slightly warm and austere finale. Lovely and firm enough to reward 12 to 15 years of cellaring.

Lake Hayes Pinot Noir is named after the namesake lake at the foot of Queenstown's Wakatipu basin. One of the most photographed lakes in the country and a striking place to make wine. Made by the crew at Amisfield, just down the road, so you know it will over-deliver and it does.

Forward and plush in style but with of that Otago grunt that kicks along into the more serious side of thing. Damson plums and purple berry fruits with velvety tannins that ultimately deliver and immediately enjoyable wine. PWS

The 2019 Beaune "Hommage à Françoise Potel" 1er Cru is named after Nicolas Potel's late mother and is a blend of five Premier Crus. It has vibrant red cherries, kirsch and cassis on a nose that is more opulent than Les Teurons. The palate is well balanced with succulent red berry fruit. Fine tannins frame the peppery finish, which fans out nicely. Lovely length here. Very fine.  NEAL MARTIN, www.vinousmedia.com

Part of our new high-altitude Beechworth range. A brand-new Pinot Noir for us. An earlier drinking blend comprised of sites across Beechworth, predominantly from our new high-altitude Palmer vineyard in the heart of Stanley. Selections from Brunnen and Indigo vineyards provide a lovely combination of spice and plush red fruit.

A cool growing season, with ample time for flavour development. Whole berry ferment with gentle maceration, this wine is concentrated and complex yet shows the bright acidity and delicacy of high-altitude Pinot Noir. Savoury spice and tart red fruit softened by a subtle 15% new oak component.

2020 is the first release of this premium pinot. Downer has worked closely with three different vineyards all on the Western ridge on predominantly east-facing slopes. One vineyard that Downer has been taking fruit from since 2016 has consistently stood out. 85% of The Apollo 2020 comes from this site, located in Piccadilly just opposite the Mt Lofty Botanic Garden. The understudy source is in Ashton, and contributes more underfloor, forest notes to offset the Piccadilly vineyard's red-fruited intensity.

On the nose this is brimming with aromatics that lure you in- dark spiced black cherries, maraschino cherries, wet earth and rosemary. The core is compact with great intensity and depth that slowly unfurls with a little air. A beautiful interplay of savoury earth and fresh fruit is apparent. Its spine of fine silky tannins holds a lovely line of tension in its youth. This is so tightly wound at the moment, and promises a bounty of treasures if you can put it away for a few years. Notes of freshly turned earth, floral and underbrush add breadth to the various dark berry fruit scents. There is again excellent volume and mid-palate density to the sappy medium weight flavors that possess classic Nuits muscle though perhaps just a bit less rusticity than usual. As ever, this is one of Potel's best wines. It is quintessentially Nuits St Georges. Earth aromas lay next to red-moving-to-black fruits. Floral lift but it's more red petals than violets. The usual hint of dourness you love in Nuits. Red fruit attack, minerality and energy to burn with a more muscular texture than the Volnay. It's always a wine that starts to show it's true colours after five years. This is no different. Excellent. MICHAEL MCNAMARA, PWS

This is aromatically similar to the Vosne villages with just a bit more wood influence. The super-sleek and sophisticated middle weight flavors are even more intensely mineral-driven while displaying excellent length on the youthfully austere finale. This is really quite classy though unlike the villages it is sufficiently structured that it will definitely need at least 5 to 7 years first and reward a decade plus. "Outstanding" BURGHOUND

My lady asked me "what are you going to write about it" she's not really a wine nerd… anyway, my reply was "I don't know, it's such a unique wine it's really hard to get across to people what it's like". Let's give it a go...
There's a little of that soft drink thing here too. I say that because I don't know what else to use, it's like really good root beer. Sassafras's. wild herbs. Brambly fruit. It's breezy, airy and cool. It feels mountainous in so much as it smells so fresh with hints of underbrush.
Structurally there's just enough tannin to stop it feeling soft. Just enough fruit to keep it from feeling light on. Just enough acidity to keep it clear and correct. It all just works. With air it tightens up a bit and gains a bit more oomph, suggests that a couple of years in the bottle will do it good but it isn't necessary by any means. An old colleague of ours, who met us there on our last visit, used to prattle on about this wine as if it were a cure all, a tonic to ease what ails you. Maybe he was right. Certainly made me feel good. ROSCOE

From the Northburn Station vineyard on a lakeside terrace, this sees no whole-bunch or new oak. Only 20 barrels were made.

This is a fragrant and lithely composed pinot with an underlying power that drives the wine. Its sinewy structure is laden with maraschino cherries, plums are rosemary tones. While it feels light and fluid on the palate, it doesn't forsake flavour. Its perceived fragility is beguiling. Fine and sleek tannins sign off the wine.  An eloquent expression of Central Otago pinot. GABRIELLE POY, PWS

This Savigny is the result of five small assembled parcels between 30 and 60 years old and is a very pleasant vintage when young, which marries together fruitiness and finesse.

Soft wood and a top note of menthol are present on the plum and sauvage scented nose. The racy, intense and again attractively textured medium-bodied flavors possess both fine depth and length on the youthfully austere finale. This is a lovely Gevrey villages that should reward mid-term keeping. "Outstanding" BURGHOUND

Unwinding in the glass with aromas of dark berries, cassis, rich spices and loamy soil, the 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes is medium to full-bodied, layered and fleshy, with an ample core of lively, concentrated fruit and a textural, enveloping profile. This elegant, gourmand wine will offer a broad drinking window. WILLIAM KELLEY

Offering up aromas of plums, raspberries and spices, the 2019 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Gruenchers is medium to full-bodied, fleshy and gourmand, with a ripe core of fruit, succulent acids and fine, youthfully chalky tannins that assert them selves on the finish. WILLIAM KELLEY

Here the nose is relatively firmly reduced so be sure to give it some air if you're tempted to try a bottle young in the interest of science. There is excellent size, weight and mid-palate density to the rich but nicely detailed, muscular and powerful flavors that also culminate in a youthfully austere, lingering and structured finale. The 2019 Pinot Noir Mays Canyon is another of the more accessible wines in this range. Hints of blood orange and cinnamon lend an attractive, exotic flair. Bright acids perk up the dark cherry, plum, cedar and pipe tobacco flavors nicely. Understated and gracious to the core, the Mays Canyon Pinot is all class and ready to deliver pleasure with minimal cellaring. ANTONIO GALLONI

We've featured the wines of under the Amen Break label a lot here and there is a reason why - they rock. Hailing from a small village in east of Australia called New Zealand the Clonal Brothers are Matt and Steve Harrop and together they are a lethal winemaking combination. One of the most sampled drum patterns music nerds will recognise this as a 6- to 7-second (4-bar) drum solo performed by Gregory Sylvester "G. C.". Coleman in the song "Amen, Brother" performed by the 1960s funk and soul outfit The Winstons.

There's certainly a bustle in the hedgerow here, with blackberry, black raspberry, leaf, dried roses and pencils. Medium-bodied, cool acidity, a distinctly 'mineral' feel, intense small berried dark fruit, graphite tannin, a little sundried tomato and raspberry pip, and a spicy and gently bitter amaro/sappy finish of excellent length. Bright violet. Zesty red and blue fruits on the nose, along with a hint of spiciness. Taut and focused in style, offering bitter cherry and dark fruit flavors and a deeper licorice nuance. Shows firm grip and tension on the finish, which leaves behind a hint of botanical herbs. ANTONIO GALLONI, Vinous

Less airy, a little less open but seemingly the nose that’s the most complete – if not largest – the finest of perfume here. Mouth-filling, structural too, almost the first sensation of a little tannic grain – almost. This the wine that’s most tight at the core but I hazard to say, possibly the most complete here too. This will be great wine but it will require more time than the previous cuvée to come around. Try after 5 but better after 10 years! BILL NANSON, Burgundy Report

The nose has a deep and dark winter stone fruit note. The palate is a woven series of dark plum and cloves. Nelson pinot celebrates an underlying umami or savoury note and this is no exception. "It caresses the mouth  with its round, chocolatey tannins that leave you licking your cheeks. If KFC’s chicken is finger licking good,  Tom’s is palate-licking good. Here’s a collaboration between NSW Sexyboys Will Gilbert (of Mudgee) and Angus Vinden (of Hunter). It’s a 50/50 blend of Hunter Shiraz (1968 block Somerset) and Orange Pinot Noir. Only older oak. 400 magnums filled, and magnums only.

Smoky, spicy, hazelnut, cherry and raspberry, mint, bright and a bit tangy. Medium-bodied, cranberry acidity, fresh red fruits, a slight fenugreek/aniseed bitterness/perfume thing, frisky and slightly stalky, strawberry and spice on a long cool finish, graphite tannin trailing. Deep Ruby hue. Fragrant aromas of wild raspberry, dark plum, sandalwood, vanilla and sea spray. Flavours of  silken and bright wild forest fruits and graphite. Supple and elastic mid pallet tannins that are contained with bright and pure minerality. Typical white rock tension creates a long and vibrant finish.

Three organic and biodynamically certified hillside vineyards on the warm northern slopes of the Waipara Valley, North Canterbury. The vines grow through a diverse range of clay and limestone soils to produce intense wines completely expressive of each site. The family recently purchased a beautiful 7 hectare hillside vineyard names Damsteep, 10km north of Black Estate. It has quiclkly  become the jewe in their crown and rightly so.

A little Languedoc love here. We were suitably impressed by this littles number when this along with its brother and sister wine crossed our path. The philosophy here is to create a classic range of Southern French wines, produced by the enigmatic Château Canet estate in the Languedoc, Côte Lavande is supposed to be fun and care-free.

Many shades of black fruits here with a delicate hint of liquorice and wafts of savoury dried herbs. Medium pushing into the lower side of full there is a seriousness about the wine with its fine sinewy structure and softly brooding palate that’s really appealing. That sweet mulberry fruit shines through while everything is nicely in its place. Smart winemaking here that really shines.

The 2020 Pommard En Boeuf, matured in 50% new oak, is quite backward on the nose and demanded encouragement from the glass, gradually, reluctantly unfolding with slightly earthy black fruit, hints of Earl Grey and tobacco. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red berry fruit, fine acidity, touches of sage and white pepper, the 50% whole bunch beautifully integrated on the finish. What a lovely Pommard, one that is Premier Cru level in all but name. NEAL MARTIN, vinous.com

13 barrels made, using one third new wood, two thirds one year old and vinified with 50% whole bunches. The lieu dit will be marked on the label this year. Glowing purple. A lively and delicious fruit, supple, with a gorgeous ripe raspberry, carries through really well, elegance and grip with a fair amount of new wood, which it can carry. JASPER MORRIS MW

2021 was a vintage of exceptional quality.  A wet winter, mild spring and temperate summer produced wines that will live long in the memory and in the cellar.  The wines are fine, focused, beautifully balanced and above all, utterly delicious. This Single Vineyard Pinot Noir is intense and complex, super fine and silky. 

A bright and dense crimson colour. The aromas are intense and complex for a young wine - red fruits, raspberry, red currant with dark cherries, coupled with a floral and spicy note. The palate is super fine and silky with layers of flavour and texture leading to a long and bold finish. Cellar for at least five years, and preferably more than 10. From the organically farmed Vecino Vineyard, this is a 50/50 blend of Pommard and Dijon 115 clones. 70% whole cluster.

Each year the names changes, though the wine is fairly consistent. This year it is called The Center of Gravity.

I always think this site suffers a little from the "Rousseau Effect" - not that Rousseau, the Domaine - in that it doesn't seem to be lavished with attention from the consumers as does its neighbour Clos St Jacques. Though the vineyards are, in my mind, potentially equal. In the right hands Cazetieres is a superb Premier Cru and is often one of the best wines produced at Faiveley.

Here the wood regimen is no longer subtle though it stops short of masking the beautifully layered aromas of plum, spice, dark currant and freshly turned earth. The highly energetic and delineated middle weight plus flavors exude noticeable minerality on the powerful and focused finish that displays outstanding depth and persistence. Moreover, the finish really fans out as it sits on the palate. "Sweet Spot, Outstanding" BURGHOUND

The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Cazetiers comes from Faiveley's substantial four-hectare parcel. I find this has more gumption and detail than the Lavaux Saint-Jacques at the moment. The nose features layers of blackberry, raspberry and crushed stone aromas, and the sweet, candied palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannin. Blood orange and quince infuse the red fruit toward the finish. Excellent. NEAL MARTIN

Since the takeover of Domaine Dupont-Tisserandot, Faiveley now have 4ha of Cazetiers spread across numerous plots. Rich dense purple with a heady nose of riper fruit including some black notes. Juicy dark raspberry notes, well spread across the palate, a few minerals at the back. Love the aftertaste (95) JASPER MORRIS MW

Ooh, deep, aromatic, complex, oaked. Full but fresh, mobile, good but not excessive energy - it's a new barrel so there's some of that too - but this is really a great wine, textured, and delicious. A wall of finishing flavour. BILL NANSON

Dessus de Montchenevoy is located above the renowned Savigny 1er Cru, Aux Guettes. It's a west-facing site at an altitude of 350m and is surrounded by forest. The altitude and cool air from the forest help moderate the climate of the site, resulting in a longer ripening period. The plot is organically farmed, and its isolation from other vines allows Tomiko and her team to limit spraying.

5 Star Wine. Tucked into the forest, they have had to do the most work here in terms of the life of the very thin soil. The cooler site makes this even more floral, really lovely. So juicy and so lifted at the same time. Racily saline at the finish. JASPER MORRIS MW

Slightly more deeply pitched aromas are comprised by notes of violet, plum and dark raspberry. The texture of the sweet, delicious and caressing medium-bodied flavors contrast markedly with that of the firm and slightly chewy finish that offers excellent depth and persistence. This isn't especially refined but it works anyway plus it's a wine that should repay 7 to 10 years of cellaring. OUTSTANDING. BURGHOUND

This is the first wine to display any appreciable reduction and it's enough to blur the nuance of what are clearly ripe dark berry aromas. Otherwise, there is very good vibrancy and cut to the delicious medium weight flavors that possess solid mid-palate density before culminating in a rustic, powerful and impressively long and complex finish. Like the Aux Croix, this isn't refined but it is balanced all the same. This is one to look for if you have the patience. OUTSTANDING, TOP VALUE. BURGHOUND

Dark fresh purple, plenty of energy here. A minor reduction but nothing to worry about. A beautiful swelling fruit on the palate, succulent but not lush nor unduly ripe, fresher at the finish, the whole bunches doing their thing. Around one third whole bunch. An elegant, pure and airy nose freely expresses the blend of red and dark berries, violet, lavender and rose petal. A touch of earth can be found on the delicious and bright middle weight flavors that exude an appealing minerality on the sappy finish that tightens up noticeably. An extremely ripe yet again, still fresh nose offers up its aromas of mocha, poached plum and black cherry jam. The rich, round and quite supple medium-bodied flavors immediately firm up on the youthfully austere, palate coating and lightly mineral infused finale. This firmly structured effort is going to need at least some patience as it's presently quite tightly wound. Outstanding, BURGHOUND
