  1. Stephane Aviron Beaujolais Village 2021
    Stephane Aviron Beaujolais Village 2021
Stephane's family has been wheeling and dealing in Beaujolais for generations. Based in Fleurie, his father owned an oenological laboratory and worked as a wine broker where, after completing his studies, Stephane returned to work in the family business as a wine consultant and a winemaker in Chénas. His experience there and history in the region brings a depth of knowledge and intimate detail of the terroirs he now works. That, when combined with Stephane's obvious talent makes for a formidable combination.

Black cherry and bright raspberry with a hit of heady, whole peppercorn spice, touch of cola and lovely burst of five spice that drives the inviting nose home. Super crunchy, raspberry fruit layered in with fine slippery tannins. Bursting with red fruit flavour, bright and bouncy. It's fine and tight with a lovely core of fruit that feels light and airy and at once concentrated and precise in its delivery. A fine Villages.

The appellation of Côte de Brouilly sits on the high slopes of the extinct volcano Mont Brouilly and is surrounded by the larger appellation of Brouilly. This wine brings together the broody darker elements of the volcanic soils finesse by the cool, hillside sites it clings to. It opens with rich red and dark berry fruit, ground and toasted spices and earthy tone that washes over the fruit slowly as you swirl in your glass. Its concentrated and richly fruited but that is all backed by some fine cut tannins that string the dark fruit together, as it sashays  across the palate with cherry, plums and black forest fruits. It feels serious but in typical Aviron style still feels light on its feet.

  3. Stephane Aviron Beaujolais Morgon Cote du Py 2021
Stephane Aviron Beaujolais Morgon Cote du Py 2021
Old vines, fermented traditionally (no carbonic) and aged in a bunch of old wood. It's pure, energetic and unbelievably slippery.

Lifted black and red cherry fruit, dark raspberry, mixed ground spice and a pretty lilt to the nose. It at first seems like a combo of the Brouilly and Villages with a lovely mix of dark and light. The palate is snappy and fresh, etched with fine-boned tannin a wonderful and incisive mineral spike. Lots of energy here and a nice burst of mineral fruit at the end that carries the palate along. Great looking Morgon with a fresh, mineral-driven edge.

  4. Frederic Berne Beaujolais Lantignie 2020
    Frederic Berne Beaujolais Lantignie 2020
Freddy himself, a tall Frenchman with an incredibly gentle and humble demeanour that is always welcoming. His wines are vibrant, pure and terroir specific which are all the joys of a great Burgundian producer but with the price tag of Beaujolais!

This is off a single site of pink granite soils. A slightly more broody take with black cherry, cassis and wild herb. Plenty of vibrant fruit that starts high-toned and with nice crunch that slowly builds into a more darker and spice laden profile. Some fine grainy tannins give this a nice backbone to carry the plump fruit. Deep-set but light on its feet at the same time. There is pedigree and poise here.

  5. Te Mata Gamay Noir 2022
    Te Mata Gamay Noir 2022
An electric, candy-apple red, fresh, and full of appeal, Estate Gamay Noir ’22 charms with intense wild strawberry, bubble-gum aromatics, and notes of ripe watermelon and red cherry. The palate is goose-down soft, creamy, and lightly spiced with clove, anise, and cinnamon. Estate Gamay Noir ’22 is a marriage of tempting textures, and summer-bright, ultra-ripe, red-fruit freshness.

  6. Domaine des Marrans Beaujolais Fleurie Clos du Pavillon 2021
Domaine des Marrans Beaujolais Fleurie Clos du Pavillon 2021
Light-footed and lively with crisp acidity, this 2021 Fleurie has plenty of strawberry and garden herb aromas. The rather firm, clean finish suggests this has some years ahead of it. Drink or hold. STUART PIGGOT, jamessuckling.com

Bursting with aromas of cherries, berries and plums, the 2021 Fleurie Les Marrans is medium-bodied, lively and succulent, with tangy acids and a fine-boned, pretty profile that offers considerable charm in its lighter-weight format. WILLIAM KELLEY, The Wine Advocate

  7. Domaine Chermette Beaujolais Les Griottes 2022
Domaine Chermette Beaujolais Les Griottes 2022
The perfume fills up the nostrils. It smells good. Appetising. Bright cherry, sweet orange, raspberries. They are on the firm side, crunchy, fresh. Damp earth and violets lay underneath. Then chewy texture with wet clay tannins fills the mouth. It’s just pure cherry juice that makes for an excellent thirst quencher and I’m pretty sure it’s also good for your health. Domaine Chermette Beaujolais Fleurie Poncie 2022
From pink granite, 45-year-old vines, whole bunch. Rose perfume and orange blossom in the opening act. Is it a cliché that Fleurie smells floral? Don’t even get me started on ‘feminine’. But it does. And there’s also a pink grapefruit twist lingering high, acidity is something of a highlight here, following that grapefruit theme, the whole palate is lifted and ethereal. Granitic dust of tannins on a bitter wave, meaty finish with a lingering cherry. Very good. KASIA SOBIESIAK, The Wine Front

  9. Daniel Bouland Morgon Corcelette 2022
    Daniel Bouland Morgon Corcelette 2022
The "regular" bottling of 2022 Corcelette from Monsieur Bouland is another lovely example of this very strong vintage. It is deep, bright and sappy, offering up a nose of red and black cherries, sweet cranberries, vinesmoke, gamebird, a dollop of fresh thyme and a very pretty base of soil tones. On the palate the wine is vibrant, full-bodied and deep at the core, with a fine foundation of soil, bright acids, moderate tannins and great focus and grip on the long, complex and beautifully balanced finish. Of all of Daniel's outstanding 2022s, this is certainly the first cuvée I would be reaching for to drink now, as it has a sense of wide open generosity that is not evident with most of his other, more structured wines from this vintage. This is not to say that it will not also age long and gracefully, but the regular Corcelette is not going to demand cellaring time before it gives up the goods. 2024-2060. JOHN GILMAN

  10. Daniel Bouland Chiroubles Chatenay 2022
    Daniel Bouland Chiroubles Chatenay 2022
The Chiroubles "Chatenay" from Domaine Bouland is made from vines that are at least forty years of age, with some significantly older vines also to be found here.
The 2022 Chatenay is a very youthful wine and is still quite marked by its stem tones, but these are augmented by outstanding depth of fruit and a superb base of soil. The bouquet wafts from the glass in a complex blend of red and black cherries, fresh thyme, bonfire, gamebird, black tea, brown spices, dark soil tones and a topnote of peonies. On the palate the wine is deep, complex and full, with stunning depth at the core, great soil inflection, ripe tannins and impeccable balance on the long, youthful and extremely promising finish. This will need at least a few years in the cellar to properly soften up its tannins, but it is going to be brilliant once it is ready to drink. 2030-2065+. JOHN GILMAN

  11. Daniel Bouland Cote de Brouilly Cuvee Melanie 2022
Daniel Bouland Cote de Brouilly Cuvee Melanie 2022
Named after Daniel Bouland’s daughter, Cuvée Mélanie is drawn from a small, steep, half-hectare plot on the slopes of Mont Brouilly. The 70-year-old vines are rooted on the area’s famous terres bleu (blue-tinted volcanic soils) within the lieu-dit of Tête Noire vines, directly above Château Thivin. It’s this volcanic blue schist that lends the wines of this Cru their unique mineral profile. Bouland’s 0.8-hectare parcel is planted at 12,000 vines per hectare. As with all Bouland’s cuvées, this is a wine born from low yields and natural, whole-bunch fermentation.

Daniel Bouland's Cuvée Mélanie bottling of Côte de Brouilly is an old vine cuvée, as all of these vines are more than seventy years-old.
The 2022 iteration is simply a brilliant young wine, offering up a deep, pure and sappy bouquet of black cherries, pomegranate, a touch of smoked meats, dark soil tones, just a hint of fresh thyme, sweet stem tones that add a lovely undertow of savoriness, roses and a smoky topnote. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, vibrant and complex, with a beautiful core of fruit, lovely soil inflection, ripe, buried tannins, tangy acids and excellent 70 focus and balance on the long and utterly complete finish. This is eminently drinkable in its youthful charm, but has the underlying chassis of suave tannins to age long and gracefully and will be a far more impressive drink five to ten years down the road. 2023-2060.
