Le Battistelle is simply one of the Soave Classico’s best producers. They have some of the most incredible hand tended terrace vineyards with vines up to 130 years old. There are records of the Battistelle vineyard going back to 1644. Fantastic volcanic subsoils plus the estate is classified “Viticoltura Eroica” or Heroic Viticulture which appears on the label of the Battistelle cuvee. It stands for the hard work that production of these wines requires.

Owned by Gelmino and Cristina Dal Bosco who after working for larger co-operatives in the region passionately wanted their estate, and started in 2002 under the Le Batistelle label. They own just over 9 hectares (100% Garganega) divided across four small plots all situated in the hills of Brognoligo.

The 2022 Soave Classico Eroica lifts from the glass with a savory blend of dried peaches and apricots, complemented by hints of fresh mint and crushed stone. It’s soothingly round in character, resonating with ripe orchard fruits and citrus-tinged inner florals over a core of tantalizing acidity. 2023 was a brilliant year for Cabernet Sauvignon and proved perfect ripening for Cabernet Sauvignon and merlot and Cullen vineyard. Made from 100% bio-dynamically certified fruit a blend of 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Merlot,1% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Malbec has created a wine of great depth supported by delicious fine grained tannins.

The wine was matured in barriques of which 20% were new. CULLEN

The grapes for this wine come about 82% from our own block in Mitch Patin’s Lloyd Vineyard on West Soda Rock Road planted in 1998 towards the southern end of Alexander Valley on the banks of the Russian River. 11% comes from the Larrick Vineyard that we farm, and the remaining 7% is Malbec from J. Rickard in Cloverdale.

As always, this wine was produced more like a Pinot more than a Cab. Fermented in open-tops with native yeasts, punched down by hand, and racked to barrels before being aged in 2nd fill French oak barrels for 15 months.

First poured, a ghastly apparition appeared – as if this had been placed in a corset and cinched tight. In a vinous sense, that means decanting or letting this beauty breathe in the glass. It has all the varietal appeal of Margs: its shapely tannins, supple and ever-so-slightly grainy and its savouriness. Throughout its history, the house of Cocchi has periodically produced alternative varieties of its Americano aperitif wine.  Here the wine base is a blend of two aromatic varietals such as Brachetto and Malvasia famous for imparting notes of wild rose and summer berries. These are blended with herbs, fruit and spices, most notably gentian, cinchona and citrus like for the Bianco classic version, but with an extra addition of Ginger and rose petals. Enjoy with soda or tonic and a zest of grapefruit. A Royale sumptuous edition can be made topping it with Sparkling Brachetto d’Acqui DOCG.

Cocchi Americano means much more to Asti than a simple wine made with the infusion of herbs and spices. An aperitif par excellence. Cocchi's is widely regarded as the original Aperitivo Americano, and has been made continuously since 1891 using only natural ingredients. To aromatise the white wine a secret blend of herbs and spices, to name a few, gentian,  cinchona and bitter orange peels, are added to the wine base which is then steeped over a period of time.

In recent years Cocchi Americano has become a cult product in the circle of best sommelier and bartenders of the world. The complexity of this product is the first thing that surprises you. On the nose you initially detect notes of orange zest, orange flower and elderflower before more mature aromas of baked apple and pear drops emerge. Your palate will immediately appreciate the bitter/sweet balance as more bitter notes mingle with honey and citrus flavors, mainly orange and lemon zest. More wine-like characteristics become evident as the flavors develop into a long, vibrant finish, with the bitter and sweet notes remaining fresh until the end.
Serve chilled with ice, a twist of orange peel and a splash of soda.

This wine remains one of the finest values in the Napa Valley and a cool-climate example of the variety, to boot. A deeply coloured wine that exhibits a dazzling array of wildly exotic fruits and herbs as well as the usual stone fruit that I expect from the style. Gloriously perfumed and so enticing. You could wear this as a perfume. People would think you are nuts, but you would smell amazing! Big, super concentrated, it hits your mouth with intent, absolutely engulfing the palate with the same heady array of character that is suggested on the nose. So much weight and richness but there is the sweep of uplifting acidity that washes away any lingering sweetness and leaves your palate feeling refreshed and enlivened. Long and stimulating across its length with a final flourish of citrus like acidity and fine saline edge. This is a wonderful bottle of wine that had me coming back to it over 24 hours or more. Wow, is it salty or is it sweet? The 2017 Recioto di Soave Le Colombare lifts up with dusty yellow flowers, dried tangerine and orange zests complemented by crushed almonds and hints of confectioners' sugar. It's silky-smooth yet not weighty in feel, with zesty citrus and tropical fruits motivated by brilliant acidity. The balance here is unreal, as the 2017 hides its 120 grams of residual sugar very well, maybe too well, making it easy to like but also dangerously easy to drink. A bitter twang of citrus rinds and hints of ginger spice linger. ANTONIO GALLONI

A rapier-like thread of acidity compresses quince, tangerine, tamarind, truffle, cardamon and glazed stone fruits into a ball of such tension and freshness that the finish is not only endless, but uncannily dry. The 2017 Turpino is quite reticent, which is surprising given the style and personality of the year. Black cherry, pine, menthol, licorice and chocolate develop nicely over time. Readers should give the 2017 at least a few years in bottle, as it is not at all ready to drink now. The 2017 embodies the house style at Querciabella these days nicely. 40% Cabernet Franc, 40% Syrah, 20% Merlot grown in a north-facing vineyard in Grossetto in the Maremma. Biodynamically certified. Aged for 16 months in fine- and extra-fine-grained French oak barriques, of which up to 20% were new.
Lustrous deep crimson. Deep red- and dark-fruit nose with hints of dark spice. Savoury rather than sweet or ripe on the nose... Hint of earth and dried moss. Lush red and dark fruit with a muscular structure that is completely integrated with the fruit. Hedonistic, long, and with loads of appeal. Great fun to drink. (17+) WALTER SPELLER MW

Complex and well-structured with baked apple and spice, balanced with firm tannins and cask influence.
