The 2018 Extra-Brut Les Couarres is a dense, potent Champagne. The blend of 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay works so well here. A wine of substance and presence, Les Couarres impresses with its poise more than anything else. White flowers, kirsch, spice, Poire William and crushed rocks lend an exotic flair throughout. I especially admire the precision here. This is beautifully rendered. Dosage is 4-5 grams per liter. Disgorged: February 2023. ANTONIO GALLONI

Tasmania has become such a hot-bed of awesome talent and great wine. As one of Australia's coolest wine growing regions pinot noir and chardonnay have excelled and sparkling wine still proves to be one of its crown jewels. These have been mainstays of the Apple Isle for some time and there looks this to be no stopping the tide of incredible examples of each making their way across the Tasman.

Fast-forward a generation and we are really starting to see what the verdant land can really turn out. In our mind some of the best Euro-styled rieslings are being produced there while the marginal climates and savvy wine-making are turning out some stellar textural pinot gris.

While pinot noir may reign supreme it is other reds like shiraz, that may, in time, prove to be something even more special. Time will tell and while it does we will happily sip our way through all that Tasmania's has to offer.

We start with the NV Delamere sparkling a blend of chard and pinot noir that represents not just some of the oldest plantings in the region but in Tasmania. This is always plays with great harmony structure it gets from the ferrous soils of the region. Textured and fine.

Stefano Lubiano have been making some waves recently with a fantastic set of releases. Their Primavera chard well and over-delivers for the money and we wonder how they can do it at the price they do. Fine and focused but with plenty of palate impact.

Young gun Ricky Evans is making a splash with his modern styled, clean and classic wines. While no doubt his pinots are highly regarded the latest release riesling is an absolute belter. Racy and fresh but with plenty of lush fruit to back it up.

We have two pinot's for the pack and why not? The first is Sailor Seeks horse from Tassies southern most municipality. This revitalised vineyard has been taken to new heights by Gilli and Paul Lipsombe. The second is a relatively newcomer Luna and is right north in the Tamar Valley and another single vineyard wine. Plush and full of energy a svoury finish - you decide which one you like best.

Last off is the Glaetzer-Dixon Mon Pere Shiraz. The 2010, to many people surprise took the coveted Jimmy Watson trophy and the following vintages have proven this was not a flash-in-the-pan. The 2017 is a stellar effort with plum and rip blackberry fruit off-set by a lush, structured palate. Fantastic stuff.

The 2014 Blanc de Blancs is seriously impressive. Ample in feel, Delamotte is especially rich in 2014, and yet there is plenty of freshness to balance things out. This is an especially savory style for Delamotte, and one that works so well. Dried lemon peel, pastry, almond, dried herbs and chamomile open in a beautifully translucent Blanc des Blancs that marries power and finesse. I can’t wait to see how it ages. Based on the 2019 vintage, the new NV Extra-Brut Rosé de Saignée is a rich, gastronomic wine, delivering aromas of raspberries and cherries mingled with notions of kirsch, warm spices and petals. Medium to full-bodied, layered and fleshy, with racy acids and a pretty pinpoint mousse, it's a vinous Champagne that would work well at table. WILLIAM KELLEY

Some width of white flower perfume. Gas that’s adding energy. Rounder and richer but cut by fine acidity and minerality – never austere but properly balanced. That’s a great finish – panoramic, gorgeously delicious and complex – I love this finish! BILL NANSON, The Burgundy Report

The 2018 Brut Blanc de Blancs is a blend of fruit from Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, Avize, Oger, Cramant, Chouilly and Oiry, six villages in the Côte des Blancs. Crushed rocks, mint, slate, lemon peel and green pear lend notable freshness. Like most wines in this vintage, the Blanc de Blancs is airy and medium-bodied in structure, but it shows lovely tension and fine balance. There's plenty of Delamotte class, in an understated style. The Delamotte 2018 Blanc de Blancs is showing well today, evoking a gourmand, complex bouquet of pastry, almonds, ripe orchard fruits, spices and spring flowers. Medium to full-bodied, layered and chiseled, it’s enveloping and round with a fleshy core of fruit, though not as fleshy as the 2012, concluding with a tense and long finish. 100% pinot meunier
A sweetness here, not sweet-sweet, but there's a richness and fruitiness that comes with this wine. Also a splash of orangey-pink colour too. Scents of candied almond, white strawberry, sea spray, stone fruits, a touch of whisky, mandarin, unusually, it's outside of the box for sure. The palate repeats a similar profile, a touch of pink ham savouriness in there, the rest like the bouquet; light fizz, crunchy texture despite the fruitier profile. Creamy elements through the finish too. It's kind of all over the place but finds a coherency. A really compelling, talking point Champagne, and really enjoyable. MIKE BENNIE, winefront.com

Meunier a great grape for Champagne in the same way Aligoté is for Burgundy. White peach, almond, a bit of a musky and animal character, peanut shells. Juicy, a sweeter uptake of white nectarine and ginger, a bare tickle of bubbles, pulls dry and chalky on the finish. Some fino tang, a spicy barrel character. A bit overt. GARY WALSH, winefront.com

This is overtly marked by prominent floral elements that combine notes of citrus and various white orchard fruit aromas with that of a whiff of honeysuckle. There is fine mid-palate density to the reasonably well-delineated broad-shouldered flavors that conclude in a bone-dry, very lemony and lingering if definitely compact and chiseled finish that is borderline painfully intense. At least some patience strongly suggested. OUTSTANDING, BURGHOUND

Certified biodynamic. Smells richer and creamier than the Rully Les St-Jacques 2022 but still the freshness of green apple. Super-creamy on the palate, both rounded and fresh. A clever tightrope between two extremes. Intense and elegant. JULIA HARDING

The 2021 Rully 1er Cru is a blend of six Premier Cru vineyards, since de Villaine lost 75% of the crop. It has a light but focused, almost Puligny-like bouquet, with touches of petrichor coming through with time. The palate is quite sapid on the entry. Very lightly spiced, with crisp acidity and a saline finish, this is an intriguing, quite cerebral Rully that will be difficult to resist in its youth. NEAL MARTIN

The NV Extra-Brut L’Ouverture is a bright, exuberant Champagne. Crushed rocks mint, white flowers, apricot, tangerine peel and citrus confit all race out of the glass. Bright and finely cut, this steely, delineated Champagne has a ton to offer. Time in the glass brings out burnished Pinot character and a good bit of breadth, but there’s a ton of Chardonnay-like vibrancy here too. Dosage is 4 grams per liter. ANTONIO GALLONI, Vinous.com

Savart's NV Brut Premier Cru L'Ouverture offers up expressive aromas of pear, honeyed orchard fruit, baking spices and fresh bread. Medium-bodied, lively and fine-boned, with a pretty core of fruit, lively acids and a pinpoint mousse, it's an attractive wine that's showing well out of the gates. WILLIAM KELLEY, Wine Advocate

A very fragrant blanc de noirs with 20 per cent of the second press and three years on lees. The wild red fruit is super fresh, delicate and floral; the lees time has this on a neat, reductive edge. The palate is very fine, fresh and crisp. Great depth and elegance here. JAMES SUCKLING

A discreet dollop of wood sets off the ever-so-mildly exotic aromas of white and yellow peach, passion fruit and subtle mineral reduction wisps. There isn't the same weight and density though there is much better refinement to the lightly stony, focused and sneaky long finish. WORTH A SPECIAL SEARCH - Almost a little fumé accent to this minerality - slowly opening with floral notes and more overt citrus. Largest scale in the mouth - but fluid and mineral - not a wine of density. The base is of a fine energy. The width of finishing flavour a wave of salinity. That's going to be quite a wine - if you have the time, wait 10 years! Bravo! BILL NANSON

DON'T MISS - A more restrained and equally cool nose grudgingly reveals its aromas of oyster shell, ocean spray, just sliced citrus and wet stone. There is again excellent volume and a sappy texture to the almost painfully intense and overtly powerful larger-bodied flavors that brim with minerality that adds a sense of lift to the compact, dry and sneaky long finish. Like all fine examples of Les Clos, this is clearly going to need at least 6 to 8 years of bottle aging and should amply repay 10 to 12. BURGHOUND

The 2022 Chablis Les Clos Grand Cru comes from a single 0.58-hectare parcel located midway up the incline towards Valmur. This expressive bouquet has yellow plum, wet stone and light hazelnut aromas, oddly reminding me of a fine Meursault! The well-balanced palate is taut and fresh, with a fine line of acidity and a malic finish that is more austere than the aromatics suggest. NEAL MARTIN

A rich version set in a firm, finely honed frame, with exotic spice, lime blossom and orange liqueur notes forming an aromatic thread, which winds through raspberry tart, grilled nut, graphite and crystallized honey flavors. Silky in texture, with a long, mouthwatering finish. WINE SPECTATOR

The NV Hommage au Pinot Noir is silky, soft and accessible. Gentle hints of dried orchard fruit, spice, chamomile, lemon confit, dried flowers and a touch of oak all grace this restrained, classy Champagne. Named after the light cavalry of Napoléon Bonaparte, in which the soldiers were the first to use the art of sabring, the Cuvée des Hussards is powerful and expressive. This cuvee was elaborated from 85% Chardonnay and 15% Pinot Noir coming from Premier and Grand Cru vineyards older than 40 years old. 2012 is regarded as the vintage of reference of the last decade.

OUTSTANDING - Cool but ripe aromas include those of mostly apple and acacia blossom along with an interesting hint of tangerine peel. There is solid size, weight and mid-palate density to the beautifully textured medium weight flavors that brim with sappy dry extract that easily buffers the moderately firm acid spine shaping the youthfully austere yet sneaky long finale. FIVE STARS - François is fortunate enough to have 5.85 hectares of Puligny-Montrachet from six plots. He is planning some parcellaire cuvées in 2023. We are back to finesse with this wine. The 2022 Puligny is beautifully aromatic, with all the floral character one could hope for. This has a brilliantly light touch despite the energy and the intensity. I think it is going to be a show stopper. Excellent natural acidity as well. JASPER MORRIS MW

A blend of four parcels and matured in 30% new oak, the 2020 Meursault Village has a fresh and well-defined bouquet with orange zest, honeysuckle and light white flower aromas. This is much more precise than the ‘19 tasted last year. The palate is taut and crisp on the entry, a twist of sour lemon lending tension and counterbalancing the richness on the finish. This is also agreeably cool and airy with its aromas of essence of wet stone, apple compote and pretty citrus wisps. There is excellent density to the powerful and almost painfully intense larger-scaled flavors that terminate in a chiseled, palate coating and wonderfully long finish. The 2017 Brut Nature Blanc de Blancs Terre de Vertus 1er Cru is creamy, open-knit and quite seductive. Readers will find a generous, sensual Champagne with plenty of early appeal. Vinification and aging in oak softens the contours. Dried pear, crushed flowers, mint and chamomile build beautifully over time. This is a fine effort in a very challenging year. No dosage. The 2017 Brut Nature Blanc de Blancs Terre de Vertus, which derives from two east-facing plots within the same lieu-dit in Les Barillers, located mid-slope, imparts a very mineral, almost crystalline character. A vineyard that rarely produces powerful wines, even in the context of 2017, it has retained its personality, though it’s a little more generous and slightly less focused than the 2016 rendition. Unfurling from the glass with aromas of lemon peel, honeysuckle and oyster shell, it is medium-bodied, racy and saline-tinged and can be approached before the last year’s release. Terre de Vertus is one of three single-terroir Blanc de Blancs produced at this estate and is certainly the most famous. It is from a parcel of vines on the chalky mid-slope of Vertus, traversing the 1er Cru lieux-dits of Les Barillers and Les Faucherets. These sites produce intensely mineral wines that recall the best of Le Mesnil (to the north) in their chalky raciness and drive.

The 2020 Meursault Les Santenots Blanc 1er Cru has a precise bouquet with lemon zest, orange blossom and crushed rock scents, all well defined and focused. The palate is well balanced with fine acidity, perhaps just missing a little precision towards the lightly honeyed finish, though there is good persistence here and a spicy aftertaste. VINOUS.com

Grapes from the village of Ecueil : 70% Pinot Noir, 22% Chardonnay, 8% Pinot Noir (Red Wine), 6 g/L dosage. 80% stainless steel, 20% old oak barrels and partial malolactic

Meaning ‘under the well’ the vines were planted from 1951 to 1982, an average age of 55 years old across the parcels. Sous Le Puits is made from 5 different parcels spanning 1.8 hectares that Domaine Larue own in this 1er Cru which borders the Meursault appellation in the North of the Puligny AOP, right at the top of the hill of Puligny-Montrachet, East facing. The site has deeper clay-limestone soil than the mid slope Cru’s, plus it’s is a little colder due to it’s slope position. FRANC ABOUT WINE

 

From 60-year-old vines in the south of Meursault just next to Les Perrières. "A fuller yellow and less bright, but not racked or fined yet. The bouquet suggests a bit of freshening up could be in order. That will certainly happen. Beginning with the striking, pale copper color, this is very unconventional rosé champagne. Wonderful fruit aromas that range from cherry and wild strawberry to persimmon and candied orange with a touch of sushi ginger. Then comes the mouth-filling and well-structured palate that has an amazing grainy-chalky feel to it, unlike anything else in this category. Very long, saline finish. A cuvée of pinot noir with a small amount of chardonnay that was vinified in amphoras. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold. JAMES SUCKLING

The NV Dame-Jane is 100% Pinot Noir vinified and aged in amphora. Bright and light on its feet, the Dame-Jane is brisk and yet also shows quite a bit of depth. Crushed red berry fruit, rose petal, mint, crushed rocks and hard candy all grace this super-expressive, mid-weight Rosé. This release is based on 2019, with 40% reserve wines. It's a super mineral, nutty wine with crunchy stone fruits. There is lovely, pulpy fruit but also racy, crunchy acidity and terrific length with a twist of pleasant astringency. It takes you (the 60 miles) to grand cru Chablis and back again. ROB WALTERS, importer

Review on a previous release
Proving superior Blanc de Blancs is quite possible in the Aube's Pinot Noir paradise, this opens with lemon cream and persistent white chocolate and nougat through the palate. Details of white flowers, peach and almond. Very gourmand and complex, and quite a counterpoint to the more austere Chardonnay Champagnes from further north. 100% Chardonnay. Single parcel. 50% pinot noir, 50% chardonnay
The 2015 Brut Nature Les Blanchiens is a 50/50 blend of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay picked in the eponymous mid-slope parcel in Mareuil-sur-Aÿ. It was aged for 12 months in oak before tirage, then aged for five years in bottle. A deep golden color moves on to a nose that opens with an initial tone of white lilies, followed by melted butter suffused with white pepper. Creamy mousse on the palate accentuates the essential saltiness and highlights the rye crumb and fresh brioche autolysis. This is rich and generous, from ripe and expressive grapes, from oak vinification but also from 2015. The salty verve in the background, however, provides ample balance and freshness. A rounded, gastronomic Champagne with much expression and a lasting, cleansing echo. Zero dosage. ANNE KREBIEHL MW

Luminous golden colour and fine cords of bubbles. The nose first reveals notes of citrus, candied lemon and yellow fruits. Then it evolves and reveals smoky notes of blond tobacco and roasted nuts. The finish is refreshing and long, ORPALE 2008 was imagined as a jewel of a cuvee. The 2008 Orpale is an exceptional, passionate cuvée that naturally has a special place at the table, served with gourmet aperitifs or with fine dishes during a meal. Domaine Wine Shippers, Importer

DON'T MISS - A toasty nose features notes of smoky grilled shellfish, pear and algae. The dense and equally serious larger-scaled flavors don't have quite the same power yet they are clearly more refined on the markedly bitter citrus zest finish that displays outstanding length. This is exceptionally classy and while it too could use more depth, that is all but assured if given a chance. BURGHOUND

Open, almost delicate aromatics. Supple, concentrated - but with a large growth of great flavour, lots of salinity, ultra complex and large finishing. This is a baby, I think there's much more to come. BILL NANSON

80% Chardonnay, 20% Pinot Noir from vines averaging 60 years old, the wine spends nearly 6 years on lees. Most importantly only the heart of the pressing is taken - 1400 litres instead of the usual 2100 litres, hence the name 'coeur de cuvee.'
The 2015 Brut Coeur de Cuvée is a pretty dense wine that belies its deceptively mid-weight structure. What surprises me most about the 2015 is how closed it is. In most years, especially warm years, Coeur de Cuvée is quite a bit more open and voluptuous, but the 2015 does not come across like that at all. Rather, it is super-classic in bearing, with tons of gravitas from the 60-year-old vines just waiting to emerge. There are none of the awkward herbal notes that penalize so many wines. Bright saline notes extend the finish effortlessly. The 2015 is a brilliant Coeur de Cuvée. ANTONIO GALLONI

Vilmart's 2014 Brut Rosé Emotion is laced with sweet dried cherry, dried herbs, blood orange and mint. It offers terrific breadth for the year, with the Pinot more in evidence than in the 2015 tasted alongside it (the blend is 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay for both). This is an exquisite Pinot Noir with a name very few would ever have heard of unless, of course, they put two and two together with the Meursaults, and the like, above.  This is, without doubt, the finest Blangy Rouge I have ever tasted.  This was blamed on their setting, high on the Côte and yet this should have been a plus and not a minus point for these wines. Maybe they were just left behind in favour of more famous and familiar Volnays and Pommards.  Well, this wine alone will set the record straight for this hamlet and for the future.  As the world warms up, sites like this will no doubt be highly prized, and in 2020, the vintage played into its hands.  This is one of the most expressive and downright delicious wines I have tasted in this entire campaign.  It is deeply fruited, not heavy, but intense and completely refreshing and magical on the finish.  I have awarded an extra half-point to this wine on this occasion because I want it to sit on a rare list in 2020.  Perhaps wine lovers far and wide will read about its glory and have the chance to taste just how epic Blagny can be. 19+ MATTHEW DUKES
