Quinta da Muradella Candea Blanco 2020

Even the entry-level white 2020 Candea Blanco, a regional blend of equal parts of Dona Blanca, Verdello and Treixadura fermented and kept with lees in stainless steel for one year, shows character, cleanliness, precision and freshness beyond the price point, and it transcends appellation and vintage and is offered with some time in bottle. It has only 12.5% alcohol and an expressive nose of herbs and flowers, and it is balanced, harmonious and elegant and finishes dry and long with a tasty and salty twist. A bargain. 6,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in August 2022. LUIS GUTIERREZ, Wine Advocate

  5. Louis Picamelot Cremant Les Terroirs Rose NV
Louis Picamelot Cremant Les Terroirs Rose NV
Siren song aromatics of strawberries and cream, a little tarragon and mineral and maybe a little vanilla lead you head first into the glass. So enticing and welcoming and it continues on the palate with the same ebullient fruit held within a soft and pillowy mousse creating an almost sensual decadent impression. Alongside that though is real energy and vigour elevating the fruit and spice (and a little sage) element in the wine. It's so beuatiuflly put together this wine and would leave a number of it's Champagne cousins for dead and ashamed of their pricing. Gorgeous sparkling. MICHAEL MCNAMARA

One of the crew called this “soft and mellow” I can see where that comes from, it certainly has a lovely mouth filling quality and all those billowing soft bubbles provide such a sensual cushioning effect, but the wine lacks nothing for racy energy either. I don't think its soft, I think it's lush!
Also, I love the fine chalkiness that punctuates the fruit. Like its BdB sibling the lights are flashing and the sirens are cranked up, they don’t shy away from the winemaking and let’s be honest, that’s what makes Champa… sparkling wines like this so exciting. Even with that distinct autolytic creaminess the wines overall impression is one of flirtatious elegance. It is my pick of the two, but only just, and it pips its sibling on refinement if not substance. ROSCOE

The entry-level red Burgundy comes from vineyards in the Côte de Beaune and Côte de Nuits. The vines range in age from 30 to 80 years and are farmed sustainably. The major part of this wine is matured in barriques and the remainder is done in stainless steel. This maintains a pure style with bright fruit and a fine texture.

  10. Luke Lambert Syrah 2023
    Luke Lambert Syrah 2023

80% whole bunch, and in 2023, picked a month later than the 2022.

Dark cherry and blue fruits, plenty of spice, black olive and grilled meat. It’s medium-bodied, spicy and perfumed, meaty too, with a surprisingly intense burst of ‘minerally’ acidity through its core. Tannin is all crushed rock and sooty goodness, and the finish is long and savoury and stalky. Very good. (95) GARY WALSH, The Wine Front

Beautifully poised, cool expression of shiraz with concentrated but elegant dark cherry fruit and a subtle overlay of spice. A very good follow-up to the excellent 2022, which is drinking beautifully now. MAX ALLEN, The Financial Review

This year, 80% whole bunches were included. In the crucial early days of vinification, Rosalind foot stomps the ferments three times a day to ensure each berry is quickly but gently popped, maximising the juice’s exposure to skins and stalks. Ferments are fast, and the wine is promptly pressed, settled and racked to 5000-litre foudre for maturation. This is such a composed, vivid young Syrah. Expect bright perfume, spice and dark berries woven through delicious earthy, stony elements. It’s slick, expressive and super long; world-class Syrah at an attainable price!

    Havilah Shiraz 2021

The Havilah Shiraz is a dream finally realised for Ricky Evans.

He'd had his eye on some Shiraz planted on the western side of the Tamar Valley for quite some time, and a warm vintage meant all of the fruit ripened neatly - making it perfect to go into this cuvee.

Filled with all the hallmarks of cool climate Shiraz like white pepper, blue fruits and a nice crunch of acidity, this is yet another killer wine to add to Ricky's stable.

Mittnacht Freres Cremant d'Alsace Extra Brut NV

Mittnacht Freres have been producing biodynamic wines for quite some time and are well known for their refined wines. They own some parcels in the Grand Crus like "Rosaker" or "Osterberg". We are looking forward to introducing more of their range some time soon.

This Appellation 'Cremant D'Alsace" is made using the traditional method with a secondary fermentation in bottle. It's aged for 32 months before disgorging.

Subtle sparkling with notes of pears, apples and peach, on a festival of light and very elegant bubbles. The palate is dry, notes of granny smith apples and hazelnut, built around a nice, ripe acidity. Delicious festive number !

  14. Yangarra King's Wood Shiraz 2023
    Yangarra King's Wood Shiraz 2023
From the 2.3ha Block 12, a southeast-facing sand and ironstone outcrop; 20% whole bunch, with 80% sorted and crushed; matured in 2500L French and Austrian oak for 16 months. This opens with a little reductive cloak, which is appealing in itself, if a little occluding of the fruit. Initially at least. There's a Rhône-like feel, with a spicy, smoky angle. Fruit flavours roll through blackberry pastille, blueberry, tart boysenberry and black cherry, accented with malted barley, rolling tobacco, roasted meat, freshly ground coffee, star anise, cassia and allspice. There's an underlying finesse here, as with all the '23s, both red and white. Excellent. (96) MARCUS ELLIS, winecompanion.com

Certified biodynamic - Tasmania's first

Wild strawberry here with some twiggy, foresty goodness edging in on the red cherry and wild berry fruit. Long and layered with a little sappy goodness, some Christmas spice and a touch of wild game. Its not a big pinot but we wouldn't call it light either. It staddles a really lovely middle ground here not leaving you want for succulent fruit or structure and complexity.

    Koerner Clare Classico 2020

A blend of vineyards in Clare Valley blending cabernet sauvignon, malbec, sangiovese and grenache. Clever. Their own ‘classico’. The new label reversed the colours on this one, more black on black with white font, and it looks sexy as.

Gorgeous wine. Supple, succulent, lush with dark fruit character, new leather, tobacco, mint and sage leaf characters with a fine, graphite minerally character through it all. It feels warm-hearted and kind of generous but keeps to the medium weight brief. It rolls with flavour, energy and tension of refined tannins through a long, mouth-watering finish. It feels pedigree from hello and keeps you engaged. Really beautiful. MIKE BENNIE, www.winefront.com

  21. Mount Mary Marli Russell RP2 2021
Mount Mary Marli Russell RP2 2021

Grenache (60%) Shiraz (25%), Mataro (10%) and Cinsault (5%). It’s in keeping with my little Grenache theme this week, except it’s from the Yarra Valley!

It’s complex and a wine of many layers. Raspberry and blackberry, plenty of perfume and spice, hazelnut, something in the way of dried herbs and earth. Medium-bodied, no shortage of red and black fruit, rose oil, but also something a little more meaty and savoury in the mix, with fresh acidity, kind of like pomegranate, fine emery board tannin grip, and a fine ‘minerally’ finish of excellent length. Outstanding in 2021. (95) GARY WALSH, The Wine Front

60/25/10/5% grenache/shiraz/mourvèdre/cinsault. The grenache spends 16 months in 1600L seasoned foudre, the rest matured in barriques (15% new for the shiraz). A wine that shows both the potential of these varieties and this blend at Mount Mary. Perfumed and spicy with red and black fruits and a little Mediterranean garrigue. Brightly fruited and with tannins that are juicy and balanced, this medium-bodied wine is already a treat to drink. PHILIP RICH, Halliday Wine Companion

Cherry, raspberry, nice and aromatic, with a dried flower perfume, plus a little sap and spice, and an undercurrent of something a bit earthy or clay-like. It’s medium-bodied, again the violet and rose perfume amongst juicy cherry and blue fruit, toasted hazelnuts, a light dusty grain and grip to tannin, cranberry acidity, a little blood orange tang, with a bright finish of excellent length. Since being planted in 2005, Mourvèdre has evolved with maturing vines to the point it is now ready to go under the Isolation Ridge label in its own right. It’s a variety that I really do like, especially from Frankland River where some very smart examples are starting to emerge. This is certainly one of those. Captures the savoury and slightly dried herb characters of this variety with a regional ironstone ferrous influence. It’s medium boded and beautifully weighted with fine sinewy tannins and well managed oak harmonising perfectly. Beautiful.(96) RAY JORDAN, Wine Pilot

Charteris Central Otago Pinot Noir 2022
Charteris a trans-Tasman story of exploration, love and connection. Its protagonist is PJ Charteris, an eternal dreamer whose heart burns with a contradiction: fondness for home and desire to explore. Wine, a lens through which to view time and place, is the perfect medium to satisfy those yearnings and to share the fruits of experience with others. In cahoots with his wife Chrissi whe he met while headwinmaker at Brokenwood PJ brings a veritable wealth of experience and know-how crafting some of the best and most drinkable pinot noir out of Otago.

Fresh cut Doris plum and ripe late season Black Douglas cherry full the aroma with layers of anise and subtle brown spice rack. Spicy whole bunch lift provides a layer of wild thyme like complexity to the nose. The palate entry is all cherry with a hint of Pomegranate and licorice across silky yet finely textured tannins. The cherry fruit drive sits over integrated oak which gives a supporting background structure. Long plush and generous with a good 7 year future in the cellar. - PJ Charteris

Jean Louis Chave Selection Cotes du Rhone Mon Coeur 2022
.. the bouquet engages immediately, with an open, busy offer of cooked blackberry, a note of sweetness in it, like a coulis, and a touch of licorice from the Syrah. The palate glides along from the off, is a gourmand affair, with its sweet flow central to its appeal. It offers a Villages level Côtes du Rhône with ample content and good, dark berry fruit throughout, the tannins polished and in the wheel, just a note of grain from them on the close. There are threads of freshness that are vital for its movement. It's a free and full runner now, with the ability to loosen up a little over the next couple of years. JOHN LIVINGSTONE LEARMONTH

Its charismatic, black-hearted core wrestles your palate, offering a kaleidoscopic burst of blue, black and dark red berries. Ripe licorice flavours mix with earthy inky tones and then a suave tail of tannins guides you to the finish line. Gentle Folk Scary Gully Pinot Noir 2023

Peppery, herbal, lifted and grippy. A good combo of things when it strolls through a sluice of tart cherry juice and cranberry tang. Tightly coiled too, a vigorous and streamlined pinot noir, albeit it has expressive nature, a distinct personality and flair. Refreshing all up too. Detailed in its way, showing fruit, spice, savoury elements harmoniously married, though you could say the snips of whole bunch make a mark. Very good. (95) MIKE BENNIE

The broodier and deeper of the three single-site pinots this release. Scary Gully is the oldest site with the most elevation. The essence of a long ripening season is cast here with black cherry and plum, compact and dense. There's a cosy up-in-a-log cabin appeal to it, all crunchy and wild, confident in its expression, with ample spice and twiggy herbs, thyme and bay. It feels unperturbed and complete. (95) JAMES HALLIDAY’S WINE COMPANION

2020- Slender plum and cherry – pretty and gently perfumed. It has lovely line and length without ever going broad or surrendering its prettiness. Still, it’s no wallflower – there’s drive and persistence of flavour – and even the gentle finish, with a frame of stalky grip, persists and lingers. Deceptively powerful. (96) DECANTER

Fine-grained, gently persistent tannins add to a wine that can be drunk now but will reward time in the cellar. (95) PHILIP RICH, Halliday Wine Companion

Clyde Park are really coming into their own of late with a string of great releases and this is one of the strongest yet.

The Moranghurk vineyard was established in 1997 by Ross and Liz Wilkie on their beautiful 459ha property in the Lethbridge district of the Moorabool Valley, Geelong. The wines from this site showcase the outstanding varietal character and flavour of the region, whilst being distinctively Moranghurk.  Fermented in open fermenters and hand plunged twice daily. Pressed to French oak for malolactic fermentation and matured for 10 months prior to bottling.

    Meadowbank Pinot Noir 2023

It fairly pops with red cherry and ripe strawberry, there’s also some spice, dried flowers and something a little bit earthy, like brown mushrooms, with a just a hint of smoky reduction. It’s juicy and succulent, with cool balanced acidity, and if you swish it around in your mouth, there’s fine emery board tannin that feels very nice, along with a pleasantly sappy edge. The finish is long, spicy and sweetly fruited. It’s lovely now, though likely better again with a couple more years under its belt. 95 GARY WALSH, the wine front

The lion’s share of fruit for Meadowbank’s lithe, detailed Pinot is drawn from a north-facing parcel of vines planted by Gerald Ellis in 1987 (which Pete thinks is probably a combination of MV6 and D5V12 clones). For the last two years, a small portion (about 20%) of younger-vine fruit grown on the Top Woolshed block has been included in the blend. These vines were planted in 2014 on a lofty outcrop with more volcanic presence in the soils than the sand, sandstone and dark coffee rock in the old-vine block. The fruit from here lends savoury, graphite undertones to the wine, as well as driving power and grunt to the back palate. Last year’s release took out the Australian Pinot Noir Challenge, and this year’s wine (in our humble opinion) is a cut above its predecessor. Once again, Pete’s instinct has paid dividends. “The Top Woolshed block is pretty unique; without doubt, it’s the soil type making the difference”, he told us.

The fruit was picked over two weeks and fermented in two batches. The early pick was fully destemmed, while the later pick fermented with 50% bunches. Maturation took place in a mix of old and new oak (about 10%) for nine months. It shimmies out of the glass with lacy berry purity kissed by floral perfumes. Equally vibrant on the palate, the multi-layered texture deals in gorgeous red fruits flecked with sweet, earthy notes and fine, melting graphite tannins. Wow, delicious. There’s terrific depth throughout, yet the delivery is one of elegance, buoyancy, pretty flesh and subtle mineral-scented length of flavour. Quiet power meets Burgundy-leaning charisma. Killer.

Very good colour, quite deep and retains a good tint of purple in the rim. Wood-spice and a hint of Campari to sniff; the palate full and intense, loaded with tannins which add grip and persistence. Long, long carry. A rich, powerful, decadent pinot which is offering much right now but also promises a bright future. This wine punches above its weight  (96) HUON HOOKE

Lower Derwent sourced fruit, essentially from the outer suburbs of Hobart, planted nigh on 40 years ago. Dense plantings. Lots of layers here. Bracken, shiitake dashi, darker cherry and freshly grown moss, spruce and other forestry allusions. Dense, pliant and convincing, this is excellent mid-weighted Tassie pinot. (95) JAMES SUCKLING

A bright, complex pinot noir... Pure red and dark cherry, raspberry and wild strawberry fruits with hints of Chinese barbecue shop, five-spice, teacake, mushroom, purple floral and subtle leaf litter tones. There is a nice sense of space and clarity in this wine, fine acidity providing the pulse and a sustained red-fruited finish studded with game, amaro and spice. (95) JAMES HALLIDAY'S WINE COMPANION

Place of Changing Winds Heathcote Syrah 2021

The reason the POCW folks went to this vineyard was for the syrah, this being the first of the releases solely from this site, from a singular year.

Very floral in the perfume, violets and lavender, whiffs of eucalyptus and loads of raspberry, cherry and strawberry, in a fog of scent too. Lots of concentration to taste but with a glossy wash of acidity under the tart red cherry, game meat, dried herbs and white pepper characters. Beautiful flavours, fine, satiny tannins, great extension of flavour, a cool, minty finish. Spot on medium weight fragrant and spicy style. MIKE BENNIE, The Wine Front

Quin Wines Barossa Valley Shiraz 2020
Shiraz sourced from the 450m elevation, 1982-planted Hampton vineyard on Menglers Hill; destemmed, 10 days on skins and 18 months in older, seasoned French oak. Satsuma plum, blueberry and boysenberry fruit tones are joined by hints of fine spice, sage, violets, softly spoken vanillin oak and earth. The fruit darkens on the palate, tensing before fanning out on the finish with a cascade of dusty, granitic tannin and plenty of Eden Valley drive. Lovely. (95) DAVE BROOKES, James Halliday

Glowing purple, an exuberant nose, with abundant juicy dark berry fruit energy. All destemmed. A large jug of this would go down handsomely of a summer's evening. Excellent fruit-acid balance, some blackcurrants at the back. Lovely. JASPER MORRIS MW

An expressive nose of poached plum, violet and earth gives way to racy and well-detailed flavors that conclude in a mildly austere sneaky long finish. Note that the supporting tannins are sufficiently supple such that this could be approached upon release. BURGHOUND

Deep colour, a glossy purple. Ripe, plush and fruitful. Nice undertow of spice, but the array of dark fleshed fruit is what come across most prominently, it's well rounded and fulsome but the underpinned by fresh acidity and fine, sweet tannins. Nice wine. Some airy, spring forest aromas, little poke and prod of minerality, a subtly sappy feel. Yeah, nice wine! ROSCOE
