  1. Dirupi Valtellina Superiore 2019
    Dirupi Valtellina Superiore 2019
The Dirupi 2019 Valtellina Superiore is generous and balanced, with a 360-degree approach to the palate underlined by dark fruit, plum jam, bluebells and other mountain wildflowers. You smell alpine slopes, cool weather and glacier-like aromas. The palate shows some dried herb and lightly powdery tannins. Fruit comes from a two-hectare site that is divided into nine parcels with mostly sandy soils. Production is 9,915 bottles. MONICA LARNER, The Wine Advocate

The 2019 Valtellina Superiore is super-expressive right out of the gate. Spice, cedar, leather and tobacco meld into a core of bright red Nebbiolo fruit, with dusty tannins that wrap it all together. I suppose there could be a bit more finesse here (especially in the tannins) but all things considered, this is nicely done. ANTONIO GALLONI

  2. Cavallotto Langhe Nebbiolo 2021
    Cavallotto Langhe Nebbiolo 2021
Dark and earthy to open, new leather and walnuts, wafts of bergamot, spice and dried flowers. It’s full-bodied, deep in flavour, red and black fruits, kind of rustic, but in a pleasing way, not least in the tea and grainy tannin grip department. There’s a cinch of orange peel bitterness, with a long grated nutmeg and slightly rusty tannin finish. Really opens up after some air. Such character. A very serious Lange Neb! GARY WALSH, The Wine Front

The word benchmark gets bandied around a lot, but this is a Nebbiolo that justifies that term from an already hyped vintage. This year’s wine is drawn exclusively from declassified, mostly young-vine fruit from the great Castiglione Falletto Cru of Bricco Boschis. Cropped at yields below 40 hl/ha, the grapes are entirely destemmed, and fermentation is spontaneous. Malolactic conversion was in cement tanks during the spring following harvest. The wine was aged for 18 months in Slavonian oak botti and bottled unfiltered.

The 2020 Barbaresco is lovely. A wine of charm, the 2020 shows how appealing the vintage is. Crushed ?owers, mint, spice, blood orange and mint are all nicely delineated. This mid-weight, vibrant Barbaresco is impeccable. It's a gorgeous entry-level offering from Albino Rocca. (92) ANTONIO GALLONI, Vinous

    Yann Chave Crozes Hermitage 2022
…it's a medium-bodied, polished, elegant, satisfying Crozes revealing terrific purity in its red and blue-tinged fruits as well as sappy herb, floral, and peppery nuances. This is classic, lively, old school, yet elegant Syrah all the way. It's going to evolve for 7-8 years or more. JEB DUNNUCK, jebdunnuck.com

…Vinified from fully destemmed and certified organic grapes, it unwinds with bright raspberry, black cherry, hints of blackcurrant and earthy undertones. Medium- to full-bodied, concentrated and round, the 2022 is enveloped by polished tannins, closing with good drive on the sapid finish. NICOLAS GREINACHER, vincous.com

  6. Yeringberg Shiraz 2014
    Yeringberg Shiraz 2014
Shiraz from one of Australia’s greatest estates. I thought we’d already reviewed this; not sure how it slipped through the net. Thankfully the ‘crowd-funding’ side of TWF audience kept us up to the task.

You name it, it’s here. This is the antithesis of a simple red. Every time you sip you find something different. It runs with redcurrant but from there come breakouts of meat, violets, black pepper, jellied liquorice, stems and mint. Tannin is grunty, almost grainy, with cloves and peppers studded through. The texture generally is quite silken but the wine as a whole does not go quietly, as indeed it shouldn’t. Beyond a certain price point we want more than mere fruit; the brief is met here. Excellent wine. For the dinner table, we sail. CAMPBELL MATTINSON, The Wine Front 2017

Red fruit, baking spice, mint, tobacco. It's medium-bodied, bright and fresh, strawberry and spice, with a particularly pleasing 'mineral' character, and plenty of energy with that, tannin is fine and dusty/peppery. and the finish is fresh and quite long, and distinctly spicy. It's a wine of clarity and poise. In short, I really like it. GARY WALSH

A fragrant nose of red berries, spiced cherries, dried herbs, lavender and mild spices. Medium body with fine tannins and crisp acidity. Fresh and precise with balance and character. Gianfranco Alessandria Barolo DOCG 2020

The 2020 Barolo is a gorgeous, classy wine. Crushed rose petal, red berry fruit, spice, mint and orange peel are all beautifully lifted in this gracious, mid-weight Barolo. Bright Monforte acids lend notable energy and freshness. This elegant, delicate Barolo is superb. The 2020 spent two years in wood, mostly barrique and about 10% in cask. What a joy. ANTONIO GALLONI, Vinous.com

Rich and warmed aromas of ripe red fruits abundant in spice, featuring a pronounced licorice presence that melds with the warm, inviting notes of oak. On the palate, the wine is firm, with chewy tannins, contributing to its structured and robust character that keeps the rounded and plush fruit at bay as more savory elements develop as the wine evolves. Drink 2026 - 2040. WINE ENTHUSIAST

Monforte d’Alba. Lustrous ruby. Rich strawberry fruit with a peppery tingle on the nose. Sappy red fruit with plenty of acidity and soft tannins. Very long and sweetly perfumed while the plentiful acidity makes the whole look leaner than it is. WALTER SPELLER, JancisRobinson.com

Fairing from iron-rich soils of Serralunga, the Massolino family carves out a niche for themselves in Barolo as being wines you can age, but also enjoy young due to the modern-classic style. Large format Slovenian oak tempers the fine tannins and a youthful elegant red fruit of strawberries is backed up with crushed herbs and hints of star-anise. Delightful. FRANKE

The 2020 Barolo is a terrific wine in its peer group. It offers up scents of pine, cedar, sweet pipe tobacco and crushed herbs. Delicate and elegant, with gorgeous aromatics and tons of presence, the 2020 is impeccably done. This bottling has aged quite well in the past. I imagine that will also be true of the 2020. And then there’s the finish. What a finish. Structured, textural, flavoursome and long. This wine is the complete package. (97) CAMPBELL MATTINSON, Wine Companion

Made from 100 per cent de-stemmed Shiraz grapes from the highest block on the vineyard, matured in puncheons, 20 per cent new, bottled after 15 months. Very seductive wine, really deep black fruit aromas, and a beautiful seam of dark spices – Langworthy describes them as “baking spices”; more allspice and clove and star anise than pepper – leading on to a rich but medium-bodied shiraz in the mouth. Very good. MAX ALLEN, AFR

There's a pleasant little blackcurrant jam note on the nose here. Not as powerful as his cuvée classique, but a greater sense of finesse, balance and drinkability. Long finish. MATT WALLS, decanter.com

The bouquet brims with bright cassis fruit clad for now in smoky oak. The fruit pleases via a lingering coulis-style sweetness. A scintillating nose of mace, clove, blue-fruit persuasions, lilac, pepper-dried salumi, fennel seed and kelp, akin to nori of the sort found at Tokyo's arsenal of exceptional sushi counters. On the slightly richer side of mid-weighted. Yet, the slippery skein of tannin is so immaculately placed that there is neither heat nor an ounce of sloppy, sweet fruit. Everything is compressed into a polished bone of tension and savory refinement. The acidity is saline and lathered with tapenade. More of a syrah from an external perspective. An irrefutably brilliant one. I wish I had more to cellar, given the wine's noble stature. A ringer for refined Cornas, if not an oxymoron. (97) NED GOODWIN, Jamessuckling.com

A sultry aroma of blackberry, Bing cherries and kombu seaweed. Crushed juniper, clove and allspice meet sandalwood, brown mushroom and pinecones. It’s full of forestry and undergrowth with specks of kalamata olive and hawthorn. Sweetness of spice shines through unpinning the black berried fruit and herbal nuances. Extremely compact and weighty. There is a lot of wine here for the dollar and as per usual it shows off its pedigree with class and sophistication. Tannins are suede like and acidity drives the flavours to the finish line which are way off in the distance. Drink now and will cellar for 5 years. A great wine for slow cooked beef tendon or oxtail. The 2018 Roero Riserva Roche d'Ampsèj is powerful, complex and beguiling. Macerated cherry, cinnamon, orange peel cedar and dried flowers all open over time. Deep and pliant, with terrific depth and polished tannins, the 2018 Roche d'Ampsèj is an absolute delight. Drink it over the next decade or so. ANTONIO GALLONI

  44. Yeringberg Shiraz 2021
    Yeringberg Shiraz 2021

Vines planted in 1999. About 6% whole bunch. 30% new oak.

Plum and cherry, cracked pepper, hazelnut, Turkish apricot and musk stick, with a little cedar oak. It’s plum and plummy, a grainy grip to tannin, balanced acidity, nutty with something of a toffee flavour, with a clip of oak on a finish of good length. Still a little elemental, but good. Needs a couple more years of cellaring. GARY WALSH, The Wine Front

Diego & Damiano Barale Barolo 2020
Fruit is sourced from Cannubi, Monrobiolo di Bussia, San Giovanni.
Complex, subtle and concentrated on the nose at the same time. Minerally core wrapped up in cherry fruit. Lots of supple acidity and fragrant light fruit while very persistent and long. Fine grip of grainy tannins on the finish. Almost ephemeral. WALTER SPELLER

  46. Rizzi Barbaresco Nervo Fondetta 2017
    Rizzi Barbaresco Nervo Fondetta 2017
Rose, violet and perfumed berry aromas lead the nose followed by whiffs of camphor and culinary spice. Full bodied, supremely elegant and surprisingly fresh for the hot vintage, the savory palate delivers ripe Marasca cherry, crushed raspberry, licorice and crushed mint alongside taut, refined tannins. Fresh acidity keeps it impeccably balanced. Drink 2022–2032. (95) KERRIN O'KEEFE, www.wineentusiast.com

The south-facing Nervo vineyard is located at an altitude of over 300 metres, which may account for its elegance. Ernesto Dellapiana and his son Enrico produce wines with a light touch, and their Nervo is aged in concrete tanks as well as casks. The red-fruit nose is intense and pure, and the attack supple and silky. There's a taut structure here, and fine acidity that keeps it lively and peppery. This wine is marked by energy, stylishness, and persistence. STEPHEN BROOK, Decanter

  47. Seville Estate Old Vine Reserve Shiraz 2020
Seville Estate Old Vine Reserve Shiraz 2020
From a single site at Seville Estate planted in 1972; 20% whole bunches and matured in seasoned French puncheons. From a cool year, this was picked on the 1st week of April meaning the fruit had plenty of hang time. Just 120 dozen made. A brilliant crimson magenta. Beautifully perfumed and pure. Redolent of raspberry coulis, peony, Asian spices and potpourri. Supremely elegant and structured, there's a gentle meatiness to go with the pure red fruits. The tannins are silky and persistent. Finishes very long and too good to spit! (97) JAMES HALLIDAY'S WINE COMPANION

In some ways this is similar to the Dr McMahon, which makes sense since the fruit source is the same, but it's more lively and unleashes more perfume and fruit. I would go so far as to say it has an almost airy feel to it, aromatically it's quite enticing, plenty of inviting little details that pluck at your senses. The palate eases in to things with ample weight, beautiful texture and pitch perfect tannins. It's long and edges towards vibrant with those cool edged fruit notes, but its dense enough to tell you there is a lot more to come here. What a glorious wine. In a sensational line up of booze this may be my pick of the bunch. ROSCOE

  48. Arpepe Grumello Rocca di Piro Valtellina Superiore 2019
Arpepe Grumello Rocca di Piro Valtellina Superiore 2019

Sth Facing, 350-500m altitude, slate and limestone soils
Grumello is always called 'the precocious one.' A mix of limestone and clay soils, it offers depth coupled with nervosity. Packed with blueberries, violets and white button mushrooms around a core of pitch-perfect red cherries. Subtle notes of licorice and spice waft in and out. The tannins are fine yet firm leaving a powdery trail on the palate. Pure, precise and precocious. GABRIELLE POY

Sage, bay leaf, cherry, smoky mineral and steely, paprika, a warm and cool ride here, and tannic too, pleasingly so, with orange peel, grainy dry tannin and a peppery and herbal finish of good length. Such character. Cherry richness. So good. GARY WALSH
