Xanadu Stevens Road Chardonnay 2022It has all the hallmarks of the site – Block 2, off Stevens Road, obviously, all Gingin clone, whole-bunch pressed to French oak, wild fermentation. And while there’s lees stirring throughout its nine months in barrel, there’s no mlf. It’s still a little frisky from youth as the acidity holds sway, yet in-between pink grapefruit and lime juice, zest and pith, too. Some years I prefer Stevens, and in others, the Reserve. This year, Mr Stevens takes the tray.Has a slight struck match character, along with lime, grapefruit, white peach, some fennel, light spice and almond nougat. Medium-bodied, lively acidity with plenty of fine flinty texture, green olive , a little parmesan rind, citrus, white peach, and again that lovely almond gloss to temper the wine. A lower pH, inherent freshness and phenolic bite, the artillery that delivers the impressive structural latticework necessary for further development. Really classy. A harmony of high tones and deep base notes that presents a birds eye view of Hills chardonnay. There is real power and weight here but with plenty of fruit tension and enough malo buffering. Colombera & Garella Bramaterra 201970% Nebbiolo with 15% Croatina and 15% Vespolina from a two hectare vineyard in Masserano. The soils here are high-acid, reddish-brown porphyritic sand of volcanic origin, which lends a particularly mineral character to the wines. Vespolina and Croatina are co-fermented for 10 days, Nebbiolo for 15+, aged for 24 months in old barriques. Bramaterra is typically more structured and robust with dark berry fruit, spice, iron and meaty notes.

Shaw & Smith Balhannah Vineyard Shiraz 2021A scintillating nose of mace, clove, blue-fruit persuasions, lilac, pepper-dried salumi, fennel seed and kelp, akin to nori of the sort found at Tokyo's arsenal of exceptional sushi counters. On the slightly richer side of mid-weighted. Yet, the slippery skein of tannin is so immaculately placed that there is neither heat nor an ounce of sloppy, sweet fruit. Everything is compressed into a polished bone of tension and savory refinement. The acidity is saline and lathered with tapenade. More of a syrah from an external perspective. A sultry aroma of blackberry, Bing cherries and kombu seaweed. Crushed juniper, clove and allspice meet sandalwood, brown mushroom and pinecones. It’s full of forestry and undergrowth with specks of kalamata olive and hawthorn. Sweetness of spice shines through unpinning the black berried fruit and herbal nuances. Extremely compact and weighty. There is a lot of wine here for the dollar and as per usual it shows off its pedigree with class and sophistication. Tannins are suede like and acidity drives the flavours to the finish line which are way off in the distance. Drink now and will cellar for 5 years. A great wine for slow cooked beef tendon or oxtail. Cristom Eola Amity Hills Chardonnay 2021Winemaker Daniel Estrin calls this wine one of tension and generosity. A blend of fruit from Eileen, Louise and the Paul Gerrie vineyards, this wine spends 11 months in barrel and four to five months in stainless steel. Cristom Eola Amity Hills Chardonnay 2022From eight different sites in the Eola Amity Hills, winemaker Daniel Estrin learned how to make Chardonnay from Litorrai's Ted Lemon. Paul Gerrie makes up the bulk of this wine with Eileen and Louise. 100% barrel fermented Estrin uses a tactile approach to the lees inclusion in this wine. At the entry-level, this wine is still over-vintaged, which builds tension in the wine. Notes of tarragon and chipped flint frame the smoky grilled lemon aromatics. The 2022 Chardonnay Eola-Amity Hills is a total pleasure on the nose, wafting up with notions of sweet spice, chamomile and ginger-tinged yellow apples. Round and supple, this possesses a core of juicy acidity that enlivens it's tart orchard fruits as a salty sensation forms toward the close. Seville Estate Old Vine Reserve Shiraz 2020From a single site at Seville Estate planted in 1972; 20% whole bunches and matured in seasoned French puncheons. From a cool year, this was picked on the 1st week of April meaning the fruit had plenty of hang time. Just 120 dozen made. A brilliant crimson magenta. Beautifully perfumed and pure. Redolent of raspberry coulis, peony, Asian spices and potpourri. Supremely elegant and structured, there's a gentle meatiness to go with the pure red fruits. The tannins are silky and persistent. In some ways this is similar to the Dr McMahon, which makes sense since the fruit source is the same, but it's more lively and unleashes more perfume and fruit. I would go so far as to say it has an almost airy feel to it, aromatically it's quite enticing, plenty of inviting little details that pluck at your senses. The palate eases in to things with ample weight, beautiful texture and pitch perfect tannins. It's long and edges towards vibrant with those cool edged fruit notes, but its dense enough to tell you there is a lot more to come here. What a glorious wine. In a sensational line up of booze this may be my pick of the bunch. ROSCOE

Grumello is always called 'the precocious one.' A mix of limestone and clay soils, it offers depth coupled with nervosity. Packed with blueberries, violets and white button mushrooms around a core of pitch-perfect red cherries. Subtle notes of licorice and spice waft in and out. The tannins are fine yet firm leaving a powdery trail on the palate. Pure, precise and precocious. Juicy liquorice-laced pumice stone and volcanic dusty tannin is terrific, and it's so spicy and long to close. What a specific and terroir driven wine this is. Unlike anything else. Tapanappa Tiers Chardonnay 2024This has to rank up there with the best of the Tiers Vineyard Chardies yet released. It was an ever so slightly warmer vintage than the previous and this is reflected in the depth and fruit concentration expressed with relative opulence. Lots of nectarine, and cashew with a spicy pear edge to it. The fine chalky acid really holds the tension ensuring a defined and exceptionally long finish. A dry savoury and tight subtle astringency on the finish provides the final flourish to an outstanding wine. (97) RAY JORDAN, Wine Pilot
The vines used for Tiers were planted in 1981, which is pioneering territory for Adelaide Hills. The clone is unknown, though they think it’s related to the cuttings brought in by James Busby in 1832.
There’s a bit of ooomph and weight to this wine, though it’s still clearly ‘fine wine’. Pear, banana, cashew and spice. It’s glossy and slick, but has a good cut of grapefruity acidity to offset, and the finish is long and offers powdery grip to close. A little more generous than some years, I feel, but very good Chardonnay here. GARY WALSH, Wine Front
