Yangarra King's Wood Shiraz 2023From the 2.3ha Block 12, a southeast-facing sand and ironstone outcrop; 20% whole bunch, with 80% sorted and crushed; matured in 2500L French and Austrian oak for 16 months. This opens with a little reductive cloak, which is appealing in itself, if a little occluding of the fruit. Initially at least. There's a Rhône-like feel, with a spicy, smoky angle. Fruit flavours roll through blackberry pastille, blueberry, tart boysenberry and black cherry, accented with malted barley, rolling tobacco, roasted meat, freshly ground coffee, star anise, cassia and allspice. Richter Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Kabinett 2021The 2021 Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Kabinett offers a clear, precise and pure, lovely slate-driven bouquet with citric fruit and some cassis and gooseberry aromas. Crystalline, linear and fresh on the palate, this is an elegant, lush and silky-textured, precise and almost sharp but also round and finely sweet Kabinett from the Himmelreich that shows red and black currant notes on the aftertaste. Mount Mary Marli Russell RP2 2021Grenache (60%) Shiraz (25%), Mataro (10%) and Cinsault (5%). It’s in keeping with my little Grenache theme this week, except it’s from the Yarra Valley!
It’s complex and a wine of many layers. Raspberry and blackberry, plenty of perfume and spice, hazelnut, something in the way of dried herbs and earth. Medium-bodied, no shortage of red and black fruit, rose oil, but also something a little more meaty and savoury in the mix, with fresh acidity, kind of like pomegranate, fine emery board tannin grip, and a fine ‘minerally’ finish of excellent length. On completion of my first sip, I leant back, crossed my arms, tilted my head, and let out a wry smile—soft and relaxed, like a resting hammock. As always, this wine kills. Leaning further toward savoury characters than the ’23 vintage, I enjoyed the punchy floral prettiness and overall intensity. A bouquet of white peach, tangerine peel, green mango and lime. One of the many parcels sees oak (5% of the total makeup), and the wine spends eight months on lees before bottling—building a slatey texture and complementing the tight framed, puckering acid. Pith, chalk, pressed lavender and mandarin—it’s a fruit salad breakfast in the Mentawai Islands. This is one of Australia’s best-value wines, and once again, Frankland Estate is pushing boundaries in the vineyard and the industry—redefining what Australian Riesling can look like—and they’re doing it from WA. Frankland Estate Isolation Ridge Mourvedre 2021Since being planted in 2005, Mourvèdre has evolved with maturing vines to the point it is now ready to go under the Isolation Ridge label in its own right. It’s a variety that I really do like, especially from Frankland River where some very smart examples are starting to emerge. This is certainly one of those. Captures the savoury and slightly dried herb characters of this variety with a regional ironstone ferrous influence. Vines planted in 2004, which makes them the oldest in Frankland River. 110 dozen produced.
This is a very fine rendition of Mourvèdre. It’s medium-bodied, dusty and spicy, with fragrant dried herbs, red and blue fruit, liquorice root and dried flower perfume. It feels quite stony and ‘minerally’, some bloody ferrous things, acidity is all just so, and in some ways, it puts me in mind of top shelf German Pinot Noir, which is strange to say, and maybe esoteric, though that’s the kind of feel it has. There’s a little grilled meat, toasted hazelnut, and orange peel, with a bright finish of excellent length. Oh, and the quality of the tannin, I forgot to mention, is so lovely, a sort of fine brick dust texture to it. It’s under-stated, and quite wonderful. (95) GARY WALSH, The Wine Front
Mourvedre is one of the most improved varieties emerging from WA's vineyards. As the first to plant this variety in the region, Frankland Estate led the way. This represents a modern style - a middleweight that packs a punch. Flavours are a complex melange of blueberry essence, dark chocolate, petrichor and a dash of umami broth.It's the grape skin tannins that make this style so unique and wonderfully moreish.They bring dryness and lightness at first, then gently creep across the palate giving the wine energy and substance as you enjoy the changing flavours. There’s a lot of detail and delight with this savoury syrah, a 1.5% splash of viognier and 3.5% glug of mourvèdre also in the mix, with 5% whole bunches, then aged 14 months in French oak foudres plus puncheons. The tannins are key – they are shapely, plush, almost velvety, and augmented by aromas/flavours of dark fruit, warm spice, ferrous notes and gun smoke. Pavillon de Chavannes Cote de Brouilly Ambassades 2022The history of Pavillon de Chavannes is deeply intertwined with that of Château Thivin, another esteemed estate in Côte de Brouilly. In 1861, the Jambon-Chanrion family acquired the estate. The pivotal moment came after World War I, when Yvonne Chanrion married Claude Geoffray, heir to Château Thivin. Yvonne brought with her one-third of her family’s prized vineyards and later acquired another third from her sister. While Yvonne and Claude expanded Thivin’s holdings together, they never had children. Upon Yvonne’s passing in 1987, her family’s original vineyard inheritance returned to Paul Jambon of the Jambon-Chanrion family, along with half of the additional lands she and Claude had purchased. Place of Changing Winds Heathcote Syrah 2021The reason the POCW folks went to this vineyard was for the syrah, this being the first of the releases solely from this site, from a singular year.
Very floral in the perfume, violets and lavender, whiffs of eucalyptus and loads of raspberry, cherry and strawberry, in a fog of scent too. Lots of concentration to taste but with a glossy wash of acidity under the tart red cherry, game meat, dried herbs and white pepper characters. The 2021 Riesling Ürziger Würzgarten Kabinett (Golden Capsule) is clear and very delicate on the saline and flinty nose. On the palate, this is a lush and round, almost creamy-textured Kabinett with fine and crystalline acidity and a savory-pure and refreshing grippy finish. It's almost dry in taste due to the low pH of the 2021 vintage and the pure red slate terroir of Molitor's Würzgarten. This is a complex Kabinett with a very long and mouth-watering finish.
