Escarpment Pinot Noir 2021
The 2021 Pinot Noir is svelte and balanced; it's really settled into itself now at two years post-harvest. There's a nice, fleshy green parsley note on the nose. The fruit tastes ripe and fleshy and feels it in the mouth too. Nice mineral acidity shapes the wine and keeps it alive in the mouth. This is super pleasurable drinking here. There are pomegranate pearls and pink peppercorns. There is energy here. 13% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.

Last year’s release was made with MV6 and Abel clone pinot noir, on vines planted in 1998 at Sutherlands Creek in the Moorabool Valley. I assume this release is the same.It presents a bed of fruit-filled flavour, all macerated and strewn with herbs, and while it sings and impresses through the mainstay of the palate, it’s the finish that really moves the bar higher. This wine pushes flavour well beyond the point where it had every reason to stop. The winemaker probably won’t like me saying this, but it’s a Pinot Noir that feels very Australian, in a positive way. It’s varietal, but it feels “very MV6”. Its flavours nestle into the palate, rather than being over-eager to lift off and out. It has that feel of being settled, like a cat after it’s finished kneading your lap. There’s a fruit party going on here with loads of wild strawberries, red cherries and cranberries, spicy, too with snips of fresh basil and menthol plus heady florals mainly roses. I pretty much never drink any samples, because it’s not a good habit to get into, though maybe a few swallows might make a summer while I’m actually tasting, but hey, that’s what I call the FCE (Full Consumer Experience). Anyway, I had a few glasses of this last night while watching the documentary about Ennio Morricone – “Ennio” – which is currently streaming on Stan. Very good too, and this, in a way, while not Italian, seemed a suitable style of wine for that show. I cooked my children some duck breast for tea, with jasmine rice, steamed greens and plum sauce, but I didn’t eat any of that, though this wine would have been most excellent with it. I had a piece of bread with some Laughing Cow cheese on it. Economies must be made.Fine, kind of stony, perfumed, cherry and red fruit, gentle spiced oak, something a little earthy/autumnal too. It’s light to medium-bodied, pleasantly sappy, with a good crunch to acidity, really pleasing pumice stone tannin, and a offers a juicy/savoury finish of excellent length, with a little blood orange bite. Gentle Folk Scary Gully Pinot Noir 2023
Peppery, herbal, lifted and grippy. A good combo of things when it strolls through a sluice of tart cherry juice and cranberry tang. Tightly coiled too, a vigorous and streamlined pinot noir, albeit it has expressive nature, a distinct personality and flair. Refreshing all up too. Detailed in its way, showing fruit, spice, savoury elements harmoniously married, though you could say the snips of whole bunch make a mark. Very good. (95) MIKE BENNIE
The broodier and deeper of the three single-site pinots this release. Scary Gully is the oldest site with the most elevation. The essence of a long ripening season is cast here with black cherry and plum, compact and dense. There's a cosy up-in-a-log cabin appeal to it, all crunchy and wild, confident in its expression, with ample spice and twiggy herbs, thyme and bay. It feels unperturbed and complete. 2020- Slender plum and cherry – pretty and gently perfumed. It has lovely line and length without ever going broad or surrendering its prettiness. Still, it’s no wallflower – there’s drive and persistence of flavour – and even the gentle finish, with a frame of stalky grip, persists and lingers. Deceptively powerful. (96) DECANTER

Anne & Sebastian Bidault Bourgogne Rouge 2022Fruit for this Bourgogne comes from across the communes in which the family operate. Mostly old-vine plantings and more from clay soils than limestone. Spot on aromatics of cherry inlaid with a hint of Asian spice and blue flowers. The palate gives an immediate sweet fruit attack and quickly settles into a medium-bodied frame. Gentle and flowing rather than a wall of flavour and extract, this Bourgogne shows real earthen terroir characters backed by lovely purity of fruit. Mont Redon Gigondas 2019Shimmering ruby-red. Spice-accented raspberry and cherry aromas are complemented by musky garrigue and floral nuances. Sweet and seamless on the palate, offering juicy, well-concentrated red berry, cherry-cola and lavender flavors and suggestions of allspice and licorice. 80 % Grenache, 20 % Syrah and Mourvèdre, from 70+ year-old vines in two lieu-dits in the north of the appellation, in roughly equal proportions. Notre-Dame-des-Pallières is a south facing site at about 200m, whilst Pallière et Pied-Gu is north-facing and at 300m. The fruit from Notre-Dame-des-Pallières is fully de-stemmed, that from Pallière et Pied-Gu fermented as whole bunches and each parcel is on skins for about 25 days. Malo is completed in tank and then 60% of each parcel is transferred to 228L barriques for 16 months, before blending and bottling.
Top notes of garrigue and spice overlay a deliciously voluminous palate of red forest berries. The tannins are deep and rich yet also remarkably fine and silky and the wine finishes long and clean with good acidity.
