Lots of funky reductive stink. Savoury, light cheesiness, aromatic herbs, lemon and lime. Light bodied, intense and slatey with a driving line of acidity and a finish that rushes you, and leaves the gate open. Wonderful. Drink 2027+ GARY WALSH

The 2013 Poison Hill Riesling has an expressive nose of honeyed white peach, lime cordial and pink grapefruit dotted with touches of fennel seed and jasmine. This dry, light-bodied wine is exploding with citrus and stone-fruit freshness and is already very approachable. It finishes satisfyingly long. Drink it now to 2023+. WINE ADVOCATE


White clay soils make for generous flavour concentration, framed in refreshingly low alcohol, layered with kaffir lime, nashi pear and a hint of guava. This is a delightfully textured, finely structured riesling of pronounced, mouth-filling chalk mineral texture, lingering with great persistence and finely integrated acidity. the dark ruby 2021 Pinot Noir Estate is ripe and sunny with aromas of blackberry, scorched earth, and violets. Full-bodied, with a silky texture, a stony mouthfeel, and notes of toasted cedar on the finish, it's supple and attractive now and will drink well over the next 3-5 years. JEB DUNNUCK

The 2021 Pinot Noir, made with about 15% whole clusters, has a medium ruby-purple color and pure scents of cranberries, baked rhubarb and allspice with wafts of forest floor, charcuterie and orange zest. The 2022 Pinot Noir is composed of fruit from all six of Elk Cove's estate vineyards and was matured in 15% new oak. It's bursting with cranberry sauce, blackberry preserves, cinnamon, underbrush and bitters on the nose. The medium-bodied palate is just as generous, offering concentrated layers of spicy fruit. The 2022 vintage was a classic in Oregon, though bookended by some bizarre weather. Elk Cove has estate vineyards in both the Chehalem Mountain and Yamhill-Carlton AVAs. This Pinot Noir is comprised of wines from six different sites. Brilliant red fruit aromatics, with sweet candied raspberries coming to the fore, buoyed by notes of fresh mint. The palate is fleshy and offers plenty of tannin and structure, fresh red and black bramble fruits interplaying with savoury herbal notes, and finishes with a gravelly mineral tone. DECANTER

Sourced from two terraces and predominantly rooting in a rocky subsoil of paragneiss, Hiedler's 2021 Ried Gaisberg 1ÖTW Riesling is dense and spicy on the nose, showing ripe and concentrated bright fruit with subtle earthy notes. Round and elegant on the palate, with juicy richness, well-integrated mineral acidity and persistent ripe fruit flavors on the salty, grippy finish, this is still a young Gaisberg but with promising potential. 13% stated alcohol. Anyone who thinks that dry riesling is always lean and austere should dive into this deep pool of ripe peach and apricot to discover the grape's sensual side. Generous and creamy, but without any sense of weight, this combines ripeness with zesty freshness at the bright finish. Drink or hold. STUART PIGOTT

Gaisberg is often spectral, as if its flavors were placed in your hands by a ghost dressed as a bride. Part of that is present here, but there's also a quantum concentration of mineral, catapulted upward by a slingshot of acidity. The wine is so amazing it borders on the implausible.

The grip and the mere impact on the physical palate are impossible to resist. Yet there a higher octave of flavor that wisps up into the air like the vapors from frozen nitrogen. It's a concatenation of lemons and freesia; it alludes to basmati; it alludes, hauntingly, to white peaches and to blueberries, part of an incipience of sweetness that turns it from prose into music.

It's introverted but passionate, classical but not stodgy, and it is in every way wonderful. It almost isn't "Riesling" any more. It's just Gaisberg; I know it from Gobelsburg and Hirsch, and this site is quite particular, spectral and subtle; it whispers its strange tongue and you feel an opiate tingle - What is this wine doing to me? It smells a little like Champagne, this cool high chiming, this cryptic bliss. It is a very rare wine, that delivers as many poignant questions as this one does. TERRY THEISE

The 2021 Riesling Ried Gaisberg is on gneiss, schist and amphibolite.
Crushed ivy and citrus leaf overlay an almost savory, salty notion of wet earth. The palate is rounded and juicy-almost bouncy with lively energy. Bright, lemon-fringed stone fruit notes skip away in such a joyful fashion that the underlying stony seriousness is almost skipped over. In coming years, the stoniness will gain the upper hand, but, for now, the playfulness of these aromas-leafy top notes and citric charm-quite rightly enjoy the limelight. Delightfully blatantly aromatic - I mean three-feet-from-the-glass aromatic. Did I mention it also smells marvelous?…This wine, while snappy and bracing in the '21 "type," is a rare success in the everyday echelon… The wine leads with verbena, lemon balm and hyssop; it's more herbal than precisely mineral… It shows a sort of macro-terroir of Kamptal - of Austria overall, really - and while the weight and outlines are sleek and cool, the flavors are purely Austrian… It's another wine that held steady over the days…It's also the kind of wine I call "coniferous," (or fir when I'm being literal and Christmas Tree when I'm being colorful…) TERRY THEISE

At once rich and vibrant, this is extremely refreshing. Wonderful white peach, yellow apple and spring blossom aromas. Dangerously energetic on the elegant, medium-bodied palate. So clean and bright in the long, straight finish. Drink or hold. (95) STUART PIGOTT

The 2023 Riesling Brauneberger Juffer Auslese, made with possibly just 5% botrytis, has a subtle scent of gentle lemon. The palate combines exquisite creaminess with candied lemon, smooth and serene, rich yet absolutely chiseled and streamlined, pushing forward with freshness and drive. The Juffer 2023 Riesling Auslese, as it is referred to on the consumer label, displays a quite aromatic and attractive nose of honeyed yellow peach, almond, rose, candied grapefruit, anise, smoke, William pear, a whiff of candy floss, and acacia. The wine combines intensity and a certain lightness and freshness on the palate, as both ripe, yellow fruits (canned yellow peach, quince, and pear) interplay with fresher elements including mint and anise. The finish is pure and aromatic (tangerine, mango), and proves nicely focused, despite the richness at play. This is a superb, playful riper Auslese. (94) mosel fine wines

Beautiful and fruity with ripe strawberries, some dark cherries it's a fantastic pinot with dried strawberries, orange peel, terra-cotta, and dried leaves. It’s full and very layered with creamy and fine tannins that go on for minutes. Plenty of depth and very long with tension and a beautifully creamy, velvety finish. (97) JAMES SUCKLING

The 2022 Home Vineyard Pinot Noir is possessed of a most exciting display of red fruits and ductile tannin in concert. The tannins have a much closer, more densely packed feeling than the unfurling/spooling Olearia. There’s pomegranate, red and black cherry, licorice, star anise and even a hint of cumin seed. It's a wonderful wine that I know from experience benefits from a decant, which allows the fruit to stretch its legs, so to speak. Supple, throaty and full but not big. Intrigue. What a good name for a Pinot Noir. Anyway, Jim Chatto is a very good fellow, and very giving of his outstanding knowledge of wine, and he’d know so much more than me, generally, maybe aside Piedmont.

This has a lot more flavour and pop than the Isle, lots of cherry and almond, and spicy things, and quite some richness of fruit. I like the sooty tannin, and the cherry-almond laced flavour that it offers, there’s cherry pip and some ‘mineral’ acidity to it, blonde tobacco too, and it’s a wine that presents with some lush flavour, with a gentle sappiness to close. Here be flavour and good Pinot things, and I really like this wine. It has some oomph and carriage that the Isle maybe lacks. I like this wine for its juiciness and flavour. Homage faces north-east, is the smallest of the vineyards, was planted from cuttings taken from Main Ridge Estate, and – important on the Peninsula – is the most sheltered of the vineyards.

This release is better than excellent. It’s elegant and fine-boned but it has genuine power, most of the latter formed, assembled and employed through the back half of the palate and out through the finish. It’s a Pinot Noir for lovers of Pinot Noir. It’s modestly sweet-sour but it’s silken and cohesive, its black cherry, meat, toast and floral elements singing as one. This is my favourite of the 2022 Hurley Vineyards pinots; they’re all good, but this for me is the most complete. CAMPBELL MATTINSON, The Wine Front

2022 was a hard act to follow, but this superb wine gives it a shake. Exotic, aromatic and pure with its bouquet of wild strawberries, dark cherries, quince, spices and flowers. Densley packed, this saturates the palate, but, as always, it's light on its feet at the same time. The 2022 Riesling Wehlener Sonnenuhr Alte Reben Grosses Gewächs was made from centenarian vines, in the family since 1911. The nose hints at creaminess but not much more. The palate comes in with a lovely, pithy astringency coating the mouth with citrus intensity. This fills mouth and mind with stony elegance and citrus vividness, finishing on Meyer lemon edged with grapefruit spiciness. Very balanced, harmonious, zesty. Elegant. (Dry) ANNE KREBIEHL MW

 ????This needs a moment’s aeration for the fine stone fruit aromas to emerge. Stunning concentration and succulence, but also impeccable balance this is a great Mosel GG that will give so much pleasure in the years to come. Loosen's 2022 Wehlener Sonnenuhr GG Alte Reben shows a clear, fine-scented and surprisingly cool nose. The palate is juicy, elegant, spicy and, again delicate, but with the concentration and density of the old vines… STEPHAN REINHARDT, Wine Advocate

Lodestone is north-facing and the warmest of the three sites. But it’s planted to the Burgundian clones 114, 115 and 777 (along with some MV6), and the soils the vines are planted in are rockier. (The Hurley Vineyard is currently for sale, if anyone is interested.)

This is an excellent release. Taut, perfumed, meaty in essence but pretty at the same time. Floral. Its tastes of game, black cherries and strawberries-dipped-in-chocolate, the latter of which makes it sound ‘sweet’ but it’s not; there are so many earth/spice/smoke/meat characters here that it largely comes across as savoury. Wonderfully complex and new, there’s no mistaking the layers in the bouquet with aromas of place from minerality to ripe red berry fruits of boysenberry and plum then dark cherry and some raspberry suggestions. The scents of baking spices and smoke from barrel are both sweet and lifted as well as complex. A dry and equally complex wine touches the palate with textures and flavours that reflect the bouquet all at once teasing with polished tannins and medium+ acidity then red fruits and spice. The 2020 Zöbing Ried Heiligenstein 1ÖTW Riesling is clear and crystalline on the nose yet initially rather discreet in its fruit expression. Intense, ripe apricot aromas emerge form the glass after a while. Crystalline, refined and elegant on the palate this, is a powerful, tight and firmly structured Heiligenstein that is still a bit caged and needs aeration or years to open up, refine and shine. The fruit is stewed and the texture accordingly rich and fleshy, whereas the finish remains crystalline, piquant and precise. This should be another gorgeous Heiligenstein in 10 years but in the Hiedler style. STEPHAN RHEINHARDT, vinous.com

This Bourgogne rouge comes from Gevrey Chambertin vineyards and hits above its level
The 2021 Bourgogne Les Pince Vin is lovely. Bright acids give this aromatic, soft Bourgogne terrific energy to complement its soft, open-knit personality. Bright, red-toned fruit, tobacco, cedar and crushed flowers all grace this nuanced, inviting 2021. All the elements are very nicely balanced. ANTONIO GALLONI

A very pretty, and very pinot, nose of mostly red berries and earth gives way to succulent, round and delicious flavors that possess a seductive mid-palate texture while offering good depth and persistence in the context of what is typical for the genre.
