Jinkies! This is a different beast. They have replaced the estate with this, which is essentially a "Village" or maybe a "Premier Cru" from them. All classified sites now. I was really looking forward to sitting down and actually having a good look at this new wine from one of my fave Rizza producers. It did not disappoint. It carries all that rocky, pithy, just underripe stone fruit characters I love from the estate. The core is a little more lively than usual, they are always energetic and usually spine tingling in their attack, this is a bit more approachable and piquant. Long, and as is the case with so many of these 21s, the finish is all mineral and saline, so much so it pushes the fruit to the side. A final lick of not insubstantial extract really kicks the finish in to overdrive. Excellent. ROSCOE

Lemon fills the mouth, serene, yet with an inherent playfulness. All the fruit plays first fiddle for now, but the stone underneath just waits its turn. The 2022 is glorious, balanced and bright. Lalu Langhe Nebbiolo 2021Organic. This vibrant, perfumed Nebbiolo equally blends two sites that were both planted by Lalù. The first site, Roncaglie in La Morra, is a plot of land that Lara Rocchetti and Luisa Sala bought in 2015 and planted in 2017. Looking towards Verduno, this parcel faces east at an altitude of 400 metres. It’s a cool, windy, slow-ripening site. The second source is Bussia Bovi, a sub-Cru within Monforte’s superstar Bussia MGA. Lalù’s parcel is located at 320 metres above sea level, in the south of Bussia, between Bricco San Pietro and the area historically known as Bussia Arnulfo. The soils here are rich in sand, gifting a perfumed wine with supple fruit and great delicacy—the yin to Roncaglie’s yang. The fruit from here fermented as whole bunches and was raised in concrete to retain as much fragrance as possible. Both vineyards could be classified as Barolo (when the vines are of age), which says a great deal about the quality on offer here.
This Langhe Nebbiolo delivers more than most. The 2021 is a juicy, pretty Nebbiolo brimming with vibrant red and dark cherry fruit, anise, florals and some wood spice. In the mouth, the typical austerity of young Langhe is traded for svelte, integrated tannins and supple texture, all supported by mouth-watering energy.

Antarès is the main star of the constellation of Scorpio. One of the basic principles of biodynamics is to work in harmony with cosmic rhythms. Antarès is a selection of vines located on hillsides facing North, at the Western end of the Lirac appellation, at an altitude of 160m. The vines are 50 years old. The harvest is fully de-stemmed. Each variety is vinified separately using natural yeasts. The Grenache is aged in cement vats, the Mourvèdre in old French oak demi-muids for 12 months.

The next day there was a distinct florality and a potent lemon oil note that really got me excited. Also the more textural, phenolic, extract components were a little more positively influential. Massolino Langhe Riesling 2022Screwcap. Massolino planted three clones of Riesling in 2014 in a cool and windswept parcel in Monforte d’Alba. This rocky and limestone-rich plot sits at the hill’s apex at 450-500 metres, just outside the Barolo appellation boundary. After a few years of experimenting with amphora, steel and various types and sizes of oak, the wine today ferments exclusively in a 5,000-litre cement tank, where it rests on lees for nine months.
The use of concrete is hardly commonplace when vinifying Riesling, yet Massolino feels the wine’s brightness and energy merits this approach. It’s hard to disagree, given the coiled energy and purity. It’s a lovely vintage for this wine, with bell-clear apple blossom and white flower flavours allied to the intensity of palate-coating fruitiness and a crunchy lemon and lemongrass close.

Robert Weil Kiedricher Riesling Trocken 2022The 2022 Riesling Kiedricher is from two upper parcels in the of the Wasseros, above the Gräfenberg, which means rivulet, evident in small springs, fed by the forested top of the slope, also on mica schist. This is higher and cooler. One-third is made in wood and two-thirds in stainless steel, from ripe and super-clean fruit. The nose is aromatic, suggesting Reine Claude plum, white peach and green pear skin. Clarity also defines the palate where riper stone fruit shines, framed by grapefruit skin. This has serenity, tautness and substance, despite slenderness. Mouth-watering zestiness appears on the finish. This is a real achievement at an annual volume of more than 100,000 bottles. Dry River Craighall Riesling 2020The 2020 Craighall Vineyard Riesling is so taut and persistent! The wine feels quiet, but then it courses across the palate and soars long through the finish, showing the years of potential unfurling it can do, given the time to do so. There's talc and citrus pith, paraffin and white flowers, pepper and cracked fennel seeds. There is a fresh enoki mushroom and white miso character that feathers the edges of this wine. Dirupi Valtellina Superiore 2019The Dirupi 2019 Valtellina Superiore is generous and balanced, with a 360-degree approach to the palate underlined by dark fruit, plum jam, bluebells and other mountain wildflowers. You smell alpine slopes, cool weather and glacier-like aromas. The palate shows some dried herb and lightly powdery tannins. Fruit comes from a two-hectare site that is divided into nine parcels with mostly sandy soils. Production is 9,915 bottles. MONICA LARNER, The Wine Advocate
The 2019 Valtellina Superiore is super-expressive right out of the gate. Spice, cedar, leather and tobacco meld into a core of bright red Nebbiolo fruit, with dusty tannins that wrap it all together. Cavallotto Langhe Nebbiolo 2021Dark and earthy to open, new leather and walnuts, wafts of bergamot, spice and dried flowers. It’s full-bodied, deep in flavour, red and black fruits, kind of rustic, but in a pleasing way, not least in the tea and grainy tannin grip department. There’s a cinch of orange peel bitterness, with a long grated nutmeg and slightly rusty tannin finish. Really opens up after some air. Such character. A very serious Lange Neb! The word benchmark gets bandied around a lot, but this is a Nebbiolo that justifies that term from an already hyped vintage. This year’s wine is drawn exclusively from declassified, mostly young-vine fruit from the great Castiglione Falletto Cru of Bricco Boschis. Cropped at yields below 40 hl/ha, the grapes are entirely destemmed, and fermentation is spontaneous. Malolactic conversion was in cement tanks during the spring following harvest. Grosset Polish Hill Riesling 2024AVAILABLE SEPTEMBER 1st
Exceptional concentration of fruit flavour here. This is straight and direct but wow it has a charge to it. Lime, chalk, white flower and wet slate flavours storm through the palate in emphatic fashion. There’s an extra note to the finish that I can’t quite place but I’ll call it brine splashed on potpourri splashed on rocks.
