Robert Weil Kiedricher Riesling Trocken 2022The 2022 Riesling Kiedricher is from two upper parcels in the of the Wasseros, above the Gräfenberg, which means rivulet, evident in small springs, fed by the forested top of the slope, also on mica schist. This is higher and cooler. One-third is made in wood and two-thirds in stainless steel, from ripe and super-clean fruit. The nose is aromatic, suggesting Reine Claude plum, white peach and green pear skin. Clarity also defines the palate where riper stone fruit shines, framed by grapefruit skin. This has serenity, tautness and substance, despite slenderness. Mouth-watering zestiness appears on the finish. This is a real achievement at an annual volume of more than 100,000 bottles. Exceptional concentration of fruit flavour here. This is straight and direct but wow it has a charge to it. There’s an extra note to the finish that I can’t quite place but I’ll call it brine splashed on potpourri splashed on rocks. Gaisberg is often spectral, as if its flavors were placed in your hands by a ghost dressed as a bride. Part of that is present here, but there's also a quantum concentration of mineral, catapulted upward by a slingshot of acidity. The wine is so amazing it borders on the implausible.
The grip and the mere impact on the physical palate are impossible to resist. Yet there a higher octave of flavor that wisps up into the air like the vapors from frozen nitrogen. It's a concatenation of lemons and freesia; it alludes to basmati; it alludes, hauntingly, to white peaches and to blueberries, part of an incipience of sweetness that turns it from prose into music.
It's introverted but passionate, classical but not stodgy, and it is in every way wonderful. It almost isn't "Riesling" any more. It's just Gaisberg; I know it from Gobelsburg and Hirsch, and this site is quite particular, spectral and subtle; it whispers its strange tongue and you feel an opiate tingle - What is this wine doing to me? It smells a little like Champagne, this cool high chiming, this cryptic bliss. It is a very rare wine, that delivers as many poignant questions as this one does. Crushed ivy and citrus leaf overlay an almost savory, salty notion of wet earth. The palate is rounded and juicy-almost bouncy with lively energy. Bright, lemon-fringed stone fruit notes skip away in such a joyful fashion that the underlying stony seriousness is almost skipped over. In coming years, the stoniness will gain the upper hand, but, for now, the playfulness of these aromas-leafy top notes and citric charm-quite rightly enjoy the limelight. This is lovely and slender, with a serious, stony, cool core and a beautifully long finish. The lemon-sherbet note here is really beautiful. Prinz Doosberg GG Riesling Trocken 2019From a south facing vineyard site near the Rhine river at 100 to 120 m altitude. The soils are mainly loess and loam with some gravel and a little bit of quarzite in the subsoil.
This is the lowest lying GG, leading with a composed nose of stonefruits spiked with ginger and earthy tones. With a few swirls it ramps up in intensity, vanilla and peach flavours emerge alongside delicate herbal delights. There's a lovely play between exuberance and subtlety, it's a delightful tease.
