From 3.8 ha of 30 to 70+ y.o. vines with a south, south-east exposure. Hand harvest, natural yeast ferment and aged 2/3rd’s in tank and 1/3rd in barrique for 6-8 months. This wine in recent years is showing even greater definition and class. Is it from the organic viticulture, new tanks and equipment giving sharper focus, or now that Fabien has nearly 20 vintages of experience in creating what has become one of the most seamless and perfectly formed 1er cru Chablis’ to come from this appellation. A wine that starts with a whisper and ends in a crescendo. A little flint, lemon oil and spice act as a quiet introduction before the wine expands in your mouth. This is a wine that's all about texture, first enveloping your palate with its silken caress before it's drawn in and funneled to the finish with a lovely chalky embrace. There's a distinctive gin and tonic character, salty pink grapefruit, a little white peach and a subtle herbal seasoning. The oak is there, but not leading the conversation, as little influence as I can remember seeing in this wine. It's still a little embyronic at this early stage of it's life but as is the case with Heytesbury a little time is needed to draw out the full bow. A wine of such class and quiet confidence. This is also aromatically cool and almost as reticent with its airy aromas of white pepper, mineral reduction, essence of pear and a suggestion of wood influence. The gorgeously textured medium weight flavors possess an even more developed sense of refinement while exhibiting fine length on the quinine, stony and bitter lemon zest-suffused finale. This is lovely and a Vaillons of finesse in 2022. BURGHOUND

Once again there is a certain coolness to the otherwise ripe aromas of apple, pear, sea breeze and quinine along with a similar touch of wood influence. The succulent and unusually rich middleweight flavors are also nicely refined while flashing a bead of minerality on the balanced and lilting finale BURGHOUND

WORTH A SPECIAL SEARCH - A similar style to the Vaillons but with extra impact. Ooh - extra volume balanced with some fluidity. Then there's a twist of finishing intensity - you can sense a little oak today - average 5-year-old barrels - a mix of 228s and 350s. Wait 2 years and the oak will be gone - that's a great wine. The 2021 Beaune du Château Blanc 1er Cru has an attractive nose of Golden Delicious and Williams pear aromas, nicely focused though not intense. The palate is well balanced with a taut bead of acidity, quite vibrant and slightly peachy towards the pithy finish. Certainly a step up from the Beaune Blanc this year. NEAL MARTIN, vinous.com

The 2020 Riesling Rüdesheimer Rosengarten Monopol Grosses Gewächs is from two parcels within Rosengarten, the Bienengarten and Kreuzgarten, within the village, flat, close to the river, hence a very warm site, on a sandy, loamy soil. This makes it an outlier among Rüdesheimer Grosse Lagen. The vines are 50 and 20 years old. Just a hint of honey plays on the nose, with a slight note of shriveled, dry fruit that was common in 2020. The palate is rounded and really concentrated, with insistent, bright, dried lemon notes and citrus pith. It is mouth-watering, with real chalkiness of deep soil that begins to take over from the fruit. It's round, rich and with much personality. ANNE KREBIEHL, Vinous.com

The NV Brut Blanc de Blancs Perle Grand Cru is fabulous. A Champagne of uncanny depth and intensity, the Perle is quite structured in this release. White pepper, flowers, crushed rock, mint and lemon peel abound. More than anything else, I am struck by the wines. ANTONIO GALLONI

A lower-pressure cuvée originally inspired by Mumm's erstwhile Crémant de Cramant, it offers up attractive aromas of yellow orchard fruit, sweet citrus, hazelnuts, buttery pastry and flowers, followed by a medium to full-bodied, pillowy and charming palate that's suave and fleshy, concluding with a saline finish. SWEET SPOT, OUTSTANDING - A much less expressive nose, indeed it is all but mute, requires aggressive swirling to eventually coax aromas of white orchard fruit, citrus blossom and seawater. The richer and slightly more powerful flavors also possess a sophisticated mouthfeel along with excellent depth and persistence on the balanced finale where a touch of youthful austerity slowly emerges. In a word, terrific. BURGHOUND

Fèvre has 3.65ha of Vaulorent. Situated on the grand cru hill rather than the Fourchaume slope, the soils here are characterised by lots of Kimmeridgian marl. Tight and tense, lots of energy here, powerful and precise and compensates with concentration and density more akin to Chablis Grand Cru. GIve this five years and it will be stunning. 2022 Chablis 1er Cru Vaulorent, a cuvée where Didier Séguier permits himself the the luxury of using only Fèvre's best old-vine parcels and which is always one of the high points of the range. Wafting from the glass with notes of citrus oil, oyster liquor, white flowers and hazelnuts, it's medium to full-bodied, satiny and pure, with excellent concentration, racy acids and a long, saline finish. The 2022 Chablis Vaulorent 1er Cru has another tightly wound nose like the Montée de Tonnerre, a subtle marine element emerging with time, a touch of wild fennel. The palate has much more body and depth than the aforementioned Premier Cru, with good density, a crisp line of acidity and a welcome touch of spice enhancing the finish. Excellent. NEAL MARTIN

The 2015 Extra-Brut Spécial Club Grand Terroirs de Chardonnay is a dense, powerful Champagne. I would give the 2015 another year or two in bottle, as the 2015 is painfully tight and unyielding. Lemon confit, white flowers, mint, graphite, tangerine oil and chamomile open with time in the glass, but only reluctantly so. The 2015 remains painfully unyielding. Perhaps time will help, but I have my doubts given how expressive the other 2015s are here. The 2015 is a blend of mostly Cramant and Chouilly, both Grand Crus, with some Premier Cru sites as well. A lacy layer of floral honey lies over the very ripe white fruit aromas of this very elegant Auslese. In spite of the impressive concentration and succulence, this riesling Auslese is still really fine, even filigree. What a great vibrancy this also has at the dense finish! Enormous aging potential. The 2021 Kiedrich Turmberg Riesling Auslese is precise, fresh and flinty on the nose yet pretty sweet on the palate. This is an elegant and refined, dense and saline, seriously grippy and stimulating Auslese with enormous aging potential. Very long but very sweet as well. 8.5% stated alcohol plus 110 grams per liter of residual sugar. Natural cork. Tasted in July 2022. STEPHAN REINHARDT, The Wine Advocate

The 2022 Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru Le Clos du Village is ample and fleshy, bursting with aromas of peach, clear honey, buttery pastry and white flowers. Medium to full-bodied, seamless and pure, it's a pretty, charming white. WILLIAM KELLEY

The walls of the Clos make this an early ripener. Vines planted in 1997 but some which are on 161/49 need to be pulled out. Lemon and lime in colour. An attractive fresh nose, with a little bit of lime blossom. The palate has a delicious energy underpinned by the minerality of this site, it is generous but well balanced. Lovely wine. STAFF PICKS 2022 - ROSCOE HALLIGAN-ROSE


What a wine. It was a bit of an all-out brawl this year to see who would take out the big gong. I nabbed a couple of contenders on a recent weekend to examine them properly in the right kind of environment, under a tree in my yard with some mates and some nibbles. At the end There Can Be Only One and that had to be the Freddy Emile 2016. It's like they bottled The Quickening.
The power here is genuinely staggering. It's so compact and tense that it isn't entirely comfortable to taste at this early stage. Even with a few years under the belt it is almost completely primary with little or no indication of age showing amongst that youthfully imploded and inwardly focused fruit. Scintillating stuff. It practically hums with pent up potential. The length is unreal and it stains the palate with wildly mineral fruit. The palate is hugely impactful and it hits like a sock stuffed with pool balls being swung around. It is  a genuine WOW wine but it comes with a caveat, do not drink them too early. There is so much here just waiting to unveil itself. This is probably the best young version of this storied wine I have ever drunk. ROSCOE


Luminous straw-yellow. Complex, mint-accented aromas of nectarine, tangerine and powdered stone, plus a hint of licorice. Then bright, juicy and dense, showing outstanding acid-sugar balance and a penetrating juiciness to the stone fruit and herbal flavors. Finishes multilayered and very long, displaying noteworthy clarity and limy cut on the saline finish. Wine lovers everywhere know just how great Frédéric Emile Rieslings can be, but this looks to be a real knockout in the making; I absolutely love this wine's mineral drive and precision. It pulls off the neat trick of being both very ageworthy and also lovely to drink right now. I was happy to know that my palate was still working after an extremely long day of tasting when I told Pierre that in this vintage of Frédéric Emile I found more of the Geisberg than the Osterberg (in most vintages, the wine is a blend of 60/40 Osterberg-Geisberg, at times even 70/30, but this year it's more like 55/45). The lemon-sherbet note here is really beautiful. Then comes a wealth of herbs, ranging from thyme to parsley, with a touch of sea salt, before turning to more floral nuances, such as cherries and almond blossom. The powerful acidity seems to surround the whole mouth and makes this almost like licking a lemon; the unmistakable dryness is all the more enjoyable because of it. Villages vines bought in the 1990s and replanted in 1998, now over 25 years old (Still young in Burgundian terms)

The 2021 Monthélie Les Duresses Blanc has an attractive, lilting bouquet with shaved almond and chamomile scents. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp acidity, citrus fresh with a dab of ginger on the finish. Don't ignore this little gem. NEAL MARTIN

More direct and narrow - almost vertical - clearly some minerality here. Direct, more chiselled, top texture - juicy - that's a great villages from an unexpected appellation - bravo! BILL NANSON

Exuberantly fresh and bright aromas of green apple, citrus, mineral reduction and a deft application of wood give way to bigger and richer medium weight flavors that exude evident minerality on the impressively persistent, agreeably dry and chiseled finale that displays focused power. Some patience is advised as this is sufficiently tightly wound at present to need it. OUTSTANDING, BURGHOUND

A completely different nose; silkier, almost cushioned, with yellow fruit and flowers. More direct and intense, this a wine with a certain tension before a finishing burst of flavour that brings much interest. BILL NANSON

Light straw colour with a reserved lemon/grapefruit aroma, fresh and penetrating, the palate brisk and bright with vibrant acidity and intense grapefruit/lemon flavours that persist the full length of the very long palate. Superb vitality and balance. It promises to reward cellaring too. Tremendously concentrated and compact, with extreme drive and massive persistence, it positively vibrates with energy. Remarkably complex aromas of dominant stone fruit like nectarine with less of the pear and cut lime character you expect. An intense and powerful wine with a distinctive chalky limestone influence on the palate… Continues the subtle move to Burgundian styles. This is one of the most delicate of Art Series chardies. Elements of the 2017 yet there is more power and intensity within its tight frame. Has slightly more phenolic character. The minerally cracked seashell character is clearly evident here. It is pure with an almost shimmering acidity and precision through to the long finish. One of the more individual of the Leeuwin chardonnays to date. (98) RAY JORDAN, rayjordan.com

The 2021 Art Series Chardonnay leads with a distinctly floral nose: jasmine and white garden rose, wisteria and lemon blossom… On the palate, the wine is powerful and savory-it leans heavily on exotic dry spice and cracked honeycomb, with hints of salted butter on fresh white bread, beeswax and salted pink grapefruit. Stylistically, it is not dissimilar to the 2017; however, the dovetailing of acid and fruit feels seamless and well matched here. The wine is piercing and structural, tightly coiled and almost rigid, in the best of ways. It's an impressive wine, one that, at this stage of its life, is defined by its penetrating acid line. This seems, at least to me, to hark back to what might be called a more 'old school' classic LEAS style. And that will make many people very happy, no doubt.
Pear, grapefruit, Teddy Bear biscuits, cedar, vanilla, clove and ginger oak laying it on pretty thick, though the fruit power is there to take it. It's juicy, honey drizzled pear, citrus, a firm chalk dust grip, with a lively grapefruit cut of acidity, some lime and lime rind richness here too, with a bold and savoury finish of excellent length. It's wine of power and presence, and some warmth, not immediately approachable, but very good. GARY WALSH

A chorus of spiced nectarines, roasted fennel, nutmeg, crushed rocks and baked quinces brings the house down. It's a riot of aromatics, willing you in. On the palate, a surge of flavours gushes; spiced stone fruits, cardamon, and baked apples taper off into a savoury and tangy tail of wet earth and petrichor. A chiselled streak of acidity energises the flavoursome and powerful core. The winemaker work is clever and respectful, fruit is the queen of the show. It's not like the Leeuwin's in the past, some of which were a little too round and voluptuous yet it's not a skeletal racy style either. It's the Goldilocks, just right. This has loads of appeal for top chardonnay and Burgundy lovers. GABRIELLE POY

Concentrated and intense, the nose shows a fruit core of nashi pear, finger limes and Lisbon lemon, with delicate complex layers of nougat, brioche, chamomile, galangal, sesame praline, macadamia and heightened notes of wattle blossom, jasmine and lime flowers. The palate is detailed and ethereal. Pear greets nectarine, white peach and lemon curd. Woven and harmonious, it unfolds to a graphite and mineral thread, with a touch of sherbet, aniseed and cardamom. Gentle textures open through the mid-palate with vibrant natural acidity, amidst a black tea, talc and chalk-like finish featuring characteristic length. LEEUWIN ESTATE

The 2022 Riesling Kiedricher Gräfenberg Grosses Gewächs has a notion of tangerine alongside yellow plum, followed by yellow plum skin and citrus peel. The palate is juicy, almost bouncy, with Reine Claude's vividness, pervaded by zesty, ripe lemon resting on a gentle layer of yeast. It's concentrated, almost allowing glimpses of more distant, tropical fruit, yet all within that frame of citric freshness. It shows tautness, linearity, direction and energy with Weil’s drive, yet it is always cool and dynamic. We only see a fraction of this power at this point, but it is undoubtedly there. Subtle citrus perfume denotes elegance, but the muscular elegance gets you. Wow. It was bottled in early August 2023 for release in September 2024. (Bone-dry) ANNE KREBIEHL MW, Vinous
