Syrahmi Garden of Earthly Delights Chardonnay 2021It walks to the beat of its own drum and it does so successfully. Lemon curd, wheat, honeydew melon and assorted floral notes work in with earth, bran and cedar. If you called it kaleidoscopic you wouldn't be exaggerating. It's not thick with flavour (it's relatively lean), but everything here both spreads and gathers. For a couple of years now we've been hearing from the team at Querciabella about how good the 2021 vintage was. Well the wine finally arrived a bit earlier this year and we are not disappointed. Incredibly fresh and vibrant with classic red cherry and rose petal notes. The fruit is beautifully ripe without being over the top and the wine is simply a joy. The 2021 Chianti Classico is fabulous. Bright and punchy, with terrific resonance, this wine shows just how compelling the vintage is. Readers will find a Chianti Classico of dynamic energy and volume. Dark red cherry, purplish fruit, lavender, rose petal, spice and a gentle kiss of French oak build into the sumptuous, vibrant finish. Superb. The 2021 was aged in 500-liter barrels (5-6% new) for 14 months and is a blend of fruit from Greve, Gaiole and Radda. A saturated purple/magenta hue, the 2021 Chianti Classico is lush and fresh with aromas of black raspberry, black cherry, violet, and fresh leather. Plush and inviting, with bright acidity along the sides of the palate shining through, it offers a velvety texture with a long finish. It’s a tight wine, distinct green olive and lime rind bite, a little sour yoghourt, and quite some acidity here, a powdery chalky texture, with an olive brine savoury finish of zip and good length. The 23 is built on ease of operation. Slightly more forward than the 2022 with a solid push of fruit, plenty of citrus zest, green apple and edging on some more ripe, seemingly juicy characters that expand out nicely. Punchy acidity freshens things up and the all too important salty twang, that we expect from Chantemerle, makes itself known throughout. Like all of Boudin's wines the balance is what will carry it in the cellar, if required, but for me this is right in the zone for more early drinking. Typically excellent. ROSCOE

San Filippo Lo Scorno Rosso di Montalcino 2022Nestled in the rolling hills east of Montalcino, San Filippo is one of the standout estates crafting wines of balance power, elegance, and age-worthiness. Founded in 1972, the estate has gained widespread recognition for its commitment to terroir-driven, expressive Sangiovese. In his time, Owner Roberto Gianelli has done an incredible job transforming his 10+ acre property, no easy feat considering the company he keeps in one of the most sought-after locales on the Montalcino hill.
The Rosso from San Filippo is a fresher, more approachable expression of Sangiovese, offering vibrant red fruit and silky tannins. 100% estate fruit. Includes declassified fruit from the Brunello that doesn't make the cut so pretty flippin good gear going into a wine like this, that's for sure.
Lovely lifted nose with crushed dried flowers, woodsy notes, clove, and burnished spice over kirsch-like fruit and damson plum. The fruit is sumptuous and soft cut with superfine tannins and a lick of fresh leather. A combo of sweet and savoury with warmth and generosity. Olivier Morin Bourgogne Blanc Chitry 'Constance' 2022Olivier Morin took over the family business in 1992, after a first life spent in the music world. The 14ha domaine is currently undergoing organic certification. When he took over, his parents were making just their three appellations: Aligoté, plus Chitryof both colours. The continuity of this approach is reflected in Olivier's 'Constance' cuvées, to which he has added an old-vine Bourgogne Chitry white called Olympe, after the original owner of the vines, and a single vineyard red, Vau de Puits. Fruit off the 35-year-old Robinson vineyard, hand picked and pressed to barrel, 30% new French oak plus a portion to 1000L stainless steel eggs; 50% undergoes mlf. Expect stone fruit and invigorating lemon flavours, lots of blossom and ginger spice, flint, and the funky sulphides entice immensely. The fuller-bodied palate gives way to creamed honey and lemon curd with the oak neatly integrated adding shape and spicy flavours, too. This turns out moreish and savoury. Another glass please. Voyager Estate Chardonnay 2023Tim Shand has made such a profound impact since taking over as winemaker in ‘22 and while it’s early days, gee what’s on offer looks very, very good. Vintage ‘23 is his first complete harvest. Already subtlety is apparent, although plenty of flavour here with stone fruit and citrus, wafts of lemon verbena and celery seed. It’s flinty, spicy and creamy with nutty lees. This is moreish and the savoury edge comes through in tandem with tangy and juicy acidity, and almost a pop of saline tang to finish. Impressive. One of the most common misconceptions in wine is that every wine is as absolutely good as it can be. Most wines, rather, are made to their price point, or to their position in the winery’s range of wines. I’m not sure if it’s relevant to point this out here – it may not be – but I loved it when winemaker Tim Shand said this week that he had re-positioned Voyager Chardonnay to simply be “the best wine that it can be. It’s seventy bucks and it has to be worth that, wringing wet, every day, every time.”This is the best Voyager chardonnay in yonks. It’s all by degrees of course but every degree in wine is hard won. This wine has flavour and texture but it’s the length that gets you going. It shows smoke characters, grilled peach, lemon curd and a jasmine element. There are flint notes here, as a whisper – which is interesting, because Voyager Chardonnay generally doesn’t or hasn’t shown flint characters in the past. It works here. 2023 was Shand’s first full vintage in charge of Voyager’s winemaking and if this wine is an indication, we’re in for a ride. (95) CAMPBELL MATTINSON, The Wine Front

Vasse Felix DHJ1 Single Plot Chardonnay 2023In pure quality terms this is right up there with the Heytesbury release. It is though a cleaner, purer style, its grapefruit and stonefruit characters bell clear, its creamy mouthfeel so perfectly played and placed. I loved the 20222 release of this wine and I love this 2023 as well. It’s a wine of genuine power, noteworthy finesse and outstanding length. It is, essentially, chardonnay in all its glory. Picq Chablis 2022The 2022 Chablis Village was picked at 60hl/ha, triple the amount in the frost-decimated previous year. Originating from the usual parcels and raised entirely in stainless steel, it has a brisk nose with Granny Smiths, lime and wet stone. Classic Chablis. The palate is well-balanced, with a bitter lemon entry lending tension. Taut and linear, it delivers a refreshing, spicy finish that lingers in the mouth. Very fine. This set of wines from Verget in 2023 are such a pure delight and the Pierreclos En Tremblay a special highlight. There's an effortlessness to this wine that makes it so charming and just a pleasure to drink. Nothing is overworked. The fruit sings joyously and there's a lovely savoury, saline seam that plays off the sweeter elements so harmoniously. There's body, texture and weight here but the feeling overall here is one of energy and life! It delivers a blueprint for great, affordable and affable wine in Burgundy that's getting harder to find, which make this wine an even greater treasure.

80 % Grenache, 20 % Syrah and Mourvèdre, from 70+ year-old vines in two lieu-dits in the north of the appellation, in roughly equal proportions. Notre-Dame-des-Pallières is a south facing site at about 200m, whilst Pallière et Pied-Gu is north-facing and at 300m. The fruit from Notre-Dame-des-Pallières is fully de-stemmed, that from Pallière et Pied-Gu fermented as whole bunches and each parcel is on skins for about 25 days. Malo is completed in tank and then 60% of each parcel is transferred to 228L barriques for 16 months, before blending and bottling.
Top notes of garrigue and spice overlay a deliciously voluminous palate of red forest berries. The tannins are deep and rich yet also remarkably fine and silky and the wine finishes long and clean with good acidity. Sourced from two family-owned vineyards, one northeast of Monalcino, producing quite fragrant and silky wines and one in the hotter southwest area near Sant'Angelo (colle) giving power and structure.It's ripe, overflowing with character, a tasty bold number. Blackberry jelly, dark cherry soaked in rum, mint and cocoa/brown spices. Acid lifts and grippy tannins for the finish.
A fuller style Rosso, and I'm all here for it, paired with summer BBQ's and festive late night dinners. NICK

L'Erta di Radda Chianti Classico 2021The 2021 Chianti Classico is a deep, savory wine that is still coming together after its bottling. Crushed flowers, herbs, mint, spice and white pepper lend notable aromatic complexity throughout. I would not plan on opening a bottle for at least another year or two. The 2021 has tons of fruit and overall depth, but the elements have not fully come together. It’s a wine of real character and personality that captures all the pedigree of this great vintage.
