This set of wines from Verget in 2023 are such a pure delight and the Pierreclos En Tremblay a special highlight. There's an effortlessness to this wine that makes it so charming and just a pleasure to drink. Nothing is overworked. The fruit sings joyously and there's a lovely savoury, saline seam that plays off the sweeter elements so harmoniously. There's body, texture and weight here but the feeling overall here is one of energy and life! It delivers a blueprint for great, affordable and affable wine in Burgundy that's getting harder to find, which make this wine an even greater treasure.

80 % Grenache, 20 % Syrah and Mourvèdre, from 70+ year-old vines in two lieu-dits in the north of the appellation, in roughly equal proportions. Notre-Dame-des-Pallières is a south facing site at about 200m, whilst Pallière et Pied-Gu is north-facing and at 300m. The fruit from Notre-Dame-des-Pallières is fully de-stemmed, that from Pallière et Pied-Gu fermented as whole bunches and each parcel is on skins for about 25 days. Malo is completed in tank and then 60% of each parcel is transferred to 228L barriques for 16 months, before blending and bottling.
Top notes of garrigue and spice overlay a deliciously voluminous palate of red forest berries. The tannins are deep and rich yet also remarkably fine and silky and the wine finishes long and clean with good acidity. Petilia 450V Taurasi 2015An enticing nose of prune, walnut, eucalyptus and something like onion seed. Medium-to full-bodied with a layered texture of fruit and mild, spicy flavors that coat the still lightly firm but melting tannins, creating a very long, flavorful finish, where all the elements find common ground. William Fevre Chablis 2022FIVE STARS - To bottle in November. The average age is 40 year old vines, and 10% in wood. Excellent long finish. Sources are Chablis and Chichée for half and the rest in Viviers, 50 year old vines. Well drained steep slope which though south facing is at altitude and stays fresh. A fresh lemon yellow. The nose is a little more subdued than the Petit Chablis but more classical. This too has the attractive saline bitterness of extreme youth, but the fruit builds beautifully on the palate. TOP VALUE - There is slightly better Chablis typicity present on the aromas of mineral reduction, iodine and cool white fleshed fruit. The 2019 vintage was cool in Margaret River, with no shortage of rain. For those producers that handled the vineyards with detail and agile responsiveness, the vintage was a resounding success. The 2019 Calgardup Brook Vineyard Chardonnay is minerally and layered with graphite and flint laced into the aromatics. In the mouth, the wine is taut and spicy, but it has expanse and shape through the mid-palate onward, too. Through the finish, there's a saline/nougat nutty character: almond skin and walnut. Again those beautifully handled lees add something to both the feel of the wine and its aromatic profile. That is one of the hallmarks of these wines and its great to see at this level. Ample roundness and generosity, but there is zip and pep too. Salty minerality here! Very good Bourgogne. Better than its classification.

Alexis de Benoist Macon Villages 2021Golden colour. Deep and honeyed, grilled cashew and white flower aromatic. Fruit spectrum dances around the orchard and something slightly more exotic with a puff of white smoke putting a complexing note into the conversation. The palate follows suits with a lovely attack of sweet citrus and melon fruits spreading across the palate before a blast of limestone-linked austerity and tension pulls everything back into line. Nectarine, cumquat jelly and rosewater, ginger and cinnamon, hazelnut, chamomile and mint, and while I’ve likely written some outlandish stuff here, in essence, it pretty much just smells and tastes like a very good Chardonnay. It has plenty of flavour, though it’s not heavy, hazelnut and salted pistachio, a subtle cultured butter character, a chalky and stony thing to texture, acidity is cool and fine, green mango and ripe lemon closes out a finish of excellent length.
