Massolino Langhe Nebbiolo 2022Screwcap. Three sources here. First, Massolino’s younger vines in Serralunga—in other words, declassified Barolo fruit. Then, Monforte’s Cascina I Maschi (Massolino credits this cool, chalky site with giving the wine lifted perfume and freshness). And finally, a parcel in Alba on lighter, sandy-clay soils, bringing generosity of fruit. The blend is roughly one-third from each of these areas, and there’s little doubt the sum of these parts brings even more finesse and early-drinking appeal to what has always been an outstanding Langhe Nebbiolo.
The 2022 is another gorgeous release from this label. It is a pure-fruited, pretty wine (suggesting strawberry, cherry, violet, anise) with ripe, chalky tannins and a terrific, perfumed finish spiked with graphite-like minerality. Following very gentle extraction, it aged in large Slavonian oak casks for 15 months, as opposed to 24-plus months for the Barolo wine. To call this a bargain is to grossly understate the case!

Dicey Bannockburn Pinot Noir 2021James is the grower, Matt the caretaker and they are the Dicey brothers. They are also neighbours with all the fruit for Dicey is sourced from the family's vineyards in the Bannockburn sub region of Central Otago. All sustainable and all about showing place.
Nice perfumed aromatics with soft violet, ripe dark cherries, anise and dark plum all interspersed with spicy cedar and delicate woodlands notes. That Otago rich dark cherry is on show but this doesn't feel too big or bulky like some others can. A touch of anise, that same dark plum all pile in there giving this plenty of push and depth. Its supple and soft with a lovely flow that carries the palate to a long finish that seems to unfold dark fruits, savoury spice, cedar and foresty notes layer by layer.

The Nebbiolo block is off a new section of vineyard established in 2017, and has been organic from the ground up. Picked in mid-April, it was harvested 7 weeks after the shiraz. Once fermentation was complete, the wines were transferred to older french oak 500L barrels for maturation. The Langhe Nebbiolo is crafted from a selection of 10- to 15-year-old vines in the Neive crus of Balluri, Albesani and Gallina. The wine fermented in stainless steel and then aged in oak botti for 12 months before being bottled unfiltered.
This is just a gorgeous, old-school rendition of Nebbiolo. Pale-coloured, medium-bodied, and loaded with red and blue fruits, hints of rosewater, red meat and leather, as well as plenty of powdery tannins. A Nebbiolo to open when you’re in the mood for a Pinot-weighted wine. Gorgeous.

In 1861, the Jambon-Chanrion family acquired the estate. The pivotal moment came after World War I, when Yvonne Chanrion married Claude Geoffray, heir to Château Thivin. Yvonne brought with her one-third of her family’s prized vineyards and later acquired another third from her sister. While Yvonne and Claude expanded Thivin’s holdings together, they never had children. Upon Yvonne’s passing in 1987, her family’s original vineyard inheritance returned to Paul Jambon of the Jambon-Chanrion family, along with half of the additional lands she and Claude had purchased. Hobo Wine Camp Alexander Valley Cabernet 2021The grapes for this wine come about 82% from our own block in Mitch Patin’s Lloyd Vineyard on West Soda Rock Road planted in 1998 towards the southern end of Alexander Valley on the banks of the Russian River. 11% comes from the Larrick Vineyard that we farm, and the remaining 7% is Malbec from J. Rickard in Cloverdale.
As always, this wine was produced more like a Pinot more than a Cab. Fermented in open-tops with native yeasts, punched down by hand, and racked to barrels before being aged in 2nd fill French oak barrels for 15 months.
