Massolino Langhe Riesling 2022
Screwcap. Massolino planted three clones of Riesling in 2014 in a cool and windswept parcel in Monforte d’Alba. This rocky and limestone-rich plot sits at the hill’s apex at 450-500 metres, just outside the Barolo appellation boundary. After a few years of experimenting with amphora, steel and various types and sizes of oak, the wine today ferments exclusively in a 5,000-litre cement tank, where it rests on lees for nine months.
The use of concrete is hardly commonplace when vinifying Riesling, yet Massolino feels the wine’s brightness and energy merits this approach. It’s hard to disagree, given the coiled energy and purity. It’s a lovely vintage for this wine, with bell-clear apple blossom and white flower flavours allied to the intensity of palate-coating fruitiness and a crunchy lemon and lemongrass close.

Rocher des Violettes Le Grand Clos Sec Montlouis 2021The 2021 Montlouis-sur-Loire Le Grand Clos has generosity and a come-hither side to its personality. However, the natural acidity of this later-ripening, clay-based parcel, 91-year-old vines and the 2021 vintage means that there's a vivid line of acidity that trips through the wine, providing direction and energy. Fully dry, it leaves the drinker with a sense of uprightness. It has some richness from barrel-aging (500-liter barrels, 30% new), which lends a sweet, creamy aspect. Robert Weil Kiedricher Riesling Trocken 2022The 2022 Riesling Kiedricher is from two upper parcels in the of the Wasseros, above the Gräfenberg, which means rivulet, evident in small springs, fed by the forested top of the slope, also on mica schist. This is higher and cooler. One-third is made in wood and two-thirds in stainless steel, from ripe and super-clean fruit. The nose is aromatic, suggesting Reine Claude plum, white peach and green pear skin. Clarity also defines the palate where riper stone fruit shines, framed by grapefruit skin. This has serenity, tautness and substance, despite slenderness. Mouth-watering zestiness appears on the finish. This is a real achievement at an annual volume of more than 100,000 bottles. Huet Vouvray Le Haut-Lieu Sec 2022The 2023 Vouvray Sec Le Haut-Lieu is a pure, refined, seamless style with pear, pineapple and nectarine flavors. It boasts excellent clarity and refinement, with lovely freshness hailing from calibrated acidity that bursts through this blossoming wine. Considering this was only bottled three weeks before tasting, I'm very encouraged by the results. REBECCA GIBB MW, Vinous
This stunning dry Vouvray has such an exciting energy on the simultaneously focused and creamy medium-bodied palate. I love the juicy core, then the way the wet stone character builds to an impressive intensity in the long, precise finish. Still really youthful and with great aging potential.

Dry River Craighall Riesling 2020The 2020 Craighall Vineyard Riesling is so taut and persistent! The wine feels quiet, but then it courses across the palate and soars long through the finish, showing the years of potential unfurling it can do, given the time to do so. There's talc and citrus pith, paraffin and white flowers, pepper and cracked fennel seeds. There is a fresh enoki mushroom and white miso character that feathers the edges of this wine. It's good, complex and built for time. Lovely textural shape, pliable. 11.5% alcohol, sealed under Diam. ERIN LARKIN, The Wine Advocate2020RieslingNew Zealand435$85.00 As low as $76.50

Dirupi Valtellina Superiore 2019The Dirupi 2019 Valtellina Superiore is generous and balanced, with a 360-degree approach to the palate underlined by dark fruit, plum jam, bluebells and other mountain wildflowers. You smell alpine slopes, cool weather and glacier-like aromas. The palate shows some dried herb and lightly powdery tannins. Fruit comes from a two-hectare site that is divided into nine parcels with mostly sandy soils. Production is 9,915 bottles. MONICA LARNER, The Wine Advocate
The 2019 Valtellina Superiore is super-expressive right out of the gate. Spice, cedar, leather and tobacco meld into a core of bright red Nebbiolo fruit, with dusty tannins that wrap it all together. I suppose there could be a bit more finesse here (especially in the tannins) but all things considered, this is nicely done. ANTONIO GALLONI2019NebbioloItaly498$85.00 As low as $76.50 -
Cavallotto Langhe Nebbiolo 2021Dark and earthy to open, new leather and walnuts, wafts of bergamot, spice and dried flowers. It’s full-bodied, deep in flavour, red and black fruits, kind of rustic, but in a pleasing way, not least in the tea and grainy tannin grip department. There’s a cinch of orange peel bitterness, with a long grated nutmeg and slightly rusty tannin finish. Really opens up after some air. Such character. A very serious Lange Neb! GARY WALSH, The Wine Front
The word benchmark gets bandied around a lot, but this is a Nebbiolo that justifies that term from an already hyped vintage. This year’s wine is drawn exclusively from declassified, mostly young-vine fruit from the great Castiglione Falletto Cru of Bricco Boschis. Cropped at yields below 40 hl/ha, the grapes are entirely destemmed, and fermentation is spontaneous. Malolactic conversion was in cement tanks during the spring following harvest. The wine was aged for 18 months in Slavonian oak botti and bottled unfiltered.2021NebbioloItaly457Special Price $85.00 Regular Price $100.00 -

Grosset Polish Hill Riesling 2024AVAILABLE SEPTEMBER 1st
Exceptional concentration of fruit flavour here. This is straight and direct but wow it has a charge to it. Lime, chalk, white flower and wet slate flavours storm through the palate in emphatic fashion. There’s an extra note to the finish that I can’t quite place but I’ll call it brine splashed on potpourri splashed on rocks. Gunderloch Rothenberg Riesling Spatlese 2021The 2021 Rothenberg Riesling Spätlese is clear, precise and fresh on the tropical nose that reveals a stony/flinty spiciness intermingled with fine and candied ripe grapefruit aromas. Lush, refined and savory on the palate, this is a delicate but dense and finely concentrated, stimulatingly crispy Spätlese with a crystalline/saline finish. 7.5% stated alcohol. Screw-cap closure. STEPHAN RHEINHARDT, wineadvocate.com
This category of medium-sweet wines may not be in favor, but that doesn't take anything away from this riesling Spätlese masterpiece that swims against the current with great energy and determination. So much pink grapefruit, rose hip and pomegranate, with wild herbs leaping from the glass. Such brilliance at the very long finish. A minor miracle that the 2021 vintage made possible! Rocher des Violettes Le Grand Poirier Molleaux Montlouis 2020From a 0.8 ha plot ‘Le Grand Poirier’ planted in 1950. This has about 50% botrytis and aged in older barrels. RS 85 g/l
Smells so very strongly of fresh sage and honey and pineapple and medjool dates soaked in warm water. Lovely earthiness. Linden leaf. Saffron. An unusual nuttiness. Pineapple syrup and pressed sage on the palate. The sweetness fills the mouth but this is a wine that needs your silence, your listening, your waiting. If you give it time, sit back, find a nook in the garden or tucked into your old armchair, it's a wine that gives so much more than sweetness. It hands you memories of rain on earth, of bruised clover underneath the ripening grapes, of bees, blue skies, black skies, pink-blazed-morning skies, mist-draped dawns. You can taste yeast, old wood, black coffee, a slowly melting fingertip of dark chocolate on your tongue, ginger-biscuit crumbs. It's something, this wine. TAMLYN CURRIN, Jancis Robinson

Gianfranco Alessandria Barolo DOCG 2020
The 2020 Barolo is a gorgeous, classy wine. Crushed rose petal, red berry fruit, spice, mint and orange peel are all beautifully lifted in this gracious, mid-weight Barolo. Bright Monforte acids lend notable energy and freshness. This elegant, delicate Barolo is superb. The 2020 spent two years in wood, mostly barrique and about 10% in cask. What a joy. Monforte d’Alba. Lustrous ruby. Rich strawberry fruit with a peppery tingle on the nose. Sappy red fruit with plenty of acidity and soft tannins. Very long and sweetly perfumed while the plentiful acidity makes the whole look leaner than it is. WALTER SPELLER, JancisRobinson.com
Rich and warmed aromas of ripe red fruits abundant in spice, featuring a pronounced licorice presence that melds with the warm, inviting notes of oak. Hiedler Gaisberg Riesling 2021
Sourced from two terraces and predominantly rooting in a rocky subsoil of paragneiss, Hiedler's 2021 Ried Gaisberg 1ÖTW Riesling is dense and spicy on the nose, showing ripe and concentrated bright fruit with subtle earthy notes. Round and elegant on the palate, with juicy richness, well-integrated mineral acidity and persistent ripe fruit flavors on the salty, grippy finish, this is still a young Gaisberg but with promising potential. 13% stated alcohol. Natural cork. STEPHAN RHEINHARDT, vinous.com
Anyone who thinks that dry riesling is always lean and austere should dive into this deep pool of ripe peach and apricot to discover the grape's sensual side. Generous and creamy, but without any sense of weight, this combines ripeness with zesty freshness at the bright finish. Drink or hold. STUART PIGOTT
Gaisberg is often spectral, as if its flavors were placed in your hands by a ghost dressed as a bride. Part of that is present here, but there's also a quantum concentration of mineral, catapulted upward by a slingshot of acidity. The wine is so amazing it borders on the implausible.
The grip and the mere impact on the physical palate are impossible to resist. Yet there a higher octave of flavor that wisps up into the air like the vapors from frozen nitrogen. It's a concatenation of lemons and freesia; it alludes to basmati; it alludes, hauntingly, to white peaches and to blueberries, part of an incipience of sweetness that turns it from prose into music.
It's introverted but passionate, classical but not stodgy, and it is in every way wonderful. It almost isn't "Riesling" any more. It's just Gaisberg; I know it from Gobelsburg and Hirsch, and this site is quite particular, spectral and subtle; it whispers its strange tongue and you feel an opiate tingle - What is this wine doing to me? It smells a little like Champagne, this cool high chiming, this cryptic bliss. It is a very rare wine, that delivers as many poignant questions as this one does. Alheit Vineyards Cartology Chenin Blanc 2021
Cartology is a vinous exploration of Cape heritage. It’s intended to be a picture of the Cape seen through the lens of her old vineyards in a given vintage. The cuveé is composed of rare and extraordinary parcels of mature dryland bushvines, of heritage grapes, namely Chenin Blanc and Sémillon. These grapes have been planted in the Cape for centuries. Cartology has become our staple offering. It serves as a poster child for the project, and also seems to have become a flag bearer for Cape heritage wine in general.
The grapes were hand sorted and whole bunch pressed. The juice was very lightly settled (we like very cloudy raw juice) with no additions to the raw juice, wild fermentation took place in cements eggs, clay pots, foudres, and old barrels (various sizes). Fermentation of various parcels lasted anywhere between 3 weeks and 11 months. The wine was kept on lees for around 12 months, then rested in tank on fine lees without fining for a further five months prior to bottling. Very simple, careful winemaking.
The nose shows citrus oil and pear, with some subtle floral/honey tones. The palate is very well proportioned, with firm mid-palate structure, medium rich mouth feel, and long carry. Flavour persists and even intensifies throughout its length. The wine finishes dry and saline, refreshing the palate. This vintage has a sappy, thirst-quenching quality about it.2021Chenin BlancSouth Africa489$93.00 As low as $83.70 -
Schloss Gobelsburg Gaisberg Riesling 2021
The 2021 Riesling Ried Gaisberg is on gneiss, schist and amphibolite.
Crushed ivy and citrus leaf overlay an almost savory, salty notion of wet earth. The palate is rounded and juicy-almost bouncy with lively energy. Bright, lemon-fringed stone fruit notes skip away in such a joyful fashion that the underlying stony seriousness is almost skipped over. In coming years, the stoniness will gain the upper hand, but, for now, the playfulness of these aromas-leafy top notes and citric charm-quite rightly enjoy the limelight. This is lovely and slender, with a serious, stony, cool core and a beautifully long finish. (Bone-dry) ANNE KREBIEHL MW, wineadvocate.comDelightfully blatantly aromatic - I mean three-feet-from-the-glass aromatic. Did I mention it also smells marvelous?…This wine, while snappy and bracing in the '21 "type," is a rare success in the everyday echelon… The wine leads with verbena, lemon balm and hyssop; it's more herbal than precisely mineral… It shows a sort of macro-terroir of Kamptal - of Austria overall, really - and while the weight and outlines are sleek and cool, the flavors are purely Austrian… It's another wine that held steady over the days…It's also the kind of wine I call "coniferous," (or fir when I'm being literal and Christmas Tree when I'm being colorful…) TERRY THEISE
The Riesling terraces are among the oldest vineyards cultivated by Schloss Gobelsburg. Complex aromas of ripe stone fruit and toast. Trimbach Riesling Frederic Emile 2016 375mlLuminous straw-yellow. Complex, mint-accented aromas of nectarine, tangerine and powdered stone, plus a hint of licorice. Then bright, juicy and dense, showing outstanding acid-sugar balance and a penetrating juiciness to the stone fruit and herbal flavors. Finishes multilayered and very long, displaying noteworthy clarity and limy cut on the saline finish. Wine lovers everywhere know just how great Frédéric Emile Rieslings can be, but this looks to be a real knockout in the making; I absolutely love this wine's mineral drive and precision. It pulls off the neat trick of being both very ageworthy and also lovely to drink right now. I was happy to know that my palate was still working after an extremely long day of tasting when I told Pierre that in this vintage of Frédéric Emile I found more of the Geisberg than the Osterberg (in most vintages, the wine is a blend of 60/40 Osterberg-Geisberg, at times even 70/30, but this year it's more like 55/45). Then comes a wealth of herbs, ranging from thyme to parsley, with a touch of sea salt, before turning to more floral nuances, such as cherries and almond blossom. The powerful acidity seems to surround the whole mouth and makes this almost like licking a lemon; the unmistakable dryness is all the more enjoyable because of it. Long and very elegant on the finish. STUART PIGOTT2013RieslingFrance343$98.00 As low as $88.20 -
Crissante Alessandria Barolo DOCG 2019
Lifted, herbal sort of nose. Super-fine tannins – atomically small, very feathery, but very dominant too. Plenty of black fruit that finishes with classic bitterness.

Huet Vouvray Le Mont Sec 2023The 2023 Vouvray Sec Le Mont is precise, upright and flinty. It's less immediately charming than the styles we've seen in recent warmer vintages, but it was only tasted three weeks after bottling - this is one to revisit. There's just the right amount of juicy, peachy flesh within this light-bodied yet concentrated wine. It has the potential to charm but does so without showing off. Flinty and tightly sewn together, it has curves in the right places, but you're just going to have to wait for it to take shape (95) REBECCA GIBB MW, Vinous
One of the great dry white wines of the Loire. This dry chenin blanc is rich and concentrated, but also graceful and delicate. Full-bodied but so elegant and precise, with a wet stone minerality that builds in a spectacular manner in the very long, refined finish. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drink or hold. Dr Loosen Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling GG 2022
The 2022 Riesling Wehlener Sonnenuhr Alte Reben Grosses Gewächs was made from centenarian vines, in the family since 1911. The nose hints at creaminess but not much more. The palate comes in with a lovely, pithy astringency coating the mouth with citrus intensity. This fills mouth and mind with stony elegance and citrus vividness, finishing on Meyer lemon edged with grapefruit spiciness. Very balanced, harmonious, zesty. Elegant. (Dry) ANNE KREBIEHL MW
????This needs a moment’s aeration for the fine stone fruit aromas to emerge. Stunning concentration and succulence, but also impeccable balance this is a great Mosel GG that will give so much pleasure in the years to come. In spite of everything there is a lovely delicacy at the finish. Drinkable from release, but best from 2024. (96) STUART PIGGOT, Jamessuckling.com
Loosen's 2022 Wehlener Sonnenuhr GG Alte Reben shows a clear, fine-scented and surprisingly cool nose. The palate is juicy, elegant, spicy and, again delicate, but with the concentration and density of the old vines… STEPHAN REINHARDT, Wine Advocate

Colombera & Garella Bramaterra 201970% Nebbiolo with 15% Croatina and 15% Vespolina from a two hectare vineyard in Masserano. The soils here are high-acid, reddish-brown porphyritic sand of volcanic origin, which lends a particularly mineral character to the wines. Vespolina and Croatina are co-fermented for 10 days, Nebbiolo for 15+, aged for 24 months in old barriques. Bramaterra is typically more structured and robust with dark berry fruit, spice, iron and meaty notes.
