Chapelle de Blagny Meursault-Blagny 1er Cru Sous le Dos d'Ane 2020This is an exquisite Pinot Noir with a name very few would ever have heard of unless, of course, they put two and two together with the Meursaults, and the like, above. This is, without doubt, the finest Blangy Rouge I have ever tasted. This was blamed on their setting, high on the Côte and yet this should have been a plus and not a minus point for these wines. Maybe they were just left behind in favour of more famous and familiar Volnays and Pommards. Well, this wine alone will set the record straight for this hamlet and for the future. As the world warms up, sites like this will no doubt be highly prized, and in 2020, the vintage played into its hands. This is one of the most expressive and downright delicious wines I have tasted in this entire campaign. It is deeply fruited, not heavy, but intense and completely refreshing and magical on the finish. I have awarded an extra half-point to this wine on this occasion because I want it to sit on a rare list in 2020. There is excellent mid-palate density to the caressing and delicious middleweight flavors that exhibit a subtle bead of minerality that adds a sense of lift to the firm, balanced and youthfully austere finale. Vilmart Coeur de Cuvee 2016The 2016 Brut Coeur de Cuvée is an elegant, sensual Champagne. In other words, classic Vilmart. Crushed flowers, mint, chalk, slate, dried herbs and citrus peel are all beautifully delineated. Brisk acids wrap it all together in style. Introduced in 2015, Busso’s Gallina Viti Vecchie is drawn from a small parcel of 1953 vines planted in the heart of the Gallina cru. The soil in this part of the vineyard is rich in calcareous clay (bluish-grey marl), but there is also some sand. William Fevre Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos 2021DON’T MISS – This too could be from nowhere else other than Chablis with its combination of strong mineral reduction, cool citrus, shellfish and iodine. The dense, opulent and powerful large-bodied flavors brim with dry extract that imparts a sappy texture to the lemony and massively long finish. Not surprisingly for a classic Les Clos, this super effort is very much built-to-age and a wine that I would advise not touching for at least 6 to 8 years first. BURGHOUND
WORTH A SPECIAL SEARCH - 4.10 ha, principally the higher section but some lower towards Grenouilles – mainly planted before 1950 by that father of Willaim Fevre. Always the only wine in this – or pretty much any line-up of great Chablis that makes me think – Chevalier-Montrachet – but this year I see Chablis! Extra breadth to this aroma – almost a hybrid of the previous two wines – but then it changes gear, floral and mega-impressive – wow – I almost don’t need to drink it! Okay, for science ?? : This is not the most forceful or incisive but it has a mouth-filling fluidity that infuses the senses. Ceretto Barbaresco Bernadot 2021Here's the star wine in this flight from Ceretto. The 2021 Barbaresco Bernadot is a beautiful expression with great balance and pretty aromas of bright berry, cherry-cranberry, pressed flower, balsamic aged vinegar, dark fruit and rye biscuit or something with dark grains. Always the only wine in this - or pretty much any line-up of great Chablis that makes me think - Chevalier-Montrachet! A more alive and zesty aromatic from this - almost 2021 in style. Plenty of gas you must wait for it to fade. Here's a wine with (almost!) the density of Preuses but the fluidity of the Bouguerots. A haunting finish that holds impressive intensity. The 2021 Puligny-Montrachet Les Folatières 1er Cru has a classy bouquet, introverted initially then opening with wet limestone, orchard fruit and a touch of lemon verbena.
