A wine that starts with a whisper and ends in a crescendo. A little flint, lemon oil and spice act as a quiet introduction before the wine expands in your mouth. This is a wine that's all about texture, first enveloping your palate with its silken caress before it's drawn in and funneled to the finish with a lovely chalky embrace. There's a distinctive gin and tonic character, salty pink grapefruit, a little white peach and a subtle herbal seasoning. The oak is there, but not leading the conversation, as little influence as I can remember seeing in this wine. It's still a little embyronic at this early stage of it's life but as is the case with Heytesbury a little time is needed to draw out the full bow. A wine of such class and quiet confidence. The 2019 Barolo Castelletto is laced with rose petal, cinnamon, white pepper, mint, cedar and sweet pipe tobacco. Medium in body, with lovely persistence, the 2020 captures all the character of this Monforte site. The aromatics are especially nuanced in 2019. Aromas of red plums and cherries with hints of cocoa, nut shell and dried hibiscus flower. Some citrus peel, too. Medium- to full-bodied, firm and slightly chewy with a subtle red fruit character and hints of dried herbs and walnuts to close. Flavorful. A little austere at the end. Try after 2025. This is also aromatically cool and almost as reticent with its airy aromas of white pepper, mineral reduction, essence of pear and a suggestion of wood influence. The gorgeously textured medium weight flavors possess an even more developed sense of refinement while exhibiting fine length on the quinine, stony and bitter lemon zest-suffused finale. This is lovely and a Vaillons of finesse in 2022. BURGHOUND

Once again there is a certain coolness to the otherwise ripe aromas of apple, pear, sea breeze and quinine along with a similar touch of wood influence. The succulent and unusually rich middleweight flavors are also nicely refined while flashing a bead of minerality on the balanced and lilting finale BURGHOUND

WORTH A SPECIAL SEARCH - A similar style to the Vaillons but with extra impact. Ooh - extra volume balanced with some fluidity. Then there's a twist of finishing intensity - you can sense a little oak today - average 5-year-old barrels - a mix of 228s and 350s. Wait 2 years and the oak will be gone - that's a great wine. The 2021 Beaune du Château Blanc 1er Cru has an attractive nose of Golden Delicious and Williams pear aromas, nicely focused though not intense. The palate is well balanced with a taut bead of acidity, quite vibrant and slightly peachy towards the pithy finish. Certainly a step up from the Beaune Blanc this year. NEAL MARTIN, vinous.com

Slightly more prominent wood sets off slightly riper aromas of white orchard fruit, floral wisps and a similar hint of lemon zest. There is even better volume to the less refined medium weight flavors that also terminate in a clean, dry and youthfully austere finale. Aromas of blue flower, exotic brown spice and cedar lead the nose on the lovely Barolo from Francesco Rinaldi & Figli. Elegant and full-bodied, the savory palate is polished and already almost accessible, featuring juicy Morello cherry, raspberry and licorice framed in fine-grained tannins. The NV Brut Blanc de Blancs Perle Grand Cru is fabulous. A Champagne of uncanny depth and intensity, the Perle is quite structured in this release. White pepper, flowers, crushed rock, mint and lemon peel abound. More than anything else, I am struck by the wines. ANTONIO GALLONI

A lower-pressure cuvée originally inspired by Mumm's erstwhile Crémant de Cramant, it offers up attractive aromas of yellow orchard fruit, sweet citrus, hazelnuts, buttery pastry and flowers, followed by a medium to full-bodied, pillowy and charming palate that's suave and fleshy, concluding with a saline finish. Bertrand Lilbert's wines have long been insider favourites, particularly the intensely characterful, clean-cut and aromatic Cramant Chardonnay, and the Perle - which follows a tradition in the village of reducing the pressure of the mousse by one third to give finer, creamier bubbles. It has classic Nebbiolo aromas of ripe red berry, blue flower, new leather and spice while the utterly delicious, polished palate delivers succulent Morello cherry, baking spice, licorice and tobacco before a minty close. One of Australia’s great cabernets. This from a cooler season highlights and accentuates the typical bright red fruits and blue fruit mix, especially on the nose. It’s aromatic and perfumed with an African violet scent. The palate as always is so exquisitely balanced and refined. Since 1989 the cabernet has been augmented with the floral bright fruit of cabernet franc and the darker robust black fruits of petit verdot. The palate delivers with a gentle restraint yet there is power deep within. The chalky tannins define a long and focussed finish. A deceptive medium bodied wine that will cellar for many years. Aromas of wild berry, rose and baking spice align with a whiff of menthol. Elegantly focused, the vibrant, youthfully austere palate delivers crushed raspberry, Morello cherry and licorice framed in taut, close-grained tannins and fresh acidity before a rather drying, tight finish. Youthful ruby. Concentrated and lifted and with hints of sweet spice on the nose. Lithe, sweet and ripe cherry fruit palate charged with stalky tannins. Great intensity and transparency of fruit. This iconic estate in BOCA has led the resurgence of Alto Piedmont and is rightly considered the premium producer of the region. The unique micro climate, southern exposure & Volcanic soils delivers perfect maturing for Nebbiolo and now amazing Erbaluce.

Le Piane Boca DOC 2017 - The estates iconic BOCA wine that is considered the finest wine of the region. 85% old vine Nebbiolo and 15% Vespolina grown on volcanic soil.  Long fermentation with the skins (30 days) in open steel and wood casks (2000-3000 litres) . Aged 3 to 4 years in large old oak casks, 12 months in bottle before release.

SWEET SPOT, OUTSTANDING - A much less expressive nose, indeed it is all but mute, requires aggressive swirling to eventually coax aromas of white orchard fruit, citrus blossom and seawater. The richer and slightly more powerful flavors also possess a sophisticated mouthfeel along with excellent depth and persistence on the balanced finale where a touch of youthful austerity slowly emerges. In a word, terrific. BURGHOUND

Fèvre has 3.65ha of Vaulorent. Situated on the grand cru hill rather than the Fourchaume slope, the soils here are characterised by lots of Kimmeridgian marl. Tight and tense, lots of energy here, powerful and precise and compensates with concentration and density more akin to Chablis Grand Cru. GIve this five years and it will be stunning. 2022 Chablis 1er Cru Vaulorent, a cuvée where Didier Séguier permits himself the the luxury of using only Fèvre's best old-vine parcels and which is always one of the high points of the range. Wafting from the glass with notes of citrus oil, oyster liquor, white flowers and hazelnuts, it's medium to full-bodied, satiny and pure, with excellent concentration, racy acids and a long, saline finish. The 2022 Chablis Vaulorent 1er Cru has another tightly wound nose like the Montée de Tonnerre, a subtle marine element emerging with time, a touch of wild fennel. The palate has much more body and depth than the aforementioned Premier Cru, with good density, a crisp line of acidity and a welcome touch of spice enhancing the finish. Excellent. NEAL MARTIN

More lime than lemon in colour, the nose is so stylish yet with obvious concentration beneath. I love the texture of this wine, which has taken on a little bit of the cashmere qualities of this sector, while nonetheless retaining its mineral core. Very stylish once again. (95) JASPER MORRIS MW

The 2019 Barolo Capalot offers quite a bit more depth than the straight bottling, Macerated cherry, spice mocha and dried leather are all laced together in this potent, somber La Morra Barolo. Give this a few years to come into its own. ANTONIO GALLONI

WORTH A SPECIAL SEARCH - The classic, almost fizz of golden-yellow citrus - very inviting. Really vibrant in the mouth - such energy. A wine that directs you into its vibrant finish but holds you there with super length. Ultra classy, possibly a great Fourchaume! BILL NANSON

The domaine's 2022 Chablis 1er Cru Fourchaume, a parcel selection in Vaulorent, opens in the glass with notes of sweet citrus fruit, white flowers and oyster shell, followed by a medium to full-bodied, ample and pillowy palate that's cool and fleshy, concluding with a saline finish. The 2015 Extra-Brut Spécial Club Grand Terroirs de Chardonnay is a dense, powerful Champagne. I would give the 2015 another year or two in bottle, as the 2015 is painfully tight and unyielding. Lemon confit, white flowers, mint, graphite, tangerine oil and chamomile open with time in the glass, but only reluctantly so. The 2015 remains painfully unyielding. Perhaps time will help, but I have my doubts given how expressive the other 2015s are here. The 2015 is a blend of mostly Cramant and Chouilly, both Grand Crus, with some Premier Cru sites as well. The 2022 Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru Le Clos du Village is ample and fleshy, bursting with aromas of peach, clear honey, buttery pastry and white flowers. Medium to full-bodied, seamless and pure, it's a pretty, charming white. WILLIAM KELLEY

The walls of the Clos make this an early ripener. Vines planted in 1997 but some which are on 161/49 need to be pulled out. Lemon and lime in colour. An attractive fresh nose, with a little bit of lime blossom. The palate has a delicious energy underpinned by the minerality of this site, it is generous but well balanced. Lovely wine. The 2018 Barolo Paiagallo is delicate, ethereal and beautifully perfumed. Sweet pipe tobacco, orange peel, mint, dried cherry, licorice and incense are all laced together in this very pretty, nuanced Barolo. The Paiagallo is the one Barolo in this range aged in cask. ANTONIO GALLONI

Deep bright purple-red colour leading into a stylish bouquet of sweet mulberry and other berry fruits, violets and cassis, succulent and mouth-filling, with masses of fine emery-like tannins that run the length of the palate adding authority, structure, length and refreshment to the aftertaste. Concentrated, superripe blackberry, cassis and mulberry flavours; oak tucked discreetly into the background. (98) HUON HOOKE, The Real Review

Really delivers as you might expect from this excellent concentrated and powerfully frame vintage in Margaret River. It’s dominant cabernet with smaller portions of merlot, cabernet franc and malbec. Typical of this wine since switching to biodynamics, it is bright and brilliant with a nervy tense energy to drive the palate. The succulent fruit is harness by fine chalky tannins and neatly played oak of which 55% was new. A wine of extraordinary elegance and poise with a few of many decades. (98) RAY JORDAN

Needless to say, Margaret River enjoyed another superb vintage with the 2022 season. Slightly cooler, Cullen report that it was a vintage of “immense perfume and texture”. The wine is a wonderfully vibrant purple in colour. The nose gives up plums, cassis, spices including nutmeg, chocolate, mocha, bay leaves, cigar box notes – think a freshly opened box of Cohiba Siglo VI – and near perfect oak integration. This is finely balanced and exhibiting immense length on a palate that sees the emergence of aniseed, mulberries and coffee beans. An alluringly supple texture with the silkiest of tannins, though plenty of them – there really is some grip here. This will easily sail through fifteen to twenty years in a good cellar. Always the most structured of Brezza's MeGA offerings, the 2020 Sarmassa is a gorgeous wine, starting with its classic varietal aromas of menthol, wild rose, new leather and pressed rose. Firmly structured, the taut, savory palate shows succulent red cherry, pomegranate, licorice and ground clove. Tightly knit tannins and fresh acidity keep it balanced and provide an age-worthy structure. Drink 2029-2038. KERIN O'KEEFE

Tasted from barrel, the 2021 Barbaresco is a very pretty, easygoing wine. Crushed red berry fruit, rose petal, mint, spice and white pepper give the 2021 lovely aromatic lift to match its mid-weight personality. This is shaping up well. ANTONIO GALLONI

Diana Madeline. The name evokes a lot of emotions, for what the woman stood for then and what the wine stands for now. The 2021 vintage equals 50 years of cabernet sauvignon plantings at Cullen. When released in early 2023, it was on what would have been her 100th birthday. It’s a wine that can come from nowhere else, so strong is its sense of place. Expect to swoon over aromas of roses, violets and mulberries doused in baking spices, a ferruginous quality as much as detailed if persuasive tannins. It’s complex, complete and structured. The 2021 Monthélie Les Duresses Blanc has an attractive, lilting bouquet with shaved almond and chamomile scents. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp acidity, citrus fresh with a dab of ginger on the finish. Don't ignore this little gem. NEAL MARTIN

More direct and narrow - almost vertical - clearly some minerality here. Direct, more chiselled, top texture - juicy - that's a great villages from an unexpected appellation - bravo! BILL NANSON

Exuberantly fresh and bright aromas of green apple, citrus, mineral reduction and a deft application of wood give way to bigger and richer medium weight flavors that exude evident minerality on the impressively persistent, agreeably dry and chiseled finale that displays focused power. Some patience is advised as this is sufficiently tightly wound at present to need it. OUTSTANDING, BURGHOUND

A completely different nose; silkier, almost cushioned, with yellow fruit and flowers. More direct and intense, this a wine with a certain tension before a finishing burst of flavour that brings much interest. BILL NANSON

Very deep, dark, impenetrable purple colour; a gorgeous fragrance of spicy superripe berries and a hint of licorice, super concentrated and almost essency. Traces of soy sauce and nori. The wine is highly concentrated on the palate; powerful, profound and rich, with masses of sweetly ripe berry fruit and no sign of herbal varietal touches. A profound and multi-dimensional cabernet that will richly reward long-term cellaring. It drinks superbly already but it would be sacrilege to open it before it's had more time to build the tertiary complexity that we know will come with time. (99) HUON HOOKE, therealreview.com

The 2021 John Riddoch Limited Release Cabernet Sauvignon is a brilliant wine. It is achingly intense yet is defined by its levity, which is not a common attribute in Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine expounds the virtues of the red gravel in which the fruit was grown, via its iodine and crushed shells, cassis and blood, sweet marrow and tobacco. It tastes so clearly of the place, which is a wonderful thing. The back palate swells with flavor, framed by the earth and the attuned oak. This is a tribute to the earth, an ode to it. Plentiful tannins bob along on the current of fruit. This will cellar interminably. It's up there in both quality and feel with the 2010, or so I think. 13.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. One of the best vintages in Coonawarra for many years. Little wonder this release of the John Riddoch is one of the best since the initial release from the 1982 vintage. Aromas of violets and red berry with a slightly cherry glaze character adding further intrigue. The palate is medium weight and refined but with tremendous power and persistence. A combination of hogsheads and barriques has been used to deliver the perfect level of oak. One of the best of these I can recall. (98) RAY JORDAN, rayjordan.com.au

"In one word - 'epic'.  Having just returned from ten days in Bordeaux tasting a vast number of youthful Cabernets, among other styles of wine, if this beauty had been slipped into the mix, it would have lounged somewhere near the top of the pile…John Riddoch is more akin to an elite Saint-Estèphe than a typical New World Cabernet…'21 JR is pure, stunningly plush, deeply fruited but seemingly weightless and incredibly detailed. It is a superb thoroughbred with impeccable balance, and it is as relevant for an old-world geek as it is for a new-world disciple. It is time that Wynns John Riddoch sat alongside the acknowledged world Cabernet greats, and this vintage will undoubtedly help make this dream a reality. (19.5/20) MATTHEW JUKE

Light straw colour with a reserved lemon/grapefruit aroma, fresh and penetrating, the palate brisk and bright with vibrant acidity and intense grapefruit/lemon flavours that persist the full length of the very long palate. Superb vitality and balance. It promises to reward cellaring too. Tremendously concentrated and compact, with extreme drive and massive persistence, it positively vibrates with energy. Remarkably complex aromas of dominant stone fruit like nectarine with less of the pear and cut lime character you expect. An intense and powerful wine with a distinctive chalky limestone influence on the palate… Continues the subtle move to Burgundian styles. This is one of the most delicate of Art Series chardies. Elements of the 2017 yet there is more power and intensity within its tight frame. Has slightly more phenolic character. The minerally cracked seashell character is clearly evident here. It is pure with an almost shimmering acidity and precision through to the long finish. One of the more individual of the Leeuwin chardonnays to date. (98) RAY JORDAN, rayjordan.com

The 2021 Art Series Chardonnay leads with a distinctly floral nose: jasmine and white garden rose, wisteria and lemon blossom… On the palate, the wine is powerful and savory-it leans heavily on exotic dry spice and cracked honeycomb, with hints of salted butter on fresh white bread, beeswax and salted pink grapefruit. Stylistically, it is not dissimilar to the 2017; however, the dovetailing of acid and fruit feels seamless and well matched here. The wine is piercing and structural, tightly coiled and almost rigid, in the best of ways. It's an impressive wine, one that, at this stage of its life, is defined by its penetrating acid line.
