Christmann Aus Den Lagen Riesling GG 2021The 2021 Riesling Aus den Lagen is based on de-classified grand and premier cru barrels of the domaine. Very pure, fresh and stony but, most of all, reductive on the clear and serious nose, this is a medium-bodied, elegant, refined and persistently salty Riesling with a fine phenolic structure and elegant acidity STEPHAN REINHARDT
Jinkies! This is a different beast. They have replaced the estate with this, which is essentially a "Village" or maybe a "Premier Cru" from them. All classified sites now. I was really looking forward to sitting down and actually having a good look at this new wine from one of my fave Rizza producers. It did not disappoint. It carries all that rocky, pithy, just underripe stone fruit characters I love from the estate. The core is a little more lively than usual, they are always energetic and usually spine tingling in their attack, this is a bit more approachable and piquant. Long, and as is the case with so many of these 21s, the finish is all mineral and saline, so much so it pushes the fruit to the side. A final lick of not insubstantial extract really kicks the finish in to overdrive. Excellent. ROSCOE

It was repurchased and is now vinified as a single site. The nose is of serene citrus. The palate is rich like lemon oil, concentrated, flowing and mouth-watering. Lemon fills the mouth, serene, yet with an inherent playfulness. All the fruit plays first fiddle for now, but the stone underneath just waits its turn. The 2022 is glorious, balanced and bright. Marcoux Lirac La Lorentine 2021There was no frost in Lirac, so yields were healthy as well. Antarès is the main star of the constellation of Scorpio. One of the basic principles of biodynamics is to work in harmony with cosmic rhythms. Antarès is a selection of vines located on hillsides facing North, at the Western end of the Lirac appellation, at an altitude of 160m. The vines are 50 years old. The harvest is fully de-stemmed. Each variety is vinified separately using natural yeasts. The Grenache is aged in cement vats, the Mourvèdre in old French oak demi-muids for 12 months.

From the Onkaparinga Hills, a parcel of dry-grown bush vines, fermented as whole clusters and aged in a single, larger-format cask. This parcel was planted in the early 1970s and it has a sappy feel (whole clusters) and bright, very pure raspberries and some leafy elements on offer, as well as blueberries. The palate has quite smooth and ripe tannins, holds a fresh edge (low pH) and delivers a similar combination of red and blue fruits as seen on the nose. A little, chewy stone pop at the finish. Vivacious and uber refreshing, this positively hums with a primal energy and delivers it all with an emphatic snap of rocky mineral tension that clings to the medium bodied, pithy, zesty fruit that struts across your mouth like it has somewhere important to be. I love its vim and vigour, at no point is your palate not fully engaged and enlivened. It carries all this character with seeming ease as it slowly unwinds at the back.
The next day there was a distinct florality and a potent lemon oil note that really got me excited. Also the more textural, phenolic, extract components were a little more positively influential. Artuke Finca de los Locos Rioja 2022One of the most intriguing trends in Rioja today, mirroring developments in other wine regions around the world, is the emergence of primary, reductive wines. A prime illustration of this is the 2022 Finca de los Locos, crafted from a blend of 75% Tempranillo, 20% Graciano and 5% Viura. Sourced from a vineyard planted in 1981 in Baños de Ebro, Rioja Alavesa, it was fermented with native yeast and aged for up to 12 months in large oak foudres. The 2022 displays a deep purple hue and unfolds enticing aromas of blueberry, violets and herbs against a backdrop of oak. Finca de Los Locos is often the chalkiest and most refreshing of Arturo de Miguel's reds and that's certainly the case here. Sourced from a parcel at 560 metres in Baños de Ebro, this is a well-judged cuvée of Tempranillo, 20% Graciano and 5% Viura, showing subtle stony reduction, good focus and depth, violet and mountain herb aromas, redcurrant and wild strawberry fruit and a pithy finish. MMAD Grenache 2022This is ballistically good. I doubt that I’ll taste anything much better from these shores over the next 12 months. The first thing you notice is the plushness, which is always welcome, but it’s the finish that takes things to eleven. Wow, really, this wine has a show-stopping finish on it. It’s blessed with red and blue berry flavours, cedarwood, roasted spice and earth, but itemising the flavours of this wine kind of misses the point. It’s like focussing on the colour of a tidal wave. The complete and utter command of the final flourish of flavour and tannin here feels, as you swallow, like a high water mark. I’m sold, totally sold, on this wine. Pooley Butcher's Hill Riesling 2022Riesling from the Butchers Hill vineyard at Richmond in the Coal River Valley. Whole-bunch pressed and fermented in tank with a further five months on fine lees in old French oak. Pristine fruit and unwavering precision = a beautiful wine. Green apple and lime fruits, wildflowers, crushed stone and grapefruit pith with liminal glimpses of lemon curd. It sports a wicked tubular palate shape of pure citrus fruits and rides on mineral-laden rails of acidity, all focus, velocity and detail. Tremendous length of flavour and sustain here.
