The 2021 La Tendida is the second vintage of this wine from young vines planted between 2006 and 2010 in an area where they are going to keep growing as they transition from the valley to more limestone-rich soils in other parts of the property. It was produced with 75% Monastrell and 25% Garnacha and matured in oak foudre. It has an elegant rusticity compared with Las Gravas or Pie Franco bottlings, with a combination of herbs, flowers, earth and tree bark, with very fine tannins and a chalky finish. It has ripeness, power, elegance and balance. 40,000 bottles were produced. It was bottled in February/March 2023. LUIS GUTIERREZ, The Wine Advocate

    Rimauresq Cru Classe Rose 2023
'Rimauresq is one of a handful of estates in the Côtes de Provence designated Cru Classé (“classified growth”), with more than a century of elite rosé behind it, and after tasting this latest arrival, I’m reminded of how transcendent a proper Provençal rosé can be. There’s a lot going on here.  Put your nose in the glass and the fragrant scrub-brush of Provence sprouts up around you, beckoning you to the azure shores of the Mediterranean. Load up. IAN CAUBLE, Master Sommelier

A blend of Cinsault, Grenache Gris, and Tibouren, the Cru Classé that highlights classic Provence terroir of sandy, gravely soils. A mineral thready that pins down crunchy red fruits, some rose petal lift and wonderful vibrancy without sacrificing lush fruits.

  16. Granite Hills Riesling 2013 Cellar Release
Granite Hills Riesling 2013 Cellar Release

Pale straw-green; the intense, yet tight, bouquet of citrus blossom leads in to a piercing palate with a seamless fusion of lime, apple and slatey acidity. It is the acidity that underwrites a 20-year future for the wine, its statement of the very cool place of its birth plain for all to see. (96) JAMES HALLIDAY

Deepish yellow colour, with lightly-browned toast and honey aromas, a trace of paraffin wax and a hint of beeswax, too. In the mouth, it's generously flavoured, soft and rounded, with some burnt lime and lemon crème brûlée characters. A superb mature example of Australian riesling. (95) HUON HOOKE, tasted 2022

Aged release. A slight green-straw hue and a very good colour for its age. It's showing no signs of slowing down soon, thanks to the acidity across the fine palate. There are still lively lime juice and zest flavours dallying with the tertiary elements - a hint of toastiness and lime marmalade. (95) JANE FAULKNER, tasted 2022

This stunning entry-level wine marries the power we associate with the Wonnegau sub-region of Rheinhessen with a wonderful elegance. Drink or hold. Screw cap. JAMES SUCKLING

The 2023 Estate Riesling trocken opens with a remarkable aromatic yet fine and elegant bouquet with tangerine, chalk and sur lie aromas and a discreet salinity in the background. 18. Frankland Estate Isolation Ridge Riesling 2023
Frankland Estate Isolation Ridge Riesling 2023

One of the very best Isolation Ridge rieslings produced. It’s from an exceptional vintage showing the pristine purity and minerally tension of great rieslings. Comes from a combination of clones planted in 1988. Now this is not your usual riesling. It was left on lees for nine months and about 10% was matured in oak. The result is a wine of tremendous texture, with an intricate weave of fine acid and intensely flavoured fruit. Has a crunchy vibrant minerality on the finish. Exceptional wine. (97) RAY JORDAN, Wine Pilot

Sourced from the original 1988 plantings on ironstone gravels over clay. Some guava and dried mango exoticism, makrut lime leaves and wet stones. It's super precise and poised, a wine of balletic balance with a piercing acid line of jaw dropping intensity and drive. A masterclass in coiled tension, restrained power and the beauty of Frankland River riesling. (97) NICK RYAN, Weekend Australian

One of the great rieslings of Australia. This is textural as much as pure, with lime blossom, ginger flower and a touch of beeswax. Flavours of Bickford's lime cordial, lemon curd, mandarin and zest caress the palate; the talcy-fine acidity is lipsmacking. (96) JANE FAULKNER

Richter Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Kabinett 2021
The 2021 Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Kabinett offers a clear, precise and pure, lovely slate-driven bouquet with citric fruit and some cassis and gooseberry aromas. Crystalline, linear and fresh on the palate, this is an elegant, lush and silky-textured, precise and almost sharp but also round and finely sweet Kabinett from the Himmelreich that shows red and black currant notes on the aftertaste. A gorgeous Kabinett that has to be aged for 10-15 years. Sourced from 80-year-old vines on pure gray slate. Bottled with a spectacular total acidity of 12 grams per liter, but you don't feel the grams of acidity; and believe me, it's serious but balanced by extract and almost 50 grams per liter of residual sugar. 7.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in July 2022. STEPHAN REINHARDT, The Wine

This vineyard site is renowned for charming wines and this has some appley charm in the nose, but there’s also impressive depth and structure behind it. 22. Mount Mary Marli Russell RP2 2021
Mount Mary Marli Russell RP2 2021

Grenache (60%) Shiraz (25%), Mataro (10%) and Cinsault (5%). It’s in keeping with my little Grenache theme this week, except it’s from the Yarra Valley!

It’s complex and a wine of many layers. Raspberry and blackberry, plenty of perfume and spice, hazelnut, something in the way of dried herbs and earth. Medium-bodied, no shortage of red and black fruit, rose oil, but also something a little more meaty and savoury in the mix, with fresh acidity, kind of like pomegranate, fine emery board tannin grip, and a fine ‘minerally’ finish of excellent length. Outstanding in 2021. (95) GARY WALSH, The Wine Front

60/25/10/5% grenache/shiraz/mourvèdre/cinsault. The grenache spends 16 months in 1600L seasoned foudre, the rest matured in barriques (15% new for the shiraz). A wine that shows both the potential of these varieties and this blend at Mount Mary. Perfumed and spicy with red and black fruits and a little Mediterranean garrigue. Brightly fruited and with tannins that are juicy and balanced, this medium-bodied wine is already a treat to drink. PHILIP RICH, Halliday Wine Companion

    Pikes The Merle Riesling 2024

The Merle never fails to sit among the very best releases of Clare Riesling, year after year, no matter what price bracket you quote. For me, this is one of our iconic Rieslings. The colour for this latest release is a near transparent lemon. The wine is elegant and refined, fresh and focused and offers drive, impeccable balance and endless length. A line of sea breeze acidity runs the length, the intensity never drops for a moment, and that freshness is still evident throughout. Fabulous stuff, this latest release is a worthy addition to the lineage. Enjoy over the next twenty years. Drink 2024-2044. (97) KEN GARGET, WinePilot.com

I'd be happy to lie on my back and have someone drip feed this Pikes The Merle Riesling into my mouth for the rest of my days. What an impeccable wine this is. Pure, focused, detailed and delicate all at the same time, class oozes from every pore...(97) QWineReviews.com

Presence on the palate, bordering on weight, with fruit intensity presented as a wide, compelling sheet of flavour. Lime, bath salts and slate, with florals and spices – and citrus rind – for afters. Here we are again on the shore where elegance and power meet. There’s a whisper of reduction in play and an impression that this wine has been made to be cellared. And yet, right now, it’s immensely more-ish. It’s another belter from Pikes. (95) MIKE BENNIE, www.winefront.com

The 2024 The Merle Riesling is powerful and tightly controlled, with a long spool of flavor—lemongrass, white pepper, cheesecloth, bay leaf and scratched lime—that draws out over the finish. I like this wine in its youth, and I like it as an older wine as well. It's very smart and eloquently of place. 11.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. The nose carries a light essence of cooked plum fruit, strawberry jam, pepper, peony. It’s wide, will emerge and evolve well. The palate is close-knit, herbal-peppery, lined with red cherry, brisk fruits, cut in the tannins that still stand a little on the outside. Its frame is a bit skeletal, can amplify. There is rocky powder emphasis on the close, the length good. I like its gradual upping of the tempo, depth. It has interest, hidden corners, is not an open book. “It’s very fresh, always had foundation. 2019 is powerful, but 2020 bears jolis fruits, has true class, an identity,” Laurent Charvin. The 2021 Riesling Ürziger Würzgarten Kabinett (Golden Capsule) is clear and very delicate on the saline and flinty nose. On the palate, this is a lush and round, almost creamy-textured Kabinett with fine and crystalline acidity and a savory-pure and refreshing grippy finish. It's almost dry in taste due to the low pH of the 2021 vintage and the pure red slate terroir of Molitor's Würzgarten. This is a complex Kabinett with a very long and mouth-watering finish. Matured in older foudre. A very bright green gold. A slightly different but superb rendition of Henty Riesling. A penetrating nose with its core of citrus fruits, floral notes and crushed rock. There's a hint of sweetness, but this is essentially a dry wine, with mouth-tingling and invigorating acidity ensuring it's balanced and fresh. I liked this. A lot. Red and blue fruits, violet and lavender lift, some tapenade elements. Beautiful lilting aromatics. The palate is supple, plush and slippery couching raspberry and black cherry alongside some licorice and mineral. Open and charming across the palate but also cinched in by a thread of acidity and balancing quite fine (for the region) tannins. Pure and built for joy. MICHAEL MCNAMARA

A touch of fresh crushed raspberry, some black cherry, and a wild earthen note pocked with meadow herbs. It's all turned up a notch with an extra level of concentration and broad, sweeping fruit and flavour that envelopes the palate then slowly melts away leaving earthy, charred herbs and a little wild note on the close. A bit of rustic charm dare we use the phrase here but in all the right ways and a lovely layering of savoury and sweet throughout. JAMES SUCKLING

  43. Terroir Sense Fronteres Brisat 2022
    Terroir Sense Fronteres Brisat 2022

Brisat is a blend of 75% Garnacha Blanca and 25% Macabeu from 15- to 35-year-old vines around Capçanes, grown at between 300 and 350 metres on sandy clay soils locally known as panal. The fruit is harvested earlier than typical for the area—when flavours are ripe and acidity is still vibrant.

Brisat in Catalan refers to wine fermented on skins. Half the grapes were direct-pressed, and the other half macerated in their juice for five to seven days. If you tasted earlier releases of Brisat, we should note that these days Huber and Peceric are searching for more finesse and expression of place in this wine, and thus have toned back the ‘skinsyness’. The must fermented with indigenous yeasts before the wine rested on lees for six months in tank. It was bottled unfiltered.

  44. Terroir Sense Fronteres Negre 2022
    Terroir Sense Fronteres Negre 2022

Prizing finesse over concentration, Serbian-born vigneron Tatjana Peceric has a beautiful touch with Montsant’s high-grown Garnacha and Cariñena. Except for the skin-contact white Brisat, the wines are fermented as whole bunches in concrete, amphorae and stainless steel (no oak is used), and extraction is as gentle as possible. In the cellar, Peceric works with the infusion model—a buzzy term for sure, yet we should not forget that this kind of no-bells-and-whistles winemaking is scarce in this corner of Europe. In short, the grapes are gently crushed by foot and taken off their skins at between eight and 12 days to continue fermentation. “We don’t need to extract tannin,” says Peceric.

Another key to the style and quality here is that regulations allow for harvesting early for lower alcohol; minimum levels here are 12.5% for reds and 11.5% for whites (compared to 13.5% for reds and 13% for whites in the DOQ Priorat). This year’s Negre is a pure Garnacha, from mature vines sited around Capçanes. The 25-year-old (on average) bush vines sit at 350 metres on the mixed sandy clay soils (known locally as panal) with varied exposures.

Markus Molitor Riesling Alte Reben (White Cap) 2020
The 2020 Riesling Alte Reben Mosel (White Capsule) offers a pure and crystalline slate bouquet with ripe and well-concentrated Riesling fruit. Lush and ripe on the palate, this is a very elegant, fresh and tensioned Riesling with intensely aromatic and sustainable fruit and mineral and tannic grip. A fabulous Riesling again and the best representative of Mosel Riesling you can get at this price. STEPHAN REINHARDT, Wine Advocate

Very attractive nose of white and yellow peach, as well as some blossom. Ripe and well structured, but also clean and bright, without a jot too much weight or volume. This is a very classic dry Mosel. Long, complete finish with serious mineral complexity. STUART PIGOTT, jamessuckling.com

    John Duval Annexus Grenache 2022
From Stonegarden vineyard, planted in 1858. 300 cases made. Raspberry, red cherry, mint nougat, floral too, with something a little more stony in play. It’s medium-bodied, almond and red fruit, fine pumice stone tannin, mint and sage, succulent but controlled, with a slightly warm raspberried finish of excellent length. Very good. MIKE BENNIE
