Occhipinti Siccagno 2022Siccagno is my Nero d'Avola, born from that concentrated grape which is precisely called Siccagna. The Nero that tells so much about Sicily, which is wild, but also fresh and elegant, with a flavor of red fruits. Which has something noble and aristocratic, but also melancholy like a poet or a philosopher. Which is passionate, full of human warmth and contrasts. Classification DOC Sicily; Altitude 280m above sea level; ground is Medium consistency from light sands and sub-Apennine rock of a calcareous nature; agriculture Medium consistency from light sands and sub-Apennine rock of a calcareous nature; training system used is spurred cordon and sapling; average age of the plants is 35 years with plant density of 6000 plants per hectare. Time of harvest first ten days of October. Fermentation In cement tanks with indigenous yeasts, 25 days maceration on the skins; refinement 24 months in 30HL Austrian oak barrels, 2 months in the bottle. The Speri’s presence in this winemaking heartland goes back to 1874, though the original homestead and cellars are even older - 1580. From generation to generation for well over a century, the Speri family have handed down a heritage of pride in their land and passion for its fruits. The family operation now comprises of Carlo (pr/admin), vineyardists Eliseo, Marco and Giampietro, winemakers Paolo and Alberto, marketing manager Giampaolo, and the fifth generation Luca and Chiara Speri.
The family now have 60 hectares of autochtonous vines in the finest Classico districts, divided into three distinct crus; La Roverina, Sant’Urbano and La Roggia. Australian glass artist and printmaker, Brian Hirst creates some of the most visual and tactile wine decanters. Brian's standing in the art world is revered - his pieces are exhibited throughout the world, including galleries in Sydney, New York and Paris - in the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris.
His interest in functional design has led to the creation of charismatic and stunning decanters which we're offering today. These are fluid yet functional designs, beautiful to hold and use.
This bowling ball G+B decanter was a collaboration between friends Giorgio de Maria (leading Italian importer) and artist Brian Hirst (hence the name G+B). A former sommelier, Giorgio helped design a decater that moulds into your hand, making it a pleasure to use.
